From the desk of the Education Chairman: Welcome back LSA Members. Hope everyone had a great summer and are looking forward to another year of LSA education. As you may or may not know Bob Noble has stepped down as the education direc-tor, I would like to thank Bob for his commitment and for what he has done for our industry and for bring back education to LSA. My name is Marc Dearing, CRL. I will be the new Education Director. My goal this year is to offer classes each month and for Locksmiths who are ALOA members and are trying to achieve the next level of recognition. We will be offering classes where the PRP test will follow each class. I would appreciate any input you may have for future class ideas. If you are interested in hosting a class, as the class chairman, LSA will pay your class fee. Please contact me with any comments or suggestions.

Thank you to John for his efforts in putting this class together. Look forward to seeing you there.

Marc A. Dearing, CRL— Education Director

Did you know that by tightening one of the one-way security screws tighter than the other it will release the other a little. Once one of the released screws is removed it can be replaced with a like screw that is not one-way. Tighten this screw significantly tighter than the

other and you will be surprised how easily the other will come out. After all is done, go and buy the proper tool to do the job.

I did not know our U.S. Government had a Cost Savings Award System until I interviewed Ken Griffin, this month’s member. He won the award in 1997, by recommending that his locksmith be transferred to a private contractor. It was accepted and Ken was now collecting unem-ployment and severance pay. He then moved to Mikado, Mi. which is in the Thumb area. Let me move the calendar back to 1966, then tell the road he took to become a locksmith.

When Ken was 17 years young, he dropped out of East Detroit H.S. (now East Pointe) to join the U.S. Navy. After two tours in Viet Nam, he was on medical leave spending two years in and out of Veterans Hos-

pitals. While in the Navy, he attained an E-4 rating, earned his G.E.D, and gained several college credits. After being discharged from service, Ken took some business courses at Macomb County Community College. At one point he took a Foley-Belsaw course and transferred to Walsh College where he soon earned a B.A. Like many students, his interest turned to another area - Law Enforce-ment. Back at M.C.C.C. he received an Associates Degree but because of his eyesight he could not get employment (He was enabled to do all this thanks to the U.S. Vocational Rehabilitation Act).

During his time attending M.C.C.C., a fellow student lost his job as a locksmith at Selfridge A.F.B. in Mt. Clemens. Through this friend, Ken was able to be hired in the carpentry section as a locksmith. Being a veteran, he was classified as a conditional career person and very ready to use his skill. After a brief time, he was transferred to the Warren Tank Command working in the Research and Develop-ment Department. A coworker, who was the plant locksmith, retired and Ken was …………….

WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

When selling your services, be honest. How often have we sensed insincerity from the sales person who was representing a product? What did you do then? You probably kept shopping. That is what your customer is doing to you, now.

Know your product well. Be certain how you intend to present it to your customer. Let your customer know what to expect. Deliver the goods in good faith.

By keeping these basic standards, you can expect the majority of your customers to return when needed.

given the job. During 1991, Ken was transferred back to Selfridge where he finished his government career.

When L.S.A. was a fledgling association, it advertised in a trade magazine that Ken saw and decided to join. There he met Jimmy Mowry who encouraged Ken to join A.L.O.A. He has been a continuous member of both associations up to the present. Since moving to northeastern Mi., Ken is semi-active in his mobile locksmith service.

Ken is a member of the Naval War College Foundation and Navy Institute which do many funding projects.. He is an officer in the Navy League and that takes a lot his time as he must travel to many seminars and meetings throughout the Midwest. Now you know the rest of the story.

I cannot end the article without telling about Ken’s favorite “case”: I take you to a jail at Selfridge A.F.B. where a guard and a prisoner are both locked in the same cell. Ken is called and upon arrival finds the cell latch broken Surveying the scene for a better way to extricate the men that torching the bars, he spots an exterior window. Without a sound, Ken proceeds to exit the building followed by a squad of guards. Approaching the window of the cell, he found a padlock on it and tells the guards to find the key. The locksmith title must have made Ken the top commander for soon the key appeared along with a much needed lad-der and both emerged with no harm done to facilities or persons.

Ken’s admonition to all of us: “Look around and all around for a simpler solution.”
