Malicious, Dangerous and Alarming This week I was made aware of a very hurtful piece of ‘gossip’ that is being circulated in our school community. It is being claimed that “school money is going missing from the school office” and that “a parent volunteer has sticky fingers.” The person then stated they are not prepared to give any money to the school when this is happening.

This claim is ludicrous! The Department of Education, which insists on the highest standards of integrity has many checks and balances in place to safeguard public money. If it had happened let me assure you it would have been very quickly detected and due process to deal with the perpetrator would be initiated.

Gossiping behaviour of this nature disappoints me greatly. Money has not gone missing. Such ill-founded accusations are counterproductive as they cast a shadow over the competency of school staff and the integrity of each of our wonderful volunteers.

If you hear gossip of this nature please insist that the person come and share their story with me and if they are reluctant please contact me and confidentially inform me what is being claimed so that appropriate action can be taken.

Boys Hockey News The boys hockey team has had a very exciting couple of days. Last Wednesday they travelled to Albury in preparation for a game on Thursday against Corowa Public School. In glorious weather, the boys apprehensively took the field. With a team depleted through ill health and injuries they were unsure what to expect. The team soon settled into the game with Tyson Allwright the first to score after 13 minutes of play. The score remained this way at half time with the boys establishing an impressive game play, supporting each other in defence and attack. There was some great passing between Regan Davis, Blake McCarten and Max Price.

Jarred Croke was impenetrable in goal. The game was sealed when, with 6 minutes before the full time whistle, Blake McCarten made a break up the side line, passing the ball to Isaiah Druett who found the back of the cage with a well-placed hit. Corowa however were not prepared to admit defeat and, spurred on by the desire to score, capitalised on Crookwell’s lapse in attention in the dying stages of the game, and slotted one over the line with the final whistle seeing a score of 2-1.

The boys enjoyed every moment of their 2-day trip: taking the time to explore the submarine at Holbrook, walking across the border from Albury into Victoria and some even finding time to drop a fishing line into the Murray! As a result of the win the team became quarter finalists and had to face up again on Tuesday against Parkes Public School in Bathurst.

The weather conditions for the trip to Bathurst were in complete contrast to the trip to Albury. In pouring rain and flooded creeks, the team made their way to Bathurst, this time fit, healthy and free from injury. This was always going to be a tough game: Parkes Public School is known for its strength in hockey and boasts a number of PSSA state players. Our boys defended well with Jarred Croke having a brilliant game in goal. The boys’ attack was also strong and the game could have gone either way but unfortunately it was Parkes who eventually found the back of the cage from a short corner with only 38 seconds of the game remaining.

The two games played were fast, fair and gave a display of good sportsmanship and incredible growth in hockey skills by our boys. They have every reason to be very proud of their achievements and I hope that they have enjoyed the experience of playing hockey and will continue with the sport. Of course success does not come without hard work and, while the boys trained and played hard, they could not have reached the State Quarter Finals without the dedication, commitment and hard work of Megan and Dave McGregor.

Fruit & Veg Fanatics at Flying Start Great discussions about healthy eating took place in the Kindergarten classroom on Monday morning. It was fantastic to hear about the variety of fruit and vegetables that children in Flying Start eat. We made a graph of our favourite vegetables and discovered that tomatoes were the most popular and peas were the least popular! After collecting our data we engaged in a fruit matching activity with our friends and enjoyed a healthy snack.

Fruit and Vegetable Month has arrived at Crookwell and students have begun enjoying a variety of activities to encourage more fruit and vegetables into our diets. Students have enjoyed healthy smoothies, made delicious vegetable muffins and slices and sorted foods into healthy categories.

Book Week Book Character Parade Despite the gloomy weather on Tuesday, our assembly hall was filled with colour and activity as once again, we held our annual Book Week character parade. An amazing array of characters and books were represented by the students in this year’s parade. It was lovely to see the confidence of our Kindergarten students as they introduced themselves and their characters on the microphone to the audience. Congratulations to all the students on their wonderful costumes this year.

Congratulations to all participants of the Premier’s Reading Challenge 2015!!

All students have completed their reading logs and the Challenge has officially completed. All students who signed up to the Challenge have successfully read all the required books. Well done to everyone who participated in the Challenge this year. Students who successfully completed the Challenge will receive their certificates in their classes.

Thank you to all readers and parents who assisted in the Challenge this year. Year 2, 3 and 4 Excursion to Questacon On Tuesday 15th September (Week 10) students in Years 2, 3 and 4 will be attending an excursion to Questacon, the National Science and Technology Centre, in Canberra. The excursion will provide students with a wonderful opportunity to engage with science through fun, interactive and relevant learning experiences.

Students will leave the school at 9:15am and return at 3pm. The cost of the excursion will be $29 which will include entry to Questacon, as well as the bus fare. Students are not to bring any money with them as they will not be purchasing at Questacon.

Students will need to wear full school uniform and bring a hat, recess and lunch.

Speech Pathology Your child may be eligible to claim a rebate through Medicare for five sessions of speech pathology, per year.

In summary: • GP assesses client’s eligibility for Chronic Disease Management Medicare items (known as EPC) plan and makes referral to speech pathologist.

• Client (or the client’s parent) requests a referral to a known speech pathologist or the GP recommends one.

• Client must have an CDM plan before they can claim a rebate from Medicare.

• Up to maximum of five sessions can be claimed per calendar year.

• The five sessions may be with one health professional or a number of allied health professionals.

• Client claims rebate using invoice provided by speech pathologist

Who is eligible for an EPC plan? Clients who have a chronic condition and complex care needs that are being managed by their GP under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan may be eligible. A chronic condition is one that has been present for six months or longer. Clients have complex care needs if they need ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team consisting of their GP and at least two other health care providers, one of which may be a speech pathologist.

Woolworths Earn and Learn sticker sheets, full of stickers from the supermarket checkout operators, are quickly filling the Crookwell Public School collection box that is outside the Goulburn Woolworths and arriving at the Crookwell Public School office in droves.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week From 31st August until 6th September it is National Literacy and Numeracy Week. The students have many opportunities to experience great literature in the form of books at Crookwell Public. As a key element of our Literacy Week celebrations the students will be participating in a Read– A – Thon.

The students will be reading books in class as well as listening to serials being read to them by their teachers. All these books can be included in each student’s reading tally for the week as well as any books they read at home. Attached to the back of this week’s News and Views is a Read - A - Thon sponsorship sheet for the students to gain support from family, friends and neighbours that they know.

Five cents per book is all you need to sponsor.

The money that is raised will be donated to support a grassroots literacy project in Gulu, Northern Uganda. In some classrooms in Gulu it is not uncommon to have between 50 to 100 children, with the physical setting being under a mango tree. A journalist who has retrained as a primary teacher is working with these children on a phonics program designed to help children to read.

$4 000 is required to provide this basic reading program to over 60 primary schools in Uganda. If each of our students is able to provide a small contribution through your sponsorship of their Read – A – Thon then we can make a change in the reading opportunities and achievements of children in Uganda.

How can my child participate? • Over the weekend accompany your child to gain

sponsorship from family, friends and known neighbours.

• Next week your child will record all books read by themselves or read to them.

• On Sunday 6th September collect all the sponsorship money and return to school on Monday 7th September.

Literacy Team Enrolling Now For 2016 If you know of families who are in the process of enrolling children at Crookwell Public in 2016 please encourage them to return their Application for Enrolment Forms to school promptly. This will allow staffing arrangements to be firmly in place for the commencement of the 2016 academic year.

VIEW Club Helping To Celebrate Book Week The Crookwell Evening VIEW Club works with the Smith Family to support its Reading for Life Program. As part of its unlocking opportunities through education and learning philosophy the local branch of VIEW decided to Celebrate Book Week by recognising a Crookwell Public School student who had progressed ‘from a reluctant to a switched- on reader’.

Nathan Gauci was identified as the ‘switched-on reader’ and was presented with a $25 gift voucher from Mrs Ros Robinson from the Crookwell Evening VIEW Club. Nathan’s gift voucher will be spent at Davies Newsagency allowing him to purchase more books to read to become an even more switched-on reader.

Fruit & Veg Month 2015 – Let’s Go Green! Our school is participating in the fun of Fruit & Veg Month, which runs for the last 4 weeks of this term - Monday 24th August to Friday 18th September.

As part of Fruit & Veg Month, students will be involved in various classroom and school based activities that aim to encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.
