Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) has been developed or people who:

are already teaching, but would like to take an internationally

recognised qualication to gain ormal recognition or their

give you the knowledge and skills that will help you develop your

TKT is modular and exible, allowing you to t your studies around

your work and other commitments you can take the modules over

a period o time that suits your needs.As well as covering all the basics o good teaching practice,

preparation or TKTcan be adapted or local needs. TKTcentres can

set their own preparation syllabus to meet the requirements o the

local teaching environment.

TKT: exible learning or language

teachers

TKT is divided into separate modules. You can take them all, or just

choose the ones that meet your needs. You have total exibility in

how and when you take the modules and receive a certicate or

each one completed.

The modules are divided into two main areas:

TKT core modules

There are our core modules designed to provide a oundation in the

practice and principles o language teaching.

TKT: Module 1 Background to language teaching

TKT: Module 2 Planning or language teaching

TKT: Module 3 Classroom management

TKT: Practical Assessment o teaching competence

TKT specialist modules

Thesemodulesprovide introductions to specialist areas o languageteaching and can be taken completely separately or added to the

core modules.

TKT: CLIL

A test o the understanding o this exciting approach to teaching

curriculum subjects through the medium o a second or third

language. TKT: Knowledge About Language

A test o knowledge and understanding o the systems o

language rom a teaching perspective.

TKT: Young Learners

A test o the background knowledge related to teaching young

learners in the 612 age range.

TKT: Module 1

Language and background

to language learning and

teaching

This module consists o three parts:

describing language and language skills

background to language learning

background to language teaching.

What does TKT: Module 1 test?

This module tests candidates knowledge o

the terms and concepts common in English

language teaching. It also ocuses on the

core knowledge underpinning the learning

o English and knowledge o the options

and resources the teacher can use in the

classroom.

The test

TKT: Module 1 consists o a single paper

lasting 80 minutes and containing 80

questions. The test is divided into three

parts: describing language and language

skills (40 questions), background to

language learning (15 questions) and

background to language teaching (25

questions).

TKT: Module 2

Lesson planning and use

o resources or language

teaching

This module consists o two parts:

planning and preparing a lesson or

sequence o lessons

selection and use o resources and

materials.


This module ocuses on the knowledge

and skills teachers need to be able to plan

a lesson ramework or series o lessons.

Teaching in this context also reers to any

assessment required by the teacher to

consolidate learning. It also ocuses on

the resources that are available to guide

teachers in their lesson planning.

The test

Computer-based tests

Computer-based tests ofer choice and convenience or candidates who preer to take their exam

on a computer. Other benets include additional exam dates adding more exibility to when

TKT: Modules 1, 2 and 3 are available to take in a computer-based ormat 15 times a year.

TKT: Module 3

Managing the teaching and

learning process

This module consists o two parts:

teachers and learners language in the

classroom

classroom management.


This module tests candidates knowledgeo what happens in the classroom during

language learning, the teachers role

and the ways in which the teacher can

manage and exploit classroom events and

interactions.

classroom management (40 questions).

TKT:

Practical

TKT: Practical is an accessible and

afordable way or teachers to get

certication o their teaching abilities. It is

ideal or teachers who have developed their

skills and need ormal conrmation o their

practical teaching competence.

Teachers may wish to take TKT: Practical as

part o a proessional development course,but this is not a requirement.

What does TKT: Practical test?

TKT: Practical includes assessment o:

lesson planning

classroom management

teaching skills.

The test

The test consists o the observation o the

candidates teaching by a Cambridge ESOL

assessor. The assessor can observe either

one 40-minute lesson or two 20-minute

lessons, o which one can be peer-to-peer

teaching. The test can take place as part o

a teacher training or teacher development

course. Alternatively, i the candidate is

already teaching, the test can take place

with their own class by arrangement with aTKTcentre.

The candidate will also be required to

complete a lesson plan or assessment. The

template will be provided by Cambridge

ESOL.

teaching in a target language and the

learning, thinking and language skills which

are developed across diferent curriculum

subjects. It tests knowledge o how to plan

lessons as well as the understanding o

activities and resources needed to support

a CLIL approach. It also tests knowledge

o lesson delivery and how assessment is

carried out in CLIL contexts.

TKT: Young Learners is a test o

to work, in the primary sector o education.

Who is TKT or?

TKTmodules are ideal or all teachers, whatever their background

and teaching experience.

TKT is accessible; there are no ormal English language requirements

or candidates.

Results

Results or TKTare reported as being in one o our bands, 14.

Every candidate receives a certicate or each module taken.

TKT results are issued through centres approximately two weeks

ater receipt o answer sheets by Cambridge ESOL.

How to register

Candidates can register or TKTup to six weeks beore the exam

session, or as little as one week beore a computer-based test.

Preparation courses leading to TKTare designed by individual

centres, based on the exam specications produced by Cambridge

ESOL. TKT is ofered around the world through the Cambridge ESOL
