In this second Issue of the HCA Magazine for 2019, entitled Innovate, we explore new technology and how you can utilise it in your own salon. Haircare’s social media guru, Ash Reinboth gives us her insider tips on how to get started on a smart Social Media Strategy.

2019 Haircare ConferenceHaircare held its 2019 Conference at their Adelaide Headquarters in February this year. The Sales, Education and Marketing teams from across Australia and New Zealand joined forces to present four jam-packed days of learning, strategic planning and team building. The Haircare family demonstrated their supreme ability to work hard and play hard with a Gala Awards Dinner at the National Wine Centre to celebrate. The top gong was awarded to the Victoria/Tasmania team, which won State of the Year, while many individuals took out awards for their exceptional efforts in Education and Sales.

Staino Leaves Its Mark on SydneyThe Staino by Evo Fab Pro VIP Launch event was held at The Ox on Oxford Street in Sydney. The venue was decked out with giant Staino boxes, splashes of colourful paint and imagery of Staino hair creations. Around 90 salon owners and stylists, trade media and influencers attended to see the official unveiling of the new intense direct-dye range from the wunderkinds at Evo. Evo’s Creative Director, Lauren McCowan was on stage dressing out the model’s hair, while Jay Kownacki, Head of Evo Education talked the audience through the colour formulas, showcasing Lime x Jade, Fuschia x Plum, Neon Yellow, Ruby and Flame. One new thing you learned last year?Carving out a work-life balance for myself and setting more time to think creatively. Instead of just working on ideas and formulas, I tried to focus on taking more time to be creative and pragmatic as an artist, so I can then offer more to the industry.

Must have products? I’m never without a Cloud Nine Original Iron, Mason Pearson Junior Pure Bristle Brush or my Evo Builder’s Paradise Working Hairspray. They’re just perennial in my kit, I use them on almost every head of hair, they just make my work better. I look at the tools I use to perform my craft, like my assistant. If they don’t make my work better and evolve how I work to allow me to think more creatively, then I don’t use them.

How do you keep educating yourself? I learn when I teach other people, so I’m constantly learning from my students. The way we run Cloud Nine education is very much about making a collaborative space where people can learn and be learnt from and I think that’s where the best ideas come from.

Favourite online resource for staying up-to-date with hair trends and techniques?WGSN is my go-to, it really delves into trends and colours across multiple different industries. They cover what consumers and industry are buying into and the where and why of emerging trends.

Why is it important to keep learning to stay at the forefront of the industry? As an artist, if you want to stay in the career for 20 years as you evolve as a person, I think your art should evolve too. I think hairdressers are so used to looking after other people, but if they aren’t being a little bit selfish and growing themselves as an artist, then they can never offer their clients the best service they deserve.

What are you offering this year in your education sessions? At Cloud Nine we have a long running program called The Origin, which is our fundamentals in styling. It’s designed to shift the way a hairdresser thinks and let them have complete creative control. We learn to use heat as a tool to build the quality of the base of the hair and we also work on the psychology of the hairdresser-client relationship.

One new thing you learned last year?A simple little trick I picked up from Moroccanoil’s Artistic Director, Kevin Hughes was to spray bobby pins with hairspray for extra grip. So simple and genius. I love those sorts of tips.

Must have products? The Color Complete range. With the colour market being so massive at the moment, I just wanted all my colours to stay true and vibrant and maintain amazing healthy hair.

How do you keep educating yourself? I’m super lucky to be part of an amazing global team. We bounce a lot off each other and keep each other educated and motivated. I also try to watch as many other people I look up to in the world of hair, to keep inspired and educated.

Favourite online resource for staying up-to-date with hair trends and techniques?Instagram is still a favourite instant source to see what’s going on around the world. I also reference the Vogue Runway app around fashion weeks to keep up to date with trends and techniques.

Why is it important to keep learning to stay at the forefront of the industry? Learning for me is about keeping myself motivated and inspired. If you don’t keep improving and learning, it's a very easy way to get bored. I love learning new tips and tricks.

What are you offering this year in your education sessions? Every year the Moroccanoil education gets stronger and stronger. We are offering our industry peeps approachable and usable techniques that can be applied on all our clients. In-salon to studio education, Bridal, Knotwork, Cutting, Signature Finishing and Editorial.

One new thing you learned last year?Tapestry! For one of my collections I wanted to create a weave texture with multiple colours that felt really Peruvian. After watching some YouTube and picking a few knitters and crocheters brains, I cleared my dining table, coloured about 50 pieces of hair and got weaving.

Must have products? Evo’s newest jack of all trades – Macgyver. This multi-purpose mousse is a saviour in the salon to get buckets of volume, but also to finish with for some separation. As well as creating cool wet looks for editorial work.

How do you keep educating yourself? As an educator it’s super important to continue to educate myself. I’m always learning new things from the people I meet, both inside and outside of the industry. I educate myself not only through the many amazing stylists that surround me – both nationally and internationally, but I look at fashion, trends, fabrics and architecture. It’s crazy where you can find inspiration and translate that into hair if you just look. You’ll never know everything in our industry, and that’s the fun part!

Favourite online resource for staying up-to-date with hair trends and techniques?Instagram - it’s at your fingertips and loaded with so much diversity all in a hashtag. The big guys, little guys and everyone in between.

We are so lucky that hair education has no ceiling and it’s constantly evolving and that keeps me so excited and motivated to push and grow.

I’ll be taking our studio styling course along with in-salon sessions for cutting and styling. You can expect easy to follow techniques that can be used in a salon environment and also more editorially. Lots of twists, tips and tricks and some wow factor. n November 19 last year, Ella Dillon posted a photo to Facebook of an

empty space with a bit of timber framework and a man on the tools. The caption read, “This is the beginning of something big”.

Owning a salon has been a goal of Ella’s for the past eight years. “I didn’t know where or how that was going to happen,” says Ella, “but I knew that I wanted to own my own salon.”

The business side of things clicked for Ella when she moved from working for a salon owner to renting her own chair in a different location in Newcastle, New South Wales.

“I love cutting hair and the idea of giving up a couple of days on the salon floor to be running the business and doing pays – it just didn’t appeal to me,” says Ella.

“The idea of a collective of small businesses all running their own financials and all working together really took shape in my mind when I started renting my own chair.”

The Mane Collective is a group of individual freelance hair, beauty and makeup artists that work symbiotically to complete their client’s self care needs rather than compete against each other.

The Mane Collective“When I came up with the concept for the Mane Collective, I was really just being selfish,” says Ella with a chuckle. “I thought, I’d like to get my nails done while I’m waiting for my hair colour.”

Ella has identified time as a major constraint on her client's lives and her own.

Brush through the top of the hair with the Denman Small Cushion Brush 100% Natural Boar Bristle Brush to soften up the texture and leave out some hair around the face.

Create a loose 3-strand braid wrapping around the head. Plait all the way out and secure with a sectioning clip. Tug on small sections of the braid to loosen and create volume.

Repeat braid on the other side of the head and mist both braids with hairspray before securing each braid with a small elastic.

Wrap the twisted ponytail around the elastic to create a top knot. Pin the ends into the elastic to secure.

Start with clean, blow-dried straight hair that has been brushed through using the Denman Large Paddle Brush.

Create texture through the crown using a product such as Evo Haze Styling Powder. Create a side part in the hair using Denman Pin Tail Comb 212mm.

Get The Look: Prep wet hair by applying 1-2 pumps of Moroccanoil Original Treatment from mid-lengths to ends (Moroccanoil Treatment Light for fine hair). Liberally spritz with Moroccanoil Perfect Defense to protect the hair ahead of heat styling, blow-dry with the Ceramic 25 mm Round Brush. To build texture in the dry hair, apply Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray. Use a medium barrel curling iron to put a bend in the hair. Pull the hair back and pin just above the occipital bone, achieving a half-up, half-down style. Take v-shaped pins to refine and define the shape. To separate the loose hair and give added texture, warm a small amount of Moroccanoil Molding Cream between the fingers and work through the ends. Taking your business’ social media presence seriously is a positive first step towards building a more robust client base, as Facebook is the world’s most popular website.

The best way to manage your content and the way you’re perceived on social media is with a sound strategy and the first thing to consider when defining your business’ social media strategy, is what content you want to produce and share with the world.

“Haircare uses four main pillars to help guide and give consistency to what we post about,” says Ash.

The four main pillars are:

Hair, Education, Product and Lifestyle And while these pillars suit Haircare, they are easily transferred to any salon as a starting point for your own strategy.

“Post inspirational and attainable content that engages and grows your community,” says Ash, as an overall maxim for your content strategy. Drilling down into each of the four pillars, this rule will help assess what you are posting.

Creating high quality images and videos of hair you’ve created in your salon is the goal.

“The hair must be attention grabbing, think about what is going to stop someone from scrolling past your post,” says Ash, who offers a further tip of photographing in a brightly-lit space with an uncluttered background.

Photograph and share images of products. Product images are a great way to break up a busy Instagram feed and are also a fantastic way to educate your followers on the benefits of salon quality ingredients.

“You need to keep reminding your followers why they should invest in salon services and why your products are better than cheaper supermarket lines,” says Ash.

Information sharing is a fantastic way of increasing your chances of new followers. If a user feels like they are going to gain something from your content then that’s a great reason for them to hit the follow button. You are rewarded by the social community for being transparent, open and authentic.

The lifestyle content you share with your audience is really where your brand values come to life. This is where you can show your salon’s personality and unique selling points. You might be a sustainable salon and share outdoors and natural environment images.

You might want to celebrate a special milestone like a staff member’s birthday or work anniversary. "Users want to personally connect with the brands and business’ they follow,” says Ash.

If you’ve been asked to contribute to a fashion parade or are thinking of hosting an event yourself, consider using Trello as opposed to an ordinary Excel spreadsheet.
