Welcome, to the 2018 Confirmation class! We at St. Mary are welcoming over 30 high schoolers who are Confirmed as of the 5:15pm Mass on April 7. The first line of our first reading today, taken from the Book of Acts, Chapter 4 verse 32 says, “The community of believers was of one heart and mind…” That line is so simple and perfect. Those first believers just wanted to follow the ways of Jesus Christ. That first line speaks volumes of our newly confirmed. The newly confirmed are of one heart and mind. They, too, just want to follow the ways of Jesus Christ.

They are all wondering what to do next. How do the newly Confirmed follow the ways of Jesus Christ? They want to be a bigger part of their larger church and faith community, but how do they accomplish this? Many times I heard my Dad, who has been an Ordained Deacon for almost 43 years, say to people who are new to the Church, “Start reading the bible by beginning with the Book of Acts. Read about the earliest church and what those people did.” Reading the bible can be daunting, sometimes it could seem laborious, but do it anyway, starting with Acts.

Pray. Know that “My strength and my courage is the Lord and He has been my savior.” (Psalm 118:14) Talk with God about the little things; ask Him for the deepest desires in your heart. Then, thank Him, always. Pray first thing in the morning, when you eat meals and when you go to bed. You can also pray before and after a test, before meeting up with friends, and any other time in between. Always know that “...the Spirit is truth.” (John 5:6) If your prayer life is steady and honest with God, you’ll know what is right and what you need to be doing. The Holy Spirit will speak to you.

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us of how Jesus can be present among us. Sometimes, “seeing” Jesus in our lives is pretty easy. Other times, we ask for a sign like Thomas did. Be prepared because those signs that are asked for can be big, bright, bold, almost “neon,” because Jesus doesn’t want us to miss Him a second time. Be watching for Jesus in all of your everyday, ordinary parts of life. He can show up where you least expect Him and when you need Him most, even if you don’t yet realize you need Him.

All right, class of 2018; read the Bible, pray, and

watch for Jesus in your everyday lives. Those three

things, along with the indelible seal of the Holy Spirit

upon your soul that you received at Confirmation can

be the backbone of your life. Your community of

believers from St. Mary and the Catholic church

beyond are here for you - now, GO!

# While Ole was driving, he saw

the flash of a traffic camera. He knew he wasn’t speeding, so he wondered why the camera was taking his picture. Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot. Again the camera flashed.

Confused, Ole circled the block even slower, but the camera flashed again. Thinking this was funny, Ole drove past 2 more times going slower each time.

Two weeks later, Ole got 5 tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt.
