Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Welcome to Week 2 Term 1

I would like to welcome everyone back for the 2021 school year. I would like to especially welcome the new families including our brand new Kindergarten students who commenced their formal schooling today.

2021 will once again be an exciting and busy year for all at Leeton Public School with various activities planned for staff and students. All students will have opportunities to be involved in many varied learning and extra curricula experiences.

Cricket – LNPSSA T20 Cricket

On Tuesday 2nd February Mrs Tiffin and our cricket team will kick off our sporting competitions for 2021, competing in the LNPSSA cricket competition. Good luck to everyone involved.

2021 Staffing / Class structures

We are currently finalising classes for the 2021 school year. All children in K-6 have transitioned to their 2021 classes today. The number of classes in NSW DEC (Department of Education and Communities) schools are determined by a range of factors including student enrolment numbers. The number of students enrolled or commencing enrolment at Leeton Public School determine class structures and class sizes.

Executive staff (Assistant Principals and Instructional Leaders)

Our Executive Team have a crucial role in the school in regards to supporting the Principal and supporting and supervising staff, as well as organisational, logistical, curriculum, welfare and teaching and learning responsibilities. Our 2021 LPS Executive Team members are: Aliesha McDonald, Jo Pearce, Cathie Ramponi and Catherine Tabain.

2021 Swimming Carnival

Our annual swimming carnival will be held on Monday 15th February for all students in years 3-6 (and students turning 8 years old this year who wish to compete in 50m, 100m and 200m races). Keep an eye out for further details.

General Reminders

Playground supervision commences at 8.50am. If it is necessary for your child to be at school before this time, students are to sit under the Infant’s COLA or on benches next to Primary classrooms. Students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am

If students are late to school, they need to go with their parent to the office to mark their attendance at school.

Classes finish in the afternoon at 3.25pm. Students who need to be picked up earlier for an appointment must be signed out at the front office by a parent before being collected from their classroom.

If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher please make an appointment to do so at a mutually convenient time to ensure your issue is given the attention it deserves. Contact the office to do this.

There are always plenty of notes and information at the beginning of the year. If you do happen to miss or misplace a note, copies of permission notes for school events and activities can be found in the front office.

Summer Precautions

As is to be expected, we can experience some warm weather at this time of the year. It is important that we are all taking appropriate care of ourselves to deal effectively with this. Please ensure that your child/ren has a hat each day and brings plenty of water to drink. Teachers are happy for students to have drink bottles of water on their desks in class. It is also a good idea for children to have a roll on or small tube of sunscreen in their bag that they can reapply when needed.

Newsletter

The LPS newsletter will be sent home by email every MONDAY. Parents are also reminded that Newsletters are available each week on the Leeton Public School website. If you wish to submit something for the newsletter, it must reach the office by NO LATER than 3.30pm on the preceding Friday. As the collation of the newsletter is a massive task, I have directed the office staff not to accept submissions after this time.

Bring Your Own Device at Leeton Public School

Leeton Public School has a BYOD program that includes all students in years 1-6.

Principles of BYOD at LPS

The school aims to deliver “excellence in education through empowered and technology fluent students who create, demonstrate and share their learning”. Bringing in your own preferred device expands technology use beyond the technology that the school and P&C can supply, and to accommodate family preferences, the school allows for a range of devices to be brought to school, within limits as defined by the device guide.

The devices themselves are used in a range of programs as support tools, and the teachers will be very glad to share with you how devices will be used in their classrooms.

Inclusion for all students is always a priority and the school has committed to ensure students can also use school and P&C provided technology (“stay-at-school-devices”) if they cannot bring their own device.

BYOD Contracts will be sent home for all students in Years 1-6 to sign along with their parents. Students in years 1-6 can still currently bring their devices as they are covered by their 2020 BYOD contract until Monday 1st March.

Health Watch

Please notify the school immediately if your child has any health care needs that have changed from 2020. Also please remember at our school we have a number of children who are at risk of anaphylaxis if they come into contact with nuts. Please support us to keep these children safe by ensuring that you only send nut free food to school each day.

If you would like to discuss this with me or would like more information about this extremely serious allergy, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

If your child has any allergies or medical needs which we are unaware of or you need to update your child’s Health Care plan, please contact the school immediately.

As always, I would like to reiterate to all parents that if you have a concern or query regarding your child's education please make an appointment to see the relevant classroom teacher or appropriate Executive Member to further discuss the matter.

Parents are asked to address any emails to our school email address. These emails will then be forwarded to the appropriate teacher. It is important that concerns be initially addressed with classroom teachers as often issues can be addressed quickly.

Wishing everyone a fantastic week.

COVID-19 Guidelines Term 1 2021

We continue to follow the appropriate advice from the Department of Education and NSW Health to maintain a safe environment for our students, staff and community. Just a reminder that all students should be learning at school unless they are unwell or have a medical certificate to support their absence. Activities permitted at school will be conducted in a way that is safe and appropriate in the current environment. Activities that remain on hold will be reviewed at regular intervals and will recommence when appropriate based on health and other relevant advice. Please see the following site for more information. https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families

Visiting NSW Schools

Parents and carers are not allowed on school sites or at off-site school events held during school hours except for the following purposes only:

Essential parent and carer meetings with teachers and/or school executives, with a scheduled appointment. This includes scheduled meetings with parents and carers of prospective students.

Parents and carers who attend a school administration building or another defined location for the purpose of picking up their child if they are unwell or where they have been asked to arrange for a COVID-19 test after their child has displayed flu-like symptoms while at school.

Parents and carers who need to be on-site for canteen and uniform shop duties or to collect or purchase uniforms.

Parent or carer volunteers required as educational support roles for activities essential to the delivery of the curriculum such as reading groups, music, dance and kitchen garden areas. Schools are required to have scheduled programs in place and remind parents and carers that they must not attend school unless it has been previously arranged.

Parents and carers can attend parent orientation meetings and ‘meet the teacher’ meetings with school staff for all year/stage groups. Meetings should be limited to 1 hour where possible. A COVID-19 Safety PlanExternal link must be in place.

Parents or carers of boarding school students who would like to collect students for local activities.

From Term 1 2021, all NSW public schools use the Service NSW COVID Safe Check-in External link.

Look for the COVID Safe QR code posters when you enter your child’s school. Be sure to sign in at the school administration building according to your school’s visitor guidelines. Parents and carers who are only dropping off and picking up students do not need to check in using the Service NSW QR code.

All entry is through the School Office to complete the External Visitors to School Site Form.
