One SnowboardingFollowing on from his retirement at the end of last season, Plymouth based former Olympic snowboarder Dan Wakeham recently announced that he will be going into partnership with the British Freestyle Team Head Coach, Hamish McKnight to create One Snowboarding, with snowboard camps being held in Morzine and Avoriaz in France that are aimed at those who are ready to “open their eyes and mind to the world of freestyle snowboarding.” With the likes of 2009 X-Games Slopestyle gold medallist Jenny Jones, two time Olympian Lesley McKenna and GB team member and Sessions pro rider Angus Leith on board to coach alongside Dan and Hamish, these all inclusive one week long camps look set to be of the highest standard. We caught up with Dan for a quick chat about the camps and he told us, “I have been lucky enough to be trained by some of the worlds top coaches and have first hand experience on how to do tricks for the first time safely.” He added, “With the camps, I want to help people progress to the best of their ability and also pick out some young hopeful talent. If any riders really show potential then there is a chance for them to join the British Freestyle and Olympic development team.” As well as running invite only Development Camps which will focus on those identified as the UK’s most talented freestyle snowboarders, anyone who can already snowboard in a confident and controlled manner can book a place on the standard camps where they’ll be coached to push their snowboarding as far as they can. The first One Snowboarding camp is in December, and as all airport transfers, luxury accommodation, food, lift passes and coaching is already in place, all you need to do is book up and get on a flight. So what has Dan got in mind to impress his students? “My speciality is the halfpipe,” he explains. “I like to boost as high as I can in the air with flips and spins. When you get that right then that can be impressive.” If you want to learn more, and to book your place on the camps, go to onesnowboarding.co.uk

We caught up with frontman Matthew Board, who is currently finishing his Masters degree at Dartington for a quick chat to learn more…

What are you influenced and inspired by?Growing up and living in the South West has greatly influenced me. The amazing countryside and communities you meet always drive me to write and perform. I’m inspired by interesting and eccentric characters, European cities, vintage flea markets. Time spent in Ber-lin and Paris have given me a wealth of experiences and inspiration along with the amazing friends I’ve met along the way, gigs on boats, trams, squats and under the Eiffel Tower have all helped to craft these new tracks. I’m also inspired people’s independent creativity and record labels like ‘Woodland’ who create small runs of beautifully hand crafted CDs.

Tell us more about your musical careerI was a solo singer songwriter before I moved back from Bristol to find a band and start my MA. Matthew Board & The Family Tree has really developed over the past year, with Grace Billings on piano, vocals and organ, Sam Craigen on bass, Andrew Hopper, guitar and vocals and Steve Jackson on drums. It’s been amazing to have found such a fantastic group of musicians that are such good mates.

What makes this gig at the Great Hall so special? The gig is the result of the last three years of writing and recording, the band will be accompanied by a string section which has been scored by Sam Swallow of the Hooziers, and as well as having a horn section, we will also be debuting new material written especially for the acoustics of the Great Hall. The Hall itself is such an epic space, the acoustics and grandeur are special and unique.

Where would you like your career to go from here?In the next six months we plan to keep writing from our base in Tot-nes and get back into the Studio to record more album demos. We are lucky enough to be working with Tom Joyce at Sawmills Studios on tracks for our first album.

Bloc Party’s story begins at Reading Festival, 1999. Friends Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack bumped into each other and decided to form a band. They found bassist, Gordon Moakes, through an ad in the NME, and drummer Matt Tong after he auditioned. The band got their big break when Kele handed copies of their debut single to Alex Kapranos, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand, and Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamaq, way back in 2003, and since then their electro infused, guitar led sound has won them critical acclaim and many fans. They’ve released on credible London based indie label Moshi Moshi (along with Hot Chip and The Rakes) and signed with the equally cool Wichita Recordings. With their indie credentials firmly in place, Bloc Party continued to record and release albums (their third and most recent studio album came out in August 2008) as well as touring and playing festivals all over the world.

This autumn sees the band take to the road once more, for their Bloctober tour. 247 caught up with lead singer Kele at home in London on a rare day off, as he was getting ready to visit the Tate then catch up with some friends. “We don’t get much time off,” he says. “And when we do, I don’t want to do anything too strenuous. It’s important to have time to decompress. Generally we get a day or two at home before we have to go off again. That’s how it’s been for the last five years, so this year we’ve been trying to do it differently, just to keep us sane.” He sounds awkward, maybe even hesitant, and more than once asks to move on to the next question – he doesn’t want to talk about the music he’s currently writing. “I haven’t done any interviews for a long time,” he explains. “I’m kind of a bit out of practice.” Kele is notoriously shy, and dislikes interviews. His lack of comfort with being interviewed might be down to his stutter, which isn’t as prominent as you’re led to believe. Occasionally, his sentences snag, but it’s quickly overcome. He seems confident, maybe even a bit arrogant, but hey, this is the lead singer of Bloc Party after all – so we’ll make allowances for his ego.

Described as being highly self critical, 28 year old Kele says that he never thinks

things are finished until he feels he’s given 100%. Fiddling with his shoelaces, he says, “You know, in six months time you might feel differently, but now it’s important for me not to leave things unless I feel that I’ve given everything.” His shoelace snaps off in his hand. “Shit. It’s alright. They were old shoelaces…”

Footwear distractions and his apparent unease at interviews aside, Kele is clearly passionate about music, and seems much happier talking about that. Bloc Party have released remix versions of their first and third albums, although the remix of Intimacy wasn’t received well by critics. Kele defends the remix albums by saying they are a way of putting something out there that could be enjoyed differently. “We’re big fans of dancing, and dance music,” he explains. So if he could work with anyone on remixes, who would he choose? “I’m not sure about a remix but it would be

nice to get Missy Elliott to come and rap on one of our tracks. It would be pretty funny. I’ve got a peculiar sense of humour when it comes to things like that. Well, it wouldn’t be funny, it would be interesting.”

Their third album, Intimacy, is said to have taken a more experimental approach to their brand of spiky guitar rock, using unconventional arrangements and more electronic elements than the band had used before. “On our third album I think we explored and some grounds we’d never really covered. We used, and are still using recording techniques that we’ve never really used before.” He pauses. “I don’t know. It’s hard for me to step back and be critical of our work, because I’m completely immersed in it. But I think we needed to keep things exciting for ourselves, we try to do that with every record, we’ve always been pushing through walls, I guess.” With the music industry’s current evolution to keep pace with the manner in which music is consumed, Kele says that Bloc Party will address this by being

as unique as possible. He explains; “You don’t want to use the same model that every other band uses. We will carve out our own path, then there’s something unique about us and our music. We just want to keep making music that we’re proud of, and keep trying to have a dialogue with our fanbase as opposed to the conventional way of just putting stuff out there.”

The band get their opportunity to refresh that dialogue with their fans on their October tour, when they’ll spend a gruelling month doing 23 dates at venues all over the UK. Kele says, “I’m looking forward to playing some venues again, connecting with our fans up and down the British Isles. Although its quite long, I’m still pretty excited about it.” And do they have anything special in store for their shows? “We did a show recently in Australia where we played the first album in its entirety, and it was just a spur of the moment kind of thing, but it was incredibly enjoyable for us, I think that this tour we’re going to definitely try to reconnect with all of our records, there are some songs that we haven’t played on the second record, or songs from the third record… we just want to make it interesting for ourselves.”

At this point in the interview, Kele is still fidgeting and dodges another question about writing new Bloc Party material. But he suddenly perks up when asked what he’d do if the band split tomorrow. “Ooh, that’s an interesting question,” he exclaims. “I don’t really know… I’d have to start my life again.” He pauses. “If I wasn’t in music, I think I’d like to teach. I’d become a primary school teacher. Everyone I know who teaches says its really hard work, but I think kids are really funny. Inspiring young people to be good is really important, and I guess it’s similar to what we do. I feel like we’re inspirational to young people, and that’s a good feeling. And I think of the teachers I’ve had along the way who have inspired me… Yeah, I think that’s the only thing I’d do if I wasn’t doing this.”

Catch Bloc Party at Bristol Academy on 20 October, Truro’s Hall For Cornwall on 22 October, and Plymouth Pavilions on 23 October. (Or you never know, if things don’t work out, at a primary school near you…)

Kat Marsh is a superbly talented singer songwriter who wows audiences with her powerful voice and skilful use of a loop pedal, creating her own backing track by recording and sampling her instruments and vocals live on stage. She describes her sound as eclectic and evolving, with elements of blues, pop, soul, dance and funk and a wide range of musical influences all showing clearly in her music. She’s been performing solo since 2006, and recently recorded her live DVD at Press Pack Studios in Plymouth, with the launch of the DVD taking place at Annabels in Plymouth just last month. We caught up with Kat and Press Pack head honcho Joe Biddle at the studio just before the DVD launch for a demonstration on just how that loop pedal makes Kat’s sound so unique – go to 247magazine.co.uk to see an exclusive video, filmed and edited by Owen Tanner (Press Pack video producer) and Scot Weller (Fire and Ice Productions).

First picking up a guitar at the age of 16, Kat taught herself to play by learning her favourite songs. “I like playing guitar, but I love playing bass!” she tells us. “I got my first bass when I was 21 and it just clicked.” Alongside her musical talents, her vocal performance is just as impressive. “My voice started to develop when I was about 13. It took a long time to be able to sing properly in front of people, and I’ve never had singing lessons,” she admits. “I’ve kind of accumulated all my knowledge about proper technique and warm ups as I’ve gone along.”

Family videos show a two year old Kat singing for her family, but now you’re more likely to find her performing at venues around the South West with her guitar, her BOSS RC-50 loop pedal and drum machine. She explains more; “I used to loop with a more basic pedal, but I was at Mansons guitar shop in Exeter last year and one of the guys there offered me a big discount on the RC-50 because he’d seen me play before.” She continues, “I went for it and it’s worked out great. It gives me loads more flexibility in terms of making songs and performing. I added an Akai MPC drum machine/sampler a few months after I got the RC-50 so I can record my own beats too.”

Kat’s sound is soulful and funky, and she lists the likes of Whitney Houston and Prince amongst her influences, saying, “I love divas, both male and female – Yma Sumac, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, Jeff Buckley – they’re all big influences. And in terms of music, I really love Lykke Li, the Mars Volta, Crazy Arm, Fink, Beyonce, Regina Spektor and Rage Against The Machine. That’s just a few, I could go on and on!”

With a string of dates around the South West coming up this month, Kat is also making plans to record her album. “I don’t usually plan too far into the future,” she tells us, “some of the coolest things I’ve done have just appeared out of nowhere. I ended up recording vocals for The King Blues album last year, which was totally unexpected. I was just in the right place at the right time. I’d like some more stuff like that to happen!”

Head to 247magazine.co.uk now to see our exclusive video interview with Kat and a few teasers of the DVD. See below for Kat’s tour dates (check her myspace for updates).

Four piece rock/blues/ska band Hey Molly have been together for around three years, and impressively, they’ve spent almost all of that time touring. The Teignmouth four-piece have covered the UK five times over, and travelled around most of Europe, playing gigs in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Holland, Austria and more. They’ve also played with the likes of Muse, Pigeon Detectives, Jack Penate, Calvin Harris and Steve Lamacq. So it’s safe to say they know their stuff. They all admit to being perfectionists too – their live shows blow everyone away but they always feel like they should have played better. Their sound is edgy, messy, heavy, and exciting – so much so that they were asked to support the internationally renowned Muse at one of their sold out homecoming gigs at The Den in Teignmouth on 5 Sept (The Quails support Muse on their 4 Sept gig). The gigs will see them entertain a 10,000 strong capacity crowd that will include industry tastemakers like Zane Lowe – a massive opportunity for the Devon lads. The band will shortly be releasing the lead track from their EP ‘Backstreet Boozer Loser’ (with an album launch in the pipeline). 247 caught up with Perry and Jordan in a small, smoky rehearsal room ahead of the biggest gig of their lives so far…

Hello boys, where are we and why?Perry: Trying to figure out how we play our instruments again. It’s been so long since we’ve played I think I need a crash course.

Why haven’t you been playing?Jordan: We’ve been recording our debut EP for what seems like an eternity. We’re chuffed with how things have been coming along, but I think it’s time we started showing everybody what we’ve been up to. We were writing a lot too, and the new stuff is exciting us. We can’t wait to play it live.

Where did you record and who have you been working with?Perry: Well, we’ve been working closely with Laim Smith, he’s a good friend and has been great with us. We laid it all down at Sawmills. It’s a beautiful place down in Fowey in Cornwall. In the studio we worked with producers Chris Wolstenholme (Muse) and Paul Reeve (Supergrass, Muse, Razorlight), also with a brilliant engineer named Tom Joyce. We were so lucky to get these guys on board, they have all been absolutely amazing. We have also brought other good friends on board

and into the Saucy Cant Records family (our label) including Savo of Inside Management who runs all our PR stuff and Gwilym Howard who is taking care of all web design brilliantly.

When can we expect to hear the new stuff?Jordan: We’ll be airing 3 or 4 of the new tracks at the Teignmouth show. I think you can expect samples on our myspace in the next couple of weeks. We’re undecided on a release date for the first track right now, but we’re looking at late September/early October.

OK, so tell us something....Perry: I have no drum kit at all. I know, we’re a band trying to make things happen and I don’t have a drum kit, ha. Jordan: We V.A.T registered our label last month and got all the necessary business matters sorted. We named it Saucy Cant Records, just to hear people say it on radio, because technically it’s not swearing!

We heard you went on tour to Europe and only made it halfway?!Perry: True...we drank all our money by the time we hit Austria, so we had to cancel Italy and France that time round. Jordan: Yeah and somehow we lived off bread and cheese for weeks.Perry: I don’t think any of us remember much from that tour. Apart from Jerina, a coat that found it’s way onto our van and ended up becoming a legendary token of a mad night out in Austria. What’s happening for you guys after this?Perry: Well, hopefully we’re filming a mini documentary about our day at the show that will be viewable on our myspace soon. Jordan: We’ve also just finished filming our video for ‘Backstreet Boozer Loser’, the first track to be released from our debut E.P. It’s gonna be an ace video.Perry: Other than that we’re in talks with an agency so hopefully, if all goes well, a UK tour is around the corner.

Hey Molly’s debut E.P ‘Backstreet Boozer Loser’ will be released soon. The title track will be available on Saucy Cant Records for download or limited edition hard back from Sept/Oct ‘09. Tour dates will be posted on their website soon.

MaxwellBlack Summers’ Night (Columbia/Sony Music)

The highly anticipated release of the first disc in Maxwell’s Black Summers’ Night trilogy has been long overdue, it’s been eight years since Maxwell’s last album, and the question on everyone’s lips is, can he still deliver? The answer is a resounding yes. The album has a live and organic feel, production from Hod David and Musze (Maxwell’s creative alias) make this album a consistent body of work. From Pretty Wings to Love You and Phoenix Rising they all command attention. No doubt there will be more to come on the next two discs that will complete this trilogy, bring it on.Lekan Latinwo

The Stone RosesThe Stone Roses(Silvertone)

This 20th anniversary repackaged classic is remastered by Ian Brown and original producer, John Leckie. It comes with plenty of bonuses, many of which are excluded in the review version. But the original album is enough by itself, proving that brilliant songs and great arrangements will stand the test of time. I’ll never tire of hearing this album in its entirety, and however many times it’s been said before, and however obvious it may sound, it doesn’t stop it from being a perfect album. Arash Torabi

Various ArtistsSnow Patrol: Late Night Tales (Late Night Tales)

Blimey, Snow Patrol listen to Captain Beefheart? OK, the track included here isn’t one of his experimental numbers, but it’s still a surprise. This is a laidback compilation, and I reckon it’s a PR exercise for the Patrol to gain some cred, but it’s still a pleasure to listen to. Their own input is a cover of INXS ‘New Sensation’. A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Food work well together, and Super Furry Animals and King Biscuit Time are more great selections. OK, lads: now go and make some music that’s not mediocre or bland.Arash Torabi

Various ArtistsMassive Respect(St David’s Ambience Society)

The tracks featured here are from artists who have played the last three Exeter Respect Festivals. Ethnic diversity is the message of all Respect festivals, and this diversity is echoed in the music on this album. Exeter’s own song-based live hip-hop group NUMB rub shoulders with

the king of dub, Mad Professor. At a scary time like this, when the BNP are winning seats, Respect Festivals are more vital than ever before. Look out for Plymouth Respect Festival at the end of October. You can get this album from Future Sound of Exeter at fsoe.orgArash Torabi

The Gaslamp KillerMy Troubled Mind(Brainfeeder)

Gaslamp killer rules, don’t just take my word for it, ask Flying Lotus – he signed him. Expect stupid studio trickery on one minute long sketches, all the way up to some really really crunchy club cuts. Oh and did I mention keyboards? This dude clearly has some crazy shit in his studio so if you’re into sonic hip hop (not The Game) then jump on board – you’re late but there’s space…SUPERDUPERDAN!

A Fine Day For Sailing Honeylands(Pop Noise Records)

Bittersweet lyrics and gorgeous melodies care of Exeter band, fronted by the genius songwriter, Matthew Stead. ‘Honeylands’ represents the traditional indie sound, reflecting the likes of Television Personalities, but with its own warmth, going straight for the heart. The beauty of these songs is made more vivid by the imperfect approach with which they are played. There’s more soul here than any current so-called soul or R’n’B. There should be more bands like this in our area. Arash Torabi

The Victorian English Gentlemens ClubLove On An Oil Rig (This Is Fake DIY)

There’s nobody quite like VEG Club: a band where art school indulgence meets boundless invention, resulting in cranky post-punk songs like ‘Periscope Envy’ that manage to unsettle and pioneer in the same way that Adam & The Ants achieved in 1978. That is to say, they keep their collective tongue firmly in their cheek when bombarding you with off-kilter melodies littered with sonic tantrums. One day they’ll stumble on a hit record. Probably the same day that they split. Backbone

Chuck RaganGold Country (Side One Dummy)

There’s a touch of the Emperor’s New Clothes about Chuck. Sure he paid his dues

with Hot Water Music (and that voice is the most imitated in modern punk rock history) but when you get down to it, his solo roots-country shtick is, y’know, pretty average. It’s patently clear that his heart is in it, and there are enough instrumental embellishments to add colour to the palette, but if you play ‘Gold Country’ back to back with, say, Austin Lucas, the emotional chasm is vast. Backbone

The Dodos Time To Die (Wichita)

A less chaotic beast than last year’s ‘Visiter’, The Dodos’ third long-player is a delicious mélange of neo-folk whimsy, cleverly devised passages and enhanced production values. Throw a newly added vibraphone into the fold and the result is something that wouldn’t embarrass The Shins or Band Of Horses on a good day. Some may find their new-found ‘maturity’ a touch glib. But I’m relishing this shimmering display of melodic creativity to the point of adulation. So there. Backbone

Times New VikingBorn Again Revisited (Matador)

The fact that ‘Born Again…’ was finalised onto VHS tape tells you all you need to know about the none-more-indie ethos at the heart of Ohio trio, Times New Viking. Well, nearly everything. Within the no-fi bustle you’ll find the prettiest of tunes played with an obstinate, Pavement-esque nonchalance and a punk rock brevity (only one song clocks in at over three minutes). Years of over-polished opuses may impede your enjoyment. In which case, you’re not ready for this. Backbone

Makoto In The MixDJ Marky & Friends Presents(Innerground)

Makoto comes all the way from Tokyo to show us why he’s been chosen for this second mix CD in this series. He’s no newcomer and with plenty of releases under his belt on some of the most respected drum and bass labels he has definitely proven himself to be an exciting and diverse artist over the years. The result in this mix is a tight upbeat selection of Innerground music from the past, present and future. Featuring classics from Calibre & Logistics, new beats from man of the moment S.P.Y and some great collaborations from Marky and Makoto, this mix has it all!In:sight/Ollie Evans

I like being mildly terrified by bands. Take Worcester’s SHIRUKUME for instance. They’ve appropriated Mike Paton’s Fantomas, added some Locust ludicrousness, a possessed bark and a dash of post-rock twinkling to arrive at an overpowering noisecore racket that could turn your granny’s

bloomers inside out, especially demented demo opener, ‘Horses For Courses’. Meanwhile, ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’ boasts a towering choral bridge and some eerie toddlers’ voices to up the fear factor. Quite brilliant. They’ve signed to Mother Should Know Records since we received this demo. God help them. myspace.com/shirukume

Exeter duo, PETROL MOON, are rooted in a classic sound that has been pretty much obliterated by years of postmodern parvenus and ironic rock manoeuvres. Their demo album, ‘Since The Beginning’, has washes of softly handled keyboards, guitars and percussive dalliances,

faintly melancholic, with echoes of Tom Petty and Lou Reed and a refreshing lack of posturing: probably because they’re not easily impressionable kids draped in corporate streetwear. Whether the reflective, indignant likes of ‘Vultures’ and the neo-folk frolic of ‘To The Gods’ will find a substantial audience is a moot point. I’d like to think they will. myspace.com/petrolmoon

Did I miss something? I was under the impression that Cornwall’s LIONESS were a naughty rock’n’roll band with Marshall stacks and thick plectrums. They’ve confounded expectations with this new EP of plaintive acoustic balladeering that straddles the line between the Verve (‘If You Can’t Nobody Can’)

and Coldplay (‘Peace In The Stone’). Quite what happened All reviews by Backbone: [email protected]

DEMO OF THE MONTH

Sleeve notes, sleeve design and added guitar duties courtesy of Vince Lee. This can only mean one thing: THOMAS FORD & THE DIRTY HARMONYS wanna blues you a new asshole, and they come pretty close on debut album ‘Separation Street’. Dirty slide, delta growl and delicious harmonica,

with modern Jon Spencer-esque moments, proffer a junkyard authenticity that many aspire to but seldom attain. More gratifyingly, most of the songs are original compositions, laden with a wry sense of humour (to wit: ‘I Wouldn’t Mind Dying But I Have To Go By Myself’), a host of guests, a loving stomp and a knowing sense of history. A raw delight. myspace.com/thomasfordblues

ROCK SHOW

DEMO OF THE MONTHThis month sees the arrival of the long awaited new EP from Axminster’s CRYOSTORM. Having spent the summer working their way to the final of the Surface Unsigned Festival as well as supporting Trigger The Bloodshed, they have also somehow managed to pull out all the stops and record the stunning Vivify EP. With tracks like ‘Five Folded Kiss’ they have really created their own sound in the midst of a vast scene, and they truly stand out amongst their peers.

in between and quite how their fans have taken the seismic shift I don’t know, but they seem to wear their new clothes comfortably enough. Whether it’s a reaction to identikit metal or a commercially-orientated career move, you’ve got to admire their balls. myspace.com/lionesslioness

Bristol’s ZERO PILOT have willingly refused to listen to anything before 1990, or after 1995, which is why their competently played grunge-metal shtick doesn’t really have much resonance. ‘Can You Fly, Bobby?’ has a nifty Kerbdog riff driving through its core and ‘Dirty Halo’ packs a Deftone-fuelled

punch, but Rob Corcoran’s try-hard growl-croon keeps the band locked in a time-warp that doesn’t stand the test of time. Having said that, subcultural trends come around quicker than chlamydia these days, and if/when it does, ZP will be ahead of the Seattle-chasing pack and laughing all the way to the flannel shirt store.myspace.com/zeropilot

In an entirely different Bristol postcode altogether, indie-rockers, CALL THE DOCTOR, are busy melting down their PJ Harvey and Elastica records into one gooey whole and remoulding the blob into chirpy, lady-led pop shapes like ‘Gregory, Yr A Star (You Lovely Little Mouse)’, which is,

quite possibly, the sweetest song name since The Bonzo Dog Band’s ‘11 Mustachioed Daughters’. On the minus side, they don’t really explore the outermost possibilities of their chosen stylings, choosing to play it safe, while Patti Aberhart’s detached voice comes over as a tad contrived. No matter. They’ll definitely improve. I, for one, will be listening. myspace.com/ctdoctor

Meanwhile, over on Murdoch-Space…

Bideford quartet, CHASING LIONS, opt for the politely melancholic post-hardcore route, adding slabs of frenetic Meet Me In St Louis style wig-outs when the need arises. They’ve got a good handle on it which bodes well for their future, unless we’ve all been swept along by the new punk’n’roll wave crashing on these shores.myspace.com/chasinglionsuk

Glastonbury’s polished piano-rockers, THE JOE PUBLIC, have a sampler of their ‘Skin’ EP up on Myspace, but I must be listening to a different band from all the other reviewers. One chump proclaimed, ‘The Joe Public are what Nirvana would have sounded like if Kurt Cobain wasn’t so full of angst’. As if that’s a good thing. It’s not, they’re not. myspace.com/thejoepublic

Electro-pop doesn’t work for me. It sounds like the work of smug, hipster brats who don’t give a shit about anything but ‘niteclubbing’ and crap sex. Birmingham’s TRASH FASHION have an EP ‘I Can’t Go For That’ out this month that throws metal chugging into the herky-jerky synth-disco pot but still ends up sounding like silly bollocks. myspace.com/trashfashion

There’s an elephant in JOSIE AND THE LOVECATS’ room and its name is Rosie & The Goldbug. Both from Cornwall. Both bursting with boho idiosyncrasies. Both trios fronted by keyboard-straddling neo-divas. Lucky for Josie & co, then, that Rosie & co have just split up. But that’s not to take away from their parochial charm and admirable songcraft. And they have a cellist, which enhances the melodrama somewhat.myspace.com/josieandthelovecats

Exeter metallers, VANADIUM, have an album out soon. Judging by their Myspace, it’ll fall somewhere between the menace of Machine Head and the frivolity of Iron Maiden, which may sound good on paper but doesn’t quite live up to it in the flesh. I blame the vocalist, who sounds like he started learning his derivative growl yesterday. myspace.com/hatual

It follows five young men who enter a local talent competition, each looking for a way out and a step up. Along the way they discover fame comes at a price but friendships last forever. The show features classic Take That songs, a local children’s choir of 20 and breathtaking special effects including a 24 foot curtain of rain… could it be magic (sorry!)?

But has the bottom fallen out of the homosexual meat market? I must tour my kingdom to

find out… In these difficult times I feel I should go and comfort my people in the provinces. My friend Damien tells me the men are very hard up in Sheffield. I only hope I’m not too late. I’m 50. The shame of it. This will be an intimate evening – a celebration, no less, of my twenty five years in the camp spotlight: how I got there and why I refuse to leave. Come and see me before they put me in a home for tired old knackers.” With an invitation like that, how can you resist?

Coco Before Chanel (15) 23 Sept: The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington, 01805 624624, plough-arts.org Dir: Anne Fontaine, starring Audrey Tautou, Alessandro Nivola, and Emmanuelle Devos2009/France/110mins Audrey Tautou (Amelie) is perfectly cast in this enthralling portrait of the legendary designer’s early life. The untold story of the young Gabrielle Chanel, born in 1883 the illegitimate daughter of a travelling salesman, who learned to sew in an orphanage – is brought to the screen with a delicately honed script and beautifully captured period style. Singing in a cabaret club where she earned the nickname Coco, Chanel entranced several high society men who aided the development of her remarkable career. In the pre-war years she rebelled against the oppressive conventions of her era and sought freedom and elegant simplicity in her designs for other women.

Everlasting Moments (15) 1 – 3 Sept: The Poly,Falmouth, 01326 212 300, thepoly.org Dir: Jan Troell, starring Maria Heiskanen, Mikael Persbrandt, Jesper Christensen2008/Sweden/Germany/101 minSet in Sweden in the early 1900s against a backdrop of poverty and unrest, and the early days of still and motion photography. A young working-class woman Maria wins a camera in a lottery, and decides to keep it – a decision which alters her life. The camera enables Maria to see the world through new eyes, but it also becomes a threat to her alcoholic womanizer of a husband, as it brings a charming photographer into her life. This masterful drama comes from Jan Troell, a contemporary of Ingmar Bergman, and a consistent chronicler of Swedish historical life since his first films in the mid-1960s.

Flame & Citron (15) 23 Sept: Exeter Phoenix, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk. Dir: Ole Christian Madsen, starring Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen.2008/ Denmark/Czech Republic/Germany/136 minSet in Copenhagen in 1944 and based on a true story, the film follows two freedom fighters who risk their lives working for the Danish resistance. Tensions develop and confusion escalates as double agents ignite fear and suspicion within the group, leading to betrayal. A sharp and entertaining thriller that bristles with period buzz and some superb performances from Lindhardt and Mikkelsen.

Future Shorts 23 Sept: Exeter Phoenix, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.ukA quarterly short film platform presenting challenging and entertaining material from around the world. In association with Phoenix Media. Screenings start at 6.15pm, tickets cost £3.50 (£2.50 conc).

Inglourious Basterds (18) Until 3 Sept: Exeter Picturehouse, 0871 704 2057, picturehouses.co.uk 21 – 27 Sept: , Plymouth Arts Centre, 01752 206114, plymouthartscentre.orgDir. Quentin Tarantino, starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger. US/2009/150 mins/some subtitles. In Nazi occupied France, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish girl who runs a movie theatre in Paris which becomes key to their ambitious plan to kill Hitler himself. Tarantino’s latest will not disappoint fans.

Les Quatre Cent Coups (The 400 Blows) (PG) 30 Sept: Exeter Phoenix, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk

Dir: François Truffaut, starring Jean-Pierre Léaud1959/France/99 minRecently revived, director Truffaut’s first, and arguably finest film is a semi-autobiographical tale of a misunderstood Parisian boy, Antoine. Feeling alienated from his parents and singled out at school, he seeks comfort in the world of cinema, much as Truffaut had done in his earlier life. One of the founding films of the French New Wave movement, The 400 Blows celebrated final freeze-frame shot is a defining moment in cinema history and a ‘must-see’ for all film fans.

Man On Wire (12) 28 Sept: The Church Rooms, Lostwithiel, 01208 873242, lostinfilm.org. Dir: James Marsh, starring Philippe Petit. 2008/UK/USA/94minsRecreated through archive material, Man On Wire is a documentary about Philippe Petit, a French wire-walker who in 1974 broke into the World Trade Centre and staged a wire-walk between the two towers. The story has the suspense and tension of a heist movie and was directed by James Marsh, who was born in the South West. This critically acclaimed documentary is certainly not recommended for people who suffer from vertigo.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct (15) 1 – 3 Sept: The Barn, Totnes, 01803 847070, dartington.org4 – 10 Sept: The Poly, Falmouth, 01326 212 300, thepoly.org4 – 10 Sept: Exeter Picturehouse, 0871 704 2057, picturehouses.co.ukDir: Jean-François Richet, starring Vincent Cassel, Cécile De France and Gérard Depardieu. 2008/France/113 min This film follows the early career of the famous French gangster, Jacques Mesrine. After his army service, Mesrine is seduced by the glamour and easy money of sixties Paris. Mentored by Guido (Depardieu), Mesrine moves swiftly up the criminal ladder, choosing the high risk life of a gangster over the honest life of his family. Fleeing to Canada with his lover Jeanne after an audacious heist, the lure of one big payout tempts Mesrine out of hiding and toward international notoriety.

Modern Life (PG) 16 Sept: Exeter Phoenix, 01392 667080, exeterphoenix.org.uk. Dir: Raymond Depardon, starring Raymond Depardon. 2008/ France/86 minThis is the third in a series of documentaries examining the decline of French rural lifestyles, in which photo-journalist Depardon makes a series of visits to interview dairy farmers in the beautiful, mountainous Cévennes district of southern France. He respectfully and unobtrusively attempts to persuade them to talk about their vanishing lifestyle and language. Audience members who want to experience some French cuisine can buy a combined meal and film ticket for only £10, but it must be booked by 14 September.

Rumba (PG) 28 Sept: The Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington, 01805 624624, plough-arts.org. Dir: Dominique Abel/Fiona Gordon, starring Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno RomyThis film is a colourful, stylish and largely silent slapstick tale of thwarted love and visual comedy. Fiona and Dom are teachers at a rural school who are deeply in love and share a passion for Latin dance. Driving home one night from a competition, they encounter a man on a clumsy suicide mission and, swerving to avoid him, the pair crash into a wall which throws their life into utter disarray. This audaciously funny and infectiously optimistic film maintains a light touch as its characters bumble their way through an onslaught of tragicomic setbacks with gumption and ridiculous antics.

Words: John Barker

Released: 18 SeptDANCE FLICK (15) Dir: Damien Dante Wayans, starring Shoshanna Bush, Chelsea Makela and Damon Wayans Jr. 2009/US/83 minsMegan (Shoshanna Bush) has a dream of going to Juilliard and becoming a dancer. While she is performing at her dance audition, her mother is tragically killed in an auto accident. Megan must move to another city to her destitute father’s apartment which is located in a condemned building. She enrolls in Musical High, an inner city high school and meets Tracy (Chelsea Makela), Charity (Essence Atkins), and Thomas (Damon Wayans Jr.) who dance in a street dance gang. Thomas and Megan connect, and they must face their impossible dance dream together. They try to bring the ultimate dance crew together to win $5000 at the local dance contest. Expect laughs a plenty in this comedy from the makers of Scary Movie.

HOT NEW RELEASES:

Released: 25 Sept SURROGATES (TBC) Dir: Jonathan Mostow, starring James Francis Ginty, Michael O’Toole and Bruce Willis. 2009/US/104 minsIn the near future, humans live in isolation and only interact through robotic bodies that serve as surrogates. When several humans are murdered when their surrogates are destroyed, a cop (Bruce Willis) investigates the crimes through his own surrogate. After a near fatal encounter, the cop’s surrogate is destroyed and forces him to bring his human form out of isolation and unravel a conspiracy behind the crimes. This could be the sleeper hit of the summer with Bruce Willis back on the kind of terrain that so was so successful in Twelve Monkeys.

…So to recap, Bruce Springsteen was three hours of amazing. The next afternoon we managed to wheedle our way into Oxegen Festival for the final day of indie-centric rock’n’roll, with a couple nuggets of pop tripe thrown in for good measure, namely LADY GAGA and KATY PERRY (Naas, Dublin, 12 Jul). Amidst another unquantifiably harsh downpour, THE MACCABEES were impassioned but suffered from a chuff sound. Mind you, they are responsible for one of the albums of the year, so all is forgiven. PAOLO NUTINI did his best to make us aware of the fact that this was the middle of summer, ‘ye know’, by imbuing his old-man voicebox with boundless optimism and folksy charm. The newly reformed SPECIALS sounded awesome, almost freakishly so, delivering a litany of superlative rock steady anthems to remind us of who the true kings of 2Tone really were. Frustratingly, they suffered the worst of the weather by a distance but, in a perverse way, it enhanced the downbeat resignation of ‘Do Nothing’ and the magnificently moving ‘Doesn’t Make It Alright’. By contrast, RAZORLIGHT appeared disaffected, although their back catalogue still resonated with powerpop gravitas. Taking Jesus & Mary Chain to Motown, GLASVEGAS were a revelation but, as feared, the big tent acoustics made mincemeat of the band’s booming dynamics. With the crowd’s help, however, ‘Daddy’s Gone’ was transformed from a heart-wrenching ballad into something approaching a religious conversion. (Trivia Treat: two of the band, James and Caroline, were on our flight back to Bristol. Which was nice.) Now that MANIC STREET PREACHERS have downsized, it was easy to fall in love with them all over again. Untypically, the sound was immense, as James Dean Bradfield navigated the band through a Best Of set that left no era unturned. Welcome back.

Then we went up to play 2000 Trees Festival near Cheltenham (17-18 Jul). A brilliant, independent, two-day fest organised by a group of people who seemed to spend the whole time running around watching the bands – something of a rarity in these times of faceless corporate sponsorship and event careerism. So, apart from the usual self-embarrassment via copious amounts of whisky, I managed to fall in love with six hitherto unheard acts, namely… THE DAWN CHORUS and their heartbreaking indie-folk honesty; SAILORETTE’s quintessentially English vignettes; the none-more-cosmic DIAGONAL’s wholesome, King Crimson-meets-Gong proggy goodness – what all festival bands sounded like in 1973; drop-dead gorgeous Londoner, SARA SCHIRALLI, and her Edith Piaf-meets-Fiona Apple croonsome loveliness; solo synth maestro, CHARLIE BARNES’ breath-taking, looptastic, digi-pop experimentalism; and, best of all, moustachio’ed soul boys, THE BRUTE CHORUS, whose bloozabilly swagger turned the Leaf Lounge marquee into a climactic celebration. Others with a penchant for showmanship were JIM LOCKEY & THE SOLEMN SUN with their downhome, acoustic country airs, IMPERIAL LEISURE‘s hi-energy ska-rock, THE GLORIA CYCLES and their Caledonian folk-pop, and WOJTEK GODZISZ (him from Symposium) with his beardy-poncho indie anthems. Then, of course, there were the bands that you will have heard of. ROLO TOMASSI may be too off-kilter to court mass adulation but their disorientating spazzcore made all other bands seem technically MOR in comparison. However, that isn’t really true because, if it was, then the soul-pop, care-for-the-community-music of KING BLUES wouldn’t have sounded so inspiring or all-inclusive. Meanwhile, indie-punks, DANANANANAYKROYD‘s expertly-supervised ‘Wall of Cuddles’ – two separated halves of the crowd encouraged to run at each other and hug en masse – must surely have been the defining moment of the festival. Well-known but not so hot was AMPLIFIER’s epic but slightly dull neo-rock; BRITISH SEA POWER‘s less-than-thrilling other-pop and FIGHTSTAR’s predictably mild post-hardcore. But it didn’t matter; not with such an abundance of underground talent, heartwarmingly good intentions and not too much rain sloshing around the place. Same time, next year? Yes, please.

Canadian metal-punk overlords, CANCER BATS, don’t mess around with distracting features like subtlety and melody. And why the fuck should they (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 3 Aug)? Instead, they relied on the twin peaks of ground-shaking hard rock riffola and insuppressible volume to make cranial indents; enhanced by Liam Cormer’s charm-laden charisma. Metalcore homeboys, BROTHERHOOD OF THE LAKE, were impassioned and impressive, and we played too. We stood out like a chinchilla in a dog fight. Good job we have sharp teeth. The next day, Cancer Bats played with fellow Torontonians, FUCKED UP (On The Rocks, Newquay, 4 Aug). And what a fucking show that was. CB played out of their skins, clearly relishing the compact, no-stage surroundings; while Fucked Up lived up to their reputation, throwing developed punk riffs out like nailbombs while Pink Eyes lollopped around the venue as if it was his own personal play-pen and we were his toy dolls. And the image of an obese, hirsute man lying suggestively near the bar with his balls hanging out of his skimpy boxer shorts is one that will stay with me for a very long time.

See-ya bye.

The Relentless Boardmasters is officially the biggest surf and music event in the South West and this year was one of the best ever, the sun shone, the bands rocked at Watergate and the whole of Newquay was packed to bursting point. And they even managed to squeeze in bikini mud wrestling on Fistral Beach, all in all, it was a good week, these photos will give you a taste of what you missed...

PLYMOUTH

Words: LTB

Home to just over 260,000 people, famous Plymouthians include Wayne Sleep and Francis Drake… welcome to Plymouth, the city of

discovery… The locals are called Janners, and they’re more cultured than they might first appear. From the cobbled streets of the Barbican to

the lush grassy lawns of the Hoe and the sweeping run from Mutley Plain to North Hill, there’s something on every corner to make your years here memorable.

NIGHTS OUTThe Student Union does a lot of good work and the bar is nice and cheap. It recently had a huge makeover and is much improved, so all you NUS holders should support your union! Beyond campus, you can’t beat a night out on North Hill, perfectly situated near the main uni buildings. Check out Cuba and newly opened Firefly, right next to each other and both catering for a wide variety of tastes – this is party central. Air bar next to Firefly is great for relaxed drinks on warm evenings and the ever-busy Skiving Scholar (serves a pretty mean terminator) and Bac Bar are just a stumble away. The Fresher & Professor is another nearby student pub, and if you’re feeling brave, the Nowhere is great, full of locals even though it’s surrounded by student halls. Venture up North Hill and you’ll witness the delights of Mutley Plain (more bars and pubs) or roll down the hill to Tavistock Place for Ride Café where you’ll find excellent live music on Thursday nights under the legendary marquees, the massive Bank Holiday BBQs and loads more entertainment and drinks deals throughout the week. Opposite Ride Café, The Blush Lounge serves a range of excellent cocktails with a sophisticated feel for those in the mood for being classy, as well as an acoustic night (and they also support a lot of student societies) and Scream pub The Roundabout is around the corner. Nearby Voodoo Lounge is home to more underground nights and C103’s on Union Street on the other side of the centre of town does a raucous Wednesday student night. You’ll find a load more mainstream bars and clubs like Varsity, Walkabout and Revolution in the centre of town. There are plenty of good live music venues around the city too including The Hippo on Bath Street and the White Rabbit at Bretonside Bus Station. If you fancy something a little different (and classier), Annabel’s on the Barbican hosts burlesque and cabaret nights as well as great live music.

HUNGRY?The first thing you should discover is the food heaven known as Jakes (there’s one on Regent Street just around the corner from Ride Café and another in the town centre on Cornwall Street), and they make the best chips, cheese and Cajun sauce you’ll ever taste. As hangover preventer/cure and munchie-killer, it’s worthy of the gods. Work your way through the rest of the menu in your own sweet time! Carpe Diem on North Hill is great for pizza and tapas and they do some brilliant deals as well as serving a good selection of well-made cocktails.

RETAIL THERAPYPlymouth has a fair selection of independent shops too – head to Ebrington Street, situated a short walk from Drake Circus mall (where you’ll find all your high street faves) for a great selection of independent retailers. For funky jewellery, accessories and clothes, check out at Forty Five (they also have a cool coffee shop with a selection of delicious cakes and hot drinks and they print t-shirts so if you need something crazy printed up you need to visit them), skatewear, boards and footwear can be found at core skate scene hangout Prime (they’re opening a skate park in Plymouth soon, stay tuned for more info), and cute homewares shop Home (somewhere for a present for Mum – show her you still love her and she might do your washing up when she visits). Also visit Arena hair salon on the same road for a trim or colour, (their stylists are talented and super friendly and they do great discounts). Box Surf at the top of North Hill is another quality independent retailer with a cute coffee shop, and stocking everything from bags to boards. You won’t fail to notice Westward Bound opposite the uni, it’s one of Europe’s biggest specialist adult retailers – something for the more adventurous ones! And tucked away behind Mutley Plain at Grosvenor House is Faux Couture, your one stop shop for original vintage clothes, accessories and footwear with an exclusive boutique feel.

HANGING OUTEscaping the city is easy – Dartmoor is only a 15 minute drive away and there are plenty of great beaches within 10 minutes of Plymouth – try Bovisands, Wembury or Whitsands Bay for starters. Or jump on the Brittany ferry and head to France or Spain for a 24 hour booze cruise. And for hungover mornings, take a stroll along the Barbican for a nice mug o’ tea/ice cold drink at Cap’n Jaspers. That’ll see you right my lover.

TRUROTRUROTruro is the most southerly city in Great Britain. Truronians like to think their fabulous capital city is giving clubbing mecca Newquay and arty hangout Falmouth a bit of a run for their money these days – there’s definitely a whole load of choice with some cracking new places opening recently alongside some old favourites… Rachel Picken gives us the lowdown.

NIGHTS OUT Some great bars and venues have opened up with new club The Office, the superchic Vanilla and the Old Grammar School all launching within the last 12 months. Of course there will always be the oldies but goldies. L2 and its sister bar Bunters have been catering for the student fraternity for decades. They have a discount card which money off loads of great independent shops, bars and restaurants. Monday nights at L2 are legendary with £1.50 a drink (free entry before 10pm) and to get the old grey matter working (because too much Jeremy Kyle may turn your brain to mush) check out the pub quiz at Bunters on Sunday nights. New kid on the block The Office has also established its own £1.50 a drink nights on Mondays to celebrate the start of the week, along with its neighbour Zafiros. With its fishbowl-esque mezzanine flooring, the Office offers the best in free entertainment – drunken people watching. Locals will always recommend the Old Grammar School, which describes itself as an “independently spirited boutique; a stylishly eccentric, yet subtly located playground” – basically an awesome bar and daytime eatery, perhaps the best lunch spot in town, which transforms into an intimate underground music venue at night.

OUT FOR DRINKS For a tad more sophisticated evening, head to Vanilla, which has just launched its new cocktail menu with over 45 tasty concoctions. Friendly barman Joss recommends the Turkish Delight, Raspberry, Mint & Elderflower Martini and the cheekily titled Mexican’s Breakfast. The coffee is awesome too, with exceptionally chocolatey home-made brownies.

HUNGRY? Fabulous cake can also be located at the Larder in Lemon Street Market – organic and healthy food minus the mung beans. Vendors of possibly the largest cookies know to mankind. Another of Truro’s best kept secrets (until now!) is the beer garden at Vertigo. They will even let you order a takeaway from Asian fusion restaurant Chantek or nearby Nepalese Kathmandu Palace to munch in lush, green surroundings. Many of these bars have special offers, deals and entertainment on the last Friday of each month, between 5pm-7pm under the banner Hang on Fridays. Check out enjoytruro.co.uk, Truro’s comprehensive website for shopping, entertainment, food and drink. For the best in early hours eating, head to Café Cleopatra. Owner Mo never fails to greet me, no matter how obliterated and aggressive I am in my request for cheesy chips. A true gentleman – he’s even on first name terms with my dad. For tasty Indian takeaway, try Shanaz – another of my old man’s favourites, where they call him Mr George Michael. Curious and slightly alarming. The One Eyed Cat bar and restaurant on Kenwyn Street in Truro is in a converted church, and is also a great place for food and drinks.

RETAIL THERAPY And of course you cannot forget shopping. The lovely Poppy at Opium in Nalder’s Court tells me she attracts customers from Exeter who come to Truro specifically for independent shops. For the best in snow, surf, skate and streetwear, head to Attla on Little Castle Street (attlasnowboards.com). Next door is the Soup Gallery, purveyors of excellent, student-loan friendly art and graff. Also check out Artisan Cookshop for cheeky kitchen nick-nacks to brighten up your supernoodles.

RETAIL THERAPYKeep an eye out for the ultimate in green travel – Truro’s own rickshaw will be hitting the streets very soon. You pay a tip rather than a pricey cab fare, but be kind because your pedal-powered cab is being cycled by a fellow student. pedicabcornwall.co.uk

FALMOUTH

Words: Chloe Lyme

Falmouth is only a small town in Cornwall but with the University recently joining forces with Exeter and Dartington, there are now more

students in the town then ever, over 3000 to be precise! The seaside resort has over forty places to eat and drink, some very cool and some that look like

they are from the dark ages, with proper Cornish fishermen to keep you company. With this in mind it is important that you know where the best places to go are… Chloe Lyme, recent Journalism graduate from University College Falmouth, shows us around.

NIGHTS OUTIf you are looking for a good regular night, where you are guaranteed a great atmosphere and entertainment with your friends, then Gylly Beach Café on a Sunday is definitely the place to be. It is located right on the beach with free entry and live music every week. The night starts around 8pm, artists who have played there before include Ben Howard, Karima Francis, and Natty. Many more are set to play this year. With 10% discount on food and drink Gylly Beach Café is the perfect place to end your weekend and chill before your next hectic week of lectures! gyllybeach.com Everyone needs a decent local pub when they are moving to a new place, and the best place by far in Falmouth to go would be The Front, a great pub on the quay. It is one of the few places in town that still has a pub feel without being dirty and smelling of stale beer. It is right on the waterfront, in the middle of town, the perfect place to go before the clubs or just for a relaxing afternoon pint. The Front has four music nights; Mondays are folk nights with real Cornish dancing for all ages! Tuesday is an open mic night for songwriters, Thursday is open mic night for anyone and Sunday night is Jazz night with a regular Jazz band every week. The pub veers away from mainstream music and drinks, with has an amazing selection of Cornish ales and one of the finest selections of rums in town. So if it is a Smirnoff Ice and a pint of Stella you are after, this is not the place for you! thefrontfalmouth.co.uk. There are only three nightclubs in Falmouth and only one is really worth a visit: Shades Nightclub on Quay Hill next to town. It is only a small club, but that shouldn’t put you off. The drinks are cheap, the bouncers are friendly and the music is always good. From a wide range of house, techno, funky breaks, drum and bass and cheesy chart toppers, Shades has got it all. On first entering you might be disappointed by the lack of up-to-date décor or the funky smell that lingers when you are in there, but if you are with enough mates and drink enough £2.90 doubles you are guaranteed a great night. The best night in Shades is Thursday nights with DJ Fat Harry, £2 entry for students all night, cheap drinks all night.

OUT FOR DRINKSIf it is not a pub you are after and you would like some fine cocktails, with music, food and added late night drinking, then the best place in town for all of this is Toast. A superb independent bar with the best music Falmouth has to offer. DJs travel from far afield to whip up eager crowds looking to dance and drink until the early hours. Toast is located right in the centre of town, one of the only bars with a late licence and great food served between 6.30pm and 9.30pm. It has a wide range of music every night from funk, reggae, jazz, breaks, hip hop, jungle and plenty more. Weekends in Toast is where it’s at, every Friday there is a different regular DJ. Recently the hosts have been Skank Marvin, Dante Gabriel and DJ Spinforth from Hong Kong Ping Pong with his funk filled Fridays. Every last Saturday of the month is Electro night with Mitch from UFO, the UK’s longest running electro night. Toast is an all round fantastic bar, with a great vibe and a buzzing atmosphere. toastfalmouth.co.uk.

RETAIL THERAPYIf it is important for you to be wearing the finest gear, then you will need to know where to get it at a good price. So if you are looking for a good independent clothes store in Falmouth then Level Skateboarding would have to be the best place to go. Situated at 50 Church Street Falmouth, Level supplies all the best in skate, street and hard wear brands that the industry has to offer, giving 15% discount to all students. The guys at Level have just started working with the Universities Fashion course to help out with sponsors and putting nights on to help fundraising for the students. levelskateboarding.com. Jam is a groovy independent music shop on the old High Street in town. Not only is it music shop, it is a small café with as well, so you can rummage through vinyl and CD’s on comfy sofa’s with a nice cup of coffee at your side. As well as music, Jam sells a wide range of art, photography and design books at great prices. You can also buy tickets for local music events in the shop. jamrecords.co.uk

When studying in Exeter, you will find that it is an amazing place to live out your student days. A city well known for its nightlife, you will never get bored. If you stick to this guide, you are sure to settle down nicely in Exeter and avoid the student credit crunch! Exeter College Journalism graduate Jenny Pearce divulges some top tips…

NIGHTS OUT Exeter has a great music scene and there is always something going on. Head down to the Angel (in Queen Street) on the last Saturday of the month for Full Melt, a night filled with funky beats, breaks and hot cakes with free entry all night – definitely the best pub night of the city. Don’t miss Beatz and Bobz club nights – they’re the longest running breaks night in the UK, which shows that these guys know their stuff. This month they will be at the Lemon Grove (Exeter University) on the 25 September with Plump DJs, do not miss out! The best student friendly club is Timepiece (on Little Castle Street). It has fun nights that are a bit different, like Salsa nights, and does great deals on drinks (just £1.50 each). Student night is Wednesday when proceeds go to support student societies. One place to avoid is Arena. It is extremely dated, from the décor right down to the music and is a hot spot for drunken bust ups.

HUNGRY? For a pick me up on the way home from a night clubbing, it’s all about the Golden Horn on Fore Street. This place is open till late for all your munchie needs and is cheap as chips. This is a student favourite and even has it’s own facebook appreciation site! Choose this over one of the city’s many burger vans, where you are likely to end up with a free unidentifiable hair with your kebab! Days after the night before would be best spent at Havanas on the Quay. Every first Sunday of the month is comedy night. This is a great place to wind down and watch new comedians from around the UK and as well as serving up tasty food, Havanas also does deals on pitchers of cocktails. Long Island Iced Tea is best! Japanese style noodle bar Wagamamas is situated in Princesshay and is great for affordable posh nosh (well, posher than your average pot noodle anyway!)

RETAIL THERAPYFor all your music needs, Reform Records on Fore Street is best, offering discounts if you are a member of the Beats and Bass Society. They’re also stocking some cool labels now too, so pick up some new clothes whilst you’re selecting rekkids! If you are more of a book person, at the Book Cycle in West Street you can pick up free second-hand books, or make a donation of your choice. For a great selection of high street fashion, head to Princesshay – stores like Cult might stretch your budget but it’s always a good idea to check out the sale rails… Off The Hook on Fore Street is the place to go for individual vintage and contemporary threads and you’ll pick up some great stuff at very reasonable prices.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT Exeter’s very own radio station, Phonic FM, broadcasts on 106.8FM or online at phonic.fm. Check out the 247 Radio show, hosted by Arash Torabi every other Saturday (this month on 12 and 26 Sept), and specialist shows from locally based presenters featuring everything from reggae to the finest in electronic music and drum and bass…
