Onward! Christian Soldiers!

We commemorate Veterans Day each year on November 11; a day set aside to publicly acknowledge the men and women of the United

States Armed Forces and their family members. Additionally on this Veterans Day, we observe the 103rd anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which marked the offi cial end of the First World War. As Americans, we are obliged to pray as “one Nation under God” for our service men and women and call to mind the sacrifi ces they render, so that the peoples of the globe, you, and I may know life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let us not fall short in our duty to pray for our Veterans, both living and deceased, and beg Our Blessed Lord, the Prince of Peace, to bestow His peace on their souls, in our homes, on America and her allies, and on the world.

“The Third Person of the Holy Trinity. ... He it is who transforms men’s souls into temples, souls won by the

redemption of Christ, adopted children of God; He makes

us heirs of the heavenly Kingdom, as St. Paul says:

“You are washed and justified in the name of our Lord Jesus

Christ and in the Spirit of our God.” It pertains to the Holy Spirit until the end of the world to form the new

members of the Mystical Body of Christ’s predestined.”

P R A Y E RLet us pray that we constantly keep our eyes fi xed on heaven, our ultimate calling, so that all we say and do may be for the

glory of God.

Fr. Benedict M. La Volpe, OFM CONV.Guardian & Rector of Marytown

from the pen of

Dear Pilgrims to the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe at Marytown,

In today’s Gospel from St. Mark, Our Loving Savior Jesus points out the charity of the widow, and it almost sounds like a parable. In his 2018 Angelus address for this Sunday’s Gospel, Pope Francis teaches us:

The scribe represents important, wealthy, infl uential people; the other person—the widow—represents the least, the poor, the weak…

[Jesus] denounces the oppression of the weak carried out misleadingly on the basis of religious motivations, declaring clearly that God is on the side of the least. And to really impress this lesson on the minds of the disciples he offers them a living example: a poor widow, whose social position was irrelevant because she had no husband who could defend her rights, and therefore she became easy prey to unscrupulous creditors, because these creditors hounded the weak so they would pay them. This woman, who goes to the temple treasury to put in just two coins—all that she had left—and makes her offering by seeking to pass by unobserved, almost as if ashamed. But, in this very humility, she performs an act laden with great religious and spiritual signifi cance. That gesture full of sacrifi ce does not escape the gaze of Jesus, who instead sees shining in it the total self-giving to which he wishes to educate his disciples. [11Nov 2018]

What is our true understanding of sacrifi ce? Do we look at the examples in our own lives of sacrifi ce, for example our parents and grandparents? Or do we relish in our comfort at the cost of their sacrifi ce as the Scribes did in the time of Our Lord Jesus?

Yours in the United Hearts of Jesus and Mary!

One Body

Believers who respond to God's word and become members of Christ's Body, become intimately united with him: “In that body the life of Christ is communicated to those who

believe, and who, through the sacraments, are united in a hidden and real way to Christ in his Passion and glorification” This is especially true of Baptism, which unites us to Christ’s death and Resurrection, and the Eucharist, by which “really sharing in the body of the Lord, . . . we are taken up into communion with him and with one another.”

The body’s unity does not do away with the diversity of its members: “In the building up of Christ’s Body there is engaged a diversity of members and functions. There is only one

Spirit who, according to his own richness and the needs of the ministries, gives his different gifts for the welfare of the Church.” The unity of the Mystical Body produces and stimulates charity among the

faithful: “From this it follows that if one member suffers anything, all the members suffer with him, and if one member is honored, all the members together rejoice.” Finally, the unity of the Mystical Body triumphs over all human divisions: “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (CCC 790-791)
