Stanley Waterfall died on Friday 8thOctober. Stanley was one of thefounding fathers of this publicationand until his recent illness was anactive member on the committee,ensuring the efficient distribution ofthe magazine to all the villages.Others will no doubt write at lengthabout his many skills and attributesbut for those of us connected withmagazine we have lost a truechampion and dear friend. Oursincere condolences go to Ella andthe family at this sad time. A cyclist on the recent DorsetHistoric Churches event noticed the1914-18 War Memorial Plaque on theEast Wall inside the Methodist Chapel.This resulted in a representative from theImperial War Museum coming to learnabout its existence and to have itofficially recorded on the U.K. Inventoryof War Memorials. The location - inside the chapel - isunusual. It is understood that when avillage War Memorial to the 23 men whofell was being planned, agreement on itslocation proved difficult. The churchyard, the Green andinside the Parish Church were all

proposed, but no agreement was everreached. Some years passed and it wasfeared the village would not have a WarMemorial. The Methodist congregationtherefore decided to install this beautifulmarble plaque to honour the memory ofthose servicemen who gave their lives inthe 1914-18 War. For many years, the Methodistchapel became the venue forRemembrance Services with the RoyalBritish Legion etc. It continued to be sountil numbers wishing to attendexceeded the 80-seat capacity of theChapel. Village Remembrance Services arenow held at St. Andrew's Church, wherea brass Memorial Plaque has beeninstalled. John Nile

Recent fouling of The Wriggle by anaccidental slurry spillage, made front pageheadlines in the local press. TheEnvironmental Agency assured concernedresidents that it will monitor the rate ofrecovery of river life and condition of thewater, which has gradually become clearer.

Stockwood Parish Councilmeeting in 2002, when hewas the chairman of thecouncil. He carried out thisleadership role withenthusiasm and skill andprovided essential localknowledge especially aboutparish history. As well asbeing the Chairman heplayed the important role ofunofficially representing thefarming side of the parish. Ihave always felt itis important to have theviews of the farmingcommunity heard at such aforum and John's extensivefarming knowledge oftenproved invaluable during

parish council debates anddiscussions. “ Gerald also remembersthe contribution made bySandra as “Keeper of thatdear little church atStockwood”, not to forgetJohn’s leading role / life andsoul of the party in TheWriggle Valley Players overthe years. Their many friends inthe Parish thank both ofthem for the all time andeffort that they have putinto the community overthe years and wish them thebest of luck in this nextchapter of their lives.

My sincere thanks to all loyalsupporters who sponsored me for theannual “Dorset Historic Churches” cycleride in September.I failed to beat last year’s record of 46churches, having chosen a hillier, morescenic route. However sixty-five milesand 38 churches later, I raised £200 plusaround £50 from Gift Aid. Half of the money collected goes to St.Peter's, and half to historic churchesacross Dorset. It's a great way to seesome of the county's remote churchesand byways AND get some healthyexercise. We need more cyclists nextyear - come on you Chetnole couchpotatoes! John Fripp

St. Peter’s Church, Chetnole The Harvest Festival service on October10th was taken by Yetminster Guides andJohn Reynolds. The collection for the charity

"Send a Cow" amounted to £217.Harvest Lunch followed in the Village Hall.This was a happy occasion with young andold in attendance and the chance to meetsome newcomers to the village. A big “thankyou” to all who helped in any way. The lunchraised £270.71 for St. Peter's.Ann Flew

Churchyard GatewayNew Overthrow Archway and Lantern. In the early 1940's, the original archwaywas removed, possibly as part of thewartime scrap metal drive. Followingprotracted paperwork, permission wasfinally granted to allow its replacement. Asthe new lantern is battery powered it will belit on a 'as required' basis. On Monday 20th September, a largegroup of Chetnolians gathered at the gate totake part in the dedication of the newarchway in memory of Anthony (Tony)Cooper.The dedication was conducted by Rev SimonBrignall with prayers and a most appropriatereading from Psalm 24. The next major undertaking will be therepair/refurbishment of the churchyard wall

Chetnole Chuckers Boules Club The boules season is coming to a close,as the nights draw in, but we shall continueto boule on Wednesday and Sundayafternoons, as long as the weather permits.The annual match between the Chuckers andthe Leighers was held on the last Mondaymorning of September. By adopting thetactic of playing as long as possible, beforehaving to stop for a pub lunch, Chuckers wona closely fought match and retained thetrophy.

On a sunny afternoon on 10th October,two of the three club championship finalswere played to the delight of a large crowd ofspectators, resulting in the crowning of twonew champions: in the Men’s Singles, JohnHead beat Ian Sinnott 2-1 and in the LadiesSingles Janet Ratcliffe beat Connie Wallis 2-0.Well done Janet and John! The final of the Mixed couples has still tobe played.

A ‘Diamond’ CoupleMany congratulations go to Alan and

Honor Ward who recently had theirDiamond (60 years!) wedding anniversary.Sadly, they could not celebrate this asHonor is in a dementia nursing home, buttheir two daughters Kristina and Sheenaand their two sons James (from SouthAfrica) and Thomas (from Norwich) visitedtheir parents. Honor and Alan bought CoastersCottage in 1954; they were working in theGold Coast (now Ghana) when

expatriates were called ‘old coasters’.Both were teaching physics, maths andengineering, and continued to do so untilrecently. They returned in 1985 from Africa totheir many friends in Hermitage, andjoined in fully with St. Mary’s church andwith the Methodist chapel in Yetminster. In 1997 they bought a little battery-electric car; this was white and cubical,and friends nicknamed it ‘Sugar Lump’.They drove this for 40,000 miles. This waschanged to a black Ford Fiesta, stillbattery-electric, which has so far giventhem 32,000 miles of pleasure. They also made a battery-electricride-on tractor, and the photographshows Honor on it. Honor was a keen gardener, Alan isnot, so to make use of their long backgarden he has installed a GSHP (GroundSource Heat Pump). So far he is pleasedwith it, but the winter will tell!

Hermitage & HilfieldVillage Hall Committee Following the recent Annual GeneralMeeting the committee has a new chairman,Sue Bosanquet. Sue replaces Jeremy Cozens, who hasstepped down from the position that he hasheld for 8 years, and from the committeethat he has served on since 1993. Sue spoke for the whole committee, andfor many in the village, when she said that

we owed a big debt of gratitude to Jeremyfor all that he had done as Chairman and inhis previous roles on the committee. Dave Whiteoak of Hilfield was elected asa committee member at the AGM.

Bingo – 9th OctoberThe Bingo and Raffle prizes were (fairly)

evenly divided across the players at thelatest Bingo session which was, as usual, anenjoyable evening. Thanks go to CharlieOsmond for his role as the Caller, and to SueBosanquet and Barbara Atyeo for organizingthe event.

The church looked beautiful for theharvest service on Sep 22nd and even betterfor being full of people with the singinggreatly swelled by the St Andrews singerswho kindly gave up their time to come. Thiswas followed by a very jolly meal at ChurchFarm afterwards when the Bishop ofSherborne could really meet everybody. It is very sad news to hear of the deathof Ian Hoare on the 6th Oct after only a shortspell in hospital; he had been ill for sometime. Our thoughts and prayers are withCaroline at this time.Village Meeting: Please make a note in yourdiaries of the bi-annual village meeting in thechurch on Tues 16th Nov at 7pm.

DORSET HISTORIC CHURCH TRUST RIDE + STRIDE 2010 It always takes time to get all the returns in but it looks as though in

Yetminster we have raised a splendid sum of £902. The doughty cyclists werethe Barfoot family, the Gostick family (whose seven-year-old was going strongwhen the rest were flagging), the Brignall family, John Ferreter, Nick and ClareMcLeod-Ash, and Patrick Moule, while the walkers were a group led by DavidFogden, Brian Rowsell and George Sutton. This is a splendid achievement andif it has been equalled throughout the County we may even, in this 21st yearof the event in Dorset, have brought the grand total over the years to£750,000. This has enabled the Trust to make hundreds of grants andto encourage very many churches of all denominations to get to grips with thetask of keeping their lovely churches in good order, proclaiming their faith asthey have done for so many years. Well-maintained, smiling churches speak ofa faith which welcomes everyone -dilapidated ones give exactly the oppositemessage!

hilst I am not anadvocate ofunnecessary digging –seldom needed inraised beds - heavyand medium soilshould have manure

dug in now, leaving the surface rough forthe frost to break down; lighter soils canwait for spring manuring. Now is the timeto give regularly waterlogged ground somedrainage treatment. This can be done invarious ways: either dig gravel into the soilor, in extreme cases, lay land drainstowards a soakaway.

Flowers Surplus manure or compost should bespread over the empty flower beds (if leafmould is not available) and the soil dugover. Herbaceous borders should beforked over and plants cut down after they

have bloomed. Carnations and pinks thatwere layered can now be potted up andplaced safe from winter’s winds. Dahliasthat have flowered should be dug up andstored, whilst young ones should bepotted up and kept dry throughout thewinter. You will probably need somereserve pansies in the spring, so thin outseedlings and pot up those removed.Peonies can be propagated by taking partof the root.Cuttings It is the time to review which perennialplants are becoming old and will needreplacing soon. Having made yourselections, take your cuttings.Planting Final plantings of snemone tubers,Canterbury bells, pansies, primroses,sweet William, violets and wallflowersshould be made. Irises should be planted ingroups of three in a feature position. Rosesshould be planted and any prunings taken,heeled into the ground in a shelteredposition; no point in discarding them whenthey may strike and give you more plants.

Vegetables

Get the soil ready for spring sowing. Thoseenergetic souls who want to keep warmshould get the hoe going in between thegrowing crops. Collect vegetable refuseand burn or compost it – don’t let it rotbeside the plants. The last of the beetrootand carrots should be lifted and preparedfor the freezer. Celery and leeks needearthing up. Parsnips may need covering.Spinach will continue to crop as it is

thinned. Plant garlic and overwinteringonions (Senshyu Yellow, Red Baron orRadar) and shallotts (Eschalote Grise, orJermor).

Seeds To Sow now: broadbeans(Aquadulce claudia), peas (Pilot, Meteor,Feltham First).

FruitThis isthemonth toplantfruittrees. Currant and gooseberry bushes too.Figs will need thinning. Spread somemanure between the rows of newstrawberry plants.Trees and ShrubsThere’s still time to plant flowering shrubsand trees for next season. Let exercisegenerate some warmth in November’scold and enjoy yourself - and look forwardto the rewards of your labours in 2011!

St Andrew’s Church, YetminsterA season for everything. As the years pass the act ofRemembrance on November 11th grows insignificance for our nation. I have seen thenumbers growing over the past few yearsjust at a time when living memories begin topass into history and we lose those whofought in the great conflicts of the lastcentury. Maybe it is because our forces are onceagain actively engaged in defending ourfreedoms and the younger generationrealise once again the price that must bepaid to protect us all from tyranny. We salutethose who so bravely put themselves in thefiring line for us, and think of the young menand women who never lived to see our day. I have just completed reading themonumental account of the Normandylandings by Anthony Beevor. He reminds usthat it was a citizen army that fought theirway through the deadly hedgerows ofNormandy. They were often outgunned andoutfought by the hardened Nazi troops andthe losses suffered by both sides of theconflict were equal to the losses on thebloody eastern front. A terrible price too waspaid by the civilian population of France whoendured bombing and brutal reprisals by theoccupying forces. It is well to remember the price paid forour freedoms and to give thanks for thesacrifice of so many. It is well to move on too,not to forget but to heal. The writer ofEcclesiastes who penned those famouswords...‘there is a time for everything, and aseason for every activity under heaven’ goesto say ‘a time to kill and a time to heal’I often pause in front of a small oak treeplanted in the grounds of Hilfield Friary by

German volunteers who came to Britainafter the war. The tree reminds us of John’svision of heaven in which there was a treeplanted by the river of life ‘and the leaves ofthe tree are for the healing of the nations’ .The volunteers still come each year as part ofa programme organised by the Germangovernment. Today they form part of alarger international community working withthe Franciscan brothers in the ‘Hilfield Peaceand Environment programme’. They remindus that healing and reconciliation is possibleas we unite around a common cause, that ofcaring for the earth.Our post war leaders were visionaries, theyunderstood that the real war we must fight isthe war against want and disease. Theirvision helped to build the prosperity ofEurope today and brought independence formany new nations. In our generation we stillneed vision as we struggle to ensure thatpeace and prosperity are shared with all andnot bought at a terrible price for our earthand its people.

Yetminster Methodist Church"You don’t have to go to church to be a Christian" Often one hears this point of view,based on the accepted fact that there aremore good people in our communities thanthe one in ten found attending Sundayworship in our churches. Wondering what Jesus' thoughts wereon this subject, I remembered the story ofJesus at the home of Simon [Luke Chapter 7]and the woman who came to Jesus there.Simon, the Pharisee, was an authority onreligious customs and practices. He knewabout the importance of keeping theSabbath and other ritual practices. The woman was almost certainly aprostitute, and not considered worthy ofbeing in such company - indeed, she hadneed of forgiveness for her sinful life. Jesususes a parable to get his message across to

Simon, "..... if a large debt was cancelled .....which was the greatest?". Then, straight tothe point, he says to Simon "You INVITEDME TO YOUR HOME, YOU DIDN'T PROVIDEWATER TO WASH MY FEET ..... etc." "Butthis woman washed my feet with her tears.YOU DIDN'T PROVIDE A TOWEL ..... thiswoman wiped my feet with her hair. HerLOVE has saved her." The moral of this story is for us all.Church-going has its important place in theChristian faith we profess, BUT withoutLOVE it is meaningless. As we attend church, re-charge ourChristian batteries, and be supportive toother like-minded folk, we must live out theLOVE for others that is so fundamental tobeing a Christian, out of church! So maybe

"you don't have to go to church to be aChristian", but I find it helps me!

The poet was rather pessimistic aboutSeptember and we didn’t do too badly forsunshine and cloud-free days, despite havingone of the earliest frosts of the past 10 years.Even so, the nights are drawing in at a rapidlyincreasing rate, and we haven’t yet had theannual chore of remembering to put all ourclocks, watches and video recorders back anhour.Temperatures Our summer was concentrated in earliermonths this year. August was the coolestsince our records began in 1995 and theaverage temperature in September was only13.6 C (56 F), or 6% below normal. The onlyprevious years with below zerotemperatures before October were 2003 and2005. This year the first autumn frost was onSeptember 25, with -1.4 C (29F). Maximum

temperatureswere 6% belownormal butminimumtemperatures felleven moresharply, being15% down.Many tender plants must have been takenunawares.Rainfall August restored greenness to the fieldsand September kept up the good work.There was 25% more rain than usual, but itwas concentrated in fewer days than usual.Sunshine There was only one day without anysunshine but the month as a whole was veryslightly duller than the average. Even so,2010 has now had 1073 hours of sunshine,making it 8% sunnier than the average year.Winds September maintained 2010’s tendencyto be calmer than usual and the peak windspeed was only 28mph. No sign of autumnalgales and devastation - yet!

SPOTLIGHT on our communityAlan Bastone Born in 1927 in London, Alan was a sicklychild and at five was sent to a nursing homein Worthing which he remembers to be

‘more like a prison than a place to get well’and being shut in a dark cupboard for notsitting still in bed! Alan then went tolive with hisGrandmother inHertfordshire whereshe taught him to readand write before, agedten, he finally joinedschool, cycling tenmiles each day. When war brokeout, Alan was recruitedas a messenger boy forthe Home Guard andspent many nightscycling around in thedark, worrying hismother sick. Alan’s school days were short lived for at13 his school was bombed and he foundhimself a job as an office boy in Londonearning 16 shillings a week (80p). Later,working on a poultry farm, Alan kept his ownhens and pigs earning extra money byrotavating gardens. After 16 years he hadsaved the princely sum of £2300, whichenabled him to take on a Council Farm inHertfordshire. Alan bought three Guernseycows for £100, plus a calf, and in 1958 movedinto the four room house along with parents,Doris and Edwin, brother, John andgrandmother Lucy. Initially the house waswithout electricity or hot water and only

a pail in the outbuildings for the loo; Alanhad to milk his cows in a loose box with aportable milking machine and when he filleda ten gallon churn on the first day he thoughthe was going to make a fortune!

Alan boughtFlowers Farm, Hilfield, in1968 and moved in with50 cows and 20followers; his parentsand, brother joining himin 1974. He establishedhis popular fishing lakesin 1977 (the first beingdug as a reservoir in1976 due to a shortageof water which was, andcontinues to be,supplied by the Friary).In 1988 ill health forcedAlan to give up farmingbut not his involvementin the community which

has always been extensive including being:Chairman of High Stoy Parish Council (36yrs);Chairman of Hermitage Village Hallcommittee (16ys); Secretary of the DorsetPonds & Lakes Society (17yrs); Secretary ofSherborne Farmhouse Discussion Club(16yrs); Secretary to Flowers Farm Fly FishersClub (since 1977); Secretary to LeighDiscussion club (since 1984). Despite ill health Alan and Pam Vardycontinue to take care of each other atFlowers Farm, remaining active and verypopular members of the community.

SPOTLIGHT- Voices from the Vicarage

Valli Spencer-Moore

Valli Knust was born in April 1930 inHampstead, attending school in London untilwar broke out. Valli’s uncle had a very largehouse and he took her and her mother in,together with lots of other relatives. Theyalso had the Army billeted there. Valli told me “My cousins and I hadgovernesses but they were all beyond

“calling up” age and did their best, but werenot up to much. I had no qualificationswhen I left school, I had no brains! Myfather was an insurance broker, he diedwhen I was five. Noel Coward was a great friend of mymother’s and I recall sitting on the stairslistening to him. Another friend of mymother’s had a hat shop next to Claridges.I started there as a “run about” rising tomanageress. I became friends with a girlthere who was a niece of Dan Maskell. Herfather was rich and she wanted a businessso we started a little shop in Knightsbridgeselling clothes which we made in our workroom. One day she introduced me to a friendof her husband’s; he was a Russian prince –Stev Romanov, his father was an uncle ofTsar Nicholas II. Stev had been smuggledout of Russia by his nanny and then wentinto the wine trade. Rex Whistler was acustomer. We travelled to the South of Franceand I was 31 when we married. It was thesame day as the Duke & Duchess of Kent’smarriage. We lived in Kensington andwere married for 16 years. Stev died in 1974.

I returned to work making clothes formembers of the Royal family and film stars

– always on a one to one basis. I wasPremiere Vendeuse and manageress of theshow room. I remember Joan Collins was aclient. One day I was coming out of the Tubeat Knightsbridge and I met a man I hadn’tseen since I was 19. He was PatrickSpencer-Moore. We were married within ayear. He died in a motoring accident afterwe had been married about 12 years. I then moved to Dorset and lived witha cousin in Thornford. I also lived in LongStreet in Sherborne.” Valli certainly had some lovely tales totell and it was a pleasure spending time withher at the Vicarage.

Club NewsChetnole & Leigh Garden Club

The AGM of the Club took place at ChetnoleVillage Hall on Monday 4th October and wasattended by 43 of the membership eager tohear the annual reports and what awaitsthem in the coming year. Rosemary Burden remains as Chair ofthe Club as she enters her third and final yearof her tenure of this position. Ken Madgwickhas retired after eight years sterling serviceas Treasurer, with that portfolio being pickedup by Michelle Aldhouse. Mary Head, who,for the past four years, has arranged theannual programme of speakers and eventsso splendidly, has retired to the backbenches of the Committee, watching theactivity to replace her with great interest.The post remains unfilled at presentalthough a packed programme for thecoming year is already in place, thanks toMary. The membership can look forward,with anticipation, to interesting andentertaining presentations on subjectsranging from Pruning to Compost via theFlora and Fauna of South Africa’s WesternCape, growing Clematis, Japanese Gardens,Herbal Habitats for Wildlife and much morewith, of course, an array of social activitiesand trips.

The members were reminded of theopportunity to borrow various items ofequipment from the Club’s inventory: theseinclude a long handled pruner, a Henchmanplatform, a lawn scarifier and a gazebo. Due to ongoing pressure on the finances,largely because of the increasing cost andexpenses of speakers, the annualmembership of the Club will be raised to £10per person with effect from the start of thenew season on 1st November 2010. Theshock of this news was mitigated by thecopious amount of beautiful complimentaryfood and wine offered with the Committee’susual largesse! The first event of the Club’s new year isa direct reaction to a number of requestsfrom the membership for advice andinformation on pruning. Therefore, at 7.30on November 1st at Chetnole Village Hall, anexpert, Robert Allwood, has been booked togive an overview of this complex subject. Mr.Allwood has spent his working life immersedin horticulture, has managed his family’snursery and also ran the Plantsmen’s GardenCentre for Scott’s Nursery in Merriott,Somerset. He is indeed an expert on hissubject and his presentation is muchanticipated. As at most of the Garden Club’sevents, guests and visitors are very welcome.

Leigh & District Discussion Club The first of our winter meetings washeld on 5th October at Leigh Village Hall. Atalk was given by Mr Abrahams, headgardener of Minterne Magna Estate. Bornin Buckinghamshire, he was never verykeen on school, but loved the greatoutdoors. So much so that someone lefthim a garden in their will, for which helovingly cared for 20 years. Moving on to be head gardener atWindsor, he introduced the Foxtail Lilywhich was very fashionable in the 70’s. TheQueen was most fond of this lily and theywere often used to decorate statebanquets etc. His next move was to theSavill Gardens, again as head gardener.From Windsor he started his own businessin Derby as a landscape gardener, which hecontinued to do for 15 years. Deciding to have a break from work,he then travelled the world for 2 years;destinations being San Francisco in theStates, New Zealand and Australia where

he saw some wonderful crystal caves. Onreturning home he got a job at Stean ParkGarden for 2 years and from there toMinterne Magna Estate, where he hasbeen working ever since.

One of the jobs here was to renovatethe rhododendrons and on doing so hefound a very rare one. Also a ‘Living Fossil’was discovered, much to everyone’ssurprise and pleasure. Hopefully he willstay at Minterne to continue his marvellouswork. He was thanked by the Chairman,Charlie Osmond. After tea during businessthe following dates were given out:

Leigh WI At our meeting in September theCommittee really did us proud! We weretreated to a magnificent feast and after wehad had several helpings, we wereentertained by playing ‘BEETLE’. Somepeople never grow up, it was hilarious withlittle ‘sweetie’ bags as prizes. We are looking forward to our theatreouting next week at the Octagon to see ‘TheBoyfriend’. The next coffee morning will beat Liz Clarke’s home, Thornford House, HighStreet, Yetminster at 10.30am on November23rd – there will be a Bring & Buy Stall. TheWI Carol Service is in Sherborne Abbey onDecember 8th.

The Junior Wriggle Valley Players The Junior WriggleValley Players take tothe stage again. Butinstead of just 5 – 11year old we decidedat the beginning of

the summer to launch a teenage drama groupWe advertised locally with our own childrenpassing flyers out at local schools. On 12th September we arrived at thehall not sure if anyone would turn up – Youknow what teenagers can be like! Well wewere in for a surprise – we found ourselveswith a fantastic cast of 16 teenagers, a bandand the brilliant support of the Junior WriggleValley Players to present our firstShakespeare and our first teenage show! Our version of Romeo and Juliet is aromance and our story takes place in Londonin 2010, where two families the Capulet andthe Montague are in discord. In our show thedispute is racial tension due to the Capuletbeing of Hindu origin and the Montaguebeing of Western descent. This leads to manyfights and the Mayoress of London – playedby Katherine Priest tries to call for calm.

What both families had not bargainedfor was that Romeo Montague , played byMax Harding would fall in love with JulietCapulet, played by Hollie Heaton, leading tothe sad events that cost many their lives. In this play there is love, deceit, fighting,and death. It may be a sad tale but in modernBritain today it is played out similarly withsimilar consequences.

It is modern musical version with livemusic from the Popeye and the Pixies. I haveto say we have been very fortunate in ourcast and also all the support we have had. Wehave two choreographers, Lucy Parsons, andKate Hodgson, Clare Scott Underdown, whohas recently completed a cont’d overleaf

Tuesday Club Our October meeting started off insombre mood with our chairman PaulineHarley missing following her serious surgeryand the news of Stanley Waterfall’s death.Stanley had been a stalwart member of theclub for many years and will be greatlymissed not only by the Tuesday Club but byeveryone in Leigh. We hope that Paulinewill make a speedy and complete recoveryand will rejoin us soon. We then proceededto a much happier part of our meeting witha talk by Alison Charles on the butterfliesand flowers of Europe, ably assisted by herhusband Nigel on the slide projector. Over the past 20 years the two of themhave spent several weeks each yearscouring all parts of Europe for rarebutterflies and flowers. They have aparticular interest in orchids and we wereall stunned by the beauty and variety oftheir photos of many that we had neverheard of. In their travels they had also beenfortunate enough to see alpine meadows socovered with narcissi that they looked as ifthey were carpeted with snow, and muchthe same quantities of purple and whitecrocus. They had also captured on film anastonishing number of fritillary speciesincluding a most interesting group whichhad suffered some sort of genetic mutationand so were widely different from the normin both colour and markings. Mrs Charlesalso gave us some helpful hints on how totake photos of these generally fast movinginsects and she had even managed to getphotos of them settled on their hands. Wewere greatly cheered by the beautiful,colourful pictures after our sorrowful start. Next month our talk on the Dog’s Trustwill be the last of the year as December isdevoted to our Carol Concert and ChristmasParty. We always welcome new members.

degree in theatre studies and is currently ona gap year before going on to study dramaand Will Geeson, currently a year 8 studentat the Gryphon School who is doing oursound and lighting and is our musical liaisonbetween the band and the cast. Wriggle Valley Women’s Group

The opening evening of theWomen’s Group at Gable Court was atalk by Pearl Tuck on the trials andtribulations of raising money for herand her cousin to go to the Wall ofChina whilst on a mission to support St.Margaret’s Hospice. Many months laterafter going to frequent Car Boots, topacking bags in Supermarkets, tohaving a concert with the Yetties, totrying (and failing) to raise lots of cashat a really special dinner dance, and tobe given items which Dukes atDorchester auctioned, they have raisedthe amount needed.

Will they do it again? Well thatremains to be seen. The next meeting at ChetnoleVillage Hall (see advert) and will be atalk by Lorna Low who has a very specialfriend in Bethlehem and who has aclose connection with Palestine. Thismeeting is an open one; any one cancome, male or female and it may helpus to understand the difficulties of thatarea. Anne Flew

A big Chapeau to the winningensemble, The Leigh/Chetnole andHermitage group. The Cup is now back inthe Chetnole Pub. The Quiz was held at the White Hart.Thank you to the pub and CatherineFoster for organizing an eclectic quizwhich was won by the Yetminster team.

The Yetminster Boulers really enter intothe spirit of the competition. Come on Yetminster! You can do better than that. Theevent was well advertised in the WVMand there were plenty of childrenplaying rounders at the same time. TheTennis was unfortunately missing anumber of matches due to holidays andrain. Therefore I am consideringstretching the competition over the year.Winter for SMB and children's football,Golf in the Spring, Croquet,Tennis,Boules and Rounders through thesummer with the Quiz and prize giving inearly December.
