TODAY’S READINGS AND REFLECTION First Reading — The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Psalm — Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading — Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]). Gospel — Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11). STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CALENDAR OF SOCIETIES / GROUPS / MINISTRY

Weekly Offering Report for the Week

We are a Tithing Community following God’s Plan for Giving. The key to understanding how God wants us to give to the Church is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2, “On the first day of the week [Sunday] each of you should set aside whatever you can af-

ford,” In return for the Lord’s generosity. In the last week our people returned to his Church the Following:

Weekly Offering Report for February 23rd, 2020 First Collection: $4,032.–, Children: $170.-, Second Collection: $1,258.–

“Our weekly offering is one way of saying: we belong to the Lord… and one another. What Does YOUR weekly offering Say? Pray for His guidance THEN renew your commitment to Tithing”.

Fast & Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

A Reflection on Lenten Fasting If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

From the Desk of the Pastor... Del Escritorio Del Párroco... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

“Let us renew our lives with penance, let us fast and weep before the Lord, that our God, rich in mercy, might forgive us our sins." With Ash Wednesday we begin this new Lenten season with the blessings that come from fulfilling many religious practices which our church wisely asks of us and recommends: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. These three practices of piety were very important for any good Jew and in the time of Jesus and the first Christians, they were very important and were fulfilled to the letter of the law which would indicate the goodness of the person. However, for their effectiveness there is a condition: they must be done without boasting or ostentation; therein lies the good intention. During this Lent, how will we put fasting and prayer and almsgiving into practice? We can participate each Friday in Holy Mass and the Way of the Cross with a renewed sense of atonement and a review of life that leads us to live as true brothers and sisters in Christ. May this Lent help us to return to the Lord by making this time a priority in our lives and in our hearts.

We are a bit delayed in starting the Annual Catholic

Campaign 2020. Soon we will view the video to help motivate more of our parishioners to make a commitment. We thank those, a minority, that make and fulfill their commitment. Also, we call on that majority who do not take part in this good cause and hope that at this time they are encouraged to participate and make a contribution. May God reward you for your self-giving and generosity. We hope to see good results from the in-pew pledges.

With the funds realized from the Generations of

Faith, we are now in the planning process to construct a bathroom in one of the sacristies. We trust that all goes smoothly, and we can bring this last project to completion. Remember that together we will continue doing great things for the benefit of our parish.

Abundant blessings to all, Fr. Jose Francisco Herrera, Your servant

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: First Sunday of Lent Monday: Julian Calendar Lent begins Tuesday: St. Katharine Drexel Wednesday: St. Casimir Friday: World Day of Prayer; Abstinence; First Friday Saturday: Ss. Perpetua and Felicity; First Saturday SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL (1858-1955) March 3 Born into Philadelphia society, Katharine was an infant when she lost her mother. Her father remarried and the couple taught their daughters that their wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared with the poor, whom they fed and cared for in their home. Invited by priest friends to witness firsthand the destitution on Native American reservations, Katharine resolved to devote her inheritance to this apostolate and enter a contemplative order. When, however, in private audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child, why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination. Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including Xavier University, New Orleans, the first dedicated to pro-fessional education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II can-onized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practical charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long the distin-guishing mark of American Catholics.”

TEMPTATION

Every conquered temptation represents a new fund of moral energy. Every trial endured and weathered in the right spirit makes a soul nobler and stronger than it was before.
