WelcomeWe are the largest most diverse arts festival in East Lothian. Now in our sixth year, the 3 Harbours Arts Festival has over 100 venues, over 100 artists and over 50 events.

Visual art, music, workshops, tours, trails, literature, film, photography and drama abound in Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton during the festival week.

Art in unusual places - sculpture in the harbour, photographs on harbour railings, an origami installation in a scrapyard and much more. See the highlights page for a taste of the festival.

The festival supports and encourages positive community activity in Prestonpans, Cockenzie and Port Seton. This is partly attained through a week-long festival of art which creates a fantastic festival atmosphere from harbour to harbour. We put on a show, we hope the sun shines and we guarantee a wealth of creative activity which visitors can enjoy at a relaxed and welcoming pace.

Communities within the 3 Harbours area are noted for their passionate community spirit, they volunteer throughout the year and are committed to this part of the coast they live at. Schools, community centres, libraries, community groups, art clubs and individuals all take an active part in the festival. Cuthill Park in Prestonpans is a beautiful tranquil space, close to the Firth of Forth and the John Muir Way. It lay neglected for many years, but now The Friends of Cuthill Park care for the site, and several events throughout the year such as the Big Lunch, Mural Fest and the Coastal Food Fair are held there.

Further along the coast to the east in Cockenzie, is Cockenzie House. The beautiful house and gardens have a long and intriguing history and the Cockenzie House Heritage Group are working hard to secure its future within the community for

generations to come. A visitor to Port Seton Harbour would likely see rowers setting off in their skiff in sun, rain or snow. The Boatie Blest Community Rowing Club based at the harbour is an enthusiastic group which built two St Ayles skiffs in 2010 as part of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association project. It has an ever increasing number of rowers and just as active a social side.

This is only a taste of the activities in the area. There are many more and we would encourage you to take the time to visit the events listed in this brochure.

This is the fifth year of the Mural Fest. Six selected muralists will be drawing and painting throughout the weekend inspired by the poem ‘Scary Haven’ written by Prestoungrange Poet Laure-ate, John Lindsay.

The Big Lunch inspired an estimated one million people to have lunch with their neighbours across the UK last year and this year it coincides with the 3 Harbours Arts Festival. An outdoor picnic, everyone welcome.

Coastal Food Fair. Come along and enjoy some of the best food on of-fer from Edinburgh and East Lothian. Including seafood, international food stalls and speciality foods. Arts and crafts, a car bootie and activities for the kids ensure a great family day out.

The Open Houses Trail where you can view the artwork and meet the artists in the comfort of a home in Cockenzie and Port Seton. The core team of The Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry, the ‘panel beaters’, will welcome you in to the home of fellow ‘panel beater’, Kate Edmunds. Kate, Dorie Wilkie, Mary Richardson, Shona McManus, Sarah McCabe, Meg Porteous and Catriona Wilkie will be displaying their own unique pieces during the festival and you can see them working on an embroidery of Cockenzie House, from an illustration by Gareth Jones. This talented group have embroidered words and pictures for the introduc-tion pages in this festival brochure. Marietta Di Ciacca, another ’panel beater’, embroidered the 3 Harbours Arts Festival logo. Many thanks for the beautiful work done on such a tight deadline.

The Seashore Gallery situated near the ancient Boat Shore in Cockenzie and the Harbour Gallery facing the picturesque working harbour in Port Seton, are well worth a visit. The owner artists, Fiona Crombie and Alistair Hamilton have a varied selection of artwork in the galleries.

The annual Boatie Blest Exhibition of hand-crafted model boats includes two models built this year, a model of ‘Boatie Rows’ by Stuart Mack and a model of ‘Boatie Blest’ by Bob McNeil. Each is a replica of the life-sized skiffs built and rowed at Port Seton this year.

Cockenzie Power Station has the largest annual mixed media exhibition of over 150 artworks in East Lothian.Regular festival supporters, Hadding-ton Art Group, Richard DeMarco, Sandy Moffat and others are included in this display of some of Scotland’s finest artists.

Damian Callan returns with a drawing created specifically for the festival. Over 7 feet by 7 feet this extra large charcoal piece features some famil-iar motifs from other works – children, boats, a harbour and lighthouse, and ships at sea.

Jenny Pope is an artist based at the Edinburgh Ceramic Studio at Coburg House in Leith. She is an avid beach-comber and some work reflects ideas around walking and collecting man-made objects and also bones. Explor-ing the vulnerabilities of our bodies and the change processes related to illness/wellness, focussing on control of our ‘breathing’. Her current work com-bines the structure of bones and rock formations with eroded surfaces.

Mark I’Anson (artwork on the front cover of this brochure) best describes his work himself “At the time of my first fishing related exhibition, Drifter (2006), I wrote, optimistically, that it was ‘part of an ongoing project’ while in real-ity having no idea what might come next. It turned out to be a book of his-

torical photos entitled ‘Scotland’s East Coast Fishing Industry’ (2009). Next a vague notion that I’d like to draw the complete boat as opposed to what could be seen above the waterline led to an ongoing series (of which these 3 Harbour paintings are perhaps the last) ‘Like Fish out of Water’” These featured in a 2010 exhibition (Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh) and book, ‘Al-ways Boats and Men’ in collaboration with poet Angus Martin. Now I find myself once again nervously saying “This is part of an ongoing project!’ The preview show will be held on Friday 27 May from 17.30 to 19.00. Meet the artists and take this early opportunity to acquire an original work of art.

The Rosses and the Castaways will provide the entertainment with songs and music of the sea.

Photospace. Jon Eland returns with his portraits and the project resulting from the photowalk last year. Together with this display will be an exhibition of the work of a number of photog-raphers new to the festival. The 3 Har-bours Photowalk, for experienced and beginner photographers, will again capture the mixture of the colour of the festivals and the everyday life of the local area. As a special extra this photowalk will coincide with another running at the Saltaire Arts Trail in West Yorkshire. www. flickr.com/sicliff Expanding on the photowalk – roving reporters will capture the flavour of the festival. Walks, talks and workshops will be held and guests will be invited to blog with us on the 3 Harbours site. The latest information on the Phot-ospace and Blogworkshop will be there too! Cuthill Park will be a hive of activity with the Mural Fest, The Big Lunch and The Coastal Food Fair.

WHAT’S ON Exhibition Landscapes Merging by Glen Craig Scottish Watercolour Artist explores the landscape of East Lothian in a bright and energetic display of original art. Gordon Stewart Scottish China Painting Society Ceramic plates + preserve pots

Exhibition Prestongrange Visitor Centre tells the stories of the various industries which were once present around the Prestongrange area. Glassmaking, mining, brickmaking, salt and potteries are all included. A short film provides an introduction to the history of Prestongrange. WHAT’S ON Exhibition Gone To Pot: The story of East Lothian’s potteries. The exhibition traces the history of potteries around the Prestonpans area including Belfields, Gordons and Hillcoat Potteries. With illustrations by local artist, Michelle McCluskey, the exhibition also includes industrial pieces made at Prestongrange. One highlight of the exhibition includes

Mak’Merry Pottery and the story of Catherine Blair, a Suffragist, founder of the Scottish WRI and creator of Mak’Merry Pottery. Exhibition The Last Miner’s House: A 1960s Livingroom Prestongrange Colliery closed in 1962, ending a way of life for local miners. Here, a livingroom from the time of the closure is re-created, highlighting the new designs and technologies of the 1960s, alongside the more traditional aspects of miners’ housing.DATES + TIMES Saturday 28 May – Sunday 5 June 11.30 - 16.00 Free of charge

WHAT’S ON Exhibition The largest annual mixed media exhibition of artwork in East Lothian. Over 150 artworks will be on display by some of Scotland’s finest artists. A wonderful array of painting, sculpture, glass, furniture and ceramics.

The preview show will be held on Friday 27 May from 17.30 to 19.00. ‘The Rosses’ and the ‘Castaways’ will provide the entertainment with songs and music of the sea.

They helped co-ordinate various sub-sets of stitchers, offered stitching guidance, sewed on the backing to the panels ready for exhibition and to date undertake any repair work and upkeep necessary. The talented group will be displaying their own unique pieces during the festival and you can see them working on an embroidery of Cockenzie House, from an illustration by Gareth Jones.

WHAT’S ON Exhibition ‘Shore Gulls’ Adele Robertson Pencil

“I did these drawings of the fishermen from the cover of a small booklet of old photos of Coldingham and St Abbs. I have always been interested in old photos and postcards of people and places around Scotland. I was really taken by the three characters just working away on the creels and lines, an everyday scene at the shed, their faces tell a hundred stories and to think this is just a moment in time for these hardy men who spent their lives trying to earn a living from the cruel and relentless seas that they obeyed. Trying to imagine a day in the life of these men I wanted to capture their characters in the lines on their faces. They were known as the `Shore Gulls’ as they were always there where you’d expect to find them just like the seagulls.”

Notes. “The Haven” was a place that caught the imagination of local bairns. Topaz was the last sailboat of any size to use Morison’s Haven - it never escaped the silted-up harbour and was buried when the Haven was infilled in the 1950’s. In its prime the Haven was often used by Scandinavian and other Baltic traders and sailors on alcohol would no doubt produce strange foreign noises from these boats of a night!

This is the fifth year of the Mural Fest. Six selected muralists will be drawing and painting throughout the weekend. Entries are now welcome for Prestonpans 2011 Mural Fest. If you wish to enter the competition please provide a sketch for a mural based on a poem about the old port of Morison’s Haven in Prestonpans, ‘Scary Haven’, by Prestongrange Poet Laureate, John Lindsay.

Boatie Blest is a community group which takes part in coastal rowing for fun, for healthy exercise and to race against other clubs throughout Scotland.

Come along to the harbour and see the Boatie Blest skiffs ‘Boatie Rows’ and ‘Boatie Blest’ on Saturday evening. There will be an open session when you can have a go at rowing a boat with an experienced crew.

Keen photographers have the opportunity to be taken out to experience the area from the sea and take some unique photographs. Then stay for the fun races and cheer on the teams as they race each other. A beach barbeque and ‘The Castaways’ singing songs of the sea will be the perfect end to the day.

Exhibition Model boats of Cockenzie and Port Seton

This annual exhibition showcases the craftsmanship of local modelboat builders. The model boat window trail is an extension of this exhibition.

Other items of interest relating to the fishing heritage of Cockenzie and Port Seton are also displayed.

This year we feature two new models built only this year, a model of ‘Boatie Rows’ by Stuart Mack and a model of ‘Boatie Blest’ by Bob McNeil. Both models are built to scale from kits supplied by Jordan Boats. WHAT’S ON Cockenzie House Heritage Group Open Day

Cockenzie House was built in the late 1600s for George Seton, 5th Earl of Winton, Salt Master and Baillie of Tranent. It passed into the hands of the York Building Company in 1729, was purchased by John Cadell in 1777 and remained in the Cadell family for 200 years. Since then it has had many owners. The current owner opened the house as a Nursing Home until 2008.

Community Projects

Sheila Ritchie has undertaken most of the research in to the history of the house and visited Cockenzie House with children from Cockenzie Primary School. The children have created their own interpretation of the house history and this is on display in the venue.

Thomas Cadell VC brought a marble Nandi bull from India and had it situated in the shell grotto in the gardens. The whereabouts of the bull which left Cockenzie House in the early 1900s has not been discovered. So, CHHG, Cockenzie Primary School and 3 Harbours Arts Festival have worked together to bring a bull back to Cockenzie House. Decorated by pupils at the school, a fantastic life-sized bull is back in the gardens.
