PROGRAM A

Nature meets Music

(in German language)

In Kino und Fernsehen ist Neue Musik eine Selbstverständlichkeit; jeder kennt sie. In den

meisten Konzertprogrammen dagegen erscheint Neue Musik nur selten und hat noch immer

mit vielen Vorbehalten zu kämpfen. Dabei zeigt doch gerade sie uns wie schön Klänge in ihrer

natürlichsten Form sein können. Kann die so vertraut erscheinende Natur dabei helfen,

uns Neuer Musik anzunähern?

Um auf diese Frage eine Antwort zu erhalten, entwickelten Studenten des Studienganges

Kultur und Management (B.A. / M.A.) der Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz den Projektzyklus

„Natur trifft Musik“. Beim ersten Turnus im Oktober 2011 öffneten Komponisten, Biologen und

Studenten eine Woche lang ihre Augen für die Natur und ihr Gehör für die Neue Musik. Im

Vordergrund stand dabei der Austausch zwischen Naturwissenschaftlern und Musikern.

Ausgefallene Orte wie ein Tierpark oder ein Biosphärenreservat sorgten für das nötige Flair

um Musik in der Natur zu erleben und bleibende Eindrücke zu hinterlassen. Beide Seiten

ließen sich dabei inspirieren und es entstanden eindrucksvolle Kompositionen, mit zum Teil

neuen Instrumenten. Mit Roberto Fabbriciani, Florenz, war einer der weltweit bedeutendsten

Vertreter der Neuen Musik für Flöte präsent. Seine Uraufführung „Ode an den Karpfen“

schaffte es auf die Titelseite einer Boulevardzeitung.

Auch 2012 holen wir die Neue Musik wieder nach Görlitz, in einer Projektwoche vom 28. Mai

bis 1. Juni. Ein anspruchsvolles Programm mit Workshops, Vorträgen und Gesprächskonzerten

soll den Beteiligten die Möglichkeit geben ihr eigenes Verständnis von Natur, Musikalität und

Komposition zu hinterfragen. Wir haben Spezialisten aus verschiedenen Fachgebieten

gewonnen, die ihre Erkenntnisse mit uns teilen und sich mit uns gemeinsam den Fragen

stellen: Wo trifft Natur Musik? Was sind Klänge? Wie entstehen Töne? Ist der Gesang der

Nachtigallen Musik? Was haben die Laute der Zikaden mit instrumental erzeugten Klängen

gemeinsam? Was sagen sich Wale in ihren Gesängen? Sprechen werden unter anderem:

In der Pfingstwoche 2012 bringen sie Kompositionen zur

Uraufführung, zu denen sie der erste Zyklus im letzten

Oktober angeregt hatte. Im Gespräch zwischen Biologen ,

Komponisten, Instrumentalisten, Akustikforschern und

Kulturmanagern werden mögliche Stoffe zum Thema

„Geo Sounds“ diskutiert und so Anregungen für den

zweiten Zyklus von Uraufführungen, dann Pfingsten

2013, gewonnen. „Natur trifft Musik“ geht weiter.

Brain Gain through Culture? (M.A. / PhD / Scholars; in English language)

Can art and culture convince young professional

elites to stay, to return, or to resettle in medium

sized cities with a population ranging from 20,000

to 99,000 inhabitants? Which definition of art and

culture has to be applied to develop an adequate

cultural policy?

Today´s functional elites, especially the younger ones with a university degree, prefer

metropolitan areas with over 500,000 inhabitants. These develop a strong pull effect. In

consequence of this brain drain away from the “hinterland”, the demographic crisis typical for

medium-sized cities in most European countries, intensifies. It is not a mere quantitative

problem but a qualitative one. In Saxony e.g., the metropolitan cities have a youth overplus

of 50% in the cohorts 20 to 35 years, compared to medium size cities. Metropolitan cities

have a 100% overplus of academics, compared to medium sized cities. Metropolitan cities

have a 10% overplus of people actually at work compared to medium sized cities. So, where

should medium sized cities take their self-healing forces from? How can countries survive

when the non-metropolitan regions lack young functional elites?

It is evident that society must respond to this problem. This may be on the one hand the

return of functional elites after their study, and on the other hand the arrival of new elites.

For their decision to come or not to come, two factors play an important role. These may be

objective factors, as job offers, salaries, rent index, infrastructure for kids and the local supply

situation. But also subjective factors are crucial. This may be the reputation of the province in

general, the specific reputation of the city, and several soft factors such as cultural and leisure

activities.

Culture may be defined as negotiating the improbable. The medium of enabling us to

undertake such negotiations are traditionally the Muses – within theatre, literature, music,

films we can approach those anthropological patterns which constitute our societies. But what

about the cultural preferences of young functional elites? Do the traditionally subsidized

institutions such as opera companies, museums, galleries and so on meet the needs of this

generation? What is a cultural policy adequate to meet the exigency of medium sized cities to

accroach young elites?

Within the framework of the European Network Culture and Management founded in 1997,

the Institut für kulturelle Infrastruktur Sachsen, the Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz, the

Jagiellonian University Kraków, the Università degli Studi del Sannio at Benevent, the Vilnius

Art Academy and the Tbilisi State University, have started a research project to identify the

factors which play a role for attracting to or keeping young functional elites in medium sized

cities. Following the outcome, strategies should be developed to fight the brain drain within

medium sized cities.

Questions which should be answered through research in several European regions are p.ex.:

1. What role can art and culture play in medium-sized cities to promote the stay or

resettlement of young functional elites?



2. What are the reasons to settle in a city in means of staying or moving?

3. What are the actual and the perceived provinciality of a city?

4. How does the functional elite define culture and in this context: what forms of culture

(receptive or participation culture) are relevant for remaining in a city?

5. What role can artists play to keep the young functional elite in medium-sized cities?

6. The problem of brain drain, is it relevant or interesting for artists at all?

Studying Culture and Management at Görlitz University (B.A. / M.A.)

Der Studiengang Kultur und Management Görlitz wurde vor 15 Jahren, am 1. September

1997, eröffnet. Der Generaldirektor der UNESCO, Federico Mayor, übernahm die persönliche

Schirmherrschaft mit einer bemerkenswerten Begründung:

„Mobilizing support for the arts has become an art in itself. It calls for individuals combining

economic flair, a grasp of social legislation, familiarity with an increasingly diverse cultural

scene, and an uncompromising commitment to meticulous organization“.

1996 hatte das Institut für kulturelle Infrastruktur Sachsen die Implementierung des

Sächsischen Kulturraumgesetzes (SächsGVBl. 1994 S. 175) abgeschlossen. Sachsens

Kommunen hatten nun Geld für ihre Theater, Opernhäuser, Museen und Bibliotheken. Was

fehlte, war ein frischer Wind in den Einrichtungen und Bezug auf das neuverbundene Europa.

1997 wurde deshalb der Studiengang Kultur und Management (damals Diplom-Kaufmann FH)

durch die Hochschule Zittau und das Institut für kulturelle Infrastruktur Sachsen eröffnet.

Gleichzeitig wurde das (informelle) European Network Culture and Management geschaffen,

das in der Zwischenzeit Görlitz unter anderem mit der Jagiellonen-Universität Krakau, der

Universität Nantes, der Universität Neapel, der Universität Pécs und vielen anderen verbindet

(siehe unten).

Der Studiengang Kultur und Management Görlitz ist der einzige Kulturmanagement-

Studiengang Deutschlands, der an einer wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät angesiedelt ist.

Das Curriculum verbindet je zur Hälfte die Hauptfächer Wirtschafts- und

Kulturwissenschaften. Auf die Verbindung beider in Forschungsseminaren, Ringvorlesungen

und Praxisprojekten wird besonderer Wert gelegt. Lehrgebiete sind:

Kulturphilosophie

Kulturökonomie (BWL, VWL, Marketing, Kulturstatistik, Personalmanagement etc.)

Kulturpolitik



Zu den Besonderheiten gehören

Überblicksvorlesungen Kulturgeschichte und Kunstwissenschaften (Literatur, Musik,

Theater, Bildende Kunst etc.), 4 Semesterwochenstunden pro Semester

kostenfreie Sprachkurse in Polnisch, Tschechisch, Russisch, Italienisch, Spanisch,

Französisch und Englisch,

Integration der Künste in das Studium in Künstlerischen Workshops jede Woche unter

Anleitung renommierter Künstler (Konzeptkunst, Musik, Tanz, Literatur, Film etc.),

zahlreiche Projekte in studentischer Verantwortung, darunter die Zyklen „Sommerschule

der Künste“ 2002-2010 und aktuell „Natur trifft Musik“ 2011 ff.

Kunstfeste in jedem Semester

Eigenes Studienhaus mit künstlerischen Laboren und ungewöhnlich guter Akustik

(Haus Klingewalde)

Gastvorlesungen des Ost-West-Kollegs fast wöchentlich im Semester

Die Befähigung zu einem Arbeiten in und für Europa zählt zu den Grundintentionen des

Studienganges. Die interkulturelle Befähigung wird erreicht durch die zahlreichen

Auslandsbeziehungen und Gaststudenten

Auslandspflichtstudiensemester (im 5. Bachelorsemester bzw. im 3. Mastersemester),

Verlängerung auf jeweils ein Jahr möglich

Große Exkursionen und Tagesexkursionen mehrmals im Semester (nach Rom, Venedig,

Nizza, Košice, Prag, Breslau, Krakau, Berlin, Dresden, Kassel-documenta oder in die

kulturgeschichtlich reizvolle Umgebung von Görlitz)

Dual Degree-Masterprogramm Görlitz/Pécs

Die Hochschule Zittau/Görlitz bietet im Studiengang „Kultur und Management“ Görlitz

gemeinsam mit der Universität Pécs das Dual Degree-Masterprogramm Görlitz/Pécs an. Die

deutschen wie die ungarischen Teilnehmer studieren jeweils zwei der vier Fachsemester an

der Partnerhochschule und erhalten Urkunden beider Hochschulen. Arbeitssprache in Görlitz

ist Deutsch, Arbeitssprache in Pécs ist Deutsch oder Englisch.

Let's Go Europe - Study at Görlitz!

Görlitz is the German city with the highest number of sun shine hours. With its 4,000

classified monuments, experts call it the most beautiful city of Germany. The twin towns

Zgorzelec and Görlitz (together almost 100,000 inhabitants) are unique for their cross border

project as ‘Towns of Europe’. Prices meet students’ needs, super-markets are much cheaper

than at Kraków.

The region Upper Lusatia is rich of leisure attractions, natural beauties and cultural diversity.

(190 km), Leipzig (200 km), Krakow (430 km).

Starting in the winter term 2012/13 we are offering to students who do not speak German a

full semester English Language Program in which you can obtain 30 credit points. Small

groups – high interaction – fair quality. The program will include a German Language Unit

(5 cp) and elective modules from different faculties you can freely choose from (other 25 cp).
