Ezagutzaren teoriarako eredua
Guztiok ditugu barruan zer duten berriro ikusi nahi ez dugun kutxak, baina ez gara kutxa horiez libratzeko gai izaten.Edo, gutxienez, berak badu ezaugarri horiexek dituen bat. Itxita dagoela eta ez dela bat ere irisgarria eman dezake, baina noizean behin hor dagoela gogorarazten dio, ezkutatu nahi izan arren ezingo duela hain erraz baztertu.
Kutxaren kontu horrek Julio Cortzarren kontakizunetakoren baten antza du ia-ia. Kutxa hor dago, bere tokian, eta bera bere tokian, bere gauzak egiten. Baina egun batean, bat-batean, konturatu ere egin gabe, kutxa zabalikdago mahaiaren gainean. Horra nola iritsi den galdetzen dio bere buruari, nola ez ote den konturatu. Argi dagobera izan dela mahaira eraman duena eta ireki duena, baina ez daki nola izan den. Berriro gauza bera baina nonzegoen bitartean? Non zegoen bere kontzientzia? Horrelako jazoeraren bat bizitzen duen bakoitzean kutxarenbarruko aldea hazi egiten da, kanpoko tamainak bere horretan jarraitzen badu ere. Gero eta astunagoa da, etabere edukia, aldiz, beti da berbera, baina trinkoagoa. Kutxa zabalik dagoenean berak badaki, oraindik egiaztatuez badu ere. Izan ere, airea zeharo trinkoa bihurtzen da eta ia ezinezkoa izaten da arnasa hartzea.
Kutxa itxia prozesu sinplea da baina gero eta konplexuago ari zaigu egiten, errealitatea beti bera bada ere. Izandaiteke bera ikusteko gai ez izatea.
Beste behin ere, ustez ixtea lortzen du. Kutxa lurrean utzi eta airea hartzen du. Airea arina eta egunerokoada, lasaigarria. Orain kutxa gorde behar du, baina dagoeneko ez dago lehengo tokian. Tarte bat beharko duaurkitzeko, eta bila hasiko ez bada ere, ziur nago (esperientziak hala esaten baitit) lehenago ala beranduagoesku artera etorriko zaiola hala nahi izan gabe.
Prozesu amaiezina bailitzan.
Beti berriro ere agertuko ote den beldur. Hortxe dago, sakon-sakonean, uzkurtuta, ia-ia lotan. Egun batean kutxakesnarazten duen arte: hortxe dago, zabalik, eta bera aurrean, edukiari begira betikoa da, baina areagotuta.
Pentsatzen du bere bizitzak jarduera-eredu jakin bati jarraitzen diola, eta eredu horrek beti eramaten duela puntuhorretara: konturatu gabe kutxa berriro ere zabalik dago bere begien aurrean eta bera, harri eta zur. Orain ustedu zenbait urtetan hainbat kontu (asko, gehiegi, akaso) guztiz itxi gabe daramatzala, arrastaka. Behin eta berriro
itzultzen den bere kutxa hori bezalakoa da, betiko itxi-irekian, baina sekula guztiz zigilatu gabe. Behar bezala ixten ezden zauria bezalaxe. Aspaldi moztutako gorputz-adarra berriro sentitzea bezalaxe. Erdizka utzitako erabaki guztiekmin emango baliote bezalaxe (ezen, izan gaitezen zintzoak: horiexek dira mina ematen dutenak, hartzen ez direnak).
Bere bizitza gero eta arrotzago balu bezalaxe.
Behin betiko unea iristeke dago. Lehenengo aldiz, badaki hura iristean ez dela huts egiteko aukera gehiagoegongo. Ez du erdizka egindako beste saiakerarik ezta aurreraka egindako beste ihesaldirik egiterik izango.Hainbestetan egon da egoera horretan ezen, nola jakin gabe prozesu honetan denak egiten dio ihes, ezinezkoabaitzaio berriz ere hura bizitzea. Agortu egin da. Azkenik bera agortu da.
Bitartean bere gauzetan dihardu. Kutxa hori egon ezean horren biziak izango ez liratekeen gauzetan, kutxabehin betiko ahaztekotan den une honetan horren baliotsuak izango ez liratekeen gauzetan. Kutxa ahaztearekinbatera desagertzekotan ere baden une honetan. Horiek dira bere gauzak, ez kutxa astunaren barruan daudenak.Horrenbeste agertu ondoren, kutxaren edukiak interes guztia galdu du bere begietara. Azkenik ulertu du
interesatzen zaiona kanpoan dagoela: kutxatik kanpo sortutakoa dela interesatzen zaiona.
Argazkietan, adibidez. Duela horrenbeste urte hasi ondoren azkenik borobildu diren eta zentzua hartu dutenhamaika proiektutan
Aspaldi izan zen, beste tokiren batean (bost axola non), kutxa oraindik itxita zegoela. Oraindik irekitzeke zegoenartean, existitzen zenik ere ez zekien. Hotzegi egiten zuen eta isolatuegi zegoen, beraz, denbora nolabaitigarotzea zuen xede bakarra, kutxari arreta gehiegi jarri gabe. Bere buruari arreta gehiegi jarri gabe. Horrelaxehasi zen argazkien kontu hura. Ia-ia joko bat bailitzan, ia gauza guztiak hasten diren bezalaxe.
Ia guztia.
Nola jakin zezakeen berak horren ustekabeko hasiera batetik beragandik horren urrutikoa zen baina era berean

oso-osoan ukitzen zuen zerbait sortuko zenik? Bere gainetik salto egin zuen, aurreratu egin zuen, atzeanutzi eta beste pertsona batzuk harrapatu zituen bere ordez. Orain, hasiera hartatik horrenbeste urte igaroondoren, kutxa zabalik zenbat aldiz aurkitu ote duen galdetzen diot neure buruari. Nork pentsa zezakeen
honen guztiaren ondorioa bere kutxa behin betiko ixtea izango zenik? Baina ez kutxa ixtea soilik, baizik eta harkekarritako guztia, mahai gainean haziz joan eta apurka-apurka lurrean barna zabaldu zen hura, eskaileretakomaila guztiak estali eta orain hainbat hiritako kaleetan zehar ikus daitekeena, bere maletetan ere sartu etabere arropa, liburuak den-dena blaitu zuen hura. Itxiera hark hasiera-hasieratik ekarri zituen balizko hamaikazabalkunde. Hainbeste aukera non ezin jakin guztiak erdiesteko nola zatitu, banatu edo ugaldu. Baina berakbadaki ez direla iristen kutxak hor jarraitzen duelako, beste astindu bat noiz emango zain.
Badaki bere barnetik irteteko, bere baitatik alde egiteko asmoz egiten duela guztia. Argazki bakoitza, ohar bakoitza, hasiera berri bakoitza. Azkenik bere buruarengandik aldentzen lagunduko dion hura aurkitzeko asmoz. Orain badakihorixe dela, hain zuzen, berriro egin behar ez duena. Ez du bere buruarengandik ihes egiten saiatu behar. Ezinezko bideada. Bide hila. Bere burua ezagutzeko adorea izan behar du. Bere erabakiei, horien formei begietara begiratzeko adorea.
Hauxe da nire aurpegia, esan zuen Rhodak, ispiluan, Susanen sorbaldaren atzean dagoena, hauxe da nireaurpegia. Baina Susanen atzean bakartu nintzen, ezkutatzeko, ni ez bainago hemen. Ez daukat aurpegirik.
Gainontzekoek dute aurpegia. Susanek eta Jinnyk badute aurpegia. Hemen daude. Euren mundua benetakoada. Altxatzen dituzten gauzak gauza astunak dira. Bai esaten dute, ez esaten dute. Baina ni gorabeherakaaritzen naiz eta aldatu egiten naiz, eta segundo bat baino gutxiagoan garden bihurtzen naiz.
Berriro ez gardena mota horretan, sekula ez.
Eta hortik datoz argazkiak. Ez hauek soilik, baizik eta argazki guztiak. Libreta guztiak. Ohar guztiak. Baitazenbait gutun ere. Eta inoren mahai gainean zabaltzen diren kutxak ere bai. Besteak eta euren kutxak, bereabezain astunak edo are astunagoak. Eta bera inoren gogoetako hutsuneetan kuxkuxean. Euren pentsamendu-uxuak aurkitu nahian, buru barruan dutena ikusi nahian, ezkutuko kutxetara bultzatu nahian. Eurengandikezkutatzen diren hitzak ikusi nahian, euren buruei ezkutatzen dizkietenak. Bere kutxa propioa azken aldizagertzera behartzen saiatuko balitz bezala. Baina ez da iristen.
Berriro dago bere buruaren zati bat baino ezagutzen ez duen toki horretan. Nahita egin ez arren azkenean beti
hartzen duen bidea gordetzen duen tokian. Orduantxe ezagutzen du, han dagoenean, eta orduantxe hartzen duberetzat. Beretzat hartu zuen, oharkabean, bide horretan barna ibili zen lehen aldian, eta berriro ere bere egindu berriz kurritu duenean. Kutxa etorri ezean, ezin amaitu. Ezingo du amaitu, ezta bide berri bati ekin ere. Etakutxa ez bada berriro bere mahai gainean agertzen? Ezin du inolaz ere baieztatu kutxa behin betiko desagertudenik. Beraz, ezin du kutxatik kanpo geratzen den guztiaren ordena ziurtatu. Beti dago haren edukiaren mende, gordetzen duen hark gainezka egitearen mende, gero eta agerikoagoa den etengabeko ezbaiaren mende. Kutxadesagertu egiten da bat-bateko ahanztura-aldi biren artean, baina berriro agertzen da eta hankaz gora jartzendu falta izan den denbora-tarte horretan lortutako badaezpadako ordena.
Baina urrats bakarra emango banu ia konplituta dauden sentipen hauek pausatuta dauden aulkitik haiek idatzinahi nituzkeen mahairantz, hitzek ihes egingo lukete, dramak hil egingo lirateke, zurrumurru erritmikoa batu zuenlotura hartatik urrutiko nostalgia baino ez litzateke geratuko, urrutiko mendien gaineko eguzki hondarra besterikez, desertuko mugaren atalasean orriak goratuko lituzkeen haizea, inoiz ezagutzera eman gabeko ahaidetasuna,
besteen orgia, gure senaren arabera atzera, gugana, begiratuko lukeen baina existitzen ez den emakumea.
Bata bestearen atzetik idatzi ditudan hitz guztiok irakurri ditu eta ulertu du berriro ere hortxe dagoela hainbeldurgarri zaion une hori, baina oraingoan ere ez dela azken aldia izango. Berriro ere porrot egin du kutxa ixtekosaiakeran, eta bere kabuz itxi da beste behin ere.

Otra vez ms consigue, aparentemente, cerrarla.

No tengo cara. Los dems tienen cara. Susan y Jinnytienen cara. Estn aqu.

Model for a theory of knowledge
We all have boxes containing things we do not want to see again, but which we are unable to throw away. He hasone just like this. It appears to be rmly closed and quite inaccessible, but sometimes it reminds him that it is stillthere, that its not going to be so easy to rid himself of it as much as he would like to hide it.
This business with the box could almost be from a Julio Cortzar short story. The box is sitting there, in its place, while he is busy with his things. Until one day--and it always creeps up on him like this--he discovers to his surprisethe box on his desk and open. He wonders how it got there, how he hadnt noticed it. He must have been the oneto bring it, to place it on his desk and to open it, but he doesnt remember. Once again, it happens, but where washe meanwhile? Where was his consciousness? Each time he lives one of these episodes, the inside of the box growsbigger, but the outside remains the same size. Each time it weighs more, and its contents, always the same, aredenser. When the box is open he knows, even without having had to check, because the air around him becomes socompact that he can barely breathe.
Even merely closing the box becomes an increasingly complicated process, though in reality it is always equallysimple. It must be that he is just not capable of seeing how.
Once again he seems to manage to close it. He leaves it on the oor and takes a gulp of air. Light, normal, everydayair that makes him feel better. But when he goes to put the box away, suddenly he nds that it is not there. It willtake some time to see it again, and though he is certainly not going to look for it I am sure (from experience) that hewill stumble across it sooner or later without wanting to.
As in an unending process of fate.
The dread it will turn up again never leaves him. Its there, behind everything, nestled up, almost asleep. Untilsuddenly one day he wakes up. The box is open again and he is confronting its contents. The same ones, but biggernow. They made him wake up.
He begins to think that his life is following a xed pattern of actions, all leading him to the same point where the boxis open again, before his eyes, and he is once more disoriented. It also now occurs to him that he has been dragging
a lot of (perhaps too much) baggage around for years without ever managing to actually sort it out. Like his box, turning up again and again, ipping open and closed, but never properly locking. Like a wound which only appearsto heal. Like feeling a ghost limb many years after it is amputated. As if all the decisions he left half-made havecome back to mock him (which if we are honest are the ones which really hurt and not the ones we made decisively).
As if his life was less and less his own.
The denitive moment has yet to arrive. For the rst time, he knows that when it comes there will be no more falsestarts. No more half-hearted attempts at escape. He has been in this situation so many times that without knowinghow the whole process is beyond his comprehension it has become impossible for him to live through it again. Ithas come to an end. It has nally worn him out.
Meanwhile he carries on with his things. Things that would not have been so intense without that box, nor so valua-ble now that the box is about to be consigned to oblivion. And from oblivion to nothingness. These are his things, not the stu in the heavy box. From so many appearances, the contents of the box have slowly lost all interest for
him. He has now nally understood that what really matters to him is actually outside the box, everything that hastaken place outside of it.
Like in the photographs. In many projects, started so many years ago, and now, at last are being completed and arediscovering their meaning
It happened years ago, in another place (who cares where), in days when the box was still closed. The box had neverbeen opened; he was even unaware of its very existence. It was freezing cold and he was all alone, so he was onlytrying to pass the time one way or another without paying too much attention. Without paying too much attentionto himself. That is how everything started with the photographs. Almost like a game, like most things begin.
Mostthings.

How could he have known that such a chance beginning, as unintentional as many of his beginnings, could havetriggered something at once so remote from himself, at that place and time, and yet still touching him in so manyplaces? It sprung up on him, jumped over him, and left him trailing behind as other people took his place. Now, so
long after the start of it all, I think back to how often he must have found the box open. How could he have ima-gined that all this would lead to a denitive locking of the box? And not only the imminent closure of his box buteverything which had grown out of it on top of his desk, spreading slowly along the oor, to cover every step on thestairs, seeping along the streets of various cities, even into his suitcases and clothes, his books A closure, whichhad always contained innite openings, since the very beginning. So many options that I wondered how it would beable to split itself up and spread out to span everything. As for him, he knows this moment will never come, sincethe box is there, waiting for him, waiting to be shaken up again.
He knows that he does everything with the aim of getting out of himself, abandoning himself. Each photograph, every line of writing, each new start, as if seeking the means to nally help him get away from himself. He nowrealises that this is exactly what he must never try again. Never try to ee from himself. It is an impossible path, away to nowhere. He must be brave enough to recognise it. To look straight at his own decisions, his own shapes.
That is my face, said Rhoda, in the looking-glass behind Susans shoulder - that is my face. But I will duck
behind her to hide it, for I am not here. I have no face. Other people have faces; Susan and Jinny have faces;they are here. Their world is the real world. The things they lift are heavy. They sey Yes, they say No; whereasI shift and change and am seen through in a second.
It is never more transparent than this.
Moving on to the photographs. Not only these but all the photographs. All the notebooks. All the notes. Someletters too. And the boxes which open on top of other peoples desks. Other people and their boxes, just as heavy orheavier than his own. And he, poking through the empty spaces of other peoples thoughts. Hoping to nd strandsof thought, to see into their heads, and push them towards their own hidden boxes. To see the words hidden fromthemselves, about themselves. Trying indirectly to squeeze out the last from his own box. But it does not come.
Another time he is somewhere he only vaguely recognises. A path leading somewhere he does not choose to takebut where he always ends up. Once there, he strides around and recognises it as his own. He made it his own unk-
nowingly the very rst day he walked it, and makes it his own once again on re-taking the way. If the box does notshow up he will not be able to nish. He will neither be able to nish nor start on a dierent path. And what if the boxdoes not re-appear on his desk? He cannot be sure of its denitive disappearance. Therefore he cannot be sure ofthe order of everything around it. He is always exposed to the contents, to the overow of what is inside, to the fearof the constant uncertainty which increasingly assails him. The box disappears between two periods of momentaryoblivion and re-appears to upset the precarious order, which had been set up in its absence.
But if I were to walk a step from the chair where these almost fullled feelings lie towards the desk where Iwish to write them down, the words will ee away, the dramas will die, nothing will remain of the vital nexuslinking the rhythmic murmur but a distant nostalgia, the dying sun on mountains far away, a wind lifting theleaves at the edge of a deserted frontier, a kinship never to be revealed, the orgy of others, the woman whomwe intuitively urge to look back towards us but who never actually existed.
He reads the pile of words I have been writing one after another and understands that the dreaded moment hasnally arrived, and that this time is the last. Another failed attempt to close the box, which once more springs shutby itself.
He comforts himself by thinking:
Maybe it had to be like this.
