Welcome to St. James Cathedral!

Dear St. James Cathedral Family, During the Priests’ Convocation, Bishop Noonan called upon us priests to observe September as a penitential month, and to set aside a penitential day of prayer and fasting. I’m extending an invitation to all the members of our cathedral parish to also observe a penitential day of prayer and fasting this month on Saturday, September 29, the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, archangels. St. Michael the archangel is our defender in battle against all evil. As such, we seek his protecting intercession over the entire Church. As Catholics, we are well aware of the important role of St. Michael in defending us against Satan. For the greater part of the 20th century, Catholics recited the prayer to St. Michael at the end of every Mass. Pope Leo XIII composed the following prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle! Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. At all the masses on September 29 and 30, we will distribute prayer cards for us to say the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel on behalf of our Church, especially the most vulnerable members of our community. We ask that God will watch over and protect them from all harm and danger, as we ask the Lord to renew His Church. In Christ, Very Reverend Miguel A. González

Reverendísimo Miguel A. González

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. James asks what our love for Jesus Christ can possibly mean if it does

not result in action on behalf of, and to benefit, our neighbor. He

suggests that faith in Jesus Christ is demonstrated most profoundly in

our care for the needy, the suffering, and the underprivileged.

Stewardship includes proclaiming the Good News by putting our faith

into action on behalf of others. In what ways have we been willing to

make sacrifices and renunciations for the sake of Jesus Christ and

our neighbor?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Santiago pregunta ¿qué puede significar nuestro amor por Jesucristo si
éste no se traduce en acción en nombre de, y para beneficiar, a nuestro
prójimo? Él sugiere que esa fe en Jesucristo sea demostrada más
profundamente en nuestro cuidado por el necesitado, el que sufre, y el
menos privilegiado. La corresponsabilidad incluye proclamar las Buenas
Noticias poniendo nuestra fe en acción en nombre de otros. ¿En qué
formas hemos estado dispuestos a hacer sacrificios y renuncias por
amor a Jesucristo y beneficio de nuestro prójimo?
Friday November 9, 2018 6:00PM in the Social Hall
Nikki was born in Karachi, Pakistan and grew up in Africa in a Muslim family. She came to United States with her two young children, seeking freedom from an arranged marriage. Nikki’s life as a Muslim went through a dramatic turn when she encountered Jesus and Mary in dreams and other mystical experiences. These events led her to question the Muslim faith she had practiced for 40 years and led to her journey from Islam to Catholicism.
Fr. Martin’s Column / La Columna del Padre Martín
Part 2:
With the exception of legitimate self-defense, any intentional taking of a human life is recognized by civilized society as a grave offense. There is an innate understanding in all of us that life is sacred and deserves protection. That innate knowledge is a part of Natural Law, which God writes in the heart of each person. We just know instinctively that killing is wrong. For that reason, there is no need to spend much time on the topic of homicide. But it does lead to some interesting questions: What about the taking of an innocent life in the womb? Don’t we find it incongruous that some legislation, including our own in the United States, does not extend? the same protection to the unborn?
To be anti-abortion somehow has become the banner for being a “conservative Catholic.” Such an attitude exists among Church circles as well – the never-ending battles between pro-life and pro-choice movements! I find that absurd. To uphold the dignity of human life shouldn’t just be a “Catholic thing.” It is a human thing.
What about freedom to choose? It is also a right accorded to each of us, isn’t it? Most certainly. Even God doesn’t interfere with our freedom. However, no right is absolute. I cannot exercise my own right when it injures someone else’s right. Can people choose to do whatever they want with their bodies? Sure! Ultimately, we each have to answer for the choices we make. That said, can this freedom be exercised to the detriment of another life – one that cannot yet defend itself? No. Therefore, the Church teaches, “Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (CCC, 2271). This also includes formal cooperation by a third party. Not only do we consider this act to be a mortal sin, but “A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae” (Code of Canon Law, 1398).
Let’s pause a moment to explain what an excommunication is.
An excommunication is a penalty attached to a grave violation of the law. When someone is excommunicated, he or she is cut off from communion with the Church and no longer has the right to receive the benefits of the sacraments. It is a very severe punishment that the Church doesn’t impose lightly on just anyone. Our penal system imposes penalties not to be vindictive, but with a “medicinal” purpose in mind. It is the last resort to “shock” a person into repentance.
There are two kinds of excommunication: ferendae sententiae and latae sententiae. The first refers to a sentence imposed after a trial has positively proved guilt. The second is, for lack of a better word, an “automatic” sentence. This kind of excommunication happens as the result of violating the rule itself. To apply that to our discussion: When someone willfully and freely procures a complete abortion, the act of carrying it out incurs the penalty.
This kind of penalty is so severe that we don’t treat it lightly. There are only seven violations that would result in excommunication. That shows how firmly the Church stands on the sanctity of human life and the protection of ones unable to defend themselves.
Parte 2: Con la excepción de legítima defensa propia, cualquier acto intencional que acabe con una vida humana es reconocido por la sociedad civilizada como una ofensa grave. Existe una com-prensión innata en todos nosotros de que la vida es sagrada y merece protección. Ese conocimiento innato es parte de la Ley Natural, que Dios escribe en el corazón de cada persona. Simplemente sabemos instintivamente que matar es incorrecto. Por esa razón, no es necesario dedicar mucho tiempo al tema del homicidio. Pero conduce a algunas preguntas interesantes: ¿qué pasa con matar una vida inocente en el útero? ¿No nos parece incongruente que alguna legislación, incluida la nuestra en los Estados Unidos, no se pueda ampliar? ¿La misma pro-tección para el no nacido?
Estar en contra del aborto de alguna manera se ha convertido en signo de ser un "católico conservador". Tal actitud también existe entre los círculos de la Iglesia: ¡las batallas interminables entre los movimientos pro-vida y pro-elección! Encuentro eso absurdo. Defender la dignidad de la vida humana no debe ser simplemente una "cosa Católica". Es algo humano.
¿Qué hay de la libertad de elegir? También es un derecho otorgado a cada uno de nosotros, ¿no es así? Seguramente. Incluso Dios no interfiere con nuestra libertad. Sin embargo, ningún derecho es absoluto. No puedo ejercer mi propio derecho cuando interfiere con el derecho de otra persona. ¿Pueden las personas elegir hacer lo que quieran con sus cuerpos? ¡Por supuesto! En definitiva, cada uno de nosotros debe responder por las elecciones que hacemos. Dicho esto, ¿se puede ejercer esta libertad en detrimento de otra vida, que aún no puede defenderse? No. Por lo tanto, la Iglesia enseña: "El aborto directo, es decir, querido como un fin o como un medio, es gravemente contrario a la ley moral." (CIC, 2271). Esto también incluye la cooperación formal de un tercero. No solo consideramos este acto como un pecado mortal, sino que " quien procura el aborto, si éste se produce, incurre en excomunión latae sententiae." (Código de Derecho Canónico, 1398).
Pausemos un momento para explicar qué es una excomunión. Una excomunión es una pena asociada a una violación grave de la ley. Cuando alguien es excomulgado, se le separa de la comunión con la Iglesia y ya no tiene derecho a recibir los beneficios de los sacramentos. Es un castigo muy severo que la Iglesia no maneja con ligereza. Nuestro sistema penal im-pone penas con el propósito de vengarse, sino con un propósito "medicinal" en mente. Es el último recurso para "hacer reaccionar" a una persona para que se arrepienta.
Hay dos tipos de excomunión: ferendae sententiae y latae sententiae. La primera se refiere a una sentencia impuesta después de que un juicio ha demostrado culpabilidad. La segunda es, a falta de una palabra mejor, una sentencia "automática". Este tipo de excomunión ocurre como resultado de violar la regla en sí misma. Para aplicar esto a nuestra discusión: cuando alguien deliberada y libremente obtiene un aborto completo, el acto de llevarlo a cabo incurre en penalidad.
Este tipo de penalidad es tan grave que no lo trataremos a la ligera. Solo hay siete violaciones que resultarían en la excomunión. Eso muestra cuán firme es la Iglesia sobre la santidad de la vida humana y la protección de aquellos que no pueden defenderse.
