Monopoly Themed Christmas Run

As Christmas is always a busy time the Club Christmas Run was brought forward to 9th December. The choice could not have been more appropriate with a nice sunny day in store for us. Once again David and Coral Westley had planned a great run for us and it was based on a monopoly theme. I gave the Essex a super quick dust off, loaded the esky with some cold drinks and our salad for the table and we set off accompanied by our guests for the day. It was a real contrast for us as we were motoring in a late 1920’s car but were reliant on Google Maps for our run solutions as I realised the day before that I had very carefully managed to throw out my last remaining street directory. I recalled doing this with some zeal when we started having access to on board sat-nav in the modern car. Oops. An essential tool for car runs. That and the fact that our monopoly set was now relocated with our grandchildren did not help! Never mind. Test the grey matter today. We arrived at the club rooms in good time and after meets and greets and signing on the run sheet we accepted our “travel Pack” of sustenance from Coral, collected the run sheet from David, and Passed “Go” to commence the run with everyone else. As usual, the run sheet was very detailed and easy to follow (although it did become clear later that some members “diverted” from the plan”) and we soon were looking for the first “Clue”. Piccadilly..was that a Yellow coded property? Looking out for The Strand, then Mitcham Railway Station? I could hear the cogs of the collective mid in our car whirling and rattling? Was The Strand Red? Was Bond Street Green? Piccadilly was Yellow?? What were the Station Names? On to the next prompt for the run sheet… Soon the “Travel Pack” was open and the sugar hit started to assist the Grey matter. We found Euston, and set off to Mayfair. As we motored down Glen Osmond Road it became very clear that the Toy Run for the Motorcyclists had left Glenelg and their arri-val was imminent. Heaps of bikes already and tons of spectators and Police controlling the intersections. Back at the club rooms members were already setting up for the Christmas Party with tables/chairs being organised, the BBQ meat being prepared and the salads set out. All ready for the return of the run participants. Meanwhile we were in search of Marl-borough and Coventry Streets. We stopped on Military Road to look at the Adelaide Shores Adult Playground.all wires and high perches and then moved on. Most of the run cars had returned to “Free Parking” and the meal had commenced by the time we got back to Glandore and we joined in. A great BBQ was enjoyed followed by Fruit Salad and Ice-cream and then David was able to go through the answers to the run for everyone. Another great run put together by David and Coral and our thanks go to you for doing this for the club, particularly as it was done on such short notice after your return from overseas. Thanks also go to the Matthews Family and their team who once again sort-ed the table decorations, the desert and co-ordinated the meal. And also to Edd Grey for sourcing the BBQ meat. Thanks also to the numerous others who I am also sure were working behind the scene to make this a successful day as well. A good day our enjoyed by all. Shane Conry

UP COMING EVENTS FOR 2019

The Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club would like to invite you and your Club to participate in our annual Gawler to Barossa Veteran & Vintage Run sponsored by Steinborner Automotive to be held on Sunday the 7th of April 2019. The 2018 Run attracted 58 pre 1931 vehicles, including 4 motor cycles, from many different clubs. There were no traffic lights (one pedestrian crossing excepted). There was an outstanding morning tea provided on the Village Green at Lyndoch, a lot of friendly chatter, a pleasant drive, and a lot of fun and prizes. It appeared that a great day was enjoyed by all who attended. The Steinborner Trophy was won by Alby & Kaye Gray in their 1929 Buick Marquette Tourer The GVV&CVC President’s Trophy was won by Robert Smyth in his 1930 AJS Model A Saloon The two Stirrer’s Trophies were won by Don LeBusque & Peter Broster We would like to invite your club to include this run in their calendar for 2019 and encourage all Vintage and Veteran car owners to partici-pate in one of the few runs designed specifically for our oldest vehicles. If you or your Club is not involved with Pre 1931 vehicles consider organising a run to spectate along the route and join the festivities at the Greenock Oval supporting the motoring history of our state. Please find an entry flyer attached that you are welcome to distribute among your fellow enthusiasts. Some clips from last year’s run also attached. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfLvHtYm9Qk Please direct any enquiries to… Entries: David Prest: 0438 112 266 or [email protected] Event Director: Geoff Boundy: 0437 689 973 Email: [email protected] Regards Trevor Unsworth Run Director

Just for a laugh

General Information ST CLAIR WET LANDS 20 JANUARY 2019 We were blessed with relief from the heat wave from earlier in the week to a 33 degree forecast for this run.

The run started at the club rooms at 8:00 am and took a short detour along the Esplanade at Henley Beach South

before heading to our breakfast location at McDonalds on Port Road where we were joined by other members.

After breakfast, it was a short drive to the St Clair Wetlands main pump shed where further members joined the group.

Our host, Shannon Watkins took the group into the office and switchboard room where he played a short promotional

video which gave an overall view of the entire Wetlands network managed by the Charles Sturt Council.

Shannon then gave a detailed summary of the technical workings around the capture, filtration of and storage of rain water

form various sources to enable recycled water to be pumped into homes in the development for toilet flushing and gardens

and for golf coarse and park lands watering. His publication on the project was attached to the run sheet for additional information.

The group was taken into the pumping station area where various pieces of pumping equipment were pointed out and

the purpose they had in sending the filtered water off to the various end users.

Following the presentation, members took a stroll around the paths of the wetlands before making here way home.

MY EARLY VEHICLES INEZ JOHNSON

Page 14

When I first came to South Australia in 1960 I worked first as a mothercraft nurse in the babies’ nursery at Calvary. Later than same year I moved to Woodside and worked at the Onkaparinga District Hospital, for the next 2 ½ years. My first vehicle was a Lambretta scooter and I needed a licence, so went to the Woodside Police Station and sat the test, failed the first attempt but was successful a few days later, then I could start to learn to ride the scooter, Johnson Road Ambleside was my training road an with someone on the back shouting in my ear how to change gears, then practising on my own for a whole day, I was able to ride on the road and get about.

After one winter in the hills wet and cold riding was not so good, so I bought a 1948 Morris 10 (black) and traded the scooter in, I did not know how to drive a car, so Dick’s younger brother who was 15, came with me to Jarrett’s (Vimy Ridge Service Station) and sat in the passenger seat and changed gears for me, while I steered the car, and used the pedals “clutch in now out” he said every time a gear change was needed, back to Johnson Road and another day of practise, until I felt confident to drive back to Woodside.

I had some interesting times with my Morris 10, I cannot remember what order things happened in, but will relate 3 incidents during the time I owned it.

(1) The local GP asked me to take an overdue pregnant patient for a “bumpy” car ride put to Harrogate, over the rough gravel roads, matron gave her permission, cap and apron off, in the car and off we went, she was highly amused and said “will this work,” we will soon know I replied, we had a great hour and a half, bumping over the rough roads and those who know Mor-ris 10’s know that they crab walked around corners due to the direct steering. We had lots of fun and arrived back at the hos-pital still intact, no labour, but later that same evening she came back in and No 4 baby arrived very quickly.

(2) The second incident came when I discovered about 10 m that the car was missing from the carport, after ringing the po-lice, received a phone call early next day, the car was found by Victoria Park in Adelaide, hot wired, out of petrol and flat battery, the lights had been left on. Dick to a friend to retrieve it for me, and the next day to everyone’s amusement, I was called out to the main passage of the hospital, to find 2 large Army MP’s and 1 short Army Private between them, marching towards me. “Ten-shun” and stopped, “right private get on with it” it turned out he had been drinking at the Woodside Hotel and was walking back to Inverbrackie Army base, saw the car and decided to have a joy ride to Adelaide until it ran out of pet-rol, left the car lights on and thumbed a ride back to Woodside and somehow got caught. I was asked if the Army could pun-ish the offender instead of the local court and a small article appeared in the local paper the next week “Morris 10 stolen, taken for a joy ride”

(3) The third incident happened at the hospital, a Sunday afternoon, on duty with Matron, her friends invited her for coffee at the local café “back in an hour she said” during that time I went to collect laundry her black cat Timmy was outside playing with something, big yowl then flopped the “something” was a diamond head snake, which I quickly killed, cat unconscious, rang local vet at Oakbank, bring the cat and some anti venom serum to my rooms. I rang the café, left Matron a message, one of the ambulatory patients said “I’ll look after everyone till Matron gets back”, cap and apron off, cat in basket, serum, and off I drove to Oakbank, then helped the vet treat the cat, IV infusion in place, can I stay and help till its finished. The phone rang Matron calling “cat will be okay” says the vet, “can I keep him here with the nurse until IV finished” Arrived back at the hospi-tal nearly 2 hours since left to be met by Matron and other interested people, the cat recovered and all was well.

I transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woodville to continue my general training still with my Morris 10, then later bought a 1959-60 2 door Morris Minor 1000. Had to have correct indicators fitted first and kept that until after Dick and I were married in 1968.

City living and nursing was much less fun than country living and nursing.

“George” the gnome I knitted while at Woodside and became my faithful travelling companion for many years and was loved to death by our first two children.

Some facts about the Morris 10 for all of the Morris car buffs.

PS Interesting history of the Morris 10, previous owner had the engine reconditioned by well known MG specialist Tony Ohlmeyer, fitted with Laystall liners, MG piston and camshaft, ran quite nicely
