O Come Let Us Adore Him
VATICAN CITY--Pope Francis told a group of recently appointed bishops that the world “is tired of charming liars” and that they should embody mercy in their dioceses and not be whiners who promote their own “vain crusades.” The pontiff also told them to be wary of seminarians “who take refuge in rigidity” of practices. “There’s always something ugly behind it,” he said.
Francis made his remarks Friday (Sept. 16) in a speech to newly appointed bishops who have been taking part in an annual Vatican orientation course on their new job.
In his address, the pope focused mostly on the approach they should take as pastors, saying in effect that attitude would do more to build up the diocese than any special management techniques.
“Be bishops who are able to enchant and attract,” Francis said. “Make your ministry a symbol of mercy, the only force able to seduce and attract the human heart in a permanent way.” But, he warned them, don’t make it all about yourself. “This is a danger! The world is tired of charming liars. And, I might say, of ‘trendy’ priests or bishops,” Francis said. “People can sniff out — the people of God have the perceptiveness of God — and run away when they recognize narcissists, manipulators, defenders of their own causes and hawkers of vain crusades.” Trust in the mercy of God, let mercy “form and inform” every diocesan structure, he said, and don’t give up in frustration and “invent bitter speeches” to justify “laziness.” “The complaints of a bishop are ugly things,” he said. Pope Francis made these comments about a year ago.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING
Few Catholics are aware that the topics most addressed by the teachings of Jesus are money, riches, and wealth. They rather think that Jesus came to talk about spiritual realities rather than material things. In truth, Jesus was deeply concerned that human attachment to material possessions would interfere with keeping the most important commandments: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, mind, soul, and strength; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. All of us fall short of the glory of God because we are sinners. But Jesus taught there was a remedy when he said charity covers a multitude of sins. But how hard it is for even church going Christians to give generously as good and faithful managers of all that God entrusts to our care. In virtually every parish there are long lists of members who contribute less than a penny on the dollar….and an even longer list of those for whom there are no recorded gifts. Some boast that they want their gifts to be anonymous, but in truth only a small fraction of annual gifts are made by those who don’t use envelopes. Sadly, many people are afraid to be more generous as they fear this will interfere in their ability to care for themselves and their families. Nothing could be further from the truth for it is only in giving that we receive. But fear not, little flock, for God our Father has decided to give us a share in the riches of his kingdom.

LIFE KIDS, EDGE & LIFE TEEN
SUNDAYS FROM 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM
The goal of our Christian formation programs is to help parents who have a sincere desire to raise their children as disciples of Jesus. Our catechists have little more than one hour a week to achieve this objective. But children are in the care of parents for a much greater length of time. We strongly recommend that parents take part in the ALPHA course that continues on Wednesday at 7pm in the Joyce Center. It begins with a meal. Child care is available. If you do so you will begin to feel more confident about being the primary influence on your children’s faith development.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
Sunday, October 1st
10:15am McConnell Room
For many decades now, the Catholic Church has worked diligently to make our churches and schools a SAFE ENVIRONMENT for all children. Providing such a nurturing environment results in our requiring all who work directly with children and young people in our parish—especially catechists, chaperones, and nursery workers. We also highly encourage all parents with children in religious education classes at all levels to become safe environment trained. If you volunteered to help with the children and have not been trained, you need the training first. Youth who turn 18 require training before they can participate in any conferences or mission camps.

I WAS HUNGRY AND YOU GAVE
ME SOMETHING TO EAT
We are called to become friends with each other, with Christ, and with the least of His bothers and sisters; becoming Holy as God is Holy.
Are you looking for a way to become friends with Jesus’ friends? The poor and the hungry? There is an immediate need for a coordinator of the Street People Ministry. This person(s) will need to be able to plan a monthly meal, purchase the items needed, and to coordinate the food preparation for about 150/200 hundred people. This commitment to represent our parish in the serving of the poor in downtown OKC is one that goes back 25 years. Donna and Burt Renard, the leaders of this wonderful ministry are stepping down after many years of faithful service.

FORMING A BLENDED FAMILY
All marriages have challenges, but for some couples preparing for remarriage, who have children, these challenges are unique. The spouses will have gone through the death of a partner or divorce and will have been deeply affected by these experiences. Often remarriage involves the blending of families, a challenge in and of itself, mostly due in part to unanticipated problems and miscommunications.
“Forming a Blended Family” will be offered by the Office of Family Life, Saturday, October 7 at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 7501 N.W. Expressway in OKC. This class is open to all couples with blended families. There will be many topics approached in this class but some examples are:
Sacrament of Marriage, Communication is Key, Where I come from: The Pitfalls of Family of Origin, Keys to a Healthy Relationship, Issues and Solutions for Minor Children / Parallels with adult children, Finances and the Issues of the Two Families, Maintaining Spirituality in the Marriage and many more.
Sign-in begins at 8:30 with the first session beginning promptly at 9am and will end approximately at 4pm. Please download the registration form from Archokc.org or you may call the Office of Family Life at (405) 709-2709.
ANNIVERSARY MASS
Archbishop Coakley invites married couples who are celebrating milestone anniversaries (25, 40, 50+) in the calendar year 2017 to attend a special Anniversary Mass on October 15 beginning at 3pm at Our Lady’s Cathedral in Oklahoma City. A reception will follow. It is imperative that if you plan to attend please contact the Office of Family Life at 405-721-8944. The Archbishop will be imparting his blessing and the local Catholic community will rejoice in your example and commitment to the Sacrament of Marriage.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD
CONDEMNS ITSELF
Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report contains more evidence for ending the organization’s federal funding. By its own admission Planned Parenthood abortionists killed over 328,000 babies last year. It performs more abortions than breast exams, more abortions than pap tests, and more abortions than “well woman” exams. Undercover videos have caught Planned Parenthood officials gloating over the atrocities committed in their clinics on a daily basis. These are heinous crimes against humanity. Yet Planned Parenthood still received $554 million in public funds last year. That’s almost $1,700 per dead child! There’s no reason why tax-payers should be coerced into sending even one dollar to this killing machine. Congress needs to stop subsidizing Planned Parenthood and it needs to do it now!
