Please let me introduce myself to those of you who have never heard of CARU GWIN. My name is Ffion Lewis Jones and I am the tastebuds behind CARU GWIN and I do just that - I love wine. Many years ago I was introduced to wine – the good stuff, not the plonk with funky labels I used to guzzle while watching the Eurovision Song Contests as a student! My wine guru was a wonderful gentleman and a local legend, Glynne Jones. I think it was fair to say that Glynne enjoyed his wine and my family and I spent many an afternoon or evening, Christmas and even the odd holiday or two in his company. I have a fond memory of him sat in a restaurant in the village of Floure just outside Carcassonne, thoroughly engrossed in a massive leather bound wine list trying to decide what to choose. Needless to say his choices were spot on! I became a devotee of French wine and it did take me quite a while to acknowledge anything produced outside France in the "Old World". Although I am still an Old World girl at heart, I love trying wines from all over the world. I can, however still be swayed by a funky label! In 2015 when I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity of taking over from an established wine supplier, CARU GWIN was uncorked! The prospect of discovering new wines was just too good to turn down. In the last five years I have been fortunate enough to develop my taste buds by tasting so many new wines. It also gives me the perfect opportunity to put to good use some of the information I gained through completing both Intermediate and Advanced levels in Wines and Spirits from the Wines and Spirits Educational Trust which were invaluable in being able to expand my knowledge of wine and the wine industry - and I have a certificate to prove it! I currently supply wines to businesses throughout Ceredigion as well as to a growing number of individual customers from my little ‘cave’ in Aberaeron. My premises are fully licensed and I am registered under the Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme (AWRS), as indeed are all of my suppliers. I stock a broad spectrum of over one hundred wines including still, sparkling and fortified with prices starting at £6.99. You don’t have to compromise when it comes to good wine and settle for the mass produced rubbish often found in supermarkets. Good wine does not have to cost an arm and a leg if you know where to find it and I always try to provide quality wines at reasonable and competitive prices. 2020 has not been a kind year to many of us. However, even though I haven’t been able to hold any tastings and many of the businesses I supply have been closed, CARU GWIN has gone from strength to strength due to my lovely customers. I decided early on in the pandemic that I would offer a free delivery service once a week and this has taken off. Little did I think back in March that I would still be delivering throughout Ceredigion and further afield in November! With Christmas just around the corner too, I plan to be able to add a second delivery day if the situation demands. I can also offer safe and socially distanced collection from CARU GWIN HQ. I hope that in 2021 we will be able to return to some sort of normality and I will be able to hold some tastings where I will be able to share with you some of my old favourites as well as some new additions.
