    Regular exercise can benefit

    the body in many ways,

    helping men and women

    maintain healthier weights and

    lower their risks for devel-

    oping potentially deadly

    diseases. Though many

    people are quick to associ-

    ate exercise with its phys-

    ical benefits, those hours

spent on the treadmillalso can boost brain

    power.

    According to Dr. Barry

    Gordon, professor of neu-

    rology and cognitive sci-

    ence at Johns Hopkins

    Medical Institutions and

    coauthor of Intelligent

    Memory: Improve the

    Memory That Makes You

    Smarter, exercise has a

direct impact on thebrain. Thats because

exercise works directly on brain tis-

    sue, improving the connections

    between nerve cells, creating new

    synapses, growing new neurons

    and blood vessels, and improving

    cell energy efficiency. So while

many people may begin an exercise

regimen with a goal of trimming

    their waistlines or toning their

bodies, they might be happy to

know that those physical benefitsare accompanied by several cogni-

    tive benefits as well.

    As the American Psych-olog-

    ical Association acknowledges, the

    connection between exercise and

mental health is hard to ignore,

and the APA notes that the fol-

lowing are just a few of the mental

    benefits men and women might

    reap from regular exercise.

    IMPROVED MOOD

Many people feel great afterexercising, especially if that exer-

cise comes at the end of a particu-

    larly stressful day. However, those

extra laps on the track or those

hours spent on the treadmill dont

just pay short-term dividends. In a

    controlled trial overseen by Duke

    University researcher and clinical

    psychologist James Blumenthal,

    sedentary adults with major

    depressive disorder were assigned

into one of four groups: supervisedexercise, home-based exercise,

    antidepressant therapy, or a place-

bo pill. Those in the exercise and

    antidepressant groups had higher

rates of remission than those in the

    placebo group, and Blumenthal

    concluded that exercise was gener-

    ally comparable to antidepressants

for men and women with major

    depressive disorder. In addition, in

following up with patients a year

later, Blumenthal found that thosewho continued to exercise had

    lower depression scores than those

    participants who were less active.

    Losing a spouse can be

    hard enough, but losing

    a spouse and not know-

ing how to manage the fami-

lys finances can lead todespair. As you gather your

tax records this year, take a

few extra steps to help your

    spouse avoid added stress after

    youre gone.

    In many households one

    spouse takes care of the

    finances, such as paying bills,

    filing important papers and

    tracking investments. Its

    essential that the other spouse

at least knows the location of

these papers and how toaccess the assets. To provide

    structure to your records, start

with a balance sheet listing of

    all bank accounts, insurance

    policies and investment hold-

    ings, including applicable

    online passwords. Also list

    your physical assets and the

    location of ownership titles.

    Having a complete

    record of assets is important,

but so is knowing how to man-

age those assets. Make a list ofthings you consider important

    that your spouse might not

    know about. This might

include such things as how to

    manage retirement distribu-

    tions and estate issues. You

might also list the names of

    people who should be notified

    of your passing. Simple things,

    like routine chores to perform

at the vacation home or recre-

    ational vehicle, might provide

    comforting guidance.Educating your spouse on

financial matters can also be a

    satisfying social opportunity.

    Join with other like-minded

    couples to establish an invest-

    ment club where everyone

    participates in the decision

    making. Such venues often

    lead to important conversa-

    tions about managing money

    discussions not always easy

when its just you and your

    spouse.Candid conversations

    about family finances are

    sometimes better facilitated in

    front of a trusted financial

    advisor. Including your advi-

    sor will not only provide

another set of eyes, but can

    help provide structure and

    documentation that the other

spouse can rely upon in an

    emergency. Our office stands

ready to assist you with thisimportant financial matter.

    While there are many

ways to help elder-ly loved ones do all

    they can to maintain health,

one of the best ways to improveboth the physical and mental

health of senior citizens is med-

    itation. We know that medita-

tion can reduce stress and help

us relax, but recent studies have

    shown that meditation can also

    relieve pain, reduce the proba-

    bility of heart disease and

    improve creativity. Here are

    some other benefits of medita-

    tion:

    1. The deep breathing exer-cises central to any program of

    meditation encourage oxygen

enrichment to the blood.Senior citizens who suffer

    from digestion problems often

    see immediate relief because

    the oxygenation of their

    digestive functions is empow-

    ered through meditation. This

    extra oxygen boosts the

    immune system, heals the

    lungs and improves circula-tion.

    2. Meditation also causes

    increased alertness and the

    ability to interact with others

    and surroundings. The

    increased oxygen in the

    bloodstream of the elderly

user of meditation will causebrain functions to improve.

    3. Because both the mind and

    the body become more

    relaxed, the mental and phys-

ical health of the individual is

    improved drastically. Seniors

    who suffer from depression

can benefit from meditation.During meditation, feelings of

    happiness are created in the

    brain that increase daily hap-

    piness and satisfaction.

    4. Meditation improves physi-

    cal energy, making the senior

    Tooth sensitivity can

    be caused by a prob-

    lem with the tooths

    nerve and blood supply

    (pulp), or by exposure of

    dentin, resulting in dentin

    hypersensitivity.

    Dentin is a sponge-like,

    hard layer underneath enam-

    el (the outer white, hardest

layer of a tooth) that con-tains small channels that

connect the pulp to the out-

    side of the dentin. When

    dentin is exposed, there can

    be hypersensitivity.

    Dentin hypersensitivity

is a short, sharp pain not

caused by tooth decay. It can

affect up to one in every two

    people at sometime in their

    lives. This condition is esti-

mated to affect 40 millionpeople in the U.S.

    Hypersensitivity mostly

affects people in their 20sand 30s. Age changes dentin

    and decreases tooth sensitivi-

    ty. Age increases gum reces-

    sion (exposing dentin),

    enamel erosion, and tooth

    structure loss.

    Enamels hard texture

    protects the pulp and dentin.

    When it is lost, hypersensi-

    tivity occurs. The most com-

    mon complaints are caused

by cold and sweets. The painfrom enamel loss is caused by:

easy to learn and requires no

    The fact that meditation is

flexible and easy to do makes

    quickly enriching the lives of

    5. A study published in the

    Journal of Brain, Behavior and

    Valentines Day is upon

us. This is a day to

    celebrate our loved

ones and show them we care.

We also have to take care of

    our four-legged loved ones, as

    some Valentines Day gifts and

ideas may be hazardous to our

    pets.

    The most obvious warn-

ing is: Dont let your pets eat

    chocolate. Chocolate is one of

    the traditional gifts on

    Valentines Day but can be

    very dangerous to pets, even

    life threatening. The toxic

    compounds in chocolate are

    methylxanthines, mainly

    theobromine and, less impor-

    tantly, caffeine. The amounts

    of theobromine and caffeine

vary with the type of choco-

    late. For instance, unsweet-

    ened (Bakers) chocolate con-

tains 8 to 10 times the amount

    of theobromine as milk

chocolate. This is a very com-

mon toxicity in dogs and seen

less in cats just by nature of

    their eating habits.

    Clinical signs of choco-

    late toxicity usually occur

within six to 12 hours of

    ingestion. Theobromine

affects the body as a central

    nervous system stimulant, car-

    diovascular stimulant,

    increases blood pressure and

    nausea. Therefore, common

    signs of chocolate toxicity are:

    vomiting, diarrhea, hyperac-

    tivity, tremors, seizures, fast

heart rate and, in severe cases,

    death. If your pet ingests

    chocolate, contact your vet-

    erinarian or poison control

    immediately for treatment.

    Also, knowing the type and

    quantity of chocolate ingested

    is helpful.

    Another potential hazard

for pets on this sweet holiday

    is any sugar-free gum or

    candy. They commonly con-

    tain the sugar substitute xyli-

    tol. Signs of xylitol toxicity

can be seen as quickly as 30

    minutes and causes a sudden

drop in the bodys blood sugar

    (hypoglycemia). This may

    result in weakness, depression,

    loss of coordination, seizures,

    coma and even liver failure.

    Treatment should be initiated

    immediately if ingestion

    occurs.

    Some holiday flowers,

    though they are romantic, can

be toxic for your pet. The

    biggest culprits are lilies. They

are highly toxic to cats, so

make sure your cats cant get

near them, or choose a differ-

ent variety of flower but not

tulips (the bulbs are the most

    toxic). Amaryllis, daisies,

    chrysanthemums or any flow-

ers with thorns may be poten-

    tially dangerous flowers.

    Leftover gift-wrapping or

    decorations are enticing for

curious cats. Make sure all rib-

    bons, bows and other wrap-

ping are out of your pets reach

    and cleaned up. Cats especial-

ly like chewing on strings or

    ribbons which can cause

    choking or worse, an obstruc-

    tion in the intestines that

    could require emergency sur-

    gery.

    Candles are also a nice

    touch on Valentines Day but

not to paws and fur. Dont

    leave candles unattended, as

pets can easily be burned or

    the candles could be knocked

    over, causing a fire.

    One last warning is not

to give pets as gifts. Puppies

and kittens are very cute and

cuddly but owning a pet is a

    big undertaking. Purchasing a

pet should be done in a

    responsible way and only after

a lot of research. If youre

    ready, you should consider

adopting a pet from your local

    shelter. These steps can be

    done together and are roman-

    tic and rewarding.

    Have a sweet and safe

    Valentines Day!

the only one to conclude that

    exercise can have a positive

impact on mood. In a review of

    11 studies that examined the

    effects of exercise on mental

    health, Boston University pro-

    fessor of psychology Michael

    Otto and his colleagues found

that exercise could be a power-

    ful tool when treating clinical

    depression, and even recom-

    mended clinicians include

exercise as part of their treat-

    ment plans for depressed

    patients.

    ANTIDOTE TO ANXIETY

    Some researchers, Otto

    included, have begun to exam-

ine the effects of exercise on

    treating and possibly prevent-

    ing anxiety. The bodys nerv-

    ous system responds quickly

    when people feel frightened or

    threatened, often causing the

    bodys heart rate to increase

    and sweating and dizziness to

    occur. Those people who are

    especially sensitive to anxiety

    respond to these feelings with

    fear, and that makes them

    more likely to develop panic

    disorders. But Otto and fellow

    researcher Jasper Smits of the

    Anxiety Research and

    Treatment Program at

    Southern Methodist Univer-

    sity studied the effects that

    regular workouts might have

    on people prone to anxiety.

    Since exercise produces many

    of the same physical reactions,

such as sweating and an ele-

vated heart rate, the body pro-

    duces when responding to fear

    or threats, Otto and Smits

    wanted to determine if exer-

    cise might help people prone

    to anxiety become less likely

    to panic when experiencing

fear or threats. In studying 60

    participants with heightened

    sensitivity to anxiety, Otto

and Smits found that the sub-

    jects who participated in a

    two-week exercise program

    exhibited marked improve-

    ments in anxiety sensitivity

    compared to those participants

who did not take part in the

    exercise program. Otto and

    Smith concluded that this

    improvement was a result of

    the exercise group participants

    learning to associate the symp-

toms common to both fear and

    exercise, such as sweating and

    an elevated heart rate, with

    something positive (exercise)

    instead of something negative

    (anxiety).

    Regular exercise benefits

    the human body in numerous

ways, not the least of which is

its impact on the brain. More

    information on the link

    between exercise and

    improved mental health is

    Stringent lending poli-

    cies and the escalating

    costs of home owner-

    ship have led many prospec-

    tive home buyers to consider

    condominiums instead of sin-

    gle-family homes. Condos

    are typically less expensive

    than single-family homes,

    which makes lenders and

    borrowers alike feel more

    comfortable. Lenders feel

    better because the loans

    arent as large, while borrow-

    ers are more comfortable

    because such loans allow

    them to improve their stand-

    ing with lenders, potentially

setting the table for a low-

    interest home loan down the

    road.

    But the differences

    between buying a condo and

    buying a single-family home

    go beyond the bottom line.

    The following are a few

    things prospective buyers

    should know about condos

    before they view any proper-

    ties.

    Condos come with fees.

    Unlike single-family homes,

    condos come with homeown-

    ers association fees. These

fees cover the cost of mainte-

    nance and repairs to the

    property. This includes land-

    scaping and garbage collec-

    tion, as well as general

    repairs throughout the con-

    dominium complex. Fees

    vary significantly from com-

    munity to community, and

the best deal is not always

    the one with the lowest

    homeowners association fees.

Low fees tend to provide less

    bang for the buck, generally

    covering only the most basic

    services. Higher fees often

    mean the community offers

more amenities, such as a pri-

vate pool and gym for resi-

    dents. Some people prefer

    such amenities, while others

    would rather find better deals

    on their own. But prospec-

    tive condo buyers must

    include fees in their monthly

    budgets when determining

how much they can afford to

    spend.

    Condos come with rules.

    Owners of single-family

    homes can create their own

    rules for their households,

    while condo owners must

    agree to follow rules estab-

    lished by the homeowners

    association or the property

    management firm responsible

    for maintaining the commu-

    nity and enforcing the rules.

Rules may not allow pets or

only allow pets of a certain

    size. Other rules may restrict

    how owners can decorate

    their condos during the holi-

day season or how they can

    furnish the exterior of their

    properties, limiting patio fur-

niture to a set number of

    chairs or tables. Some condo

owners are glad such rules are

    in place, while others might

    find such stipulations intru-

    different rules, and prospec-

    tive buyers should familiarize

    themselves with a communi-

    properties within that com-

    Condos often have man-

    agement firms. Property

    management firms can be

great to deal with, but they

    can be troublesome as well.

    A good property manage-

    ment firm produces satisfied

    community members who

    speak glowingly of their com-

    munities, while a poorly run

    management firm can frus-

    trate homeowners who feel

    they are not getting what

    theyre paying for. Some

    property management firms

    fail to collect homeowners

    association fees for months at

a time, only to send letters

    demanding back dues down

    the road. Others simply dont

    live up to expectations, fail-

ing to make repairs in a time-

1 inches in diameter and 12

inches long. As you roll, gently

push the ends toward the cen-

    ter occasionally to prevent air

    pockets from forming and to

keep the logs at an even thick-

    ness.

    Wrap the logs in plastic

    wrap and refrigerate until firm,

at least 3 hours or up to 3 days.

    Bake the cookies:

    Preheat the oven to 325

    F. Line the bottoms of two 12-

    by-18-inch sheet pans with

    parchment paper.

    Remove the logs from the

    refrigerator and unwrap them.

Using a ruler to guide you and

a sharp knife, cut each log into

rounds inch thick. If thedough crumbles as you cut it,

    reshape each slice. Place the

    rounds on the prepared pans,

    spacing them 1 inches apart.

    Bake on the middle

    shelves of the oven, rotating

    the pans 180 degrees halfway

    through the baking time, until

set but soft enough to hold a

    slight indentation when

    pressed with a fingertip, about

    14 minutes. Let cool com-

pletely on the pans on wire

    racks.

    Store in an airtight con-

    tainer at room temperature for

    up to 1 week.

    ly manner while letting the

    property fall into disrepair. If

    possible, speak to current

    community residents about

    how the property is managed.

    If residents are not available,

    potential buyers should

    attempt to attend a home-

    owners association meeting,

which can shed light on what

its like to live within a given

    community and how accessi-

    ble the management firm is

    to community members and

how well it tends to those

    members needs.

Condos are not as private as

    single-family homes. Much

    like apartment dwellers,

    condo owners often share

    walls with neighbors. That

    means condo owners will

    have to sacrifice some priva-

    cy. Prospective buyers who

    consider privacy a top priori-

ty may want to continue liv-

    ing in an apartment until

they can afford to buy a sin-gle-family home. Though

    condo owners rarely have

    someone living above or

    below them, sharing walls

with neighbors is still not as

    private as owning a single-

    family home.

    Condominiums are

    great options for people who

want to own their homes but

    dont have enough money or

credit history to buy a single-

    family home. But buyers must

    educate themselves about

    condominium life before

    signing on the dotted line.
