Real Estate

The Garden Route experienced quite a property ‘bubble’ between 2003 and 2006. How did the subsequent financial crisis and economic contraction affect real estate values in the region? The effects of the financial crisis in 2008 were less drastic than expected in the Garden Route, even though many properties are holiday homes, always a luxury. There were fewer bank repossessions than expected. House prices leveled out as owners came to realise the boom years were over and that they had to price their properties more realistically.

It seems to be a buyer’s market at the moment. Any advice for prospective investors? As always when purchasing a property, it’s important to do your homework. And remember, location really is important. Buyers today are much better informed and less reliant on agents to advise them.

Has residential property values risen in the past six months compared to the same period last year? Residential properties have maintained their values;

in some areas prices on more desirable properties have risen slightly, but there is still a surplus of properties for sale and buyers have options available. How buoyant is the market for holiday home rentals? The rental market for holiday homes is very buoyant; this is a prime holiday destination for both local and overseas visitors.

Some Joburg residents who intend to relocate to the Garden Route seem to be interested in small holdings and properties with agricultural zoning. How buoyant is this market segment? There is some interest in small holdings and farms, but demand is not high in this segment of the market.

There used to be a time when foreigners, especially from Germany, purchased a lot of land and residential property in the Garden Route. Is this still a trend? There is still interest from overseas buyers, but less than there was before the financial crisis in 2008. The crash, particularly in Spain and in Greece,

has made many desirable properties in prime holiday locations in those countries available at affordable prices. The resale prospects are good and there is the added benefit of proximity. South Africa is a long flight from Europe.

What are the key features that attract property owners to the Garden Route? The relaxed lifestyle and wonderful climate (on average 320 sunny days a year) and leisure activities to suit all types, from retirees to families with young children. Many families choose to live in this area as they feel it is a more secure environment than Gauteng, and there are good schools in the area, so Mom and the kids tend to live here and Dad commutes to Gauteng for the working week.

If you were from Gauteng and wanted to retire in the Garden Route, what would be your favorite area to buy property, and why? As a retiree my first choice would be Knysna because of the availability of amenities such as shops, hospitals and golf courses.

1. Temperate climateWhatever the season, the Garden Route is a playground of verdant valleys, evergreen forests, sunny beaches and warm Indian Ocean currents. Its temperate climate invites you to break your city constraints and get thoroughly laid-back, coastal style! The mild winters on the Garden Route, from May to August, are filled with sunny and wind-still days – a period often referred to as the ‘secret season’. The indigenous forest does not lose its leaves, you don’t have to hide indoors and children can roam free. And the summers, pleasantly sub-tropical, are distinguished by long days and slow sunsets.

2. A natural playgroundIn the Garden Route, wild nature is everywhere – and often right on your doorstep. The area is defined by the Indian Ocean and two impressive mountain ranges, the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma, that run parallel to the ragged coastline.

The towns are encircled by indigenous forests and have immediate access to a vast expanse of peaks, beaches, lakes, gorges, rivers, promontories and estuaries. So, whether you’re an adventurous type or simply like lolling around in the sun, the Garden Route is an inviting playground.

3. Animal kingdomThe Garden Route boasts an array of unique species of fauna and flora, including the Knysna seahorse, the delicate pansy shell, the dwarf chameleon and Brenton Blue butterfly (sadly, all of them endangered). Even so, the forest elephants are on the rebound and a wealth of avian species (most prominently the Knysna Loerie, the Malachite Kingfisher, the African Fish Eagle and the African Black Oystercatcher) attract birders from all over the world. Popular with tourists too, are the dolphins and whales that are playful in their abundance, the latter from May to September.

4. Adventure and sportExplore the forests and hiking trails, seek adventure on the rivers and estuaries or, if you are inclined to be more sedentary, soak up the sun on vast, unspoilt beaches. The region boasts countless outdoor activities such as horse riding, hiking, yachting, fishing and canoeing. For a more pronounced adrenalin rush, get into the more extreme sports of abseiling, paragliding, scuba diving, sea kayaking or water skiing, or try some of the best mountain bike routes in South Africa. 5. Food lovers rejoiceFrom farmers’ markets with fresh organic garden produce to award-winning artisanal bakeries; from road stalls with traditional treats to nouveau cuisine served in upmarket sea-facing restaurants; from oyster shacks to craft beer breweries and boutique wine farms, the Garden Route caters for many palates and budgets. {Cool Spot} An unexpected gem

W ine estates are synonymous with Cape Town and the mountainous peaks and

valleys surrounding it, right? Wrong. Drive through the Klein Karoo and you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Even farther east, in an area known as The Crags (midway

between Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley), you’d be astonished to find Bramon Wine Estate.

Named after Peter and Caroline Thorpe’s children, Bram and Manon, this family-owned and -run estate has broken new ground. With their award-winning Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) sparkling and still wines, the success of Bramon’s vineyard has brought a plethora of new vineyards to the area, paving the way for a new wine route: Plettenberg Bay’s Bubbly and Wine Route!

Having grown up on a wine farm in the Worcester area, Peter thought vines would

thrive in the cooler climes of the Plett area. Planting their first vines in 2000, a non-traditional bubbly was born. Their dry brut has the delicate characteristics of the sauvignon blanc cultivar, the only one produced in the country. Bramon is adding a still chardonnay as well as a traditional chardonnay MCC to its range of wines for the 2013 vintage.

The wines can be tasted at the estate’s popular restaurant. Languorous lunches include homemade breads, meze treats, organic salads and oysters rounded off with decadent homemade desserts. More information, www.bramonwines.co.za


{Day Trips} Explore the Garden RoutePlettenberg bay (east)Keurboomstrand, Nature’s Valley, Tsitsi-kamma Village and the Tsitsikamma Nature and Marine Reserve are all situated to the east of Plettenberg Bay; to get to these destinations, follow the N2 towards Port Elizabeth. Along the way you can, among others, marvel at monkeys, feed elephants or snorkel at the Storms River mouth. Nearer Plett, the Robberg Nature Reserve, a peninsula, has three walking trails and the famous Nelson’s Bay Caves. It is also a good vantage point for viewing whales and dolphins. Entrance fees are charged.

Knysna (north and northwest)If you want an epic cross-country adventure (north), drive into the Gouna indigenous forest, marveling at the forest giants as you go, or take the Prince Alfred Pass (it’s a gravel road and the cliffs are precipitous, so be prepared for a long, leisurely drive) to Uniondale, De Rust or Prince Albert via Meiringspoort; the Klein Karoo and Karoo have many hidden gems. Or meander north-westward along the picturesque Rheenendal Road, lunch along the way or enjoy a family picnic at the fabulously remote forest setting of Jubilee Creek.

wilderness and george (west and northwest)Wilderness boasts 2,500ha of National Park comprising five rivers, five lakes, two estuaries and 18km of coastline. It is famous for its wildlife, especially birds (visit the Malachite bird hide at Langvlei), canoeing and walking trails. Victoria Bay is a surfing magnet. Farther north, the epic Outeniqua Pass beckons. Follow it to Oudtshoorn (here you can visit the Cango Caves, an ostrich farm or view rare white Bengal tigers) and push on to the Swartberg Pass, Die Hel or the wine farms of Calitzdorp.

RistoRante enRico a hub of merrimentEnrico Iacopini has come from Rome, via Melville in Johannesburg, to Keurboomstrand. Blue eyes sparkling, he explains what brought him and his wife Ornella to the Garden Route

You used to run a very popular restaurant in Melville called Roma Pizzeria. How did you end up on the coast? I used to make pizza at Mamma’s in Yeoville. In late 1981 I opened Roma in Melville and later became subject to an armed robbery on the premises. After the horrible incident I went back to Italy (circa 1997), travelled and regained my self-confidence. In 2004, an old Roma customer turned friend told me about Keurboomstrand and a restaurant premises that was available. So I came down to look at the place, I fell in love with the magic of Keurboomstrand, and the rest is history!

How did you conceive Ristorante Enrico and what was the guiding philosophy? I started Ristorante Enrico together with my beautiful wife Ornella. I remember standing outside the restaurant terrace admiring dolphins surfing; I looked left, I looked right and only saw beautiful blue sea. I was getting wet by the waves breaking on the rocks just in front of me. I thought: Imagine catching fresh fish and eating it just here with a nice ‘bomba’ (their unique pizza bread or focaccia, which blows up like a balloon). Yes, I’m going to tell people, “Enjoy the view and fall in love with my food!” I called my wife from there and told her, “This is the place! You’ll also fall in love with the magic of Keurboomstrand.” She did!

What sets you apart from the other top restaurants in the Garden Route? I’m driven by my passion for real food, food that is created by the freshest

ingredients, and an inborn understanding of what works.

How do you stay in touch with global trends or flavours? It’s easy if you love food and people.

Your marketing slogan is: ‘Any closer, you will get wet.’ So is it correct to assume your signature dishes are seafood? Yes, our fishing boat goes out every day (weather permitting), providing our guests with the freshest line fish available. Fillets or whole fish (grilled or Enrico’s way), seafood salad, linguine frutti di mare and prawns are just too delicious!

What is your personal favourite on the menu? Fish Enrico: baked in the oven, with a lot of imagination and without taking away the freshness of the ocean. But I also love our ‘bomba’, and our rump Enrico: thinly sliced rump topped with parmesan shavings, fresh organic rocket and extra virgin olive oil. And of course our pizza!

What do you love most about your job? What I do isn’t a job but a passion, so I love everything about it. My best is creating a dish.

In hindsight, what would you do differently? I would build a wooden bridge from our terrace to the rocks in front of us with a few tables for more adventurous guests who like to dine al fresco.

Your restaurant is known for its jovial and convivial ambience. How do you achieve that? We love working in such a beautiful place, and our team is part of the family. We laugh, we are happy, we make people feel happy, and we give them an experience. They can feel our hands-on approach and our passion. Guests become friends.

Other than your restaurant, give us a few more reasons why tourists ought to visit Keurboomstrand. It has a Blue Flag beach and Cathedral Rock, Arch Rock and the Cave (all within walking distance) are amazing sites to visit. There is a beach kiosk providing beverages, hiring of beach umbrellas and chairs, toilets and change-room facilities, and safe, supervised parking. In season we have life guards guaranteeing safe swimming, a beautiful self-catering lodge above the restaurant, Arch Rock Caravan Park next door, and many excellent B&Bs around. They will make your holiday unforgettable.

Plettenberg Bay has an abundance of beaches, all of them incredibly beautiful. Central is the most crowded and busy, being used for marine vessel launches and in close proximity to waterfront shops, restaurants and amenities.

Robberg beach boasts Blue Flag status and is accessible via wooden walkways at a number of points, but from different

roads. Robberg 5 is the only part of the beach that has ablutions, parking and access from Beachy Head Road. It is also one of Plettenberg Bay’s most popular family and swimming beaches, thanks to ever-present lifeguards – and, depending on the nature of the break, it is a surfer’s paradise. In summer, it is not uncommon to see pods of bottlenose dolphins, often

We’ve all heard about the horrors of animal abuse: birds captured from the wild, elephants and monkeys tortured to make them perform, wild cats, snakes and other exotic species imprisoned in cages. That said, we should remind ourselves that it is not all bad; sanctuaries such as Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, situated in The Crags, pay testament to that.

At these two venues, all primates and birds are free to roam and forage, to choose their own mates, to be seen or not be seen. Their personal space is never infringed upon, they are not poked, prodded or forced to perform. They live almost as nature intended… wild and free. The only difference is that they do not live in their own habitat. Humans had already removed them from that before they arrived at the sanctuaries – either to be kept as pets, used in experiments, or imprisoned in cages for their own amusement. The lucky ones ended up in Plettenberg Bay at these two sanctuaries.

When primates and birds come to Monkeyland and Birds of Eden, respectively, they stay for life. They are never traded or

sold, and never forced to breed. They are given the best care possible, as though they have their own retirement home.

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden have cast the blueprint for sanctuaries around the world, leading the way to a truer, more natural environment for wildlife that has no other alternative but to be kept in captivity.

Farther afield, the beaches situated in the Robberg Nature Reserve are more natural and wild. You swim at your own risk, but the aesthetic rewards of being in a location far from the maddening crowds invariably result in a worthwhile excursion.While the Keurbooms lagoon and river serve as a magnet for lovers of watersports, Keurbooms beach is a more sedentary location, and its craggy surrounds are ideal for meandering walks, coastal explorations and fishing off the rocks. The Bitou river estuary is also a fishing hot spot and a major attraction for birders.

Nature’s Valley, the farthest of these beaches from Plett, is a delightful combination of all of the above and worthy of a day trip. During high season there are life guards and, if you should feel adventurous, options aplenty for exploration: take a canoe up the Groot River or walk to Salt River mouth; amazing discoveries are guaranteed.

My Place | Knysna

Zachary’s restaurant at Conrad PezulaExecutive chef Geoffrey Murray explains how his love of travel, organic ingredients and local produce have entrenched Zachary’s as one of South Africa’s finest restaurants

You were based on an Indian Ocean island when the owner of Pezula approached you. Tell us the story? Yes, that’s right. I was the chef at an exclusive private island resort in the Seychelles, called North Island, and the Stewarts were regular guests. They spoke to me about their project and it sparked my interest, so I came to see what they were building. But it was the passion of what they wanted to create that lured me out of one paradise and into another.

When you conceived Zachary’s, what was the guiding philosophy? That we create a restaurant that embodies the philosophy of being as local as possible, working within the seasons and embracing the Slow Food movement. And that we create a restaurant at a hotel, and not a hotel restaurant. I think we’ve succeeded!

What sets you apart from the other top restaurants in the Garden Route? I think it’s our constant evolution of what we produce, while still maintaining a strong conviction to our ethos that creates both a sense of consistency and surprise.

How do you stay in touch with global trends or flavours? Travel, first and foremost. Every year I go back to the States to visit my family and I always

combine it with a food trip to some part of the world that might be sparking my ‘foodie’ interests.

What are the signature dishes? No real signature dishes, but what I hope people will recognise is our signature style of always approaching what’s best available in season.

What is your personal favourite on the menu? We only recently started with the new winter menu, so it’s too hard to pick a favourite. Although, we are making a dish with a four-week dry-aged rack of Karoo lamb and pressed confit lamb’s breast that’s pretty unique and phenomenal. You ought to try it!

What do you love most about your job? That my job is what I love to do and am most passionate about: creating, cooking and teaching!

In hindsight, what would you do diffe-rently? I only look back in reference, never to change anything.

What would you do if you weren’t in the restaurant business? I’d either be a rock star, or an architect.

How do you relax? When time allows, travel and discovering something new. Or if time doesn’t allow for travel, dinner with friends, a great bottle or two of wine and lively conversations.

Knysna is encircled by beaches and inviting rivers and lakes, most of them within the radius of a 30-minute drive. Noetzie is arguably the most inaccessible beach (be prepared to climb many steps on your way back up!); Coney Glen is a hidden gem (you have to hop over the eastern buttress of The Heads); and you’d better plan a long outing if you are considering Brenton-on-Sea and Buffalo Bay – but both will reward you with spectacular waves and vistas, as they are situated along a 7km stretch of coastline.

Buffs, as Buffalo Bay is known among the locals, has Blue Flag status and is a magnet for surfers. Bollard Bay on Leisure Isle is by far the most family-friendly beach. It is located in the lagoon and kids can wade and play in waist-high water without the need for lifesavers.

If you find the Indian Ocean too rough, or on days when the wind whips blue bottles onto the beaches, do yourself a favour and head for the rivers. The Knysna River, inland from the White Bridge on the N2, is ideal for picnics and leisurely swims, as is the Goukamma River en route to Buffalo Bay. Other favourites are the more distant Diep, Hoëkraal and Karatara Rivers as they enter Swartvlei.Then there are the lakes: situated near Sedgefield, Swartvlei is demarcated

Local sightings confirm that the Knysna forest elephants are on the rebound, but the chances of you seeing one are about as good as Julius Malema returning to the ANC fold.

Meanwhile, at Knysna Elephant Park you can hug some of these tame behemoths,

walk with them or ride them. The salt marshes at Leisure Isle are good for spotting waterfowl, as is the Goukamma Nature Reserve at Buffalo Bay; fish eagles nest upriver.

Island jetty. Also see the seahorse at Featherbed Nature Reserve and 34 Degrees South. You can also enjoy boat- or land-based southern right whale watching from May through November. Bottlenose dolphins are abundant throughout the year.

Drupkelders: You have to make your way to Biebieshoek to get there. When you do, the rock pools and waterfalls will blow your mind. A friendly warning though: don’t even think of going down there if it’s raining! And be sure to get a permit from one of the forest rangers.

Water, water everywhere!

Although Wilderness boasts roughly 18km of uninterrupted coastline and a vast number of beaches, most of them are located within the national park, which means they are far removed from parking and other public amenities and have no lifesavers on duty. The stretch from Kleinkrantz to Gericke’s Point is particularly distant and offers excellent beachcombing terrain.

The safest swimming beaches are on either side of the Touw River mouth, just off the N2, where the NSRI offices are also reassuringly located. Parking, showers and

toilet facilities are abundant. Leentjiesklip and the other beaches immediately adjacent to it are the best protected from rip currents. In summer the former serves as a landing pad for the ubiquitous paragliders who launch from the crest of Map of Africa; it offers braai and picnic facilities, too.

The best surfing spot, especially for beginners, is Victoria Bay, located farther south-west and closer to George. Set in a lovely cove surrounded by rugged cliffs, it can get very crowded at the height of the season. A lot of holidaymakers staying in George often frequent the beaches

(Herolds Bay, Glentana, Bothastrand and Pienaarstrand) that are situated in a south-western sweep towards Mossel Bay. The Klein Brak and Groot Brak estuaries form part of this natural playground.

The best rivers for swimming and watersports (such a canoeing) are, however, to be found in Wilderness. Both the Kaaimans River and Touw River are ideal for rowing and leisurely swimming. And Island Lake is often a hive of ski-boat activity; windsurfing and sailing are popular pastimes too. More information, www.georgetourism.org.za

Action-packed holiday adventures don’t get much better than the Wilderness National Park. It stretches from the Touw River mouth to the Swartvlei estuary and beyond, where it links with the Goukamma Nature Reserve, giving welcome protection to five lakes (some of them serving as protected bird sanctuaries) and the Serpentine, which is the winding strip of

water joining Island Lake to the Touw River at the Ebb & Flow rest camp.

Waterside Grill at Hyatt Regency OubaaiExecutive chef Brian Ng Yuk Shing talks about his cultural background, how it has influenced his cooking style, and culinary surprises to expect in his restaurant

You have a very interesting name and surname – where are you from and how has your cultural background influenced your cooking style? I was born in Mauritius and have been living in South Africa for the past 14 years. My grandparents are from China, that’s where my name comes from. Since childhood I was exposed to various cuisines: Chinese, Indian and Creole, as Mauritius is a multi-cultural society. Most of these culinary traditions have things in common, such as delicate spices that are full of flavour and aroma. The different methods of cooking always help in my everyday food preparation. I always get nostalgic for my dad’s cooking back home.

When Waterside was conceived, what was the guiding philosophy? We wanted to create an interactive, personalised dining experience using fresh seasonal, local ingredients combined with authentic methods of preparation that allow the unique flavours and quality of each product to take centre stage.

What sets you apart from the other top restaurants in the Garden Route? Our philosophy of simple sophistication flows through all elements of the Waterside experience – from the design, set up and the service approach, to the menu – to create a seamless and personalised dining experience unmatched in the Garden Route.

How do you stay in touch with global trends or flavours? As a chef working for Hyatt International, my team and I have the unique advantage of being able to travel and work internationally for short periods on a regular basis. We are also constantly in touch with our colleagues around the world (Hyatt has more than 260 hotels worldwide), and we have a strong culture of exchanging ideas.

What are the signature dishes? Our prime beef tartare, slow-roasted pork belly and giant tiger prawns are three of the stand-out items on our extensive menu, but all our guests love our delicious homemade, charcoal-grilled roosterkoek. We make this humble South African favourite fresh daily using a traditional recipe with a special twist (best you come try it!). And then, of course, there is our Cape goose berry compote to finish off your meal on a sweet note.

What is your personal favourite on the menu? Our chateaubriand, designed to be shared between two guests. This dish defines our philosophy of serving sophisticated cuisine in a familiar and comfortable style.

What do you love most about your job? Like all chefs I’m passionate about good food, but nothing surpasses the satisfaction of our guests enjoying their dining experience and coming back for more.

In hindsight, what would you have done differently? Operating a restaurant is an ever-changing journey, with exciting new challenges around every corner. Because we try to offer our guests a unique, person-alised experience, I don’t think there is an absolute right or wrong way. For this reason I wouldn’t change anything; instead, I believe in constantly evolving.
