A Message from Fr. Sebastian’s Desk: The Good Shepherd

The Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, presents us chapter 10, of the Gospel of John. The feast of St Mark, though omitted today, falls on this day and in the rural setting, the farms and the fields used to be blessed today. Jesus the Good Shepherd, is a familiar metaphor to the extent we can call it a cliché. It rings in our ears with a memory and some from the newer generations may not feel anything about it. However, when we go through the image of a shepherd going after one stray sheep after leaving ninety-nine of them for the time being, it evokes some feeling in us. Or else, when Pope Francis speaks to the pastors that they should smell the sheep, it evokes the need of a spiritual bond between the people of God and their spiritual leaders.

The image of the shepherd who goes after the lost sheep, the parable of the prodigal son, the widow sweeping her entire house looking for a lost coin, have all one thing in common: the love of God that reaches out to the sinners, the outcasts, the sick, the suffering, and those in the periphery and margins. The doors of God are widely open for the children of God to get back in soon as they realize the love of God. More than an image from the agricultural society and idyllic pastoral images of a shepherd’s life, Jesus wants us to feel the warmth of the love God has for us. A shade of that acceptance and love, we Christians in turn have to exhibit to all God’s children. They may be in the form of vagabonds, prisoners, aliens, deviants from the familiar norms through which we have been categorizing men and women.

The pandemic scene once again grips most of the nations with another wave of COVID-19 with variant forms of it striking again. Complacency and let up in precautionary measures may happen with the increase in vaccination against the virus. However, as on April 19, vaccinations could not reach even half of the world population. Against the 141 million number of cases world over, 904 million people have been vaccinated so far. We had 31 million cases in the USA alone. Only 2.61% of the world population has been fully vaccinated. Let us pray to the Good Shepherd who is concerned about the suffering sheep world over, that so many are the sheep that need the care and love of the shepherd.

Rev. Sebastian T. Augustine, CMI Pastor

A request from St. Anthony - St. Alphonsus R.C Church

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10)

With so much uncertainty in the world, the resolve of our priests and religious, ministers and teachers, and all people of faith has only grown stronger in Brooklyn and Queens, but so have the needs.

More than ever, we need your help to spread the light of Christ to our city and neighbors by giving to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal. Your participation joins you in faith with others in the Church to do good works during challenging times in new innovative ways:

• Connecting our young people to the Church • Feeding the hungry • Visiting the sick and imprisoned • Giving shelter to the homeless • Welcoming the stranger • Caring for the elderly • Sharing our faith • Educating the young • Forming deacons and priests

The work you support with a donation to the Appeal goes beyond the abilities of any one parish while benefit-ing the faithful in all parishes including St. Anthony - St. Alphonsus R.C. Church.

As a committed parishioner, friend, and Catholic, we need your support to uphold our mission. We are grateful to the 38 people who have made a generous commitment to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Prayer for the Year of St. Joseph

O Saint Joseph, guardian of Jesus and

husband of Mary, we pray to you for

guidance in this “Year of Saint Joseph” as

proclaimed by Pope Francis.

By your example we have been encouraged

in our daily work and in parenting our

children. You teach us to accept others as

they are, without exception.

To you our Heavenly Father entrusted his

Son, Jesus Christ. In you Our Lady placed

her love and trust. And through your

mentoring, Jesus grew into his adult life.

We praise you and ask of you to defend us

and our loved ones from every evil and guide

us with your grace and mercy.

Amen.

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire to receive you in my soul. Since I cannot at this

moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you.

Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.
