2035 SPEC 10 ROAD/OVAL KIT
THANKS FOR BUYING THE RJ SPEED SPEC 10 ROAD/OVAL KIT. IT IS COMPLETE LESS ELECTRICS, AND MADE FOR CARPET OR PAVEMENT RACING. IT REQUIRES A 540 OR 550 SIZE MOTOR, 4 OR 6 CELL BATTERY PACK, TWO CHANNEL RADIO WITH ESC, AND A SERVO SAVER TO FIT THE BRAND OF RADIO YOU HAVE CHO-SEN. THE TOOLS YOU WILL NEED ARE A SMALL PAIR OF PLIERS, A 1/4 “ SOCKET OR WRENCH, AND A 7/16 “ SOCKET WRENCH FOR THE DIFFERENTIAL. HEX WRENCHES TO FIT THE SOCKET HEAD SCREWS ARE IN-CLUDED IN THE KIT. YOU WILL ALSO NEED PAINT MADE FOR LEXAN FOR THE BODY. REFER TO THE TEXT AND PICTURES FOR EACH STEP, AND ALSO THE EXPLODED VIEW DRAWING FOR THE CHASSIS ASSEMBLY , AND PARTS REFERENCE IT IS BEST TO READ EACH STEP THROUGH, LOOK AT THE PICTURES, DRAWINGS, AND PARTS, THEN DO THE ASSEMBLY STEP. MAKE SURE TO LOOK AT THE ASSEMBLY HINTS PAGE! YOUR KIT CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING:
BAG L5 REAR SPEC RACING TIRES 1064 LATE MODEL STOCK CAR BODY 2035 INSTRUCTION PKG.
BAG N1 CHASSIS KIT BAG L2 REAR AXLE PARTS BAG L4 FRONT SPEC RACING TIRES
STEP 1 OPEN BAG N1 AND NIB ASSEMBLE A 5069 MOTOR PLATE TO THE 5076 FLEX PLATE WITH TWO 3/8 SCREWS IN-CLUDED IN BAG N1B. MAKE SURE THE TABS ARE IN ALL THE WAY BEFORE INSTALLING THE SCREWS AND DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THEM. ATTACH ONE 5057 TO THE MOTOR MOUNT IN THE SAME MANNER.
STEP 2 ATTACH THE OTHER MOTOR MOUNT TO THE FLEX PLATE AND CHASSIS BRACE AS BEFORE. SET THE REST OF BAG N1B ASIDE AND OPEN BAG N1A. ATTACH ONE 5245 CHASSIS SPACER TO THE FRONT OF THE MOTOR PLATES WITH TWO LARGER 3/8 SCREWS FROM BAG N1A.
STEP 3 ATTACH THE REMAINING FOUR 5245 CHAS-SIS SPACERS TO ONE OF THE 5068 CHASSIS SIDES WITH 3/8 SCREWS FROM BAG N1A.
STEP 4 ATTACH THE MOTOR MOUNT/FLEX PLATE ASSEM-BLY TO THE CHASSIS SIDE WITH SCREWS FROM BAG N1B. ALSO ATTACH THE SECOND 5057 CHASSIS BRACE TO THE CHASSIS SIDE JUST IN FRONT OF THE MOTOR PLATE WITH THE SAME SCREW SIZE FROM N1B. DON’T OVERTIGHTEN.

STEP 5 INSERT THE 5244 FRONT AXLE PLATE, 5242 BAT-TERY TRAY, AND THE 5071 REAR BODY MOUNT INTO THE SLOTS IN THE CHASSIS SIDE AS SHOWN.
STEP 6 SLIDE THE OTHER 5068 CHASSIS SIDE OVER ALL OF THE PARTS ATTACHED TO THE OTHER ONE. MAKE SURE THE TABS IN THE 5076 FLEX PLATE AND 5057 CHASSIS BRCE ARE ALL THE WAY IN AND USE 3/8 SCREWS FROM BAG N1B TO ATTACH THEM AND LARGER 3/8 SCREWS FROM N1A IN ALL OF THE ROUND CHASSIS SPACERS.
STEP 7 FLIP THE CHASSIS OVER, SLIDE THE 5072 BUMPER FROM BAG NIB BETWEEN THE FRONT AXLE PLATE AND CHASSIS SPACER AND ATTACH IT TO THE FRONT AXLE PLATE WITH TWO SHORT SCREWS FROM BAG N1B.
STEP 8 FLIP THE CHASSIS BACK OVER AND AT-TACH THE TWO LONGER BODY POSTS TO THE HOLES IN THE BUMPER WITH 3/8 SCREWS AND ADD THE ADJUSTABLE NUTS. ADD A DROP OF LIGHT OIL IF THE NUTS ARE TOO TIGHT ON THE POSTS.
STEP 9 ATTACH THE TWO SHORTER BODY POSTS AND NUTS TO THE REAR BODY MOUNT IN THE SAME MANNER.
STEP 11THREAD A JAM NUT (THIN ONE) ON EACH 5377 KING-PIN,INSERT THE KINGPIN THROUGH THE FRONT AXLE PLATE AND RETAIN WITH LOCK NUT.
STEP 10 OPEN BAG L1B. SNAP A 5221 E-CLIP ON THE END OF EACH 5364 STUB AXLE (ONES WITH GROOVES DOWN THEM) AND PRESS THEM INTO THE STEERING BLOCKS AS SHOWN
STEP 12 MAKE SURE THAT THE STEERING BLOCKS SLIDE FREELY ON THE KINGPINS, LUBE THEM WITH SILICONE GREASE OR LIGHT OIL, ADD THE SPRING , WASHER , AND RETAIN WITH A 5221 E-CLIP . REPEAT FOR THE OPPOSITE SIDE MAK-ING SURE THAT THE TAB ON THE STEERING BLOCK POINTS TO THE REAR. 2
STEP 13 OPEN BAG M1D. THREAD TWO BALL STUDS INTO THE FRONT 5057 BRACE. IF THEY FEEL TOO TIGHT, USE A HOBBY KNIFE TO OPEN UP THE TOP PART OF THE HOLES A LITTLE.
STEP 14 INSERT THE 1/4” CAP SCREWS THROUGH THE REAR BRACE AND NYLON SPACERS INTO THE HOLES IN THE SIDE OF THE LARGER CHROME COL-LARS. ALIGN THE COLLARS SO THAT THE HOLE POINTS TOWARD THE BALL STUD ON EACH SIDE AND TIGHTEN THEM. YOU CAN ADJUST THE ANGLE WITH THE DAMPER ROD IN THE NEXT STEP.
STEP 15 YOU CAN INSTALL YOUR MOTOR FIRST IF YOU WISH WITH SCREWS AND WASHERS FROM BAG M3, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ALIGN IT SO THAT YOU CAN SOLDER THE WIRES IF NEEDED. YOU CAN ALSO SLIDE THE REAR AXLE OUT TO INSTALL OR REMOVE THE MOTOR WITH DISTURBING YOUR DAMPER SET-TINGS. SCREW THE NYLON BALL CUPS ONTO THE THREADED ENDS OF THE DAMPER RODS. SLIDE A SMALL COLLAR, SPRING, AND SILICONE TUBE ONTO EACH ONE, THEN INSERT THE END THROUGH THE LARGE COLLAR ATTACHED TO THE 5057 BRACE AND SNAP IT ONTO THE BALL STUD ON THAT SIDE. ADD A SILICONE TUBE AND COLLAR ON EACH ONE. PUSH THE REAR COLLARS FORWARD UNTIL THE SILICONE TUBES COMPRESS SLIGHTLY AGAINST THE LARGE COLLAR AND TIGHTEN THEM. SLIDE THE FRONT COLLARS BACK UNTIL THEY COM-PRESS THE SPRINGS A LITTLE AND TIGHTEN THEM. YOU CAN ADJUST THEM LATER TO CHANGE THE CARS’ HANDLING. YOU CAN TRIM THE LENGTH OF THE RODS AS NEEDED TO KEEP THEM FROM RUBBING ON THE CHASSIS SIDES .
STEP 16 OPEN BAG L2 INSTALL THE 5188 RIDE HEIGHT ADAPTORS AND ADD THE 5452 REAR BUSH-INGS. SET THE HOLES IN THE ADAPTORS LOWER FOR MORE GROUND CLEARANCE.
STEP 19 INSTALL A THIN NYLON AXLE WASHER ON THE AXLE, SLIDE THE AXLE THRU THE BUSHINGS, THEN ADD THE 1/4” AXLE SPACER AND 5311 HUB WITH SETSCREWS . LEAVE A SMALL AMOUNT OF SIDEPLAY IN THE AXLE.ADD A DROP OF LIGHT OIL INSIDE EACH BUSHING. TIGHTEN EACH SET-SCREW A LITTLE A TIME TO KEEP FROM WARPING THE HUB. YOU SHOULD FILE A FLAT SPOT ON THE AXLE WHERE EACH SETSCREW HITS TO MAKE IT MORE SECURE AND EASIER TO REMOVE.

STEP 20 OPEN THE BAG WITH THE SMALL BALLS IN IT AND SNAP ONE INTO EVERY OTHER HOLE IN THE OUT-SIDE SET OF HOLES IN THE DIFF GEAR. LUBE THEM WITH SILICONE LUBE OR LIGHT OIL. ASSEMBLE THE DIFF BY IN-STALLING ONE DRIVE RING ON THE AXLE, THE GEAR, SECOND DRIVE RING AND ALUM. ADAPTOR, 5309 HUB, THIN STEEL WASHER, BLUE THRUST BEARING, THICK STEEL WASHER,(OR TWO THIN), CONE WASHER, AND DIFF NUT. TIGHTEN THE NUT TO REMOVE SIDEPLAY, AND ADJUST UNTIL YOU CAN HOLD BOTH HUBS AND THE GEAR DOES NOT SLIP EASILY. INSTALL YOUR PINION GEAR ON THE MOTOR SHAFT ALIGNED WITH THE DIFF GEAR, SLIDE THE MOTOR BACK AND CAREFULLY MESH THE GEARS, THEN TIGHTEN THE MOTOR SCREWS.
STEP 21 INSTALL YOUR SERVO WITH SERVO SAVER ON THE FRONT OF THE BATTERY TRAY WITH SERVO TAPE SUPPLIED. TRY TO GET THE OUTPUT ARM CLOSE TO THE CENTER OF THE CAR.USE A TIE STRAP TO MAKE SURE IT STAYS. INSTALL THE WIRE LINKS AND ATTACH THEM WITH COLLARS AND SET SCREWS FROM THE HARDWARE BAG. AFTER INSTALLING THE REST OF YOUR RDAIO GEAR, MAKE SURE THAT THE OUTPUT ARM IS STRAIGHT DOWN TO ASSURE THAT THE STEERING IS EQUAL IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. FOR SEVERE CONDITIONS, ADD A SECOND COLLAR ON EACH SIDE TO KEEP THE LINKAGE MORE RIGID.
STEP 22 INSTALLYOUR RADIO RECEIVER AND ESC ON TOP OF THE BATTERY TRAY. MAKE SURE TO LEAVE ROOM TO INSERT A TIE STRAP TO HOLD YOUR BATTERY PACK UNDER THE BATTERY TRAY AND SET WHERE YOUR PLUGS FOR THE MOTOR, BATTERY AND RADIO GEAR WILL REACH. MAKE SURE TO USE SMALL TIE STRAPS OR TWISTEMS TO KEEP ALL OF THE EXCESS WIRE LENGTHS OUT OF HARMS WAY. YOU SHOULD ALSO USE SOME STICKY BACK VELCRO STRIPS ON THE BATTERY PACK AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BATTERY TRAY TO KEEP IT FROM SLIDING AROUND.

NOW YOU’RE READY FOR THE FUN PART . CHARGE YOUR BATTERY CAREFULLY ACCORDING TO THE MANU-FACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS AND SET UP YOUR RADIO ACCORDING TO THE RADIO MFR. INSTRUCTIONS.CHECK OUT YOUR STEERING AND THROTTLE TO MAKE SURE IT’S ADJUSTED CORRECTLY. SET THE CAR DOWN IN AN OPEN AREA ,AND HIT THE THROTTLE A COUPLE OF TIMES TO SEE IF IT RUNS STRAIGHT. AD-JUST THE RADIO TRIM AS NEEDED BEFORE TRYING TO RUN AT SPEED .ADJUST THE DIFF WITH THE LOCK NUT SO THAT IT SLIPS A SMALL AMOUNT BEFORE THE CAR TAKES OFF. DEPENDING ON THE MOTOR AND BATTERY YOU HAVE CHOSEN, THE CAR MAY BE VERY FAST. MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN A LARGE , OPEN AREA. ADJUSTING THE COLLARS ON THE REAR DAMPER WILL ADJUST HOW HARD THIS CAR TURNS AS WELL AS ADDING SHIMS TO THE FRONT SPRINGS.THE SPEC 10 IS BUILT WELL, BUT CAN BE BROKEN IF DRIVEN INTO SOLID OBJECTS REPEATEDLY AT HIGH SPEED. REPLACEMENT PARTS AND ACCESSORIES ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR LOCAL HOBBY SHOP. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR RJ SPEED SPEC 10 OVAL/ ROAD RACER!!
STEP 23 INSTALL THE BUSHINGS IN THE FRONT TIRES, APPLY A LITTLE LIGHT OIL ON THE STUB AXLES , IN-STALL THE TIRES AND RETAIN WITH LOCKNUTS. TIGHTEN THEM UNTILTHE TIRE WON’T TURN EASILY, THEN LOOSEN UNTIL IT JUST SPINS FREELY. INSTALL THE REAR TIRES WITH TWO 1/2” CAP SCREWS EACH FROM THE DIFF BAG. MAKE SURE TO APPLY A DROP OF LIGHT OIL TO THE REAR BUSHINGS , ALSO.
STEP 24 SET YOU BODY DOWN OVER THE CHASSIS AND MARK THE OUTSIDE ON THE BLUE FILM FOR THE BODY MOUNTS AND WHEEL WELL CUT OUTS. USE THE WINDOW MASKS PROVIDED AND PAINT THE BODY AS YOU WISH USING PAINT MADE FOR LEXAN PLASTIC. USE MASKING TAPE OR LIQUID MASK TO LAY OUT THE COLOR SEPARA-TIONS FOR THE PAINT JOB YOU DESIRE. TRIM THE BODY AND DRILL THE MOUNT HOLES BEFORE OR AFTER PAINT-ING AND THEN PEEL THE BLUE FILM, THEN APPLY ANY DECALS YOU HAVE. ADJUST THE MOUNT HEIGHT TO SUIT THE CONDITIONS YOU WILL BE RACING IN SO THAT THE BODY DOES NOT CONTACT THE RACING SURFACE.

HINT –THREAD THE HOLES IN ALL OF THE 5245 CHASSIS SPACERS WITH A 4-40 TAP IF YOU HAVE ONE AVAILABLE TO MAKE THE SCREWS HOLD BETTER.
HINT: BEFORE INSTALLING, HOLD THE 5377 KINGPIN BY THE THREADED END IN A HAND DRILL AND USE VERY FINE SANDPAPER, THEN METAL POLISH TO MAKE THE SURFACE OF THE KINGPIN SMOOTHER FOR A MORE CONSISTENT SUSPENSION. KEEPING THEM CLEAN AND RE-LUBED WITH SILICONE GREASE ALSO WILL MAKE THE HANDLING BETTER.
. HINT: RUN A 1/8 DRILL THROUGH THE HOLE IN THE 5351 STEERING BLOCK S AFTER INSERTING THE 5364 STUB AXLES AND/OR TRIM THE OUTER EDGES OF THE HOLES WITH A SHARP HOBBY KNIFE. MAKE SURE THEY SLIDE FREELY ON THE KINGPINS. ADD A LITTLE LIGHT GREASE OR SILI-CONE LUBE, INSTALL THE STEERING BLOCKS, THEN THE SPRINGS, WASHERS, AND E-CLIPS
HINT: GET YOUR AXLE THROUGH THE BUSHINGS, ATTACH A DRILL TO ONE END, LUBE THE BUSHINGS WITH LIGHT OIL AND RUN IT FOR A WHILE TO BREAK THE BUSHINGS IN TO THE SUR-FACE OF THE AXLE. MAKE SURE TO KEEP IT OILED. AND SLIDE IT BACK AND FORTH A SMALL AMOUNT WHILE RUNNING. ADD THE OTHER SPACERS AND THE SET SCREW HUB. HINT: TIGHTEN THE SETSCREW LIGHTLY, REMOVE THE HUB AND GRIND OR FILE A FLAT SPOT WHERE THE SET SCREW HITS THE AXLE SO THE HUB WON’T SPIN ON THE AXLE UNDER LOAD. THIS IS A MUST IF YOU UPGRADE TO HYBRID OR ALUMINUM SET SCREW HUBS.
HINT: YOU CAN SCRATCH THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE DIFF HUB WHERE IT TOUCHES THE ALUMINUM ADAPTOR A LITTLE WITH COARSE SANDPAPER AND USE A LITTLE SUPER GLUE TO KEEP THE HUB FROM SLIPPING ON THE ADAPTOR. ALSO TRIM AROUND THE EDGE OF THE HOLE IN THE OUTSIDE OF THE HUB TO MAKE SURE THE BALL THRUST BEARING SITS FLAT. YOU CAN ALSO SCUFF ONE SIDE OF EACH DRIVE RING TO KEEP THEM FROM SLIPPING AGAINST THE AXLE HUB OR ADAPTOR, BUT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THEM OVER AND USE THAT SIDE AFTER THE BALLS WEAR A GROOVE IN THEM.
ASSEMBLY HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS
FRONT END
REAR AXLE AND HUBS
RACING & SETUP SUGGESTIONS
ALL CARS ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DUE TO VARIATIONS IN PARTS AND ASSEMBLY CARE AND TECHNIQUES , BUT THESE GENERAL SUGGESTIONS WILL APPLY. TRY YOUR CAR OUT WITH CLEAN TIRES WITH SOME TRACTION COMPOUND OR WD-40 AP-PLIED TO THE REAR TIRES. IT’S BETTER TO START WITH A CAR THAT IS STABLE THAN ONE THAT HAS SEVERE OVERSTEER. IF YOUR CAR TRIES TO ROLL OVER IN THE CORNERS, YOU NEED TO REDUCE THE PRESSURE ON THE RIGHT REAR TIRE. YOU CAN MAKE A SMALL AD-JUSTMENT BY TIGHTENING THE LEFT COLLAR AND SPRING ON THE DAMPER AND TIGHTEN THE RIGHT REAR SILICONE TUBE & COLLAR, OR LARGER ADJUSTMENT BY ADDING A SHIM ON TOP OF THE RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION SPRING. THIS INCREASES THE CROSS WEIGHT ON THE LEFT REAR AND RIGHT FRONT TIRE, REDUCING THE TENDENCY OF THE RIGHT REAR TO BITE TOO HARD AND FLIP THE CAR. ALL ADJUSTMENTS VARY ACCORDING TO THE SURFACE YOU ARE RACING ON AND THE TYPE OF TRACTION COMPOUND IN USE THERE AND HOW MUCH OF IT IS ON THE TRACK. THERE ARE DIFFERENT FRONT SPRINGS AVAILABLE FROM SOME RC MANUFACTURERS AND OUR REAR SPRINGS ARE THE SAME SIZE AS ONES USED BY ASSOCIATED RC ON THEIR PAN CARS. BALL BEARING SETS ARE AVAILABLE FROM SEVERAL RC SOURCES AND OUR CARS REQUIRE 4 –1/8 X 5/16” FLANGED BEARINGS FOR THE FRONT WHEELS AND 2– 1/4 X 3/8 FLANGED BEARINGS FOR THE REAR AXLE.
AVAILABLE ACCESSORIES 5246 3-PC FRONT AXLE PLATE 5247 REPLACEMENT OUTER ARMS (2) 5066 OFFSET FRONT ARMS FOR 5246 THESE ARE MADE TO REPLACE THE 5244 FRONT AXLE PLATE. THEY ARE MADE IN THREE PIECES SO THAT YOU CAN REPLACE ONE SIDE IF BROKEN WITHOUT HAVING TO SPLIT THE CHASSIS SIDES TO GET IT OUT. ALSO , YOU CAN TUNE YOUR CAR BY MOUNTING THE OUTER ARMS ON TOP OR BOTTOM OF THE CENTER PLATE, OR EVEN ONE SIDE ON TOP AND THE OTHER ON THE BOTTOM. INSTALL THE CENTER BY SPLITTING THE CHASSIS AND REPLACING THE 5244 PLATE WITH THE CENTER PLATE FROM THE 5246 KIT . YOU CAN THEN ADD THE OUTER PLATES AS YOU WISH. USE 5-40 X 3/8 SCREW (7030) AND 7207 LOCK NUT IN THE REAR HOLE AND THE SUP-PLIED 4-40 X 1/4 SCREW THRU THE CENTER PLATE AND THREAD IT INTO THE OUTER ARM.
USE OUR 5318 (NARROW) ALUMI-NUM HUB TO UPGRADE YOUR DIFF. IT WILL MATE UP TO THE 5740 ALUM. DIFF ADAPTOR.
