Happy Birthday St. Mary! This Pentecost weekend, we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming down upon Jesus’ early followers, beginning a new era for God’s people. Many see this as the birthday of the Church, because from then on, the apostles carried the message of Christ out to the world.

When our family lived in China, and as we traveled globally for business, we attended various Catholic churches. We may not have understood the language, but we knew what was happening. I love that no matter where you are in the world, Mass is similar. There’s a consistent order, familiar songs and the same prayers. This allows Catholic visitors to get involved in Mass, singing and praying with the locals!

I enjoy seeing how churches localize universal beliefs. In India, statues of Mary holding baby Jesus are wrapped with a saree (Indian dress made from colorful fabric). Incense, which plays a major role in Thailand’s culture, is used during services. In Singapore and Brazil, beautiful wall mosaics highlight Bible stories and saints. Colorful Christmas lights surround the Blessed Mary painting in a Chinese cathedral. Some in Europe use instruments and choirs to worship, while others in Malaysia have only their voices, so they sing simple, catchy tunes and do it mightily! For Mexicans, it is common to touch holy symbols such as crosses and statues. With youth servers, sometimes I have to chuckle… just as our own kids in Waverly may need prompts about what to do when serving, so do kids halfway around the world. We really are similar at our core.

I’ve noticed churches can be a haven despite the surroundings. An Indian neighborhood I visited was dangerous, with run-down housing, many small shop owners struggling to earn a living, and even pigs burrowing through nearby garbage. However, the church was nice. It had a powerful mission to energize people for Christ’s work ahead of them that week. Even when away from home, there is always comfort that our one and only God is everywhere and constantly at work. Despite location, language or status, we are one church family, uniting to serve each other.

Since his resurrection, Christ is no longer physically with us, but he sent the Holy Spirit to give life to the Church. Now it’s our turn to use our gifts to be Jesus’ hands and feet to create good. These gifts look different for each of us but were given to extend the grace of God in a tangible way.

Matthew West’s song “Do Something” is an encouraging reminder that God gave us skills. How will you use yours for good this week?

…People living in poverty Children sold into slavery The thought disgusted me So, I shook my fist at Heaven Said, "God, why don't You do something?" He said, "I did, I created you" If not us, then who If not me and you Right now, it's time for us to do something…

our parish collected furnishings for before Christmas is adjusting well & are grateful for the support of our parish. Thank you to all who donated furniture, household goods & money, as well as those who loaded and unloaded furniture. Mary Lou Ungs and I have been visiting the family, as well as volunteers from a Cedar Falls church. They are so welcoming and thankful each time we visit. They do have a new need. Mom Christine is expecting a baby

boy in mid-May! They would appreciate baby bed sheets & a few baby blankets. They have many small outfits for a newborn from a baby shower. We don’t want to overwhelm them with clothing, so we will have a request for specific items later. I am constantly amazed at the faith & resilience of this refugee

family. When Mario & Christine were in their early 20’s, they were run out of the Congo by militant forces, who killed some of their family. Their 2 children are Nathalie, age 7 & Shabani, age 4. They also brought Mario’s niece, Esther, age 11, when they escaped to Kenya. She is now 18. There was little help for refugees, & the rest of their family was scattered. Mario said it was difficult to find any work, & he struggled to feed his family. Yet they learned English in their 7 years in Kenya, & endured. If you feel called to volunteer, let me (Nancy Edwards) know.

There is a need for transportation to appointments. My limited knowledge & perceptions of native Africans has changed as I get to know this precious Christian family, children of God. I am blessed in representing our parish with them. - Nancy Edwards

2. Glass jars, ceramic containers or rocks are not allowed; also, if you use wire, make sure not to leave any in the grass.

The following rules apply after June 15:

3. Decorations need to be on the cement foundations or attached/hung on the monument. They cannot extend over the edges where they interfere with the mowing.

4. Artificial wreaths are allowed provided they are attached to the monument or mounted on a rod placed in/against the foundation.

5. Trees, shrubs & perennial flowers are not allowed on individual graves.

What You Should Know About the

NEW TAX LAW & CHARITABLE GIVING

Now that the 2017 tax season has passed, our atten-tion turns towards the recently passed Tax Reform Law and its potential impact on charitable giving in 2018. Below you will find some information and, hopefully, some helpful guidance as responsible stew-ards of God’s many gifts.

So, what will change? • The standard deduction (allowed on federal tax forms) will nearly double to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married couples. This change (coupled with other restrictions) will reduce the num-ber of individuals and families who itemize their fed-eral taxes. Fewer people itemizing their federal taxes will mean that fewer people will be receiving a federal tax deduction for cash gifts given to charity.

But, what won’t change?

• Many different avenues of giving still remain very lucrative! Gifts, such as, those receiving a tax credit (for example, the STO), appreciated stock gifts, gifts of property, grain gifts, and IRA charitable rollover gifts will all continue to offer excellent ways to save tax. • The tax benefits of charitable giving will remain the same on your state taxes in Iowa, since those still have not changed. • The charitable deduction for those who will continue to itemize is still very much available and, in fact, has been enhanced, allowing individuals to deduct up to 60% (up from 50%) of their adjusted gross income to charity.

And, most importantly…

• Our reason for giving hasn’t changed! Rather than giving in order to save on tax, we give to a cause, to a mission, in the name of Christian charity. The mes-sage of Christ was, is, and will forever be the expec-tation that we help those in need by—among other things—being good stewards of the many gifts with which we have been entrusted. Supporting the mission of Christ through the sharing of our gifts at the local, diocesan, and universal levels is still very much a part of our identity as Catholics.

Other things to consider:

• Certain individuals and families might end up saving some tax under the new law. Perhaps those who do will think to donate a portion of those savings through charitable giving. • Even this year, a certain number of us will be receiv-ing a tax return. A generous option might be to share a portion of that return through a gift to a charity that supports the poor and disadvantaged or per-haps to our parish community.

his/her specific situation.
