The Headache Center Insti tute: United with one purposeThe Headache Center Insti tute proudly supports medical professionals and pati ents by promoti ng
headache medicine educati on, headache research and pati ent advocacy groups. We know that every piece of the is a necessary ingredient for success. Our project serves 5 core areas:
The World Health Organizati on recognizes migraine as one of the most disabling diseases,
comparable to dementi a, quadriplegia, and acti ve psychosis. Despite this fact, pati ents with headache disorders rarely receive the empathy and accommodati ons required for survival. The Annual Mississippi Headache Symposium was
developed to improve headache educati on among local healthcare providers, while the
Annual Miles for Migraine event spotlights the disease for the community.
The sti gma associated with headache disorders oft en causes suff erers to feel isolated. The
Headache Center facilitates pati ent-led support groups for both migraine and cluster headache.
Financial assistance for expensive treatment opti ons is off ered based on need and income.
PRACTITIONER TRAINING
LEGISLATIVE CHANGE
Clinical studies are a criti cal part of the ongoing eff ort to develop more
eff ecti ve treatment opti ons for headache disorders. The Headache
Neurology Research Insti tute is currently parti cipati ng in 7 nati onal
and internati onal clinical trials to establish safety and effi cacy of new
emerging headache treatment opti ons.
Migraine is the fi rst cause of disability under 50, yet there is a criti cal shortage
of qualifi ed headache specialists. The Headache Center Fellowship will provide clinical training in headache
management and best practi ces established by consensus guidelines.
The World Health Alliance describes migraine as a “forgott en epidemic”
due to the signifi cant disproporti on of nati onal funding appropriated towards
headache research. Partnering with Miles for Migraine, we acti vely
support the annual lobbying event Headache on the Hill.

Headache patients are truly suffering, and their burden isn’t confined to typical headache symptoms. Studies have found that migraine sufferers attempt suicide at a higher rate than people without migraine, are 2.5 times more likely to suffer from depression, and are 12 times more likely to suffer from panic attacks.
Nevertheless, there is a critical shortage of qualified providers in headache medicine. There are currently fewer than 500 Certified Headache Specialists in the United States, and patients seeking treatment typically face 6-15 months on a waiting list before they even receive an initial consultation. As result, of the estimated 39 million headache sufferers in the United States today:

Created to address this critical shortage of qualified practitioners, the program provides licensed healthcare professionals with hands-on clinical training in the practice of the headache specialty. Students are immersed in a working Headache Specialty clinic, learning from some of the nation’s top experts in Headache Medicine and shadowing a headache specialist on a one-on-one basis. The Fellowship is currently accepting appliations for both students and employers.
