EVENT CONCEPTUALIZATION: Why Delhi?

India is on the path of progress like never before, and the ‘Make in India’ campaign, a flagship program of the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has only hiked this progress. This has marked a new era for almost all sectors of the Indian economy, also enveloping the legal sector, owing to the immense influx of international investment. Moreover, there is a strong indication from the government for the proposal of a phased strategy for the legal sector. If this happens, it will commence the implementation of progressive reforms, thus paving way for the entry of international law firms and other legal entities. Thus, it is now high time for the Indian law firms to raise their stakes in order to ease the transition process on the whole. While, the Indian law sector has faced quite a lot in the recent past; thanks to the unsteady markets, international expansion of domestic firms and introduction of new practice areas for legal firms. However, all of this has only contributed towards making the industry stronger, more experienced. The need of the hours now is for the LPO market to grow and expand towards capturing business through India-based cross- border focused law firms. However, before moving ahead on

this unconquered path, it is imperative for the LPO vendors to gain an insight on the complexities of Litigation, Risk and Compliance, Intellectual Property, Disputes, and Legal Outsourcing. And this holds true for firms and professionals from the global arena as well. It is with the aim to enlighten all individuals in this regard, that the Global Legal ConfEx was organised in the capital city of India, Delhi! The event is slated to offer an unmatched platform for the promotion of welfare, interests, education and professional development of all legal professionals who hail from this industry.

This gala affair held in the first trimester of the year 2016, on 20th of April, witnessed around 200 in-house lawyers, over 150 law firm partners & service providers, and global speakers in excess of 50, the presence of all of whom made it worthy of everyone’s valued time and presence. And for what it’s worth, it provided an impeccable opportunity for networking, an aspect which has gained immense importance in today’s date and time.

EVENT SETUP & REGISTRATION

The night was dark and the moon was young. It was just the perfect time for the on-site team of Events 4 Sure to give a finishing stroke to the preparations that was going on for a few months now. Every single detail that had been promised was now being turned into an exemplary reality, and in fact more. The set up was erected and the décor was given its final touch, the halls were prepped and so

were the tea and lunch venues. Come dawn and we were all set to welcome our amazing participants, and our esteemed delegates. We promptly registered the guests, who poured in almost endlessly, and welcomed them all with a big bright smile.

OPENING REMARKS: ONE BY ONE INTRODUCTIONWith the onus of hosting this event and making it a grand success, we kick-started it with an introductory session. All our participants introduced themselves briefly, thus

breaking the ice and getting to know the who’s who of the industry. This short yet effective session helped one and all to ease in a seemingly new environment!

THE KEYNOTE

It is the Keynote session that sets the ball rolling for any conference, and so was the case with the Delhi Global Legal ConfEx as well. The dais was graced by the presence of some exemplary speakers, of the likes of Gladys Daniel, the Attorney from Daniel And Gladys Advocates, India who expressed her thoughts on ‘Recent Developments in Intellectual Property in India’.

Our second speaker, Michael Harrington, from the Mintz Group, Hong Kong threw light on the subject of Intelligent Due Diligence: Boots on the Ground, while Dr. Surat Singh, Advocate, Supreme Court & Chairman, Center for Law and Good Governance enlightened the listeners with his understanding on the subject of improvement of the

quality of laws and governance in India. Ms. Pavani Reddy, Managing Partner, Zaiwalla & Co., UK sportingly and rather efficiently played the role of session moderator. Yet another guest speaker, Shashank Karnad, Partner and COO – Forensic Services, KPMG, India presented his purview of White Collar Crime, a topic seldom discussed but something which holds great importance!

The sheer variety of the topics discussed right in the first session of the day, enthralled the listeners, only fuelling their curiosity to know more, learn better! The expectations had also risen, which only made us more zealous, because we knew what we had in store was simply beyond the anticipation of the attendees!

CROSSROADSThe keynote, as knowledgeable as it was, to be frank was also a little overwhelming. Hence we all took a break for refreshments, and more so for letting some caffeine kick-in. Our delegates used this opportunity to get to know each other better and ensure that they made the most of this unique juncture. Up and ready for getting infused with some more knowledge bites, the participant now faced a dilemma, mostly a happy one. It was time for them to make the critical decision of which panel discussion they wished to attend, and more importantly which was the one they were ready to give a miss.

While the panel discussion in Hall A was held on the subject - ‘Creating a Toolkit to Manage Litigations: Multi-Jurisdictional Litigation’, that in Hall B revolved around the topic - ‘Anti-Corruption Master Class – Developments, Challenges and Role of External Service Providers’. Now that the routine was set, an array of discussion followed through the day covering various topics pertaining to the current scenarios of the legal sector in India and abroad. One of them being on ‘International Arbitration: Best Practices, Challenges & Solutions’ while the other concerning a subject brought to light more recently - ‘The New Compliance Frontier: Cyber Security and Data Privacy’. In yet another discussion was discussed the nitty-gritty of Risk Management in a Global Environment. Other discussions held in the day pondered upon various facets such as - ‘Litigation Technology Solutions for

2016-17’,’ Successful Arbitration Policies & Strategies Pertaining To Cross – Border Merger & Acquisition’, ‘Establishing Information Governance- Cloud Computing and Technology’, all of which directly concern the present day situation of the legal framework. The importance of Ethics and Compliance Boot Camp was also pondered upon in a discussion, along with the factors leading to the Comply or Die situation, in this context.

Another factor that leads to making this gala event, even more interesting was the inclusion of case Study Presentations by the experts of the industry. Abhijit Yadav, Senior Director - Global Risk and Investigations Practice, FTI Consulting, India presented his well-thought out view on the various facets of Exposing Corporate Fraud in Asia, while Tanaz Buhariwalla, Vice President, IDA Ireland – The Government of Ireland’s Investment Promotion Agency, India divulged the details relating to the Indian Outbound FDI. Both the subjects were as intriguing as they are relevant and were thus able to leave the audience completely flabbergasted. The sheer experience and expertise that our presenters brought along with them left our audiences pretty much spell-bound!

While the thirst for knowledge and information was successfully catered to, the hunger pangs and had stated their dance and inevitably so. And as always and Food and Beverage Management team was well-prepared for this. We laid out a grand lunch and a sumptuous one at that. While refueling their systems, our delegates did not miss the opportunity to have a tête–à–tête with the key members of the industry who were also a part of this event. Several visiting cards exchanged hands, and key alliances were made, all thanks to the large, unmatched platform that this event offered!

The technological empowerment of the legal industry, yet another relevant subject, also gripped the attention of the panelists present at the podium. To the extreme delight of one and all, this interactive session took the entire event to the zenith of enthrallment, something that will be fondly remembered by one and all for a long time to come.
