31 years of festival fun! With more than 120 local acts here at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium, Parlor in the Round on opening night, over 50 workshops for all ages, Folk Week, late night shows at Williwaw and 49th State, a dinner show at Charlou, a contra dance at the Student Union, and our famous Banjo Contest, there’s something for everyone at this year’s Festival, many of which are free! This wonderful opportunity allows folks of all ages to listen, experience, and participate in live music through performing, volunteering, hosting a workshop, or joining in the many jams that echo through the Lobby or around town. Whether at the Festival on campus or around town, you’ll find plenty of friends, old & new, sharing their talents and warming our winter evenings.

For Folk Fest 31, we are thrilled and proud to be bringing up THREE fabulous guest artists! We dipped into some genres that haven’t been heard in recent Festivals, and we think you’ll enjoy some new sounds.

We especially want to thank our Major Sponsors - the UAA CONCERT BOARD and ALASKA AIRLINES - for their continued support! And to all of our other Commercial Contributors who have supported us with ads in the program, thank you, too! We are also very grateful for a special donation from Steve and Debbie Hinds to support the addition of a staff member to the festival team. We will be making further announcements about this, so please stay tuned!

Most of all, thank YOU, the folks who become members of the Anchorage Folk Festival, who attend, and who volunteer time to help out backstage, in the lobby, and putting on the Festival. None of this would be possible without your generous contributions. THANK YOU!!

It’s easy to join our wonderful Festival community online or at our table in the lobby. Then, come to our Annual Business Meeting, Sunday, January 26, 2020, at 5 pm in PSB 166. All members are welcome. See you there, and enjoy the 31st Annual Anchorage Folk Festival!

Sincere appreciation to Levi Werner for his generous donation of our 2020 AFF artwork, as seen on the cover of this program. Levi recently graduated from UAA with a BFA in printmaking and plans to live in Anchorage Alaska for a while longer, teaching and doing what he can to contribute to the art community on a local level. Drawing has been at the core of Levi’s art practice from an early age. Since 2015 he has focused his creative energies on creating art through the process of printmaking. The combination of printmaking and drawing allows a seemingly endless expanse for creative expression and investigation.

Sherri Hadley was an enduring supporter of Alaska music and dance. Please join us in the lobby to place your bid to carry on Sherri’s legacy. Her friends have gifted the Festival with these mementos of her love for music…

Lanikai Concert Ukulele, Model LKP-C • Koa body with abalone binding and a rosewood fingerboard on a mahogany neck. In fine playable shape with no visible cracks & working tuners. Made in Indonesia, comes with original blue soft case. Bidding to begin at $75.

Kentucky Mandolin A-Style • She’s got a little history - a major repair to a broken neck, but she’s been repaired & tunes up nicely. No tag or serial number found, but there’s a nice solid foam black case. We’ve put on a fresh set of strings & sit back to listen. Bidding to begin at $200.

Violin • Violin appears to be turn of 20th Century vintage and plays just like a perfect old-time fiddle should! Its condition is typical of such an age, with some open seams & repair, but it tunes well & sounds great. Some of the fine tuners could use repair. This fine fiddle comes with a light foam black case and two bows. The first is a carbon-fiber Codabow Aspire in good shape. The second is a Brasil pernambuco bow. We’ll set a minimum bid on opening day… stay tuned!

Hailing from Greenville, Georgia, Jontavious Willis grew up singing Gospel music at the Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church with his grandfather. Since an early age, he had the talent and passion for the music and the ability to sharpen his skills fast.

At the age of 14, he came across a YouTube video of Muddy Waters playing “Hoochie Coochie Man” and was instantly hooked on the blues.

He got his much-needed break from the living legend Taj Mahal, who described him as the “Wonderboy” and “the Wunderkind.” In 2015, Mahal asked Willis to play on stage with him. That appearance resulted in a roaring response from the audience and led Willis to bigger stages and broader opportunities, including an opening slot at select shows along the TajMo tour, featuring his musical mentors Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’.

In 2019, Willis released Spectacular Class, with GRAMMY award-winning artists Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ as Executive Producer and Producer. Through original lyrics written by Willis himself, the gifted musician delivers a timeless album that features dynamic vocals and all types of blues: Delta, Piedmont, Texas, and Gospel. His stand-out fingerpicking, flat-picking, and slide prowess are also on display.

Many fans of Willis regard him as an old soul. His style of playing the instruments and his voice touches the very roots of country blues. He brings back the true soul of the music. A newspaper headline once called him a “70-year-old bluesman in a 20-year-old body.”

We are thrilled to welcome Jontavious Willis to the Anchorage Folk Festival!

Jack Broadbent

Hailed as “The new master of the slide guitar” by the Montreux Jazz Festival and “The real thang” by the legendary Bootsy Collins, Jack Broadbent has spent the past year wowing international audiences with his unique blend of virtuosic acoustic and slide guitar, and poignant folk and blues inspired vocals.

Born and raised in rural England, Jack grew up listening to artists such as John Lee Hooker, Peter Green, Robert Johnson, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, to name a few. These legends of rock, blues, roots and folk influenced Jack’s distinctive song writing, singing and performance style, which have a depth and heart that defies strict musical genres. Jack‘s performances exude a warmth, humour and energy that has electrified audiences worldwide.

Following a string of successful shows opening for legendary artists, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Hallyday, Robben Ford, and Tony Joe White, Jack headlined his own whirlwind international tour, playing sold out shows for music lovers in Europe, New Zealand, Japan, the US and Canada.

With three full length albums under his belt, tens of millions of YouTube views and a devoted army of fans, his career is going full throttle. Now Anchorage gets to hear him live on the AFF stage, and in concert at 49th State Brew. Co!

Let’s gather at Parlor In The Round. Borrowing from the guitar pull tradition of porches and campfires, songwriters from all walks of Alaskan life (and some beyond) will trade songs and stories as they are inspired by each other.

Tradition is cast aside as the musicians dive into collaborations, jocular inventions and premeditated musings all based on written submissions from the audience.

Kevin Worrell draws out the strength and vulnerability of each artist while holding the crowd closely throughout the performance.

One of the particular goals of the Lehrman Trust is to enhance musical education of young people, and toward this end, a very generous gift to the Festival was made. Bandleader Chris Stafford recorded a full-length album of Cajun tunes with Feufollet at the age of 12. The band has been a staple of the Lafayette, LA music scene ever since. Young and vibrant, this Southwest Louisiana band takes Cajun, honky-tonk, and string-band music as their starting point, and keeps an open mind about where their song craft will lead them. On Two Universes, their first studio album in over five years, Feufollet proves their Cajun roots don’t define them as much as propel them forward; whispers of the swamp and its time-honored waltzes trigger a modern and broad musical imagination, one that finds equal expression in blues, old-time, country ballads, rock’n’roll, whatever, all for the sake of the song.

Cajun, country, and rock’n’roll all began as homespun enterprises, by musicians tinkering with inherited melodies until new sounds were struck. Feufollet keeps that experimental spirit alive and well with their diverse musical palette, edgy arrangements, and pop-song sensibilities.

Feufollet has been nominated for Best Cajun Artist for Offbeat Magazine’s 2019 Best of the Beat Award. Catch them at one of their Anchorage Folk Festival appearances to hear the magic live!

• Each contestant will have up to five minutes to play and ideally should plan to perform two instrumental numbers within that five minutes total (eek, no singing, please!). This will be on the amphitheater stage.

• RULE: Players can have one accompanist, to play basically a rhythm part, such as guitar or string bass (not another banjo, please!). The accompanist is there for musical support, but not to play solo or duet parts or in any way overshadow the banjo contestant.

The banjo is a uniquely versatile and truly American traditional instrument, and we want to celebrate the many banjo players (and especially banjo students) out there who rarely get the credit and encouragement they deserve. We hope to attract all sorts of banjo players and new fans to celebrate the talents of Alaska’s banjo virtuosos during the Anchorage Folk Festival’s 11th annual banjo contest. Time to dust off that banjo in the corner!

Criteria for Style categories

Execution (40 points): Timing, clarity, tone quality, being in tune, dynamics and finesse, degree of difficulty. (No, we are not going to execute any banjo players, even if tempted!)

Arrangement (40 points): Musical appeal of songs played, sense of melody, originality, subtlety, and taste (or what passes for taste, in banjo music).

Spirit (10 points): The music should have life and feeling; not be listless or dragging.

Overall impression (10 points): The general effect of the performance, including factors not otherwise mentioned above. Is the audience thrilled, or chilled?

Banjo Joke guidelines

• In the Banjo Joke category, similar criteria will be applied.

• All jokes must be G-rated, like the movies, with a one-minute time limit, and one-joke maximum. (Jokes will be screened by a designated AFF staffer to ensure the G rating.)

• Contestants can enter the joke category and a musical category.

Judges Deliberation and Awards

All contestants should stay together until the final results are tabulated, because there might be TIES in one or more categories that need to be resolved by a play- off. That means that those players would need to each play one more song for the judges to determine the winner.

Judges will confer to determine the winners. During that time, ALL contestants are requested to gather together on stage…we might have them all play a simple tune!

At the conclusion, winners will be announced, prizes awarded, and Certificates of Performance provided. Of course, all participants are also encouraged to become members of the Anchorage Folk Festival, and to consider volunteering too.

Special thanks to Dick Sanchis (Local Burger Man), who helped us start this contest and for supporting it each year. He was a true Champion of Banjo Music.

Thanks also to businesses providing gift certificates, to the judges, our wonderful emcee, and other dedicated volunteers helping run this contest.
