canalsoapplytothepeopleinthesameroom.Wetalkoncellphones,blareiPods,andanumberofotherannoyinghabits,likebangingawayonakeyboard.Ifthisistheamountofattentionwepaytothepersonsittingnexttous,howoftendoweconsiderthepeopleontheothersideoftheworld?Weseemedtobe

concernedwhenthesepeoplearefacingsometypeofdisasterortragicevent.Americansspendmostoftheirday-to-day

livesthinkingofthemselves.Weyellattheother“dumb”driversontheroadbecauseweleftthehouselate.Wearealwaysconcernedaboutthebestchoiceforuswithlittletonothoughtabouthowitwouldaffectsomeoneelse.Weevensaythatifsomeoneisgoingtocometothiscountry,heorsheshouldlearntospeak“American”first.Sohowwillwereactwhen41studentstravel

toLivingston,AlabamatocompletetheirdualdegreesatUWA?Thismaynotseemlikealifechangingevent

forus,butforthe41travelingstudents,itwillbe.ThesestudentsgrewupandcurrentlyliveinChina.Ofthese41spotsavailable,34studentshavecurrentlybeenconfirmed.Atthispoint,UWAwillhost12youngmenand22youngwomenranginginagefrom17–23inthecom-ingfallsemester.Theyhaveappliedandbeenselectedto

participateinanexchangeprogrambetweenUWAandGuangdongUniversityofFinance(GUDF).AllofthestudentstravellingtoUWAwillbe

housedinHooverApartmentsPhase2,whichiscurrentlyunderconstruction.Whenthestudents

arrivetheywillhavecompletedtwoyearsofcollegeatGDUF,includingacourseinEnglish,andwhentheysuccessfullycompletethepro-gramtheywillgraduatewithdualdegreesfromGDUFandUWA.“WhereisGuangdongUniversity?”Theobvi-

ousanswerisChina,otherwiseknownbythepropernameofPeople’sRepublicofChina.Thecountryisdividedinto23provinces;theseareasarecomparabletoour50states.Buttobemorespecific,theuniversityis

timewithfriends.Oh,andIcannotforgetwant-ingagreatdressandahotdate.Unfortunate-ly,mypromandnoneoftheseingredientsofthat.Myfirstyear,Iwentsolo

andhadtobehomeateleven-acur-fewthatIdidnotobey-butafterprom,IwishedIcouldhavehadonelastchancetogetitright.Iwantedmydatetobemyhighschoolcrush,andIwantedthemostbeautifuldress,butenoughaboutme.Recently,TheUniversityofWestAla-

bamahelditsLastChanceProm.TheCampusActivityBoardmembersde-cidedtheywantedtotrysomethingfresh.

JasonGardner,theDirectorofStudentActivities,saidthatalotofhardworkandresearchwentintoputtingthispromtogether.Heexplainedhowhe,alongwiththeCampusActivityBoardmem-bers,cameupwiththisidea:“Well,theCampusActivityBoardmemberswantedtotrysomethingnew,andaftermuchresearch,wefoundthatTheLastChancePromwasverypopular.Wefiguredthatitwouldbesomethingfuntotry.”ThePromhadover100studentsinattendance.Themusicwasgreat,thefoodwasgreat,andthemoodwasjustright.UWAstudentDexterMcDonaldsaid,

“Ireallyenjoyedit;”McDonaldsaid,“Ienjoyedthesnacks,andIlikedthefactthatpeopleactuallydressedup!”WillthisbethelastpromatUWA?“No,thisissomethingthateveryoneenjoyed,”Gard-nersaid,“wehadagoodturnoutforthefirsttime,andthisissomethingthatwanttocontinue.”Ifyoumissedthepromthefirsttime,keepyoureyesandearsopenforthenextLastChancePromandotherexcitingeventssponsoredbyCAB.

PreviewDaywasheldonSaturday,March19.ThiseventwassponsoredbytheUWAOfficeofAdmis-sions.Onehundredfiftyhighschooljuniorsand

seniorsweresigneduptoat-tend.StudentswereinformedaboutPreviewDaythroughmailedinvitations,alinktosignupontheUWAwebsite,andagroupcreatedonFa-cebook.DuringPreviewDaythesestudentsandtheirfami-lieshadachancetoexploreUWA,learnabouttheuniver-sity,andtakeatourofthecampus.Theyalsohadthechancetomeetandinteractwithprofessorsandcurrentstudents,tolearnaboutschol-arshipsandfinancialaid,andtogettoknowGreeksandothercampusorganizations.PreviewDayisagreatwayto

Recently,theUniversity’sStudentSup-portServicestookaculturalfieldtripto

Selma,Ala.,totakepartinthereen-actmentoftheMarchonMont-gomery.ThistripwasanopportunitytoextendBlackHis-toryMonth.TheBridgeCrossingJubilee,aweeklongfestivalthat

commemoratesavitalmomentintheCivilRightsMovement,ishostedbySelmaeveryyear.TheSelmatoMontgom-erymarchactuallyconsistedofthreemarches.Twoofthesemarchesfailed,duetotheharassmentofprotestorsandmarchers.SelmawasattheheartoftheCivilRightsMovement,andBloodySundayandtheSelmatoMontgomeryMarcharebothrememberedduringthisfestival.ThankstothestaffofStudentSupportServices,thestudentswereabletopartakeandexperiencesuchagreatandhistoricalevent.StudentSupportServices’counselor

AndreaFarquharsaidstudentsgatheredwiththecrowdoutsideBrownChapelAMEChurch,wherethereisamemo-rialtoDr.MartinLutherKing.“Themarch

starteddownMLKBoulevardandturnedrightandheadedfordowntownSelma.Somemarcherssangprotestsongs,somewavedsignsandflags,andothersmarchedmoresolemnly,”shesaid.Thiswasanhistoricalmomentforthe

participantsinthismarch,forin1965themarcherswereattackedbypolicewithbillyclubsandteargas.Finally,Dr.KingaskedGovernorGeorgeWallaceforprotectionforthemarchers.WallacegrantedKing’srequest.Thosemarchersjustwantedequalrights;theywantedtoexperiencejusticeforonceintheirlives.Althoughmistreatedandabused,theynevergaveup,andtheycontinuedtoleadanon-violentcampaignforequalrights.Ms.Farquharstatedthatwhenshe,

alongwiththerestofthecrowd,tookaleftontoBroadStreetandstartedto-wardstheEdmundPettusBridge,sheandothersbecomeemotional.Shecontin-ued,“ItwasamazingtobewalkinginthefootstepsofpeoplewhohadcreatedsomuchchangeinAmerica.”Aftercrossingthebridgeandexperi-

encingagreaterappreciationofequal-ity,StudentSupportServices’membersheadedbackoverthebridgetoWaterStreet,wheretherewasastreetfestivalwithfoodandshops.Sonotonlydidthisgroupenjoyanunforgettablemoment,buttheyalsowereentertainedbythefestivalandshopsfilledwithculture.StudentSupportServicesprovidedanopportunityforstudentstoexperiencehistoryfirst-hand.

Whenitcomestofootballmovies,oneofthebesthastobe“TheBlindSide.”

Basedonatruestory,thismovieshowstheprogressofhowMichaelOherwentfromhomelessnesstoplayingfortheNFL.QuintonAaronplays

thepartofthere-nownedMichaelOher,effectivelyshowingOherasshyandupset.Throughoutthemovie,hedevelopsarelation-shipwiththeTuohyfamilyandshowshismorelovingandpro-tectiveside.Naturally,heshowshisgreatabil-

ityatplayingfootballduringthemovie.Manywomenwouldliketopossessthe

powerdisplayedbyLeighAnneTuohy(playedbySandraBullock).LeighAnneisthedeterminedmotheroftwochildrenwhodecidesshewantstohelpMichaelout.SingerTimMcGrawskillfullyportraysthe

partofSeanTuohy.Althoughheishesi-tantatfirstwhendealingwithMichael,hegrowstothinkofMichaelasasonandloveshimjustthesame.Healsoknowswhentobeobedientanddoashiswifesays(husbandsshouldlearnfromthis).KathyBatesembodiesMissSue,a

difficulttutor,butdoeshelpMichaeloutwithhisgradesagreatdeal.Batesalso

providesalittlehumorwhenshesaysthatTennesseehasabunchofbodypartsburiedunderthefootballfieldthatwillreachupandgrabhimasheisrunning.JayHeadisthatspunkylittlekid,SJ

AsUWAstudentsprepareforSpringBreak,somestudentsaremakingalternateplans.Manystudentsfrom

theU.S.andCanadawereplanningtogotoJapanandstudyduringtheirtimeawayfromschool.One21-year-oldMeridianCommunityCollegestudenthadjustarrivedinTokyowhentheearthquakechangedherpreconceivednotionsofJapaneseculture.CarrieMitchellofMeridianhadjustarrivedinherhotelroomwhentheunmistakableshak-ingbegan.Asshemadeherwaydownthestairstosafety,

MitchellmetotherEnglishspeakingpeoplewhoweregoingthroughthesamenightmare.Theywerestillto-getherasthe8.9quakestopped,andthepanicstarted.Aswordoftheaftershocksandpossibletsunamisspread,Mitchellandhernewfriendsstayedtogether.Thehotelfoundasafeplacetoshelterthoseintheirchargeandmakethemconfortable.Mitchellmadeplanstoreturnhomeassoonasaflightbecameavailable.ShesafelyreturnedtoMeridianonThursdayaftermanydaysofprayersfromherfamilyandfriends.The2011GreatEarthquakeofJapanhasadeathtoll

ofover20thousand-twoweeksaftertheearthquake.Nearly500thousandpeoplearelivinginshelters.Noonehaspredictedtheamountofdamagescausedbythisquake,tsunamiandaftershocks.The7.3earthquakeof1995caused$100billionindamagesandwasonceconsideredthemostexpensivenaturaldisasterinhistory.TheGreatEarthquakeofJapan-2011hasbeenup-

gradedtoa9.0onthescaleusedtomeasureearth-quakesaroundtheworld.In1935,twostudentsfromtheCaliforniaInstituteofTechnology,CharlesRichterandBenoGutenberg,developedawaytomeasuresuchoccurrences.Theirscaleisbasedonstrengthanddurationoftheseismicwavesduringtheearthquake.Itisnowreferedtoasthemomentmagnitudescale,sinceithasbeenimprovedthroughtheyearstobettermeasurethemovement.Thescaleusesaformulaofbase-10Logarithms.Each

numberis10timesasbadasthenumberbeforeit.Twois10timesworsethanone.Inthissystem,onequakecanbecomparedwithanyotherone.Aquakethatmeasuresbelow3cannotbefelt.Ami-

Anearthquakeof8.22compareswiththeTsarBomba,thelargestthermonuclearweap-onevertested.TheTobaeruptionwasoneofthelargestknownvolcanicevents75millionyearsago,anditmeasured8.5.TheEruptionofKrakatoainIndonesiain1883mea-sured8.7.TheLisbon,PortugalEarthquakein1755measured9.0.TheYucatanPen-

insulaimpact,whichcreatedtheChicxu-lubCrater65millionyearsago,wouldhavebeena12.33,andthemagnitudeoftheStarquakeonthemagnastarSGR1806-20registered22.78onDecember27,2004.InJapan,eachdayafterthequake,newhardships

arefound.Houses,businesses,cars,trucksandtrainsarepiledontopofeachother.Onebullettrainisstillmissing.Thetsunamicausedamajorproblemwiththe

FukushimaDai-ichinuclearpowerplant,andexpertsareworkingtorestartthedamagedcoolingsystembeforeradiationcanleakfromtheholdingtanks.Nowradiationhasbeenfoundinthemilkandfoodfromthesurroundingcountryside.ThiscontaminationwillcausemorehardshiponthefarmersofnorthernJapan.Manypeopleareexpectingagreatdropinthetour-

ismbusinessforthecomingweeksandmonths.Tourismbringsinover$5millioneachyeartotheJapanesepeople.Thedamagefromthe2011earthquakeisinthenorthernpartofJapan.Tokyoisrecoveringandthesouthernpartofthecountryhadverylittledamage.SouthernJapanisstillabeautifulplacetovisit.Inthemiddleofallthedamage,rainbowscanbe

Althoughearthquakeshappeneverywhere,theresi-dentsofAlabamaandMississippiarenotaccustomedtobeingwakenedbythetremorsofaquake.Never-theless,Theydohappennearus.Alabamahasseveralmildquakeseachyear.LastSaturday,a2.5quakewasrecordedinNewMarket,MadisonCounty,Ala.,about10a.m.Thenexttimeyoufeelthegroundshake,itmighthave

BrittanyKeith,ajuniorCISmajor,hasservedasUWA’sSTARScoordinatorsince2007.Ms.Keithhasbeenbusygearingupfortherallysincelastsemester.Ms.KeithsaidgettingreadyforHEDis“abitstress-ful.”HerjobasUWA’sSTARScoordina-tor“consistsofmarketingfortheevent,countlessmeetingsinMontgomeryalongwithweeklyconferencecallswithotherSTARSCoordinators,reservingbusesandmeals,designingt-shirts,makingpost-ers,recruitingstudents,andmakingsureeveryonegetsthereandbacksafely.”Whenaskedwhyshefeltitisimpor-

tantforUWAstudentstoattendHigherEdDay,Ms.Keithreplied,“Wewantthepeoplewhomakeourlawsandthosewhodeterminehowfundsaredisbursedtorealizethatthatwearenotapatheticvoterswhowillnevernoticemissingfunds.Budgetcutsaffectusdirectlybyincreasesintuition,lessscholarshipmoneyavailable,etc.Wegotoshowthemthatgettinganeducationisimpor-tanttous.”Studentsshouldknowthattheywillalso

inglyinnocentappearanceofthisicecreammanandhisconsumers,oneicecream

contributorinNewYorkCityhasdestroyedthisexteriorinoneoftheworstwayspossible.OnMarch18th,LouisScalawasarrestedforallegedly

sellingillegalprescriptiondrugsfromhisicecreamtruck,andthisdrugdealerapparentlymademorethan$1milliondollarsintheprocess.Scalasoldicecreamtonu-merousinner-cityNewYorkchildrenfromhisseeminglyappealing“LickitySplit”truck.However,thistruckwouldsupposedlymakeaddition-

alstopsatpredeterminedspotswheredrugcustomersknewtheycouldbuytheillegaldrugoxycodone.Ac-cordingtotheNewYorkOfficeoftheSpecialNarcoticsProsecutor,Scalaapparentlysoldmorethan40,000prescriptionpillsfromhisicecreamtruckarounddiffer-entareasofStatenIsland.Thisdealeriscurrentlyfacingchargesforheadinga

30-persondrugringwhichincludedmorethanadozendrugrunnerswhofilledfakeprescriptions.Additionally,officialssuspectthatNancyWilkinsabusedherpositionasanassistantataManhattanorthopedicofficebystealingblankprescriptionpadsandsellingthemfor$100dollarsapage.MostoftheindividualswhoScalarecruitedtofill

thesebogusprescriptionswerebothfinanciallydesper-ateandultimatelyaddictedtooxycodone.Accordingtoofficials,thiscasedemonstratesthein-

tenseriseofmanypeople’sprescriptiondrugaddictionbecauseitshowsthedesperatedistributionpracticesofdrugdealersandthestructureofthedrugunderworld.
