Long-term plan for excellent buildings: renovation of existing facilities
Middle school closures remain a necessary driver of the available K-6 pathways for SY22-23
James P. Timilty Middle School Washington Irving Middle School
There is no definite proposal for the Timilty school building yet. This building could be used as a K-6, 7-12, or swing space.
A community process will be held over the coming months to determine which existing school(s) will move into the school building
The building is being proposed to be repurposed as a K-6 school, which would serve as a permanent solution for the Roslindale K-5s.
A community process will be held to determine which existing school(s) will move into the school building
K-6 Expansions
Our objective is to map out the path to K-6 for most elementary schools over the next several years. For our assessment, we used four areas of impact for prioritization:
K-6 Pathway Framework
Impacted by school closures
Current building capacity for expansion
Current expandable lot capacity
Path to permanent solution
Addressing schools impacted by school closure is our first priority in order to re-configure enrollment capacity.
Assessing which schools have space in their current building to go K-6 with no or minor changes to programming and/or the facility
Exploring whether there is room to add a modular as a temporary solution
Where temporary or less than ideal solutions are required, we also consider the path to more sustainable solutions, including repurposing existing school buildings
Revisiting Phase II for K-6 Expansions and New Buildings
As announced on May 12, 2021, BuildBPS aims to establish three new K-6 school buildings:
1. Dorchester PK-6 (new school site needed)
2. Roxbury PK-6 (new school site needed)
3. Allston-Brighton PK-6 (repurposing of the current Jackson-Mann building site via MSBA project application process)
While these new builds may serve as a long-term solution, we do not project these new builds to begin site and school selection until 2026, making it the least favorable solution for schools that urgently need expansion capabilities
Elementary schools impacted by middle school closures
Schools with guaranteed pathways to the Timilty and Irving need new grade 6 options

Convert to K-6 in SY22-23
*Requires modular classrooms
We are pursuing two options for Blackstone, Mendell and Sumner for SY22-23 ● Due to physical space limitations, these schools are not
able to add grade 6 in SY22-23
● We are pursuing two options for SY22-23:
1) Provide a guaranteed pathway to a different school2) Give families a priority during the student
assignment lottery
● We will work with school leaders and communities to determine which option families prefer before presenting a final recommendation in December
● We will continue to work towards grade 6 solutions for SY23-24 and beyond

7-12 Expansions
With the closure of the Timilty and Irving we know there is a need to add more 7th and 8th grade seats General Education
❏ There are roughly 90 general education students in each grade.
❏ We estimate there are enough empty seats in 6/7-12s to serve 45 of those students in grade 7 and 30 in grade 8, leaving an unmet need of about 45 to 60 students per grade.
English Learners
❏ There are currently 7 grade 6 and 13 grade 7 students in SEI programs.
❏ There are sufficient empty seats in 6/7-12 schools to accommodate these students.
Students in Special Education Programs
❏ There are 9 grade 6 and 18 grade 7 inclusion students. Serving them in 6/7-12 schools likely requires expanding inclusion seats.
❏ There are currently 4 total grade 6 and 7 students assigned to the EI-Internalizing program at the Irving, though there were 10 students per grade assigned before the pandemic.

Impact on schools currently serving 7th
and 8th grades
Planning High Schools serving
grades 9-12
Addressing student pathways disrupted by school closure is our first priority; we want to ensure program match and geographic proximity
Assessing which schools have space in their current building to add 7th and 8th grades with no or minor changes to programming and/or the facility
Estimating how the additional capacity in the middle grades may disrupt or reinforce pathways for K-6, K-8, Middle Schools, and other high school programs
Considering the implications for 9-12 Schools. Some of our schools do not have near term solutions to add 7th and 8th grades; others will be part of our permanent 9-12 portfolio.
Our objective is to map out the path to 7-12 high schools to fulfill our goals for high school redesign over the next few years. In the meantime, we need to expand some programs after
considering the following four factors:

Our current assessment of potential changes to high school programs
7-12 Pathway Framework
For next school year, Fall 2022, we will add 7th & 8th Grades at The English High School.
● This provides a clear pathway for students while minimizing the disruption to other school communities and addresses unmet seat needs in the district.
● This is the only high school with the Emotional Impairment - Internalizing program that has physical space to expand.SY 22-23
7-12 Expansions
27
To determine the next 7-12 school expansions and to understand the impact of these expansions on our K-8 schools, we will engage with the community by school situation
● Individual community meetings with 9-12 schools with space: Brighton, Burke, CASH, English, Excel
● Joint community meetings with schools organized by category (4 separate community meetings):
○ K-8
○ Middle Schools
○ Non-exam 6/7-12 Schools
○ 9-12 schools without space to expand
Organizing to Engage
