This handbook has been developed as a guide for parents/guardians/carers and students about
matters relating to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program at Sarina State High School. Each
family should thoroughly understand the content and follow all procedures.
Introduction
Sarina State High School’s commitment to digital learning has not changed from that of previous
years. Our school values the importance of being digitally connected with our community and that
we offer our students the best possible learning experiences with digital devices.
With the concept of the BYOD program at Sarina State High School in 2019, we plan to impact
student academic improvement, engagement and attitude to learning as well as afford our students
opportunities to further develop 21st century learning skills.
After extensive research and consultation, the school staff see great benefits of increased individual
access to an iPad in the junior grades, as having the potential of greater student engagement, creativity
and learning outcomes. In 2019, the BYO iPad program is offered to all students in year 7, 8 and 9.
Cost to Families
There will be a cost of $50 for your Bring Your Own Device. The following table outlines
what is included for this cost:
Upgrade and maintenance of network and switches
Upgrade, maintenance and service of printer network systems and print credit
School technician support (connecting to the Wi-Fi service, installation of school licensed
software, troubleshooting support)
Software access and maintenance of licensing for BYO devices:
o Clickview online (24/7 access to resource library of educational videos through
any approved BYO device)
o Microsoft Office Suite 2013 (word, excel, powerpoint, publisher)
o Microsoft Office 365 (24/7 access to school email from any approved BYO device)
Should you be unable to provide a device due to financial difficulties there are a limited number of
school-owned iPads/tablets available to hire. Please contact the school on (07) 4943 8111 for more
information.
2
Software and Applications
Installation and maintenance of personal software and Applications are the responsibility of the
family. Genuine versions of software need to be installed to ensure updates. Students will need to
have the latest operating system iOS installed. Updates should be completed at home and a full
backup of your iPad is encouraged beforehand to avoid possible loss of data. For information on
how to backup and install the latest operating system, please see the ‘How To’ documents listed on
the Sarina State High School website.
Students will need to download Microsoft Word and Powerpoint from the app store. Any additional
apps needed for 2019 will be advised at the beginning of Term 1. Most apps will be downloaded at
school using the school software and wi-fi.
Microsoft Office 365 All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple free copies of the
Microsoft Office 2016 Suite to their personal device.
Students who want the free software will need an active Managed Internet Service (MIS) login,
school email account and password — those who don‘t have these should contact their school’s
MIS Administrator or class teacher. The administrator will help students activate their MIS login.
Currently, MS Office Suite 2016 is available for students’ personal equipment only — not
equipment which is part of a school network.
Charging of devices
Students will be expected to bring a fully charged iPad to school each day. The power supply will
not be required to be brought to school. Leaving power supplies at home reduces the weight of the
equipment student’s transport to and from school and reduces the likelihood of damage and/or
loss.
3
School Wi-Fi and Mobile 3/4G
Approved Apple iPad devices that meet the outlined specifications will recognise the schools Wi-Fi
and students will be able to connect. Standard EQ internet security filters will screen usage and
access. Students must agree to follow the ICT Responsible Use Policy in relation to internet use.
3G and 4G compatible iPad devices are suitable for purchase and use, however, the school strongly
suggests that the SIM card is removed or the 3/4G ability is disabled whilst at school as
this function when activated allows students to bypass the EQ internet security filters. Sarina State
High School will take no responsibility for the content accessed by students using 3/4G facility on
their personally owned devices. Any connection which is not through the Managed Internet Service
contravenes school policy and consequences will be enforced.
The iPads can be configured to connect to a home wireless or wired network. This configuration
can be performed as with a normal iPad.
Apple ID
Parents will be required to provide a separate Apple ID for each student as the legal age for setting
up an Apple ID account is 13 years or over. Students are encouraged to use their school email
address. (eg [email protected])
Mobile Device Management (MDM)
Students will be required to enrol their devices into the school’s Mobile Device Management
(MDM) system at the beginning of the school year.
Enrolling into the MDM system will enable the school to provide school purchased apps for
students and enable the school to reset a user’s forgotten password. MDM also provides a simple
way to enable user access to school services while ensuring devices are properly configured.
Printing
Students will be able to connect their approved BYO Apple iPad device via their web browser to
access printers. Students receive $5 printing credit each term. Additional credit can be purchased by
the student from the school office if required.
4
Repairs and Maintenance
All maintenance for the IT device, operating system, software and/or apps purchased by the family
are the responsibility of the family. Families should ensure quick maintenance turnaround for
student devices.
School Technical Support
If you run into a problem, we advise students to see the schools IT Technician who will attempt to
diagnose the fault. If this is not able to be resolved by the schools IT Technician, they can recommend
a course of action for repair (e.g. warranty claim, insurance claim etc.)
ICT Responsible Use Policy (RUP)
The Sarina State High School ICT Responsible Use Policy is included on Page 16. This document
requires reading and completion by both participant student and their parent/guardian/carer upon
enrolment into the BYOD program.

Security and Insurance
While the BYO iPads will be stored in classrooms during break times, lockers are available for hire
at a cost of $5 per term. Parents/guardians/carers are encouraged to seek personal insurance. Check
with your preferred insurance company (or your iPad seller) about personal insurance at home and,
to and from school, for your iPad.
5
Damage in Transit
All iPads will require a protective sleeve or case when being transported. This will be an additional
cost but is well worth the outlay as it is the best form of insurance for iPads and will often protect
the device from impacts and accidents, especially when these sleeve type cases are also inside a
school bag.
Damage at School
Teachers at school will monitor all devices and rules are in place to prevent foreseeable problems
and damage, however, from time to time, accidents may occur.
If damage is caused by deliberate or careless actions of a student (owner or others), the costs of
repair will be passed onto those involved and necessary behaviour consequences may apply. The
decision around the responsibility for repair costs is at the discretion of Sarina State High School.
Students are strongly encouraged to bring their iPad into each class and NOT leave them in their
school bags.
General Care
Students are responsible for the general care of the iPad.
General Precautions
It is recommended that food or drink should not be next to the iPad when in use.
Cords, cables, and removable storage must be inserted into, and removed from the iPad
carefully.
The iPad should never be left in an unsupervised area.
Students are responsible for ensuring the battery is charged for each school day.
Transporting the iPad
The guidelines below should be followed when transporting the iPad:
The iPad should always be within a protective case when carried.
Some carrying cases can hold other objects such as clipboards and exercise books but these
must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the iPad
screen.
6
Screen Care
The screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. They are particularly susceptible to
damage from excessive pressure and be costly to repair. Please follow the guidelines below:
Do not lean on the top of the iPad.
Do not place anything near the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.
Do not place anything in the carry case that will press against the cover.
Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.
Damage/Repair of iPad screen is the responsibility of the owner
(student/parent/guardian/carer) unless is has been caused by deliberate or careless actions of
another student. These costs will then be passed on.
Battery Maintenance
The battery life of portable devices is improving as technological enhancements are made. To get
the most out of the battery life of iPads, follow these simple tips:
Reduce the screen brightness to a comfortable level.
Disable connectivity such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
Close all running apps and lock the iPad screen when not in use.

Q and A
What size iPad is required, for most classes and for graphics?
Device minimum specifications for students in general
studies:
-: iPad Air 1, Air 2, iPad 5th Gen or iPad 6th Gen
Protective Case
Storage: Preferable 64GB
iOS: 12 or most current
as of January 2019.
How can I tell what model iPad I have?
To tell what model iPad you have, you can check on the back of the iPad for the VERSION number. There will be an A followed by 4 numbers. EG A1822 (see previous page)
What if I already own a laptop? Students will not be able to bring a laptop. The school's best advice to ensure that effective learning occurs is that the iPad meets the listed minimum device specifications.
What if my family cannot afford to purchase an iPad or I do not own an iPad?
A limited number of iPads/tablets will be available for hire if you are experiencing financial difficulty. Please contact the school for further information.
What if I've bought an Android tablet?
Students will be unable to bring their own Android device as they will have limited functionality on the school network.
What if I've bought a Chromebook?
Education Queensland schools do not support Google products. Chromebooks will not operate on the school network. The school's best advice to ensure that effective learning occurs is that the device meets the listed minimum device specifications.
Will my child be disadvantaged if I only get a device with minimum specs?
A device that meets the school’s best advice for minimum specifications will allow students to perform the learning activities and tasks set at Sarina State High School.
Will my child be advantaged if I only get a device with better than the minimum specs?
A device that meets the school’s best advice for minimum specifications will allow students to perform the learning activities and tasks. While there is no school based advantage to exceeding the stated minimum specifications for the device, the student may be able to utilise the higher performance for home based interests and activities.
Will the school be acting as an agent to purchase devices in bulk?
Under Queensland Government law, it is not possible for the school to purchase and on-sell or lease devices to families.
10
Q and A
What are the approximate costs of devices that meet minimum specifications?
This information will be available from local and national vendors. We expect that vendors will provide a range of device quality and price options for families to consider. It is important to include protection case and insurance costs when considering the overall price. These add-ons will be available from many of the vendors at time of purchase.
From an educational viewpoint, is one device (laptop or tablet) preferred over the other?
The success of a BYOD program rests in the quality of the educational use of the device rather than the specific device itself. The school’s preference is for a device that meets the minimum specifications. It is likely that the student’s preference for a particular device is of more importance in the family’s device selection process.
Will all junior students be required to supply their own iPad?
Sarina State High School is a BYOD school for all year levels. Junior students in year 7, 8, and 9 are required to bring an iPad and senior students in 10, 11 and 12 are required to bring a laptop.
Will the school be able to guide parents on the best device/s to purchase?
The school’s advice lies in the minimum specification list. Families should consider the student’s lifestyle, interests, capabilities and levels of responsibility as they make their device choice.
What if I refuse to participate? Modern education systems are significantly supported by the use of laptops and mobile electronic devices. Students who refuse to participate will experience significant inefficiencies in their learning but will be required to complete alternate learning tasks appropriate to their learning needs. In extreme cases where this lack of participation means that learning tasks are not being attended to, students may be disciplined for their failure to engage in the program of instruction.
Can I install Microsoft Office on my iPad?
Education Queensland and Sarina State High School will provide access at no cost on student owned devices to Microsoft Office 365.
Who determines what content is allowed on a device?
Devices that are used at school may only contain material that complies with content standards that are age appropriate in accordance with the federal government censorship guidelines. The school reserves the right to determine what content is appropriate at the school.
Will students be required to carry their iPads all day?
The school’s best advice for device safety is for students to keep their device with them at all times. While this is not possible in all circumstances, the school has implemented a number of options for students to utilize to ensure safe-keeping of their device. Each faculty will have an advertised policy for the safe keeping of devices. This may include bringing the devices into classrooms, storing devices in school bags or similar in a pre-determined and secure location. The Tech Room is available as a storage location during morning tea and lunch breaks and the school has padlock secured lockers in locations behind the Tech Room. The laptop lockers will be individually allocated to students at the cost of $5 per term. Students must supply their own padlock.
11
Q and A What security will we need in place on the laptop to access the school network?
Network and device security is paramount to all at Sarina State High School. The school will install the Education Queensland Technical Solution that enables non-school owned devices to access the internet and school network. The Technical Solution allows student owned devices to function as school machines with the same level of internet filtering, network protection and security.
How will connectivity between School and home operate?
School owned and non-school owned devices cannot connect to the school network when away from the school site. All faculties at Sarina State High School are working towards creating virtual classrooms, via eLearn.eq.edu.au, so that junior and senior school students will have 24/7 online access to learning resources for their current classes.
Can I print from my iPad? Sarina State High School IT Technicians will provide software installation, network access, printer access and internet access advice for students in face-to-face, written and online formats. Printer faults should be reported to the Sarina State High School IT Technician before school, during lunch and after class.
What is the minimum iOS Needed?
12 or current iOS as of January 2019 is the minimum iOS needed.
How do I set up a new iPad and download and create an Apple ID?
Please refer to the schools website for easy step by step instructions. Parents/guardians/carers will also be required to provide a separate Apple ID for each student as the legal age for setting up an Apple ID account is 13 years or over.
Can I charge my iPad at school? iPads brought to school need to be fully charged.
What do we do if the device needs warranty or damage repairs?
Parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the repair of student devices.
Will the school technicians help with identifying problems on BYO devices?
To ensure device warranty compliance, the Sarina State High School IT Technicians may only provide advice on, or service to, school owned devices or school endorsed devices.
How is the school going to prevent financial discrimination?
All students in years 7, 8 and 9 will be required to supply their own iPad for learning at Sarina State High School. In 2019, all students in years 10, 11 and 12 will be required to supply their own computer for learning. In individual cases of financial hardship, families should engage in a direct conversation with the school Principal to explore avenues for support.
What happens if another student damages my iPad?
The owner or custodian of a device will always have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure its safe storage and proper management. Students will be disciplined for their behavioral actions where evidence supports a finding of negligent or willful action which results in damage to a device within the school. Such discipline will be under the provisions of Sarina State High School’s Responsible Behavior Plan for students and the cost of damages/repairs will be passed on.
12
Q and A Who is responsible for the iPad if damaged at school?
The student is always responsible for the safe-keeping and responsible use of their own device. The school’s best advice for device safety is for students to keep their device with them at all times or in an advertised, sanctioned, safe keeping place.
Does school insurance cover damage?
The school does not provide insurance for student devices. The school encourages parents/guardians/carers to liaise with an insurance agent to ensure that the device is insured in its own right or specifically covered within an existing insurance policy whilst being used at school and/or other locations. Insurance coverage is available as an add-on for school endorsed devices purchased through the online portal. Insurance claims can be lodged from home or via the Sarina State High School IT Technicians at school.
Can the school install apps on my iPad?
Yes. Students will be required to enroll their devices into the school Mobile Device Management System at the beginning of the year. This will enable the school to provide some apps for the students while ensuring the device is properly configured.
What do I do if I don’t know anything about iPads?
Don’t worry. All students will participate in an iPad course at the beginning of the year. They will be shown how to email, print and connect to the schools network. They will also enroll in an MDM which helps to install any apps that will be required.
Who can I talk to about any questions I have about my child’s iPad?
The IT department is open from 8am to 3.30pm should you have any questions. Please call the school admin on 0749 438 111 to be transferred through.

Sarina State High ICT Responsible Use Policy
This document defines the Responsible Use Policy for student use of the Sarina State High
Computer Systems. Its main purpose is to encourage the mature and responsible use of the
facilities available to the students through the provision of clear usage guidelines. Students
authorised to use the school’s computer system also have Internet and Electronic Mail access.
The use of ICT devices and systems has been designed to help students keep up with the
demands of the 21st century. Helping students become responsible digital citizens will
enhance not only what we do in the classroom, but also give students skills and experiences that
will prepare them for their future studies and career.
The Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment deems the
following to be responsible use and behaviour by a student:
o developing appropriate literacy, communication and information skills;
o authoring text, artwork, audio and visual material for publication on the Intranet or Internet
for educational purposes as supervised and approved by the school;
o conducting general research for school activities and projects;
o communicating or collaborating with other students, teachers, parents or experts in relation
to school work;
o accessing online references such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc;
o researching and learning through the Department’s e-learning environment.
The Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment deems the
following to be irresponsible use and behaviour by a student:
o use the IT resources in an unlawful manner
o download, distribute or publish offensive messages or pictures;
o insult, harass or attack others or use obscene or abusive language;
o deliberately waste printing and Internet resources;
o damage any electronic devices, printers or the network equipment;
o commit plagiarism or violate copyright laws; o use unsupervised internet chat;
o send chain letters or Spam e-mail (junk mail);
o access 3/4G networks during lesson time;
o knowingly download viruses or any other programs capable of breaching the Department’s
networks security.
16
Sarina State High ICT Responsible Use Policy In addition to this Sarina State High states that:
Users are responsible for the security, maintenance and integrity of their individually owned
devices and their network accounts.
Users are required to register their personally owned device/s using the Student Participation
Agreement, prior to connecting to the school network and to create a password to
protect their account. This password should be difficult enough so as not to be guessed
by other users and under no circumstances should passwords be divulged to any other
user on the system. If users have any reason to suspect that their account security may
have been compromised or tampered with, it should be reported immediately to
Technical Support.
Information dispatched from the school network is a reflection on how the global community
perceives the school. All students using the systems are encouraged to show that they are
positive ambassadors for Sarina State High School. No obscene, inflammatory, racist,
discriminatory or derogatory language should be used in electronic mail or any other form
of network communication.
Students using the system must not at any time attempt to access other computer systems,
accounts or unauthorised network drives or files or to access other people’s devices
without their permission and without them present.
Students must not record, photograph or film any students or school personnel without the
express permission of the individual/s concerned and the supervising teacher.
Students must get permission before copying files from another user. Copying files or
passwords belonging to another user without their express permission may constitute
plagiarism and/or theft.
Students need to understand copying of software, information, graphics, or other data files
may violate copyright laws without warning and be subject to prosecution from agencies
to enforce such copyrights.
The school will educate students regarding cyber bullying, safe Internet and email practices
and health and safety regarding the physical use of electronic devices. Students have a
responsibility to behave in line with these safe practices.
Any inappropriate material will be removed from personally owned devices before bringing
the device to school and such material will not be shared with other students.
It is recommended families are responsible for providing their own individual insurance on
privately owned electronic devices, to assure to always have a working device. Other
consequences may be deemed necessary following Sarina State High School’s Responsible
Behaviour Plan for students.
Students and parents/guardians/carers are to read and sign the Sarina State High School BYO iPad
Program 2019 Participation Agreement on the following page.
Please tear off the 2019 Participation Agreement page and return to Sarina State High School
Administration Office with your completed enrolment package.
