This month St. Matthew
Parish will support
mothers and babies
through the Baby
Bottles for Life
Fundraiser for the
Legacy of Life
Foundation. On the weekend of October 15/16, every
parishioner will have the opportunity to help fill a bottle
with cash, checks, and spare change and help change a
life! Volunteers will distribute bottles at the end of all
masses, please take one home, fill it with coins, cash, or
checks, and return it to church when you come to mass
next week.
Legacy of Life
Foundation
funds two crisis
pregnancy
centers in Bucks
County and
Philadelphia that
serve over 500
families who
cannot provide
for simple baby
supplies. Many
of the women who come through our doors
believe they have no choice but abortion. They
may feel scared, alone, and totally
overwhelmed, not sure what to do, and may
have no one to talk to. The centers provide free
services such as pregnancy testing, counseling,
ultrasounds, and advocacy, as well as material and
financial support for women so that they are able
to receive the truth about their choice and be freed
from fear. Our support does not stop there! We
provide support and advocacy for women for
the 9 months of pregnancy, and for at least
three years after their babies are born!
In 2015 alone, with God’s grace, 386 women were
saved from abortion at our centers, and over 334,
and counting, have chosen life this year!
We are asking that you help us fill the bottles
with checks, coins or bills. Volunteers will be
available to collect your gifts. Any checks
should be made payable to Legacy of Life
Foundation with a memo “SMatthew Bottles”.
Thank you for your support!

One of the most crucial virtues is steadfastness. I recall with fondness my grandfather telling me in his thick Irish brogue, “Tommy boy, be steadfast, be stouthearted.” Steadfastness is constancy, resoluteness, and the willingness to remain faithful to one’s beliefs and goals. The novelist Jane Austen holds that steadfastness is central for developing all other virtues. For without steadfastness there is no willingness to make the necessary sacrifices and adjustments for acquiring the other virtues. Steadfastness is the virtue which empowers us to keep our commitments. Without steadfastness there is little hope that we would have the necessary strength of character to deal with the disappointments, frustrations, limitations, and betrayals that are a part of our lives. Simply put: without steadfastness all the other virtues lose their power. Why? Because virtue is not a part-time activity, but a consistent way of acting in our everyday lives. The first reading from Exodus recounts the story of the war between Israel and Amalek (a nomadic tribe). Moses must hold the “staff of God” in his hand so that the Israelites will win the battle. However, Moses grows tired and needs the help of Aaron and Hur. In the end, Joshua defeats Amalek. God practices steadfastness in His Covenant relationship with Israel. The leaders of Israel are called to do the same. Steadfastness is one of the key virtues for leaders. They must remain faithful and constant in the face of trials and difficulties, drawing their strength from Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Again, steadfastness is not something we develop on our own. We need a community which encourages and fosters this virtue. Besides leaders, the entire community of faith needs to grow in steadfastness. The Second letter of St. Paul to Timothy encourages both the leader and the community to remain faithful to the Gospel and the teachings of the Apostles. For this, it is essential to know and put into practice the correct teaching concerning Jesus. The temptation is great to abandon
the tradition for something novel and more to our personal taste. St. Paul powerfully captures the need for constancy and steadfastness. “I charge you to preach the Word, to stay with this task whether convenient or inconvenient—correcting, reproving, appealing—constantly teaching and never losing patience.” We need to practice steadfastness in our prayer life. We need to carry on a life-long dialogue with the Blessed Trinity. Prayer is more than the reading of a shopping list or a wish list. Prayer is a steadfast openness to God’s Word for our daily lives, and it is the courage to put that Word into practice. We are to be like the widow in our Gospel reading who will not stop until she is granted her request. She is persistent and determined. These are the qualities we need to develop in our prayer life. God always hears and responds to our prayers, although His response is not always what we expect. We need to develop a discerning spirit and constancy of heart so as to remain faithful to our baptismal identity. Constancy does not sulk, pout or give in to self-pity. Steadfastness is a fidelity to God’s will and a trust in His ways of love. Let us have steadfastness of spirit in our dealings with the Blessed Trinity and one another. Jesus wants to know if He will find any faith when He returns. Will He? Will He find steadfastness in our hearts and in this parish community? Let us pray that He will find both.
