Law enforcement officers are required to wear ballisticvests, sometimes referred to as bullet-proof vests. Theywork by trapping spinning bullets in the fibers that the vestis made of, slowing the projectile and diffusing the shock.Most vests now have a plate in the front for even more protection.

I have a friend whose life was saved by one of these vests. He had been taught about what theywere made of and how they worked. I think that it was safe to say that he hoped the vest couldsave him if he was struck by a bullet. But one day my friend was involved in a gunfight. The gun-man shot the officer and the vest worked. After this, the officer made a transition from believingthat vests could work to believing in the vest that he wore.

Similarly, there are people whose faith in Jesus Christ is academic. They have been taught thatJesus died for the sins of the world but they have never trusted Him personally to take away theirsin. They may have been instructed that Jesus rose again so they could be justified before aholy God, but they have never trusted in Him personally. There is a world of difference betweenbelieving that Jesus died for the sins of the world and believing in Jesus and knowing the for-giveness of your sin.
