Biographies of Guest Speakers

Kamran AliManaging Director, AEP Transmission Planning and Asset Renewal

Kamran leads and oversees the company’s activities in planning and renewal of ~40,000 circuit miles of Transmission across 13 states and four Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs). In addition, his team participates in off-footprint initiatives to support AEP’s strategic objectives. Transmission Planning and Asset Renewal organization assesses the adequacy of the transmission grid and recommends capital projects in coordination with RTOs and other stakeholders for the benefit of AEP’s customers. Ali is responsible for ensuring rationalization and prudence of the Transmission portfolio totaling $3 billion a year. He has held several leadership positions since joining AEP in 2006. He served as director – East Transmission Planning responsible for leading transmission planning activities in the PJM RTO. He also helped develop a regional team to prepare for FERC Order 1000 that introduced competition in Transmission. Ali started his career at AEP in the substation design standards department. Kamran has a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Alabama. He also has a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Kansas State University and a master's degree in business administration (MBA) from Ohio University. He holds a professional engineer license in the state of Ohio.

Shadab AliManager, Transmission, PPL Electric Utilities

Shadab oversees all transmission planning functions including model building for the planning and protection models at PPL. Shadab has been employed with PPL since 2012 and has over 12 years of diverse experience in the electric industry, including working in various roles in Transmission Planning, Distribution Operations, Smart Grid Implementation and Generation in USA and India. Shadab holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power System from India and an MBA in Finance from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Ryan AbshierManager of the Indiana Planning & Protection Group, CenterPoint Energy

Ryan’s group is responsible for Transmission and Distribution Planning, System Protection, and SCADA engineering for the Indiana portion of CenterPoint Energy's footprint. Ryan has been with CenterPoint Energy and its predecessor company, Vectren, for 15 years, including 12 in Transmission Planning where he was the primary Facility Ratings contact. Ryan received his BSEE degree from the University of Evansville.

Nicholas PoluchSenior Manager, NERC & Cyber Protection, Talen Energy

Mr. Poluch serves as the Senior Manager for Talen Energy's NERC & Cyber Protection program, which includes 19 NERC-registered plants across the U.S. He has worked in the electric generation and chemical industries for more than 25 years; including various management positions in operations, project management, corrective actions programs, global business development and regulatory compliance. He currently provides leadership to Talen's CIP and Ops & Planning Reliability Standard SMEs and generating facilities and was instrumental in the integration of the several “pre-Talen Energy” disparate business units resulting in one healthy, unified fleet-wide program. Mr. Poluch is a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a Forward Observer and Artillery Surveyors in the 40th Field Artillery Unit in Europe. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University.

Brian AllenCIP Assurance Advisor, NERC

Brian serves as a CIP Assurance Advisor in the NERC Grid Assurance group. In this position, Brian works with the Assurance Team to provide oversight, guidance, and coordination in managing programs and processes to monitor, review, and evaluate program effectiveness of the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) Enterprise implementation of risk-based compliance monitoring and adherence to the NERC Rules of Procedure, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Program, and approved delegation agreements. Brian joined the NERC CIP Assurance team in January 2019. Prior to NERC, Brian served as a Cyber Security Specialist at Georgia Systems Operation Corporation. In this role, Brian worked within Security Operations focusing on governance, risk, and compliance of the CIP Program.

Hassan HayatRegional Transmission Planning Manager, AEP

Hassan Hayat is a Regional Transmission Planning Manager at American Electric Power. He manages competitive transmission planning functions within and outside AEP's footprint. Hassan has been with AEP since 2011 and has held various positions. Most recently, Hassan was the Modeling Supervisor for the Eastern AEP region. In that role, he was instrumental in developing and implementing AEP's enhanced process around the FAC-008 standard. Hassan has a bachelor's and a master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from The Ohio State University and Kansas State University respectively. He holds a Professional Engineer license in the state of Ohio.

David QuierDirector, Asset Management, PPL Electric Utilities

David oversees the transmission and substation system and assets related to planning, system reliability, standards, strategic initiatives, regulatory policy, special projects and capital development. Quier has been instrumental in helping to refocus the distribution system automation strategy to improve reliability performance. This includes directing the efforts to fully deploy smart grid switches on PPL Electric Utilities' power grid. Before coming to PPL, Quier was a project engineer at F.L. Smidth, where he managed new mill installations in three different South American countries. Prior to that, he was a power plant engineer at WorleyParsons. Quier received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University, a Masters of Business Administration from the Pennsylvania State University and is a licensed professional engineer. He is currently a member of several industry organizations, including the North American Transmission Forum, the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, and WIRES Group. He also sits on the board for Equi-librium, a non-profit that provides individuals with the opportunity to reach their highest potential through the benefits of horse-related activities and therapies. He is also a member of REACH, PPL's Business Resource Group that focuses on improving the well-being of differently-abled employees.

Joe PilchTransmission Planning Engineer, Duquesne Light Company

Joe has been employed at Duquesne Light Company (DLC) since 2015, where he joined the team as a Transmission Planning Engineer. It was at this time Joe was introduced to the DLC FAC-008 program and became one of DLC's subject matter experts. Joe now oversees DLC's FAC-008 program in his role as Manager of Transmission Planning & Interconnection. Prior to his time at DLC, Joe worked for a naval contractor responsible for designing and delivering nuclear propulsion plants for the United State Navy. Joe received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and is a Licensed Professional Engineer.

Rob KoziyDirector, Cyber Security & Compliance, Open Systems International (OSI)

Rob Koziy joined Open Systems International Inc. (OSI) in 2012 as the Director of Cyber Security & Compliance, responsible for supporting OSI customers and employees in following industry best practices for cyber security. Rob graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Lakehead University and has 25 years of experience in the U.S. and Canadian Telecommunications industry developing software and electronic products for major equipment suppliers such as Nortel Networks, ADC Telecommunications, Tyco Electronics.

Jeffrey J. Sweet, CISSPDirector, Security Assessment, AEP

Jeffrey Sweet has over 30 years' experience in Information Technology and Security. Jeffrey has worked in a variety of industries to includ the U.S. government, finance, education, energy, insurance, and manufacturing.

Jeffrey is Director of Security Assessments at American Electric Power (AEP). His organization is responsible for Penetration Testing, Application Security Testing, Third-Party Risk Governance, Vulnerability Management, and Security Architecture and Engineering. Jeffrey also manages a joint business relationship with Fortress Information Security (Asset to Vendor Network (A2V)) which provides energy utility companies a low-cost means of obtaining security risk assessments for their third party suppliers and vendors.

Tobias WhitneyVice President Security Solutions, Fortress Information Security

At Fortress, Tobias Whitney leads sales and marketing as the Vice President of Energy Security Solutions. He is a recognized leader in control systems security solutions with over 20 years of critical infrastructure security experience, which includes founding the security practice at Burns & McDonnell and a focus on regulatory compliance, supply chain, and cloud security.

Most recently, Whitney spent two years as Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), evaluating risks in supply chain cybersecurity for utilities, developing solutions to address security architecture for utility cloud-based solutions, as well as researching emerging technologies, such as electric vehicle charging and supply chain security.

Banna UnderlandTechnical Writer & Training Coordinator, SERC

Ms. Underland joined SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC) in 2016 as the Technical Writer. Because of her experience as an Instructional Designer, she is responsible for developing training for corporate compliance topics. She assumed the role of Training Coordinator in 2019. Ms. Underland has been a Technical Communicator and Instructional Designer for more than 30 years. In addition to her time at SERC, her employment experience includes service in the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician and instructor; and instructional design and technical training for both the metrology and software industries. Ms. Underland has been part of SERC's Entity Assistance program development since its inception. Entity Assistance is part of SERC's Outreach & Training department, which Ms. Underland joined in 2019. Ms. Underland earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Montreat College. She is a Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC).
