GREETINGS FROM THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AT NDSU!

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many of our plans to change or pivot over the past several

months. At NDSU, we’re beginning a new academic year and our faculty are delivering classes

and labs in a hybrid flexible (HyFlex) model for the first time ever. This model allows us

to continue offering an in-person experience to students who choose it, and lets students

and faculty who are vulnerable, uncomfortable, in isolation or in quarantine remain an active

part of the NDSU community by learning or teaching synchronously. While this is changing

the way our campus looks and feels this fall, we remain committed to delivering the

high-quality education that the NDSU College of Engineering is known for. Our mission

remains unchanged … to educate innovative problem-solvers and create new knowledge

to improve lives in North Dakota and beyond.

The pandemic is also changing how we interact with our alumni and donors, forcing us to

cancel many of our in-person events. But even though we can’t gather together this year,

our annual scholarship celebration continues to be an important event for the college.

That’s why we decided to shift to a virtual program and continue our tradition of celebrating

the generosity of our scholarship donors and the accomplishments of our students. Due to

increasing competition among universities, scholarships have never been more critical to

our success as we seek to attract and retain the best, brightest, and most diverse students

in the programs within the College of Engineering. For the 2020-21 academic year, we awarded

nearly 400 scholarships totaling $1.06 million to undergraduate students. These scholarship

recipients represent a high-achieving tier of students within the College of Engineering,

and while they have all been awarded a scholarship based on different criteria…academic

levels, majors, financial need, involvement and leadership, career aspirations … there is one

thing they all share in common. Their lives have been impacted by the generosity of our

scholarship donors.

PROGRAM SPEAKERS

Michael Kessler, DeanDr. Kessler joined the faculty of NDSU as the Dean of the College of Engineering in July 2017. He completed his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at LeTourneau University and graduate degrees in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to coming to NDSU, Dr. Kessler was the Berry Family Director of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University and also held faculty positions at Iowa State University and the University of Tulsa. A native of Custer, South Dakota, Dr. Kessler resides in Fargo with his wife, Michelle, and their three children.

Joshua Brose, studentJoshua is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. He is originally from West Fargo, North Dakota. In addition to his academics, Joshua is active on campus in Chi Alpha, a campus Christian ministry organization. He will graduate from NDSU in May of 2021.

Kylee Arndt, studentKylee is a senior majoring in electrical engineering. She is originally from West Fargo, North Dakota. Kylee currently serves as the NDSU student body Vice President. She also is active in the Engineering Ambassadors, Society of Women Engineers and Greek Life. She will graduate from NDSU in December of 2021.

PROGRAM SPEAKERS

James and Jean Jorgenson, donorDr. James and Jean Jorgenson initiated their endowed scholarship to civil engineering students in 1999 but their connection to the College of Engineering stretches back to 1960. James earned his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the University of North Dakota and a Ph.D. in civil engineering with an emphasis on structures from Purdue University. He was a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at NDSU from 1960 to 1996, including serving as the department chair for 11 years from 1970 to 1981. Upon retiring from NDSU in 1996, James worked for Metal Building Software, an engineering software company that he and Jean started. The Jorgensons currently reside in Fargo. They have three children, two of whom are NDSU engineering alumni.

Barry Schuchard, donorBarry and Sue Schuchard established a named scholarship fund in the fall of 2019 to provide renewable scholarship support for an incoming freshman majoring in civil or construction engineering. Barry earned his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from NDSU in 1983. He is currently the Chief Value Officer and Vice President for KLJ where he is involved in developing client relationships, providing project quality assurance and mentoring employees for leadership roles. Barry is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states and serves as President for the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Dakota. He is also a trustee of the NDSU Foundation. Barry and Sue are loyal Bison fans and supporters. They have four children and currently reside in West Fargo.
