Welcome to the July 2011 edition of the

magazine.

I would like to begin by reminding

readers that there will be no magazine in

September to allow the Committee to take

their summer holidays; articles etc. to us by

14 July for Aug/September edition please.

Thank you to all those who responded

to the Reader Survey, inputs have now

been collated and these can be read on

page 39.

Our Competition winner was David

Fogden who receives a bottle of

Chardonnay. He correctly knew that the

stone plaque in last month’s cover photo

was on the outside wall of the Oak House

Stores. I bet you didn’t know that the shop was built as the 'church house' after secular

activities were banned in the church itself, and that at one time it was a school. Read

more in Nina Hayward's book "Yetminster and Beyond"; thank you to Linda Manaton for

that information.

The Committee hosted a hog roast event in Leigh Village

Hall to thank the small army of distributors who deliver your

magazine in all weathers. The event was a tremendous success.

There are lots of local events in the next few months so enjoy

being Out & About around our beautiful countryside.

Graham Plaice

The Wriggle Magazine is FREE but readers are invited to make voluntary donations towards the cost of production. These should be forwarded to the Treasurer at Mallows House, Church Street, Yetminster, DT9 6LG. Cheques can be made payable to Wriggle Valley Magazine.

Thank you for your continued support

News from the VillagesInter Village Competition 2011

Dear Readers,

This is the programme for this year’s Inter Village Competition, and it is in its eighth

year. For those of you who have just arrived, now is the time to participate. The competition is between Yetminster and Ryme Intrinseca against the combined villages of Leigh, Chetnole, Hermitage, Batcombe and Hilfield. It’s a bit of fun and you get the

chance to compete and talk to your neighbours.

For those of you who have been sitting on the fence, now is the time to ‘jump’.

All you have to do is telephone your village sporting Captain and join the fun.

PARENTS: Please encourage the young to come to the Rounders which is very popular and is followed by a great BBQ.

Any questions? Then, telephone me on 01935 873846 or email  [email protected]

“How green is our valley" -

Batcombe is fortunate in having a

plentiful amount of underground water

and has not suffered from the drought

as have other parts of the county.

We welcome to Batcombe Hill House,

General Andrew Graham, his wife Susie,

their four children, numerous dogs and

some horses; we hope their stay in

Batcombe will be a happy one.

We are sorry to hear that Tom

Williams has broken his ankle whilst

helping with the silage making, ‘Get

well soon Tom’.

The August/September issue of the

WVM will have details of the auction of

promises to be held at Leigh Village

Hall in the autumn, watch this space.

The monthly coffee mornings will be,

Wednesday 3 August at Marion Jeffries

and 7 September at Church Farmhouse,

both start at 11am.

Alan Bastone

BATCOMBE.....Local representative: Alan Bastone (01300) [email protected]

A very warm welcome to the village goes

to Alexandre & Gemma Perrin and son Jasper

at Distant Hills, Batcombe Road. We hope

you will be very happy in your new home.

Chetnole was so sorry to see the closure

of Wriggles Farm Shop in June but we do have

some good news about Chetnole’s bus service,

from our West Dorset district councillor

Margaret Lawrence – here is her update:

“From 24 July a new service will commence.

A Damory bus will be starting at Dorchester

from about 9.00am to Maiden Newton and

will work its way to Chetnole, through Leigh

on to Sherborne and Yeovil. Route not really

sorted yet but the good news is it will be 6

days a week. There will still be

a bus to Dorchester. Both buses will go to

Yeovil and Dorchester Hospitals as part of

their route.

As soon as I have a time table and more

news I will keep you posted”.

Margaret does stress that in order for this

service to survive it must be utilised regularly

so let’s all take the bus if and when we can.

Thank you Margaret and we look forward to

the publication of a timetable. The same

could be said for our Wednesday Post Office

too – if we don’t make the most of its services

they may not be there for us one day.

Wednesday  Grocery  delivery  from

Yetminster  -      Tracy from Yetminster PO

Stores is already delivering essential shopping

to the village hall for some individuals at the

same time as the Post Office on a Wednesday.

Phone Tracy at the shop before Wednesday

and place your order. collect it (or ask

someone to do it for you) from the village hall

between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Tel. 873477.

Village Whist Drive – if you help with this

event please check the duty rota and if you

are unable to help on your night please find a

replacement helper or contact Josie on

873571.

Linda Carroll sends this message, “THANK

YOU to the kind neighbour whoever you are

who hung my favourite lost belt on the field

gate where I found it when walking Beth on

Monday.”

Sue Morgan also sends many thanks “to

those generous folk who contributed to a

raffle hamper and supported us at Sherborne

Castle on Bank Holiday Monday. We took

£500 for SSAFA Forces Help.” Sue is also the

contact if you wish to take part in a

comprehensive four-hour certificated St

John’s Ambulance First Aid Course for anyone

over 15 years of age in the village hall – date

and time to suit. This will cover resuscitation

and emergency care to all age groups and will

cost £30 per head. Sue would be grateful to

hear soonest from anyone interested.

Probably but not definitely in August or

September, it depends on your availability.

Twelve takers needed. Contact Sue on

873104 or [email protected].

There have been at least three sightings

over the last two months of a black Labrador

roaming the village. It has been described as

slender and timid – it bolts when approached.

I myself have encountered it in the field

behind Lamb Plot before it ran off sharpish. It

has also been spotted in the Higher Farm area.

Let’s hope it has a loving home and just likes

a wander now and then however none of us

would like to think of it being in danger from

the traffic and we hope that its owner sees

this report.

Quick reminder to get your Chetnole

Flower  Show entries to the Show Secretary,

(Aly Kosowyk), Higher Orchard, Chetnole

before 8pm on Thursday 4 August and good

different classes to enter so come on

everyone and have some fun. The Flower

and is well worth a visit.

Hermitage Quiz – 14 May  2011

There were as many teams from outside

the village competing in the latest quiz -

from Chetnole, Leigh and Yetminster – as

there were from Hermitage and Hilfield but,

as Yogi Bear may have said , “it was déjà vu

all over again” with the same teams coming

1st and 2nd as has been the case in the last

two quizzes.

Thank you to everyone who took part

and congratulations to ‘Running in the

Family’ on their first place, and ‘well done’

to the ‘3 J’s +1’ in second place, and to the

‘Leighers’ on coming 3rd.

p.s.  Is  there  a  team  from  within

Hermitage  &  Hilfield  that  can  break  into

the top three at the November quiz ?

Ray Dickerson

On the 30 May (bank holiday Monday), I, and a large group of students from my 6th form at the Park School, Yeovil, participated in the Dragon Boat Racing at the Sherborne Castle Country Fair, in aid of the NSPCC.

We took part in a total of three races in one day, of which we won one. In total I raised, thanks to sponsors, £145, with the total raised by the team being considerably higher, estimated at over £1000. As such, I would like to thank all of the people in Hermitage who sponsored me for this event. The money that the 6th form

dragon boat team raised will go to people less fortunate that us.

LEIGH.....Local representatives: Anne & David Reason (01935) 873726 [email protected]

As the pair of cottages on the ‘Old Village Hall’ site near completion, it is fitting that we, the Village, can celebrate the fact that our ‘New Village Hall’ will be 100% paid for this month! It is testimony to the past and present committees for a fantastic job well done and for the self belief that it could be done. We, Leigh, are the envy of MANY villages throughout Dorset.

The summer holidays approach with much to-ing and fro-ing of families in and out of the village, so we wish you well, and also welcome Tony and Sarah Sutcliffe (+ three children) now moved into ‘The Olde Carpenter’s Arms’ – but they have not come far! As to our plea to be replaced as Leigh village reps – there has been a resounding silence! But we do mean it.

NOTES  FROM  THE  AGM MINUTES  OF

LEIGH PARISH COUNCIL

At the recent election there were

five unopposed candidates – Graham

Bugler, Graham Fudge, Brian Read, David

Vincent and Tom Withycombe.

Therefore Paul Orchard and Tim Holder

Paul Orchard Vice Chairman.

Councillor Withycombe had written

thanking all the volunteers for their help

with the village spring clean in April.

The Parish Council is still in

negotiation with Somerset & Dorset Air

Ambulance regarding the two recycling

bins. County Councillor Bevan spoke on

the non-gritting of roads and said that it

is critical that the Parish Council should

get the matter resolved before the

winter.

There is to be a public inquiry in

Leigh Village Hall in November regarding

an appeal against the decision of Dorset

CC to downgrade Longbridge and Bolters

Droves to footpaths.

A complaint had been received from

a resident regarding stones placed on

verges throughout the village and this

has been passed to Dorset CC to deal

with

News from the Old VicarageNews from the Old VicarageNews from the Old VicarageNews from the Old Vicarage“The best laid plans of mice and

men…” The first week of activities in June had to be unexpectedly postponed due the Home being closed to all but staff. A particularly nasty stomach virus meant that we had to try and contain the outbreak with barrier nursing techniques. The good news is that at the time of writing we seem to have it under control and hope to be back to normal visiting next week. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The rest of June is packed with activities and we are looking forward to tasting the best of West Country food. Honeybuns, Purbeck ice cream, Luscombe drinks, Evershot bakery, Fudges biscuits, Pinks organics, Hunts foods and the Dorset Blue company have all been extremely generous with providing us with samples of their wares and we look forward to enjoying their goodies!

We are planning a trip to Monkey World and look forward to welcoming the Guides and Brownies for a camp fire sing song. The Birds of Prey are returning, hopefully to fly the birds on the lawn and the miniature ponies are returning in early July.

Dates for your diary: The Bishop of Sherborne is joining us on Sunday 31 July. We are planning to celebrate this

with Songs of Praise followed by cream teas on the lawn at 3pm. All welcome!

Also on 14 August at 2pm we are holding a fun netball tournament raising funds for leukaemia research in memory of Tom Broadway. We do hope you will come and help us make this a special event and raise lots of money. There will be refreshments and a raffle and lots of dressing up! We raised the great total of £1340, after expenses, at the May Fair in

aid of St Andrew’s Leigh and as I said last month many many thanks to

all those who made this total possible.

Please put Sunday  31  July at 11am in your diaries when we are

holding the 5th Sunday Benefice Service in Leigh Village Hall – it is going

to be a coming together of all the parishes in a relaxed environment and

the Bishop of Sherborne will be in attendance.

RYME INTRINSECA.....Local representative: Gilly Wilson 01935 872982

Many thanks to the 15 good people t turned up for the annual churchyard tidy up. The noise of the power tools was deafening but in two hours the whole place was looking very neat. The major work on the hedges a couple of years ago is paying off now that we can keep them at a manageable height. Hopefully the snowdrops that have been planted on either side of the path ready for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, will multiply and be a real show in a few years.

There have been some changes in the village. It’s goodbye to Karen and Tom Walters who have been at Hill Cottage for 12 years. Karen has moved to Crewekerne and returned to nursing in Re-hab. Tom finished school and is very much hoping to join the Royal Air Force in Sept in the Aerial Photography Division. Good luck. Welcome to the new residents

in Hill Cottage Vicky Lester, her daughter Jo, her 3 year old daughter Freya and their Sheltie Cross dog “Boo”. They join us from North Oxfordshire and are keen on walking, gardening and music.

Friday, 3 June was the most beautiful sunny afternoon for Jean Meaden’s memorial service. Some 77 people attended the service, all pre-arranged by Jean, it was lovely and her ashes were scattered on the family grave. She so deserves peace at last but we will miss her very much..

The collection during the service was given to Mercy Ships (specially asked for by Jean). £250 was raised, which will be doubled to £500 by an anonymous U.K.donor.This will pay for 10 people to have life transforming surgery.

The opening of the

‘Ryme Intrinseca Book

Exchange’ on Saturday

4 June went very well with 26

people

joining us.

As always

we are

most

grateful for the

support of

Henry

Batten

who came

down to officially

open the library with a

lovely speech and to

‘cut the ribbon!’ Thank

you also to Tom Excell for keeping us safe by

slowing down the traffic!

The Book Exchange

was the idea of my

daughter, Laura May,

who wanted to do

something in memory of her brother and my son,

Carl. Laura, Carl and

their brother Oliver

were very close and

always looked out for

each other. Laura visited him every day

when he was diagnosed

with a devastating

neurological disease

which eventually took his life tragically early at

the age of twenty five.

As the journalist Patrick

Cockburn,

correspondent for the

Independent states in

his and his son’s newly published book “It is a

strange, frightening and

terrible illness that not

many people really

know or understand.”

Every time Carl had an attack more brain

cells were being

destroyed, making it

harder and harder each

time to recover. In spite

of this, he was

determined not to let it

get in the way of his studies. He achieved

three degrees: a

Masters in Chemistry

with industrial

experiences and Post

Graduate Masters in

both Biological Chemistry and in

Mathematical Biology

and Biophysical

Chemistry. Just two

weeks before he died he

had a paper published in British Medical

Journal; his

commitment to his field

of Chemical Biology was

outstanding

He was always

helping others with his warm caring courteous

personality. As the Vice –

Chancellor of Warwick

said “Carl made an

important contribution

to a key part of the

University he was a

hugely valued member

of Warwick’s

community.” He did not

complete his PhD in medical research, but

his ideas have been

carried through with

good results. Warwick

University has set up a

Scholarship in Carl’s

name and placed a beautiful bench in his

memory outside the

department where Carl

worked.

Carl would feel proud

of his sister’s idea of converting the phone

box to a library as he

always had a book on

the go and lending out

his books to fellow

students, encouraging

friends to read more and explore some of our

great classics.

An extremely big

thank every one who

helped get the

telephone box ready for

it’s new adventure as

YETMINSTER.....Local representative: Graham Plaice (01935) 872044 [email protected]

I would like to start with a plea for all residents to support the forthcoming Yetminster Fair, being held on Sat 9 Jul. Rev. Simon is in full swing trying to organise a Community Support Group; all those interested in finding out more about this important community role are requested to contact him.

I would like to finish my introduction by requesting the support of residents for our local businesses, the old phrase of use it or lose it has never been so true. Graham Plaice

A Rather Strange Request!I came across your publication whilst

trying to track down a long lost relative and

as a rather long shot I thought I would write

and ask for your help.

I have recently discovered the existence

of an aunt and her last known address in

1984 was in Coles Lane Yetminster. She was

called Anne Wallace and lived at ' Wallaces'

in Coles Lane. I wondered whether she

might still be alive- though she would be

very elderly now, or whether there is any

one still in the village who knows/knew her.

I would love to be able to find out more and

wondered whether you might put a small

paragraph in an forthcoming edition asking

for any information? Or if you know of any

other way to get this information? e.g. your

local post office?

Sorry if it seems a strange request, if

nothing else at least I have discovered the

existence of Yetminster! Wendy Cliffe

Yetminster Playgroup

Yetminster Church Hall is where I

first went

To Yetminster Playgroup on a

morning I spent.

I am afraid to say that I was one

Of the first class at Yetminster in

seventy one!

Over two decades pass by and the

year is ninety seven

My eldest son Luke starts pre-

school – good heavens!

A member of the committee I then

became

Fund raising and fund raising was

the name of the game!

Craig followed suit in the year

ninety nine

Then after two more years it was

now time

As still one to follow and her name

was Kim

As all three of my children through

pre-school have been.

For Kim’s two years spent in the

pre-school cabin

I was made chairman as it would

happen

Ofsted, policies, staffing, and those

wretched targets

But what great fun we all had - I

have no regrets!

So, thank you to all the staff and

committees who over the years

Have put in the time, blood, sweat

and tears.

Let’s hope it continues for many

more years to come

And perhaps my grandchildren will

have the same great fun!!

1.e The overall reader’s opinion of

the magazine was as follows;

Excellent Very Good Good Fair

45% 40% 13% 2%

Comment: overall satisfied but

room for improvement.

2. What people most like about the

magazine was the high content of

local news and events.

Comment: no plan to change this.

3. What people least like about the

magazine is as follows;

Advertisements should be separate

from the village news pages.

It appears to some that the

magazine is overcrowded coupled

with too many advertisements.

Occasional minor mistakes.

Comment: There is a fine line to

balance with regard to

advertisements (which pay for the

production of the magazine and thus

keep the magazine FREE to you) and

articles. The committee are very

conscious of this issue and we strive

to keep the number of

advertisements to a minimum to

cover costs.

The change of Editor and Printer

occurred at the same time, and both

are taking a little time to settle in,

both do a tremendous job, but it was

inevitable that the Editorial

appearance of the magazine would

be different. We all strive to

eliminate errors, however,

sometimes we do fail, please accept

our apologies it is not intentional.

4. The majority of readers did not

support the inclusion of a children’s

section, but wholeheartedly

supported a competition, health and

cookery section.

Comment: We will revisit the

children’s section at a later date.

The Editor will try to include, on a monthly basis, either a competition,

health or cookery article.

5. The geographical coverage for

the magazine was thought to be

correct.

Comment: no change.

6. The response to holding previous

copies and information on a website

was supported.

Comment: the committee is forging

ahead with this issue, however, we

need to be careful with the Data

work to still be undertaken.

7. Overall: It was good to see that

everybody wanted the magazine to

continue. All the comments

contained in the reader survey

responses will be considered and

Over 100 people came

to the 40th birthday of

the Wriggle Valley Pre-

School which was a

celebration of laughter

and catching up with old

friends. Many ex-staff

attended who had passed

through the school over

the years. There were

photos from the old

albums to peer at and

faces to remember. Mrs.

Pat Smith who founded

the Pre-school in

February 1971 came and

was happy to reminisce

over her memories.

The well known

children’s author

Babette Cole, opened the

event and handed out

prizes. Alice Procter and

Taylor Hendy won the

“name the fish”

competition for

“Wriggles”. Babette

entertained not only the

children but also many of

the adults with her

wonderful rendition of

one of her books, Dr.

Dog, which was much

appreciated by all. Even

the Headteacher, Paul

Miller, admitted that he

was a lifelong fan and

could be seen listening

with rapt attention in

the audience!

Over £450 was

raised on the night and

many thanks to so many

of the wonderful local

businesses in and around

Sherborne for their

support.

Once again Dorset did

very well in last year's Ride

This year's sponsored event

will be on Saturday 10

September - ride or walk to

as many churches as you

our beautiful countryside,

usually on a lovely day, and,

what's more, split the

Thank YouSome of you may be

surprised to learn that there are almost 70 volunteers in the Wriggle Valley catchment area, who deliver about 1260 copies of every issue of the WVM by hand, to your letterbox. Many of these unsung heroes have done so for years.

The management committee felt it was time to recognise their efforts and to say "Thank You" on your behalf. So on May 20th, all the volunteers and their respective partners were invited to a WVM Hog Roast at Leigh Village Hall. About 88 attended and were given a welcome by our Chairman, Graham Plaice, accompanied by

a rolling presentation on the big screen prepared by Editor Bella. This was topped off by delicious

food provided and cooked by Hamish Pork of Netherton Farm. Guests could browse through the very earliest magazine issues on display, as they met

their counterparts from all the other villages, some for the very first time. All were amazed

to realise that so many people give up their time to ensure you receive your copy of the WVM, come rain or come shine. Long may it last!

A new space for creativity has

emerged in the Dorset countryside. The

Studio at White Hart is reviving a method

of drawing study that was developed

over 600 years ago. This method of

teaching follows the Atelier approach

which Rembrandt and several other

masters studied. This classical approach

teaches students how to visualize and

render the subjects of their drawings

accurately: to draw realistically, the artist

becomes an illusionist by making an

object drawn on a two-dimensional

surface appear three-dimensional.

The instructor, Katy Cox, was trained

at the Lafayette Atelier located in

Lafayette, Indiana, USA under James

Werner who was classically trained in

Florence, Italy. Katy earned a degree in

Art Education from Purdue University,

one of America’s great universities. “I

have really enjoyed watching the

students grow and become bolder behind

their easels. The sessions fly by with such

a keen group. Everyone is working on

their own projects at their own pace. I

think that is one of the most appealing

aspects.”

Student sessions started in December

of 2010 have been growing steadily.

Young to old, experienced to beginners

have all embraced and benefited from

the instruction. The class is more than

just a programme, it not only instils

confidence in the students’ ability to

draw; it also broadens their awareness of

the beauty around them every day. One

student professed, “I am now planning

my life to make time to draw.”

With the hectic lifestyles of today, The

Studio, which is set with a stunning

countryside backdrop, offers a relaxing

and inspirational space with class times

to suit .

Anyone interested in starting drawing

or further refining their skills should visit

during the open evening on Monday,

11 July from 5 – 9 pm. There will be an

opportunity to meet current students

and view their work. Katy will be

available to answer questions and give a

brief overview of the programmes.

Refreshments will be available.

The Studio is located at White Hart

Lodge, Holnest near Sherborne Dorset

DT9 6HA. For additional assistance, Katy

can be reached on 07891 031 905.

St Andrew’s is a good school’. Yes, we all know it, but it is still very pleasing to read it in our latest Ofsted report. We were inspected at the beginning of May by a thorough and professional team and emerged successful and invigorated to continue our excellent work. The report has been published and is available in full on our website.

Ofsted recognised that pupils’ welfare is at the heart of our caring approach. This ensures our children feel safe and happy and therefore are in the perfect place to get the most out of school life. We build our school to help our pupils’ become well-rounded young people who then develop their talents to the full.

Furthermore, the inspectors agreed that our curriculum is ‘very well organised and has been exceptionally well tailored’ so that our children and consistently motivated and engaged.

I was most pleased with the letter addressed to our children by the Ofsted team. ‘You work hard and make good progress’ they wrote

about our pupils. Also they ‘are friendly, polite and helpful’ with ‘an enthusiasm for learning’.

The diocesan inspection which followed soon after said that St Andrew’s school, through its distinctive Christian character, is outstanding at meeting the needs of all learners. It doesn’t get better than that!

School is only a school with children in it. Without our parents continued support in sending their children to St Andrew’s we wouldn’t exist.

Thank you to all of our parents for choosing and trusting St Andrew’s with your child’s care and education.

News from our ChurchesCelebrating the best with the Bishop of Sherborne, 31 July

There’s so much to

celebrate in the life

of our six parishes,

that we’ve decided to

bring them all together on

31 July for a day of

celebration. The Bishop of

Sherborne, Rt Rev. Dr

Graham Kings will be with

us to mark the day with

services at St. Andrew’s,

Yetminster, Leigh Village

Hall, and the Old Vicarage in

Leigh.

The Wriggle Valley plays

an important part in the life

of our Bishop. He writes:

“I come to the Wriggle

Valley once a month for a

quiet day at Hilfield Friary,

which I call the ‘lungs of the

diocese’ and have greatly

enjoyed walking to Batcombe’

It will not be his first visit

to us, last year he preached at

the Harvest festival in Ryme

Intrinseca. On this visit he is

looking forward to seeing

more of the life of the

Benefice with visits to

Yetminster and Leigh. Each

of our parishes will be bring

something of what they feel

they do best to the day,

whether that’s music, flower

arranging, children’s work,

hospitality, pastoral care, or

nature conservation, it will

find a place in the

programme!

The Bishop has made a

particular request to visit the

Old Vicarage where his

mentor and teacher at

Cambridge, Professor C.F.D

Moule spent the autumn

years of his life.

‘I know he was

wonderfully cared for and

much loved by the devoted

staff of the Old vicarage and

would like to visit this very

special place’

The Old Vicarage will be

holding a lunch party for the

Bishop followed by a ‘Songs

of Praise’ for the residents.

We would love as many

people as possible to join

with the Bishop in

celebrating all that is best in

the life of the Benefice. The

programme for the day will

begin with a celebration of

Holy Communion from the

Book of Common Prayer at

8.30 am in St. Andrew’s,

Yetminster followed by a

Parish breakfast in St.

Andrew’s hall.

At 11.00 am all the

parishes will gather at the

village Hall in Leigh

bringing with them

something to share of the

life of their parish.

At 12.30 pm the Old

Vicarage will be hosting a

reception for the Bishop

followed by ‘Songs of Praise’

in the gardens.

We look forward to this

day and pray with the Bishop

that “God will meet with us

all and renew us”

Yetminster Methodist Church

Recently, I have been looking through some old photographs and newspaper cuttings. Apart from having a good laugh about how we looked 40 – 50 years ago and the clothes we wore then, our main comment was, “How things have changed!”

When we seriously look back we can see some vast changes – in the world as a whole; in our country; our towns; our village and certainly in our families and ourselves. Unfortunately many of the changes are not for the better. Then we start to express our opinion about where and when things went wrong and more especially who are to blame. The various Governments through the years get most of the blame, followed by the Councils, whilst we, of course, are blameless.

We can see vast changes in our churches too, and naturally it’s always the vicars or the ministers who get the blame. However, we have to admit that change is inevitable and much of it is essential and beneficial if we are really doing what God has called us to do. We must not get stuck in a “time-warp” – we must accept that our churches are not intended to be spiritual museums housing the relics and methods of bygone years – no matter how good they were in their day. It is foolish to try and keep things as once we knew them and we must constantly be looking at new ways of spreading the gospel. In our denomination, I am sure if John Wesley was living here today, he would not be riding around on horseback, nor would he be preaching for two hours non stop. Even Jesus would find some modern form of transport to carry out his ministry.

We are relieved that even in a world where “Change and decay in all around I see” (as the hymn- writer puts it), many scriptural promises give us encouragement and confidence for the future, just two: “I am the Lord – I change not.” (Mal.3 v 6) and

“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Heb13 v 8).“We praise Him for all that is past and trust Him

for all that’s to come”. (Joseph Hart). Cliff Harris.

May 2011

“I love spring anywhere,

but if I could choose I would

always greet it in a garden.” Ruth Stout

Winter was forgotten when

flowers and tree blossom appeared in

profusion - and so much earlier than

usual. This was a particularly

encouraging spring for gardeners - but

farmers might not agree.

Temperatures

May was a pleasant month, but

top temperatures generally fell short of

April’s. The warmest day was only 23.3

C (74 F) - 11% below normal - but there

were no frosts and the coldest night

only sank to 0.9 C/34 F, well above

2001-10’s usual -0.4 C (31 F). This meant

that the average temperature was 5%

higher than normal, at 12.7 C (55 F).

Rainfall

The 2011 drought continued

throughout May. There were 24 rain

free days instead of the usual 18 and

total rainfall was only 38 mm/1.5”. This

was 44% less than normal. Most of the

month’s rain fell on May 7, when we

recorded 25.4 mm (1”). Total 2011

rainfall by the end of May was 308 mm

(8.2”), or a ground-parching 40%

below average.

Sunshine

Despite

the longer

days, May

had 50

fewer hours

of sunshine

than April.

Even so, the

total of 144

was 8% up

on last May,

and the year to date total for 2011 is

now 19% above normal, making this the

third sunniest spring of the past ten years.

For the period January-May, there has

been measurable sunshine for 30% of the

total daylight hours, well up on the usual

average of only 25%.

Pressure and wind speeds

The barometric pressure in May

(1020 mb) was very close to the usual

level. This gave calm, settled weather.

Even the windiest day saw a peak

wind speed of only 29 mph, 19% below

the usual May maximum of 36 mph.

Unlike earlier months, when winds

often blew from unexpected

directions, they reverted to the South

or Southwest, but without the rainfall

that so often spoils holidays but helps

grass and crops to grow.

The Green Oasis

…gone gardening…

A garden big or small evolves with your

lifestyle. Flicking through the latest

gardening magazines, low whitewashed

walls, tiled terraces and intermittent areas

of hardwood decking linked with

architectural planting seem to be trendy.

Where existing materials and architecture

allow then this style can be really very

striking and attractive. A keen sense of place

and a sympathetic approach is essential

though. June and July are wonderful months

in the garden and inspiration is running high

in the aftermath of Chelsea and leading up

to Hampton Court and the other big shows. I

wonder if you realise that most of the points

available for the show gardens are awarded

for the selection of plants!

In my garden, outside my kitchen door I

have a formal vegetable garden complete

with tomatoes, onions, lettuces, beans and a

good selection of culinary herbs. It pleases

me so very much to go outside and choose

fresh vegetables for the table and any

special dish I may be creating in the kitchen.

As it is just

outside the

back door my

hoe is always

at the ready

and weeds do

not stand a

chance!

In my sunny border I have planted

lavender en-masse with white roses.

Lavender Hidcote or Munsted are lovely

varieties to use. This planting arrangement is

traditional and given the dry spell which we

have been experiencing they look amazing.

Bearded irises rub shoulders with the last of

my oriental poppies and the fresh fragrant

blousy heads of paeonies need propping up

to avoid snapping. I have lost both my Cistus

and my Penstemon during the cold winter.

Cistus creticus is a particular favourite and

flowers profusely. Penstemons are good

plants and add so many different colours

over several months peaking in most cases

at the end of August. Perhaps I will replace

my lost treasures in the autumn but for the

time being I will fill my gaps with annuals.

Geraniums pink and blue flower endlessly as

does the smaller Geranium sanguineum dark

magenta and also white. White within an

arrangement really adds dynamics to any

border. The silvery grey foliage of Cynara

cardunculus (cardoon) sits majestically at the

back and is thrusting forth a huge purple

thistle head. Next to it Crambe cordifolia is

developing rapidly and will soon be a huge

cloud of tiny white flowers.

Happy Gardening!

SPOTLIGHT on our communityThe Three Wandering Women of ChetnoleAt this time of year there is a lot to

see in the countryside; birds busy with

their young, lambs, calves and some

beautiful flowers. Also making an

appearance in our fields at this time of

year are the three wandering women

of Chetnole.

You may have spotted them about,

two are of average height (Eileen and

Julie) and the third (Tracey, me) is

much shorter. They tend to wear large

boots, carry rucksacks and use walking

sticks (although Eileen is always leaving

hers at the top of a hill and only

discovers this when we are at the

bottom!).

We can generally be spotted on a

Thursday evening but this can change

occasionally due to our children’s busy

social calendars or whatever aches

and pains have befallen us that

particular week, especially if we have

been Zumba dancing on the Monday

(another article I think!)

I’m not quite sure how it all started

but we have been walking every week

now for about four years and tend to

walk between 4 – 8 miles. Coming from

London I’m not sure I appreciated this

gentle passtime to start with and only

agreed to go along as I saw it as a

good opportunity for a chat.

Many a Thursday evening, when

putting on my boots I would have given

anything to swap them for a pair of

high heels, a row of shops and a Costa

coffee. But the thing I found most

unnerving when we started walking

was that I was occasionally requested

to stop talking as I might disturb the

deer grazing in the field, or not hear the

unusual bird call! It didn’t seem to

matter if I was right in the middle of the

most interesting of discussions!

With a lot of perseverance and

thanks to my two walking companions I

have come to appreciate the beautiful

area in which I live and all it has to offer.

Eileen,being a farmer’s daughter,

can point out all the different species

of birds we see; she is also able to tell

the difference between a fox’s den

and a badger set, just by the size of the

hole and how it is dug out, truly

amazing by my standards.

I have nicknamed my other walking

companion, Julie ‘Eveready’ as

thankfully she is always ready with an

ordnance survey map (I find the fact

that she can actually understand it

quite amazing) and just when we think

we are lost she puts us back on the

right path. She is the voice of reason

when in the middle of a field and being

chased by cows. She also carries

everything you might need while out

walking: plasters, phone, torch, thermal

blanket, whistle, cuddly toy, etc etc.

Eileen and Julie will update you in

later issues on some of the routes we

have taken and the interesting things

we have seen. I just hope Eileen

mentions the time she got stuck in the

hedge! Oh what fun we had…

We are very proud to announce

our new panto to be performed at

Red Riding Hood by Norman

Robbins is a twist on the traditional

entertaining and family fun panto.

Norman mixes the traditional

elements of a panto with his own

“wacky style” to provide a script that

is “both hilarious and imaginative

with plenty of opportunities for cast

Kirsty Andrews has agreed to direct;

she, with James Gaylard, directed

Jim directing in the Curse of the Turtle’s Head

Wriggle Valley Women’s GroupOur speaker for May was Judith Green,

who along with her husband runs “Somerset

Lavender” in Faulkland near Bath. For years

they were diary farmers, but when diary

farming became unsustainable in the late

nineties it was clear they had to earn a living

some other way! After much thought a

member of the family said “How about

growing lavender”? Judith’s husband went

straight outside and ploughed up five acres,

so there was no going back!

It was a tremendous learning curve for

them of course and they sought professional

advice. It took five years of planning and

hard work before they could open to the

public. They now grow up to twenty

varieties of lavender. The groups they

specialise in are Early English, French, or

Stolchas and hybrids. They are open to the

public between May and September.

Judith then told us about the best

conditions for growing and the correct way

to prune etc. She brought with her some

lavender plants for sale and samples of the

lavender products e.g. Pot-pourrie, lavender

sachets, hand cream and pure essential oils,

which she distils on the farm drop by drop!

It was a fascinating talk and one has to

admire people who turn their lives around

successfully after difficult times.

There will be a WVWG planning meeting

on 19 July at Bower Court at 7.30p.m.

Yetminster and Ryme Garden,

Art and Craft SocietyI think I have just been to heaven and

back! On 14 June, 34 members of the

Yetminster and Ryme Garden Society visited

the glorious RHS gardens of Rosemoor, in

Devon. The original eight acre garden was

donated to the RHS by Lady Anne Berry in

1988 together with a further 32 acres of

pastureland. The area that is now set out as

the formal gardens was planted up as

recently as 1990 but with their usual

nurturing hand, the RHS has created a jewel

that implies something much more mature.

Every individual area is meticulously and

thoughtfully planted, providing a feast of

inspiration no matter what size of garden we

each have. The sheer delight of wandering

through the seven formal gardens, then on to

the wild flower meadows, to the lake and

then through to the original gardens which

surround Lady Anne Berry’s house with their

magnolias, flowering cornus and huge,

beautiful, very old trees, provided a full day

of perfect delight and tranquillity and for me,

every bit as restorative as a weekend away.

It helped that it was the perfect June day.

The sun shone and everything looked lush,

fresh and green. We couldn’t have had a

better day.

So glorious and skilful is the planting that

it made me want to rush home and dig

everything up and start again, recreating a

mini Rosemoor outside my back door. I want

to plant three Betula in the middle of the

lawn just like they have and I want my

borders to have that same flamboyant

brilliance and my lawn to curve in that

enticing way and to look like a velvet carpet.

Then I console myself by realising they have a

team of dedicated helpers working full time

for our enjoyment, so it’s easy for them and I

doubt I will ever achieve such perfection. I

think visiting Rosemoor is the next best thing!

The July meeting will be a drinks party

and summer picnic and details will be

circulated to members shortly.

Schedules and application forms for the

Summer Show on 20 August are now

available in the Oak House Stores and Jolin

Gallery. Please note the closing date for all

entries is Friday 12 August.

The 2010 cricket season turned out

to be one of the best seasons ever for

the Chetnole Cricket Club. The club had

a very successful season playing in the

Readers Mid Wessex Cricket League

Division One.  Blessed with some very

good young players the results were

much better than we would have hoped

for, at the beginning of the season.

The Club has seen many changes

over the years and that trend we can

expect to continue.

There have been many players and

numerous changes in the clubs fortune in

its history. It is also hoped that quite

soon we shall be able to carry-out the

planned modest improvements to the

pavilion adding again to the special

character of the Village Cricket.

Sunday 29 May 2011

Chetnole made a very shaky start to

their friendly home match with Cerne

Abbas losing early wickets quickly when

batting first. However Stan Kemp made

a very nice 49 to rescue the situation.

Also two new local players playing

for Chetnole for the first time made a

major contribution, Dave Horton scoring

18 and Phil Pritchard 15. Ed Clark made a

good 21 and Chetnole ended the innings

130 all out.

T Best for Cerne Abbas finished

with bowling figures of 5-25. Cerne

Abbas did eventually prove a little too

strong for Chetnole winning by 2 wkts.

Luke Wills had a good bowling spell 3-27

for Chetnole - an enjoyable match.

Chetnole Cricket Club

Chetnole Chuckers Boules ClubThe Club is currently arranging its

annual internal Club Championships.

These will be simple knock-out

competitions in the following

categories:

Ladies' Singles

Men's Singles

Mixed Pairs

The planning of

friendly matches

against local teams

is also now under

way. Club

members will be notified by email of

these forthcoming events.

A Juniors’ Day is to be held again

this year on Tuesday 2 August,

starting at 10:00 am. This is an ideal

opportunity for the younger

members of our community to try

the sport and have a friendly game

or two amongst themselves. Club

committee members will be

organising the event and refereeing

the games. There will be modest

prizes for the winners. The number

of pistes to be used and the

composition of the teams will be

decided on the day, depending on

the number and ages of those

playing. In previous years this has

been a very enjoyable and fun

occasion. For further details, or to

register an interest, please contact

Gordon Ratcliffe, on 01935 872996.

Hermitage & HilfieldAt our June meeting, our speaker was

June White, who came to tell us about the

Homestart Charity.

This is an organization which supports

parents, peopled by volunteers, to enable

them to give their children the best

possible start in life. Princess Alexandra is

their patron.

Families can be referred by various

agencies, including doctors and social

workers, or can refer themselves.

There is a 10 week training, which June

has undergone, and we wish her well in

her future caring role.

Our next meeting is a visit to

‘Honeybuns’ on 5 July.

Christine Dickerson

LeighAt our May meeting Rob Curtis came to

speak to us on ‘Smuggling in Dorset’ – he

had kindly stepped in at the last minute as

our booked speaker could not come. He

gave us an interesting history of smuggling

and said how the beaches in Dorset were

perfect for smuggling and at one time 70%

of the local population was involved in

some way or other. In 1690 the Revenue

Service was founded and although in 1702

the taxes on smuggling rose, this did not

seem to stop it happening! By 1825 the

Customs service was better organized and

in 1831 the Government authorized the

Royal Navy and the Coastguard Service to

become involved and smuggling became

less lucrative. Rob’s second part of his talk

was on how a typical smuggling operation

worked – they were a determined bunch

and he told us some amusing stories.

Our meeting on 26 July is “Bed  and

Breakfast – the other side”. Do join us; we

have had several new members join lately

which is great.

Chetnole Art GroupNew members are invited to apply for classes starting  in

September. We are an established private art group meeting Tuesday

mornings in the Village Hall with a resident tutor.

We can cater for students of all abilities from the complete beginner to the more advanced. We work in the media of our choice and there is the opportunity to do a lot of independent

work alongside the drawing and painting tutorials. Peter Lightfoot has been

our tutor for three years and does a lot of one to one work with students. We exhibit our work each year.

If you are interested and would like more information, please contact me. These classes are very popular so apply early!

Late May and June was an

extremely busy and enjoyable period

for garden club members. We took a

little trip – three days – touring some

of the leading gardens in Sussex and

Kent.

Sissinghurst,

Great Dixter,

Wakehurst

Place and

Chartwell all

experienced

the

penetrating

gaze and

questioning

mind of the

Chetnole &

Leigh Garden

Club

membership.

Our sincerest

thanks to

Ken and Shirley Madgwick for

arranging such a magical tour; their

fourth in as many years. They say it

will be their last ….. we’ll see!

The Club then celebrated its 25th

Anniversary on 6 June with an excellent

dinner in Leigh Village Hall. The meal

was followed by entertainment with

one of the quirky quizzes run by Ray

and Christine Dickerson who had just

arrived back from Paris. It was hugely

enjoyed by all those present. Then

ensued an adapted version of the TV

favourite, “Call my Bluff “with Blair

Sibun, John Tuke and your

correspondent testing the gullibility of

the audience via a series of outrageous

definitions of unfamiliar words – not all

linked to horticulture. The game was

chaired with admirable patience by a

very tolerant Janet Wood and the

evening ended with lots of smiles and

laughs. Can’t wait for the 50th!

June sees the local Open Gardens

event. Alternating with Chetnole every

year, Leigh stepped up this year, and,

with a record 11 garden loving owners

offering their charges to public view in

aid of the charity Headway (the

association for the brain injured),

great hopes

abounded of

raising a

healthy sum.

In fact, I

write this

sitting in my

garage

entrance,

trying to keep

dry and warm

to welcome

visitors to our

garden – one

of the eleven

open. Today

is 12 June !

The day when

dawn heralded a less than perfect day;

lowering dark rain-laden clouds driven

by a cold, gusty wind is producing

increasingly heavy rain. And

proceeding to worsen. Notwithstanding,

people have donned their wellies and

wet-suits to combat the elements and

are attempting to defy the weather

Gods! I suspect the Gods will win in

the end but it’s good to see the

Dunkirk spirit is still around. Sadly,

however, it’s likely the sum raised will

fall far short of that raised in Leigh two

years ago when it was well over £1000

Never mind: we must remember that it

is midsummer, so things are perfectly

normal.

The Club’s next event is the

Summer Garden Party. It will take

place on 4 July in a Chetnole

member’s garden. This is always a

great event; let’s hope the weather

gods are in better humour than today.
