Boys Basketball

Western 61, Kokomo 46

The Kokomo Wildkats tipped off the 2020-21 season with a disappointing 61-46

road loss at Howard County rival Western on Tuesday night.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-3 lead and never looked back. The Kats made a

few runs to close the gap, but were never able to take control of the game and start

the season 0-1.

Leading the way for Kokomo was senior Jackson Richards with 21 points and

seven rebounds. Junior Bobby Wonnell added nine points for the Kats. Senior

R.J. Oglesby led Kokomo with 11 rebounds.

The Kats look to rebound from this loss next Friday when they travel to Peru. The

Kats will then travel to Westfield on Saturday, 12/5/20. This game was originally

schedule for 11/28/20, but has been re-scheduled.

The Kats will get back at it with a great week and a half of practice. We have a

tremendous group of young men this season and I know they will respond.

We had a great crowd at Western and appreciate all the support of Wildkat Nation.

We will need you loud and proud next week as we hit the road for a pair of games.

The KHS boys basketball team opened with a 15-point loss to Western. That margin of

victory was the largest for the Panthers in the series.

After Western jumped out to an 11-3 lead, the Kats came back to take a 17-16 lead early in

the second quarter on a steal and layup by P.J. Flowers. Western called a timeout, scored

on the ensuing play, and never trailed again.

The Kats did battle back in the fourth quarter, too. They had the ball down 49-43, but a

turnover and a pair of Western free throws stopped the rally.

Western put the game away late with free throws, hitting 12 of 14 attempts in the final

quarter.

For the game, the Panthers shot 22 times from the charity stripe, making 18 of them for

82%.

Kokomo actually had a better shooting percentage from the field than did Western. The

Kats hit 40% while Western made 37%.

The Wildkats weren’t so fortunate from long range. They took 16 shots from behind the

arc and made three (19%). Western made seven three-pointers.

Kokomo turned the ball over 18 times, leading to 18 points for the Panthers.

The rebounding for the game was remarkably close with the Kats pulling down 32 and the

Panthers grabbing 31.

The points in the paint were close too with the Kats putting in 24 to 20 for the Panthers.

Kyle Sanders, arguably Western’s best player, was a dismal 2-of-12 from the field, but

made up for it with 9-of-10 accuracy from the free throw line. He finished with 14 points.

Jackson Richards led all scorers with 21 points, matching a career high in points for the

senior.

No other Wildkat finished in double figures in scoring, but R.J. Oglesby did pull down 11

rebounds to lead everyone in that category.

The Kokomo girls basketball team hits the road for the first time with a game at Anderson on

Saturday. This will be the North Central Conference opener for the Lady Kats.

The Indians have a 2-4 record so far this season and they are 1-0 in the NCC. The Lady

Tribe lost their first three games of the year, won two, and then lost last night to North

Central. Their NCC win is over Richmond.

Two of their three losses have been close games. They dropped their season opener by two

(59-57) to Pike and lost to a 5-1 Fishers team by three (63-60). The other setback came to

defending Class 4A state champion Lawrence North.

Saturday’s game will be the 38th meeting of the series with Kokomo holding a 20-17

advantage.

Anderson has won the last six meetings. Kokomo last beat Anderson at Memorial Gym on

November 29, 2014, and the Lady Kats last win at Anderson came January 30, 2010.

The Indians are led by senior Tyra Ford, who is second in the NATION in scoring with her

34.6 points per game average. Ford, a 5’10” senior has scored at least 23 points in all five of

the Anderson games with her high this season coming against NCC foe Richmond, where

she poured in 49. Ford has played in 74 games for the Lady Tribe in her four years and has

scored 1521 points. She has made 48% from the field this year and 82% from the line. Her

Achilles heel is probably the three-point territory where she is just 2-for-25 this year. Ford

also leads the team in rebounds (47), assists (11) and steals (18).

As a team, Anderson shoots 38% from the field, 16% from three, and 69% from the line.

Comparatively, Kokomo’s numbers are 36%, 29%, and 56%.

Anderson’s 20-21 roster has three seniors, five juniors, three sophomores, and a pair of

freshmen.

Four starters return from the team that defeated Kokomo 75-38 at Memorial Gym last year.

In the aforementioned game, Anderson was balanced in their scoring with Tyra Ford scoring

17, Karlee Goodwin tossing in 16, and Erin Martin and Zoe Allen put in 15 and 10,

respectively. Chloe McClain led the Wildkats with 14 points and six rebounds.

In Kokomo’s last win at Anderson, an 85-42 blasting, Skylarr Shurn scored 21 points, Kali

Ackison had 11, and Abby Hemmeger added 10 points as the Lady Kats shot 59% from the

field

KHS Student-Athlete of the Week

AIJIA ELLIOTT

Aijia, a freshman on the KHS girls basketball team, helped the Lady Kats to

victories in their first two games. She came off the bench in the opener against

Lewis Cass to score 17 points and grab nine rebounds. Against Carroll, Aijia

got the starting nod and responded with a double-double of 11 points and 11

boards.
