The Knysna Film festival is a “MUST” on your bucket list. It is an event that will enhance your
experience in the Garden Route, and will add tremendous value to the worthwhile “things to do”
in this amazingly beautiful region.
It supports the efforts of GRDM and local municipalities to develop the film industry in our region,
especially opportunities for youth, providing practical exposure needed for trained youth in this
industry. Our hope is that this festival will grow to become a Garden Route festival and one of the
major attraction events within our region.
I wish the festival director the best with all the arrangements and hope that this event will give
visitors a glimpse of the diversity and uniqueness our region has to offer.
We realised the Garden Route and Klein Karoo’s potential to tap into the film industry years ago
and have been working with other municipalities and relevant agencies towards this goal. The
most obvious reason for our area’s potential as a preferred filming destination is the diversity and
natural beauty of our landscapes.
The imminent growth of especially the local film industry presents a multitude of benefits to
our area. Associated impact on tourism; skills development; job creation; and a need for services
ranging from catering to transporting equipment are sure to make welcome contributions to our
communities and economy.
It will allow existing businesses to grow, while new initiatives may be developed in anticipation of
the industry’s many specialised needs. The Knysna Film Festival is one step towards realising all
our celluloid dreams. Thank you to the organisers, sponsors and partners for creating this
platform for entertainment and growth.

FESTIVAL INTRODUCTION
Festival Director
PATRICK WALTON
“Experience is everything” This has been the mantra of the festival organizers from the
beginning. The inaugural Knysna Film Festival is shaping up to become a major event in years to
come. Starting small we have had tremendous support from our partners wthout whom this fes-
tival would not have been possible. The festival aims to introduce new talents and give exposure
to the Garden Route as a preferred film destination. The programming has been a challenge as
we have to start the festival in order to find our niche in the festival spheres. The genres are
broad so that we can expose you the patrons to a diverse cross section of films and filmmakers.
The precincts give us great opportunity to showcase Knysna and the Garden Route, its people
and its culture. I wish you an unforgettable experience.

the Garden Route.

you visit Knysna, you will never leave it
entirely behind.
10 IKASI MEDIA AND THE FESTIVAL LEARNERS
IKASI MEDIA and the Festival LearnersIkasi Media is a specialized training provider in the Garden
Route delivering short training programmes to rural youth, that
will inspire and equip them, to design a future for themselves in
the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The programmes are well matched to the mandate of the Garden
Route District Municipality to develop local youth for the growing
film, TV and online industry. The Knysna Film Festival is another
initiative to activate the film industry in the Garden Route. iKasi
Media will be partnering with the festival, to train unemployed
youth in the surrounding Knysna communities and to engage
them in the festival workshops, discussions and screenings.
The purpose of the training is to encourage, support and
motivate rural youth (NEETS) to find employment or become
entrepreneurs in content development, and begin small businesses
for their communities in the digital media space
There are also opportunities for semi-skilled crew members on
local and international productions coming to film in the Garden
Route. iKasi Media will place job-ready youth into the Festival and
create exciting content around the activities under mentorship
of facilitators.
The training programme which will take place in September
2019 will be delivered by iKasi Media and the Youth Development
Agency, it will include modules – Film Appreciation; MOJO (Mobile
Journalism); Concept to Screen Process; Casting; Health and
Safety and Set-Etiquette.
Recruits for the programme are between the ages of 18 and 35
with a matric certificate. We are looking specifically at previously
disadvantaged youth and aim to have 75% black beneficiaries.
All the recruits will have an opportunity to apply for a 3 month
accredited programme – Introduction to Film and TV where,
under an over-arching umbrella of empowering entrepreneurial
thinking, they will cover theoretical and practical components in
respect of occupational skills, as well as basic, generic life skills.

Learners from across the district were in attendance as well
representatives from the Garden Route Municipality. Nambitia
Kasi-Ndzuzo from the MICT SETA and Carlyn Sassman, from
The National Youth Development Agency, joined the ceremony to
hand out certificates. Chairman of the Garden Route Film Office,
Phillip de Vries supported as well as the families of the learners.
The response from the audience for the 4 short films
made by the learners was amazing! Have a look at
the iKasi Media Facebook page!
All these graduates will form part of the
group to benefit from the activities at the
Knysna Film Festival.
ln essence, they are a “new b r e e d ”
of filmmaker; a highly motivated individual who
realizes that the key to unlocking business is to provide stories
that audiences want to consume as well as providing world class
services in an increasingly competitive global market.
The first IKasi Media graduation ceremony in June 2019, was a
great success with 22 learners receiving their certificates for the
3 month program.
• Learners from this program will also have access to components
of the industry program at the festival giving them insights into
employment and career opportunities.
• Keep an eye out for our learners who will
be working around the festival in various
key positions.
• Some of the learners will also be
using the festival to film a short film
much in the style of the 48hr project
live in front of the general public
under the guidance of mentors and
industry professionals.
• Pezula Resort Hotel and Spa has
contributed towards the learners preparations
for this event and has already engaged with a small
team who are shooting short videos for the
social media marketing as part of their
CSI initiatives.

What is the Outreach Program about?
KNYSNA FILM FESTIVAL’s Outreach
Program is aiming to create awareness,
engage and empower local learners
through the medium of film and film
related activities.
The Festival is the ideal playground for
our learners to get involved through a
practical, hands on application. The
learners will be creating a short film on
location in the two festival precincts,
the Knysna Waterfront and the Thesen
Harbour Town in the direct eye of the
public.
They will gain exposure, and experience
with other producers and film makers
who will mentor them through
the process.
In the spirit of the 48hr film project the
learners will tackle this project with the
assistance of the Knysna LED supported

Orientation workshop which will be
done has been done with the learners by
Ikasi Media. To bring this dream to life,
we have teamed up with Ikasi Media,
who run different programs in the
Film Industry space for disadvantaged
individuals. They will be supporting the
learners as they prepare for their festival
roles.
The program of activities falls into four
main strands:
Screenings & Events – our learners
will be the hosts meeting and
greeting festival goers.
Audio Visual – our learners will
be running the cinemas you as
audiences will attend.
Short Film Project - During the
festival, watch out for our Learner
Film Crews out and about in the
different precincts, filming a short film
of their creation, to later be shown at the
Community Cinema to which access is
free.
Workshops – Learners will have
an opportunity to go to festival
workshops that are being offered by
mentors and industry professionals.
The Short Film Project
From pitch to script. From filming
to screen. The learners you will see
around the festival have created a script
under the direction of mentors. They
were given the task with only some
parameters to work from.
The film must not be longer than
5 minutes.
They need to take into account that there
will be people in the background of shots
in some instances.
Background noise must be considered
when scripting the dialogue.
Equipment needs to be kept to a
minimum to allow them to be mobile
and save time in setting up the shots.
They must assign film crew roles and
execute their script over 3 days.
The final script needs to be edited on
the fourth day to be screened at the
Awards Gala.
The festival is dedicated to be inclusive
and create access and participation
opportunities for learners to work with
the festival with the aim of generating
interest in the sector, potential
employment, education on segments of
the industry and development of skills.
