The exhibition “Untamed Skin – the Romanian Blouse” takes the story of the exquisite Romanian blouse back to its roots as a wild, yet delicate garment which was always worn close to the skin, hand-crafted using natural textiles and pigments, and

embroidered with primordial symbols and patterns.

For this exhibition, fashion designers Alexandru Nimurad and Alexandra Abraham and jewellery-designer Vika Tonu developed their collective clothing, accessory and jewellery collection around the blouse as an organic structure, honouring its distinctive local background and visual history. The exhibition is curated by Roxana Gibescu (Galateca Gallery curator).

Imbued with narrative and memory, each garment designed by Alexandru Nimurad interprets a specific IA (Romanin blouse) that used to be worn during some of the important ritual events in someone’s life such as birth, marriage and burial, the jewellery collection “Ensemble of Bro-ken Pieces” conceived by Vika Tonu with Alexandru Nimurad echoes the story of Queen Marie of Romania and Alexandra Abraham juxtaposes the architectural and anatomical leather harnesses over long dresses made of natural cotton, in the same technique as it used to be made in

the old days.

“Untamed Skin - The Romanian Blouse” travels to Antwerpen, Belgium’s fashion capital, after being first showcased in February 2015 as part of London Fashion Week - International Fashion Showcase, where it was awared three Special Mentions at all categories: Best Country Exhibition,

Best Emerging Designer (Alexandru Nimurad & Vika Tonu for their jewellry collection) & Best Curator (Roxana Gibescu).- A multidisciplinary art installation -

Ieder door Alexandru Nimurad bedacht kledingstuk interpreteert een specifieke blouse zoals die placht te worden gedragen op de belangrijkste rituele gebeurtenissen in een mensenleven: geboorte, bruiloft en begrafenis; de collectie “Ensemble of Broken Pieces”, die Vika Tonu samen met Alexandru Nimurad tot stand heeft gebracht, vormt een weerklank van de levensgeschiedenis van koningin Maria en heeft als centraal element het bedroefde hart – het hart dat Hare Koninklijke Hoogheid aan Roemenië heeft nagelaten, terwijl Alexandra Abraham architecturale

en anatomische lederen garelen plaatst over lange, uit natuurkatoen vervaardigde jurken, zoals deze vroeger werden gemaakt.

De expositie “Untamed Skin – The Romanian Blouse” reist naar Antwerpen, de Belgische modehoofdstad, na eerst te zijn getoond in het kader van de London Fashion Week – International Fashion Showcase 2015, waar zij drie prijzen in de wacht sleepte: “Special Mentions” in de catego-rieën Best Country Exhibition, Best Designer (Alexandru Nimurad en Vika Tonu voor hun gezamenlijke collectie sieraden), Best Curator (Roxana

Gibescu, curator Galateca).- Multidisciplinaire kunstinstallatie -

De tentoonstelling “Untamed Skin – The Romanian Blouse” richt zijn aandacht op de oorsprong van de IE, de Roemeense blouse, een geraffineerd en delicaat kledingstuk, dat echter ook een zekere ongetemdheid bezit. De ie wordt altijd op de huid gedragen en is met de

hand vervaardigd uit natuurvezels met geborduurde oersymbolen. Voor deze tentoonstelling hebben de drie ontwerpers Alexandru Nimurad, Vika Tonu en Alexandra Abraham in eendrachtige samenwerking een collectie kledingstukken, accessoires en sieraden ontwikkeld rondom de vorm en de symboliek van de Roemeense blouse, waar ze een nieuwe interpretatie aan hebben gegeven, zich baserend op hun eigen artistieke identiteit, maar tegelijkertijd de rijke

bagage van het Roemeense culturele erfgoed honorerend. De curator van de tentoonstelling is Roxana Gibescu (Galerie Galateca).

ALEXANDRU NIMURAD is a fashion designer with a passion for graphic design. He studied both architecture (at the Bucharest University of Architecture and Urbanism) and fashion design (at the

Bucharest University of Arts). One might found his projects on online platforms such as SUB25, A PAGE, DASH, Casseur Magazine and on acclaimed international fashion publications I-D Magazine, All Hollow or Cockaigne. In 2014 he was part of the Glastonbury Festival Creative Team, as a graphic artist and set designer. For “Untamed Skin –The Romanian Blouse”, Alexandru Nimurad created garments that reinterpret the Romanian blouse (“ia”) and the jewellery capsule collection “Ensemble of Broken Pieces”, made together with fellow designer Victoria Tonu.

ALEXANDRU NIMURAD studeerde architectuur en kledingontwerp, maar grafisch ontwerp maakte eveneens onderdeel uit van zijn

opleiding. Zijn projecten zijn verschenen in publicaties als I-D Magazine, A PAGE, DASH, Casseur Magazine, KALTBLUT, Z!NK of Cockaigne. In 2014 maakte hij deel uit van het creatieve team van het Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, waar hij in de hoedanigheid van graphic artist en set designer aan bijdroeg. In 2015 nam hij deel aan de International Fashion Showcase 2015 – London Fashion Week, waarvoor hij het project “Untamed Skin – The Romanian Blouse” tot stand bracht en het “Ensemble of Broken Pieces”, de collectie

sieraden die hij samen met Victoria Tonu heeft vervaardigd.

ALE X ANDR A ABR AHAM studied both architecture and fashion-design in Bucharest. She is an unconventional accessories designer with an interest for the role and multiple possibilities of the harness in fashion as a link between clothing and accessories.

She collaborates regularly with Romanian brands, art galleries and fashion events and has been highlighted in some of the important national and international fashion publications, online and offline, such as Le Mile, DeVour, Bissous, Jute, All Hollow, SUB25, Unica, The One, Beau Monde, IMute, Whisper, Glamour. In 2015 she participated in the International Fashion Showcase 2015 - London Fashion Week and at the Design Salon in Bucharest – Galeria Orizont, where she received the “Award for originality and excellence”.

After graduating The Interdisciplinary Course of Art and Design at the Huddersfield University, in the United Kingdom, VIC TORIA TONU chose jewellery, print and collage as main areas of activity. Vika Tonu Design was born in June 2013, concurrently with the first ring series entitled ‘Dimiourgia’, revealing a universe of

jewellery loaded with symbolism and power.

Her style can be described as minimalistic, geometric, one of simplification striving to achieve the essence of things. Her projects have been showcased part of International Fashion Showcase 2015 - London Fashion Week, Contemporary Jewellery Fair AUTOR 10 - Bucharest, Romanian Design Week, Avanpremiere Gala 14 at the Museum Of Modern Art Bucharest, ROD, Play Design

Fair and on numerous online and offline fashion publications.

VICTORIA TONU, afgestudeerd aan de Huddersfield Art and Design College in Groot-Brittannië, is voornamelijk werkzaam op het gebied van sieraden, collage en print. Vika Tonu Design is ontstaan in juni 2013, tegelijk met de eerste reeks ringen “Dimiourgia”, die een universum van met symboliek en alchimie beladen sieraden onthullen. Haar stijl kan worden omschreven als minimalistisch, geometrisch, een streven naar simplificatie om door te dringen tot

de essentie. Vika Tonu heeft vooraanstaande collecties vervaardigd in samenwerking met de volgende modeontwerpers: Alexandru Nimurad, Imaculatura, Kledingatelier Naiana Vatavu, en haar projecten zijn getoond in het kader van de International Fashion Showcase 2015 – London Fashion Week, de Beurs voor Hedendaagse

Sieraden AUTOR 10, Romanian Design Week.

ROXANA GIBESCU is momenteel curator bij Galerie Galateca in Boekarest, en heeft daarvoor gewerkt bij het Roemeens Cultureel Instituut in Londen. Ze is curator geweest van projecten en tentoonstellingen die onderdeel uitmaakten van de London Cultural Olympiad 2012, het Londense Horniman Museum, de Bucharest Biennale 6, het Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival, het Andy Warhol-museum in Pittsburgh, het Nationaal Museum Brukenthal en de International Fashion Showcase – London Fashion Week. Momenteel studeert ze met een beurs aan CESI (Centre d’excellence dans l’étude de l’image), onderdeel van de Doctoraalopleiding van de Sorbonne 1 in Parijs.

ROXANA GIBESCU is a curator of contemporary art and design at Galateca Gallery in Bucharest and previously she worked at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London. She curated projects at international festivals as well as exhibitions in museums from London (Horniman Museum and Cultural Olympiad), Pittsburgh (Andy Warhol Museum) and Romania (Brukenthal Museum, Bucharest Biennale 6 and Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival BIEFF 2014). Curently, she is researching for her PhD at Sorbonne Paris 1, part of her thesis at CESI Bucharest. At London Fashion Week 2015, Roxana Gibescu

won for “Untamed Skin” the Special Mention for the Best Curator.

The Romanian Cultural Institute Brussels is a governmental organization which raises the profile of the Romanian culture in BeNeLux. Its high-visibility projects unveil both the uniqueness of the Romanian cultural heritage and the creativity of the Romanian contemporary artists. Holding the presidency of the EUNIC Brussels (European Union National Institutes for Culture) in 2015, the institute equally engages in joint multilateral projects with all members of the cluster.

GALATECA is a project created by Romanian artists, designers, architects, curators and communication specialists set out to showcase na-tional and international design projects and original contemporary art, aiming to create valuable exhibitions of applied and multimedia art.

Het Roemeens Cultureel Instituut Brussel (IRCB) is een overheidsinstelling die tot taak heeft de Roemeense cultuur in de BeNeLux te bevorderen. De ICRB-projecten met een hoge zichtbaarheid weerspiegelen de uniciteit van het Roemeense culturele erfgoed en de creativiteit van de hedendaagse Roemeense kunstenaars. Het ICRB bekleedt momenteel het voorzitterschap van het samenwerkingsverband EUNIC Brussel 2015 (het Europese netwerk van nationale culturele instituten) en ontwikkelt veelzijdige culturele projecten in partnerschap met de overige leden. GALATECA is een vernieuwend project dat kunstenaars, ontwerpers, architecten curatoren en communicatiespecialisten samenbrengt. De galerie biedt onderdak aan nationale en internationale projecten op het gebied van de hedendaagse kunst en design en organiseert tentoonstellingen van toegepaste en multimedia-kunst.

ALE X ANDR A ABR AHAM, afgestudeerd aan de afdeling Mode in het kader van UNArte Boekarest en houdster van een diploma Architectuur aan de Universiteit voor Architectuur en Urbanisme “Ion Mincu”, slaagt erin, door middel van haar verzameling garelen, een perfect evenwicht te vinden tussen kledingstukken

en accessoires. Ze heeft meermalen samengewerkt met verschillende modeontwerpers en kunstgaleries in Roemenië, en haar creaties zijn verschenen in diverse internationale vakbladen zoals IMute, Whisper, Glamour, Le Mile, DeVour, Bissous en Jute. In 2015 heeft ze deelgenomen aan de International Fashion Showcase 2015 – London Fashion Week en de Designsalon Boekarest – Galerie Orizont, waar ze het “Diploma voor originaliteit en

uitmuntendheid” van het Filiaal Design UAP heeft ontvangen.
