Sindh Updates

PDMA Sindh Updates Flood Situation at Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri as of 21-9-2014

1. As of 21st September 2014, the flood levels (in cusecs) at Guddu Sukkur, and Kotri conveyed by Flood

Forecasting division are as under;

Barrage Capacity Cusecs

Inflow (Cusecs)

Outflow (Cusecs)

Flood Level

Guddu 1,200,000 285,000 259,400 Low

Sukkur 1,500,000 321,000 269,000 Low

Kotri 875,000 110,600 73,600 Below

2. As per Flood Forecasting Division, Pakistan Metrological Department’s flood routing model, it takes an

average of 78 hours (3.25 days) for flood water to reach to Kotri from Sukkur Barrage.

3. Under the prevailing conditions as mentioned above, it is very likely that the quantum of water, which

is present at Sukkur now, would further lose its force and volume by the time it would reach Kotri. This

may also increase the travel time from Sukkur to Kotri. However, if compared to the situation of 1st

September 2014 when Guddu had an inflow of 120,700 cusecs, Sukkur 85,600 and Kotri 44,000 with

10,700 cusecs as outflow from Kotri, the present flow and quantum of water is still greater than what

it was at the beginning of the month of September with flood level of “Below Low”.

4. Taking into account the river conditions mentioned at para-1 above and as part of preventive measure,

all the above districts may stay alert for immediate safe evacuation of population living in the Kacha

area/river bed and low lying areas, with their livestock to safer and higher elevations as identified in

Districts’ Contingency Plans at shortest possible notice as and when conveyed. Maximum mobilization

of transport be ensured by the districts to achieve safe evacuation well in time as and when needed.

5. It is also requested that all preparedness measures including activation of District Emergency Operation

Centre round the clock of your respective district manned with well-versed staff and concerned officers

for an effective response mechanism including early warning dissemination through manadi be ensured

if needed. Appropriate flood fighting resources such as dewatering pumps may also be prepositioned

and deployed at low lying areas in operational status.

6. The following actions may be taken by the respective Departments/Agencies:

HEALTH DEPTT / PPHI: To work in close coordination with the above mentioned district

administrations/DDMAs ensuring availability of all necessary medicines including Anti Snake

Venom (ASV) at all DHQ and THQ hospitals as well as RHCs and BHUs.

LIVESTOCK DEPTT: To ensure availability of fodder for livestock as well as veterinary services

including availability of vaccinations and their timely administration.

KWSB/WASA (Hyd): To ensure drainage of water from the low lying areas of the city if needed.

NHA: To ensure safety of major communication routes

7. Updated status of current evolving situation is also present on PDMA Sindh website

http://www.pdma.gos.pk/new. The progress / necessary measures taken by District Disaster

Management Authorities and any assistance needed may please be coordinated with PDMA on
