After the crucifixion the disciples where in such state of shock that even though the risen Christ had already shown himself to the apostles they were still processing the extraordinary event of his resurrection. After the trauma of Good Friday and still not sure of what there is to become of the whole idea of the kingdom of God, they go back to their life routines. With shattered hearts and hopes we find them, not in the city that witnessed Jesus’ life, passion, death, and resurrection, but to the opposite direction, to Emmaus. Initially they didn’t recognize him; they didn’t know it was the Christ. Perhaps the fact that he was in a resurrected body got in the way, he may have looked different. It happened to Mary Magdalene in the place where he was buried, mistaking him by the gardener. It happened to some of the disciples at the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where they thought he was a ghost. But how can we see Jesus and recognized him today? The second reading from the First Letter of John gives us an insight of how to see Jesus in ourselves. To see the risen Christ in us involves keeping God’s commandments: Whoever says, “I know him and don’t keep his commandment is a liar and the truth doesn’t dwell in him”. By keeping God’s commandments, by honoring His word with our lives, by bringing light, wisdom and beauty we allow Christ to reside fully in our hearts. We start thinking, feeling and acting aligned with Jesus because “is Jesus who lives in me”. The answer to the above mentioned question also leaps from the encounter of these two disciples on their way to Emmaus two thousand years ago. Jesus today, just like then, acquires concrete manifestations. We see Christ in our celebration of the Eucharist and in our respect for his presence in our tabernacles. It begins with that sacred moment of our encounter with him in the Eucharist, in the breaking of the bread, the food of angels, and of course food for men and women. But this is just the start. Seeing him includes all facets of creation and human endeavor. If we really see him not anymore we shall contemplate statements like “all women are the same”, or “all Latinos behave in one way”, or “all Americans think the same way”. If we really know Jesus we can see him in all. We see Jesus in all women, especially in suffering, battered women with low self-stem and blurred vision of who they are. We see him in all races especially in those brothers and sisters who to this day struggle with being respected, treated with dignity, and fighting racism. This is what it means for us Catholics to see Jesus. Trying to limit him to the world of theological and academical discourse or leaving him on the level of a majestic and altruistic idea, or mere social activism is not enough. We open our eyes to get to know him and the world that surrounds us not with the eyes of the body but with the eyes of faith. This call is for all men and women, young and old, saints and sinners. Only in such we will see Christ in the breaking of the bread!

Después de la crucifixión, los discípulos estaban en tal estado de conmoción que, aunque Cristo resucitado ya se había mostrado a los apóstoles, todavía estaban procesando el evento extraordinario de su resurrección. Después del trauma del Viernes Santo y aún sin estar seguros de lo que sucederá con la idea completa del reino de Dios, regresan a sus rutinas de vida. Con corazones destrozados y esperanzas los encontramos, no en la ciudad que fue testigo de la vida, pasión, muerte y resurrección de Jesús, sino en la dirección opuesta, a Emaús. Al principio no lo reconocieron; no sabían que era el Cristo. Quizás el hecho de que estaba en un cuerpo resucitado se interpuso en su camino, pudo haber lucido diferente. Le sucedió a María Magdalena en el lugar donde fue enterrado, confundiéndolo con el jardinero. A algunos de los discípulos les sucedió en la orilla del mar de Galilea, donde pensaron que era un fantasma. Pero, ¿cómo podemos ver a Jesús y reconocerlo hoy? La segunda lectura de la Primera Carta de Juan nos da una idea de cómo ver a Jesús en nosotros. Ver al Cristo resucitado en

nosotros mismos implica guardar los mandamientos de Dios: Quien dice: "Yo lo conozco y no guarda sus mandamientos, es un mentiroso y la verdad no mora en él”. Al guardar sus mandamientos, al honrar su palabra con nuestras vidas, al traer luz,

sabiduría y belleza, permitimos que Cristo resida plenamente en nuestros corazones. Empezamos a pensar, sentir y actuar alineados con Jesús porque “es Jesús el que vive en mí”. La respuesta a la pregunta anteriormente mencionada surge en el encuentro de estos dos discípulos en su camino a Emaús hace dos mil años. Jesús hoy, como entonces, adquiere manifestaciones concretas. Vemos a Cristo en nuestra celebración de la Eucaristía y en nuestro respeto por su presencia en nuestros tabernáculos. Comienza con ese momento sagrado de nuestro encuentro con él en la Eucaristía, en la fracción

del pan del cielo, alimento de ángeles, y hombres y mujeres. Pero esto es sólo el comienzo. Verlo incluye todas las facetas de la creación y esfuerzo humano. Si realmente ya lo vemos, nunca más haremos declaraciones

como “todas las mujeres somos iguales”, o “todos los latinos se comportan de la misma manera”, o “todos los estadounidenses piensan iguales”. Si realmente conocemos a Jesús, podemos verlo en todos. Vemos a Jesús en todas las mujeres, especialmente en las mujeres que sufren, maltratadas, con pobre autoestima y visión borrosa de quiénes son. Lo vemos en todas las razas, especialmente en aquellos hermanos y hermanas que hasta el día de hoy luchan por ser respetados, tratados con dignidad y luchan contra el racismo. Esto es lo que significa para nosotros los católicos ver a Jesús. Tratar de limitarlo al mundo del discurso teológico academicista o dejarlo al nivel de una idea majestuosa y altruista, o el mero activismo social no es suficiente. Abrimos los ojos para conocerlo a él y al mundo que nos rodea no con los ojos del cuerpo sino con los ojos de la fe. Este llamado es para todos los hombres y mujeres, jóvenes y ancianos, santos y pecadores. ¡Solo en tales veremos a Cristo en la fracción del pan!

The Institute for Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend an Exploring the Diaconate session. It is a time to pray, discuss, and learn more about the dis-cernment process and the formation program that aspirants and candidates pursue. Please join us, with your wives, if married, as we explore the potential of a vocation, engage in dialogue and pray in search of the next step. All are welcome to attend any of the sessions.
