본 기능은 Two disc type 의 RB204 METPOL II 에 적용된다. Two disc type 의 경우 일반적으로 사용자

들이 오른 쪽이나 왼쪽 Disc 에 Automatic polishing/grinding head 를 적용할 때 수동으로 Head 를 돌려

위치를 잡고 고정 하여야 하나 본 System 은 약간의 Touch 로 정해진 위치로 회전하여 자동으로

Knocking 되는 System 으로 별도의 고정 조작이 필요 없는 기능이다.

Mounting Press Introduction

Mounting 은 시편의 형상이나 크기에 구애받지 않고 Grinding 및 Polishing 을 하기위한 준비단계에 주

목적이 있고 시편 준비 과정에서 모서리나 가장자리가 손상을 받지 않기 위해 사용한다.

Mounting 후에는 시편을 분류하기 위한 이름이나 Laboratory code 등의 기입이 필수적이다.

시편의 크기가 증가함에 따라 시편의 편평도를 유지하기가 어려워 진다.

가장 적당한 시편의 면적은 1/4in2 이하이며 가능하다면최대 4 in

2를 넘지 않아야 한다.

시편의 두께는 Mounting 후 Polishing 이나 Grinding 시 시편이 빠져 나오지 않은 정도의 두께를

가져야 한다.

Mounting Methods

Mounting 방법은 시편의 미세조직에 영향을 주어서는 안 된다.

기계적 변형이나 열을 가장 영향이 큰 인자로서 가능한 발생하는 요인을 줄여야 한다.

Mounting medium은 시편의 경도 및 연삭성을 고려하여 선택하여야 한다.

Mounting medium과 시편 사이 경도나 연삭성 차이가 큰 경우에는 Differential polishing characteristics,

Relief 및 Poor edge preservation을 유발하게 된다.

또한 Mounting medium은 Polishing 및 Etching solutions에 화학적으로 안전하여야 한다.

Mounting methods 는 다음 3 가지가 많이 사용된다.

Compression mounting (Hot mounting) Cold mounting (Castable mounting) Mechanical fixing mounting

Compression mounting (Hot mounting)는 빠르고 매우 손 쉬운 방법으로 가장 널리 사용되고 있다.

이 방법은 Mounting press 를 사용하는데 대부부의 소요 시간은 가열 및 냉각에 소요되는 시간이다.

Compression mounting 시간 및 온도는 Resin 에 따라 결정되는데 일반적으로 10 ~30 분 정도의

시간과 150°C ~170°C 정도의 온도에서 이루어 진다.

Hot mounting 에 사용되는 R&B mounting press 의 Mold 는 Mounting 시편에 Sharp edge 가 생기지

않도록 설계되었다.

Cold mounting (Castable mounting) 은 Mounting pressing 기기가 필요 없는 방법으로 Pressing 압력이

필요 없으며 열도 별로 나지 않는 방법이다.

이 방법은 낮은 온도에서 다량의 시편을 준비하는데 유리하게 사용된다.

Castable resins은 Cross-linked polymers를 사용하며 시편에 따라 다양한 종류의 Resin이 사용된다.

Mechanical fixing mounting 은 Thin foil 들과 같은 특별한 형상의 시편에 사용하는 것으로

Scaled sample holder 는 박판에 사용하는 가장 일반적인 Holder 이다.







Classification of Mounting Press of R&B 첫 번째로 Mold quantities 수로서 I 및 II는 Mold의 수량을 의미한다.

두 번째는 Frame type으로 T 및 S로 T는 Table top, S는 Stand alone type frame을 의미한다.

Introduction

큰 크기의 시편을 시험하기 편리하게 Cutting 하는 것은 5 가지 시편 준비 공정 중 하나이다.

공정 중 Cutting 작업은 육안 및 현미경 분석을 위한 가장 중요한 시편 준비 단계이다.

R&B 는 지난 20 년간 Abrasive Wheel 및 Diamond Wheel 을 포한한 다양한 종류의 Cutter 를 공급해

METSAW Series Diamond cutter

분동을 이용한 중력을 사용하여 하중을 가하는 방법으로서 하중은 분동의 가감으로 조절한다.

Cutting fluid 는 Rotating blade 에 의하여 Reservoir 로부터 공급된다.

사용 가능한 Cutting blade 는 4~ 7 inches diameter 로서 half inch arbor size 가 적용된다.

Cutting wheel 은 크게 Abrasive wheel 및 Diamond wheel 로 대별된다.

Abrasive cut-off wheel 로 사용하는 대표적인 재료는 Aluminum oxide 및 SiC 두 종류가 있다.

SiC 및 Alumina wheel 은 상대적으로 가격이 저렴하나 Diamond wheel 에 비해 소모성이 크다.

Alumina 는 주로 Ferrous 에 사용하고 SiC 는 Non-ferrous 재질에 사용한다.

Diamond wheel

미세조직 관찰용 시편 절단 방법 중 가장 적절한 방법은 ‘Abrasive wet cutting’ 방법이며 Diamond wheel

을 사용하는 것이 가장 바람직하다. Diamond 연마재를 이용한 Wheel 로서 비싼 반면 장기간

사용이 가능하다. Diamond Wheel 은 절단 시에 주기적으로 Dressing 을 해주어야 한다.

입자의 접착밀도에 따라 두 종류로 분류되는데 High concentration diamond wheel 은 상대적으로 무른 재

료의 절단에, Low concentration diamond wheel 은 단단한 재료의 절단에 사용된다.

Wheel 의 두께는 대략 0.2~ 0.5mm 이며 외경은 3”~ 7″를 주로 사용한다.

▪ Mounting Consumables & Accessories

Mounting 방법은 크게 두 가지로서 Hot compression mounting 방법과 Cold mounting 방법이 있다.

시편의 재질과 사용 목적에 따라 이 두 가지의 방법을 선택적으로 사용한다.

Hot mounting 은 Mounting press 를 이용하는 방법이며 보편적으로 Phenol 수지가 많이 사용된다.

특히 Acryl 수지는 탁월한 투명성 때문에 많이 사용되고 있다.

Cold mounting 은 Castable 수지를 이용하는 방법으로 사용하는 수지는 Acryl, Epoxy 수지 등이 있다.

이 외에도 전자현미경 사용 시 도전이 가능한 전도체 분말이 섞인 수지도 사용한다

Hot Mounting Mounting Press 를 이용한 Mounting 방법으로 매우 양호한 Mounting 시편을 얻을 수 있으나

고온, 고압에서 문제가 생기는 재료에는 적합하지 않다.

최근에는 환경과 안전을 고려한 Phenol free resin 을 사용하기도 한다.

Cold Mounting

Resin 과 Hardener 를 이용하여 단 시간에 대량제작이 가능하며 상온에서 가능하다.

열이나 압력이 가해지면 안 되는 재료에 적용한다.

Epoxy resin 의 경우 변형이 극히 적으며 Fast cure Acrylic 의 경우는 10 분 이내에 경화가 가능하다.

▪ Grinding Consumables and Accessories

절단작업에서 발생되는 손상을 제거하기 위한 가장 중요한 시편 준비 작업이다.

초기 Grit size 는 절단 시 발생된 손상 깊이와 표면 거칠기에 많이 좌우된다.

Grinding 시 열 발생을 최소화하고 Paper 의 수명을 연장하기 위하여 Wet grinding 을 이용한다.

Wet grinding 은 눈 메움 현상을 완화하여 주며 떨어져 나온 마찰입자 및 절단조각들을 제거해 주기 때

문에 연마 입자들이 시편 표면에 묻는 경향을 최소화 하는 장점을 가지고 있다.

Grinding 의 방향은 각 단계마다 45-90 도 사이로 변화를 주어야 한다. 수동 Grinding 에서는 전 단계 에

서 생성된 Scratch 의 제거 유무를 육안으로 확인하여야 하며 자동 Polishing 장비는 일정한 방향성을

갖는 Scratch 형상을 확인하여야 한다.

Fixation method on Sand paper & Polishing cloth ▪ Introduction

Grinding 이나 Polishing 을 하는 경우 Disc 에 Sand paper 나 Polishing cloth 를 설치하여야 한다.

초기에는 고정 Ring 을 이용하여 설치하였으나 Ring 의 탈/부착이 번거로운 단점이 있다.

이 단점을 보완하기 위하여 뒷면에 접착제를 바른 PSA(Pressure sensitive adhesive) type 이 개발되어

고정 Ring 사용의 단점을 보완하였으나 이번에는 Disc 로부터 Paper 나 Cloth 의 제거가 어렵고

Disc 에 접착제 찌꺼기가 남는 단점을 가지게 되었다.

이에 Magnetic type 이 개발되어 접착제의 단점을 보완 하였으나 Paper 나 Cloth 뒷면에 자석에 붙는

Steel 이나 고무자석 처리가 되어야 하는 경제적인 문제가 대두 되었다.

근년에 들어 상기 모든 단점을 보완하기 위한 방법으로 자가흡착 기능을 가지는 Disc 가 개발되어 매끈

한 면을 가지는 모든 Paper 나 Cloth 의 탈/부착이 용이하게 되었다.

▪ Fixation method 종류

I. 고정 Ring 을 이용한 방법

가장 고전적인 방법으로 뒷면 처리가 안된 Plain back Paper 나 Cloth 를 고정용 Ring 을 사용하여 Disc

에 장착하는 방법으로 탈/부착이 번거로우며 자동 Grinder/Polisher 의 사용에 제약이 따른다.

또한 Paper 나 Cloth 가 균일하게 Disc 에 접촉되지 않는 경우가 발생하며 사용 후 건조에 따른 뒤틀림

현상이 발생하기도 한다. 또한 Grid #를 바꿀 때 마다 고정 Ring 을 세척하여야 연마제의 혼입을 막을

수 있다.

가장 경제적인 방법이나 많은 단점이 따른다.

II. PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) 방법

기존 Disc 사용이 가능하며 Sand paper 나 Polishing cloth 의 뒷면에 접착제를 Coating 하는 방법으로

고정 Ring 의 단점을 보완하였으며 균일한 접촉을 보장하며 건조에 따른 뒤틀림도 개선되었다. 그러나

사용 후 Paper 나 Cloth 의 제거가 불편하며 접착제 찌꺼기가 Disc 에 남는 불편을 초래한다. 또한 접착

제를 도포함에 따라 가격 상승이 불가피하다.

III. Magnetic 방법

자력을 이용하여 Paper 나 Cloth 를 Disc 에 장착하는 방법으로 PSA 단점을 보완하였다.

이 방법은 기존의 Disc 에 자력을 가진 Rubber disc (Magnetic fixation disc)를 붙인 Magnetic disc 가 필요

하다 (한번 장착으로 계속 사용)

교환에 따른 시간 절약과 균일한 접촉면을 유지하며 용이하게 탈 부착이 가능하여 많이 사용하는 방법

이다. 또한 Carrier 부분의 Stiffness 중가로 인하여 건조 후 뒤틀림 현상이 배제되어 수명이 다할 때까

지 정상적으로 사용이 가능하다.

이 방법에 사용하는 Paper 나 Cloth 의 뒷면은 자석에 붙는 처리를 하여야 하며 주로 자석에 붙는 얇은

Stainless plate 나 얇은 고무자석 Plate (MD FUGO)가 사용된다.

그러나 Stainless plate 에 Paper 나 Cloth 를 붙이는 방법은 역시 접착제를 사용하므로 한번 사용하고

Stainless plate 를 폐기하지 않고 재활용을 한다면 PSA 탈/부착에 따르는 단점이 남게 된다.

사용 상 편리하지만 Paper 나 Cloth 뒷면에 자석에 붙는 처리 비용이 증가하게 된다.

IV. Gecko Plate 방법

모든 단점을 제거한 최근의 방법으로 경제적이면서도 실용적인 방법이다.

기존의 Disc 에 자가흡착구조를 가지는 Plate (Gecko plate)를 붙인 Gecko disc 를 사용한다.

Magnetic Disc 와 같이 한번 장착으로 계속 사용 가능하며 오염이 되면 흐르는 물로 세척하는 과정으로

원상태를 유지할 수 있다.

따라서 하나의 Disc 에 다양한 Grid No.의 Sand paper 나 Polishing cloth 의 사용이 가능하다.

이 방법에 사용하는 Paper 나 Cloth 의 뒷면은 매끈한 비닐처리를 한 상태이나 Magnetic 방법에 비하여

저렴한 편이다.

Sand paper 100~200 장의 수명을 가지며, 연마찌꺼기가 양호하게 배출되도록 설계되었다.

Sand paper 의 단점인 Edge rounding 을 최대한 피할 수 있어 평평도가 중요한 경우 사용되며 대량

시편의 경우 Sand paper 의 잦은 교체로 인한 시간을 줄일 수 있다. Sand paper 100 장 정도의

가격으로 교체에 따른 시간을 고려하면 매우 경제적으로 사용이 가능하다.

기존 방법의 연마와 Diamond Disc 를 사용할 때의 비교로서

시간에 따른 연마특성이 변함이 없다.

GENERAL

중간 단계의 polishing 에 많이 사용하는 Cloth 로 인조섬유를 사용한

Non-woven type 으로서 Nap 이 적으며 Glass 등 단단한 재료에도

사용하며 15~6um 연마재에 사용한다. 빠른 Polishing 이 가능하다.

FINE

마지막 단계 Polishing 에 사용되며 Nap 이 많고 Cotton 에 0.02”~0.03”

Rayon flock 을 첨가하여 제작되며 10% Rayon 에 90% Cotton 전후이다.

두께는 대략 0.04” 정도로 3um 이하 연마재에 사용되며 주로 Plastic,

무른 비철 재료에 사용한다.

NYLON

Polyester nylon cloth 로서 Nap 이 없으며 중간 Polishing 에 사용된다.

매우 질기고 단단한 재료의

평평도 유지 및 Relief 방지에 사용하며 15~3um 연마재에 사용한다

ALPHALAP

Cotton 에 Rayon 을 섞은 것으로 적당한 Nap 을 가지며 Fine polishing 에

사용하며 3um 이하 연마재에 사용한다. Fine 과 유사한 Polishing

cloth 이다.

WOOL

100% Wool 로 직조되며 모든 재료에 적용 가능하나 특별히 매우 무른

재료에 적합하여 Light metal 에 많이 사용하며 모든 종류의 연마재에

Polishing Powder & Abrasives

Alumina Powder and Slurry

Alumina 입자는 Fine Polishing 에 사용되는데 일반적으로

사용하는 크기는 1, 0.3, 0.05 micron 이며 Suspension 또는

Powder 상태로 사용한다.

종류는 두 가지로 Gamma 및 Alpha 가 있다.

Gamma(MOHS 경도 8.0) 는 Alpha (MOHS 경도 9.0)보다

약간 무르다.

Gamma Alumina 는 Cubic Crystal 구조인 반면에 Alpha

Alumina 는 Hexagonal 구조를 가지고 있다.

Alumina 는 자체의 우수한 경도와 내구성으로 인해 주로

기계적인

Polishing 연마제로서 사용된다. Alumina 는 무른 Gamma (MOHS 8) 또는 경한 Alpha (MOHS 9, 2000 HV)

phase 으로 되어 있으며 주로 Fine polishing 에 사용되는데 그 이유는 SiC 와는 달리 높은 경도와 내구성

을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이 입자는 낮은 Cutting 속도와 높은 손상으로 인하여

Metallographic applications 에서 이상적이지는 않다는 점에 유의하여야 한다. 특히 0.05 ㎛은 잔류 응력

제거용으로 사용한다.

Suspension(Slurry)으로 공급되며 주로 CMP 공정에 사용된다.

Diamond Abrasives

Suspension, Paste, Gel Type 으로 공급되며 연마특성이 우수하며 손상율이 적다.

Diamond 입자는 가장 단단한 재료로서 Cubic 결정구조를 가지며 손상율이 적은 장점이 있다.

Monocrystalline 과 Polycrystalline 으로 나뉘며 Polycrystalline Diamond 는 Synthetic 과 Natural

Monocrystalline Diamond 와 비교하여 높은 Cutting 속도, 우수한 입자크기의 분포, 고강도, Blocky

Shaped, Hexagonal micro-crystallites, 거친 표면, Mono-Crystalline Diamond 보다 300% 이상인 표면적,

마찰저항이 없는 방향성 등 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있다.

Diamond 연마재의 형태는 주로 Suspension, Paste, Gel type 등으로 생산 보급되고 있다.

Polishing 시 Diamond 의 양은 많은 양을 사용하지 않아도 높은 연마속도를 얻을 수 있으며,

속도를 내기 위한 양의 증가는 Grinding 을 위한 매우 거친 사용을 제외하고는 거의 무의미하다.

Polishing Debris 의 후속 Polishing 에 대한 영향은 그리 높지 않다.

Ultra Polishing Film

2 Step 으로 Polishing 완결

작은 크기의 연마재를 Nano binder 를 이용하여 약 20-80 um 로 Aggregate 시킨 후 구형으로 만들어 Film

에 접착한 제품으로 Grinding 및 Polishing 의 새로운 시도로 개발된 특허제품이다.

사용 연마재는 Aluminium Oxide, Silicon Carbide, Diamond 등이 가능하며 기타 연마제도 가능하다

일반적으로 3mil (75um) Polyester Film 에 연마재가 Grain Type 으로 Doping 된 형태로 일반 Lapping Film

에 비하여 3 배 이상의 수명을 가진다. 연마재의 크기는 1um, 3um 두 가지를 공급한다.

기본적으로 8”, 10”, 12” Diameter PSA back(접착제) 및 Magnetic(자석식) Back Type 으로 제공된다.

현재 공급 가능한 제품은 Diamond 1um 및 3um 으로 1um 의 용도는 매우 단단한 재질- WC, Ceramic,
