RIO RESTAURANTS The following document contains a brief description of Top 35 restaurants in Rio, all of them illustrated with pictures, classified by type of food and with relevant information such as location, capacity and overage price per person.

BRAZILIAN FOOD

Hidden on a winding road high up in Santa Teresa, Aprazível has an amazing location, beautiful views and a lush garden setting. The menu features gourmet Brazilian fare and French cuisine. *The streets in Santa Teresa are very narrow specially that of the restaurant. Access is restricted to vans each carrying 10 PAX

Eleven times awarded in special editions of "Eat & Drink", it is one of the most enjoyable restaurants in Rio, with a bucolic environment and a flavorful menu. The restaurant occupies a beautiful colonial house terraced, from where one can see monkeys jumping in the trees. The stew, made with grouper, lobster, squid, shrimp and coconut milk, is one of the more demanded dishes.

MEAT/RODÍZIO

This well-known churrascaria still draws a mix of politicians, artists and tourists. Dark, mellow woods in the dining room match the tones of the roast meats traveling from table to table. The meat is excellent, especially the picanha, and one should not miss the side dishes, like the unforgettable and typically Brazilian cheese balls. The atmosphere is cheerful and very informal. Also in this complex is the Plataforma Show – the over-the-top touristic Carnaval spectacle.

An ample Gaucho barbecue restaurant serving good beef, pork and poultry. The concept is an all-you-can-eat barbecue being served to your table in skewers with all the beef you want, sliced to perfection by expert waiters. Waiters will stop serving when the table sign is turned to red. *Appropriate for lunch closing a half day tour of the attractions of Barra da Tijuca – Burle Marx Foundation, Casa do Pontal Museum or the protected beaches of Prainha, Pontal and Grumari.

Two Carretão restaurants in town with an identical service. This churrascaria rodízio has a fantastic buffet with hot and cold dishes. There is also a dessert buffet – supplied by what Brazilians like best, sweets and fresh fruits. Service is fast and comfortable. Appropriated when the time is limited.

It’s a very special place, established on one of the most charming Ipanema streets. People gather at this longtime Ipanema favorite for tasty traditional Italian dishes and excellent grilled seafood. There’s also an impressive wine cellar (containing 700 vintages) and a humidor stocked with cigars. Impressive customer-oriented reception.

Elegance is the spice of choice at this handsome Ipanema favorite on posh Aníbal de Mendonça street. Run by hotelier and restaurateur Rogério Fasano, Gero, has some exquisite choices including tuna carpaccio, risotto with Tuscan sausage and the simple but delicious ravioli with tomato, mozzarella and basil.

CONTEMPORARY CUISINE

Delicious dinner and beautiful architecture are the highlights of this restaurant. Brick walls lined with tapestries stretch high to the ceiling in this almost cinematic 1870s mansion. Set on a brick-lined street hidden from the masses and surrounded by 19th and 20th century buildings, Cais do Oriente blends West with East in dishes such as filet steak and sesame tuna. The second floor, an ideal room for live music and an open terrace.

PORTUGUESE FOOD

Serving without a doubt the city’s best Portuguese cuisine, Antiquarius is a rewarding but pricey spot to celebrate old-world cuisine with an antique-filled dining room, top-notch service and lovingly prepared dishes. Some particular recommendations include the leg of lamb, the wild boar in red-wine sauce and the Portuguese favorite bacalhau (cod), elevated here to the sublime.

It's all about seafood at Satyricon: gorgeous grouper, bright-red prawns, sweet rock lobster. Simple Italian-inspired preparations let the fresh fish grab the glory. Octopus salad is a must-order, as are grilled prawns. The risotto is delicious; it's more like butter with a few grains of rice. Complimentary hand-rolled cocoa-dusted truffles make a fabulous finale. The restaurant draws a combo of society swells, celebrities and politicians.

You can also opt for freshly made pastas, risottos and grilled fish or meat dishes, plus a dozen varieties of crepes. There’s live music Friday and Saturday nights.
