Use Objects and Pictures to Multiply a Whole Number and a Fraction Unit 12 5.3(I)Introduction

Activity: (10–15 minutes)

The teacher reads Multiplying Menace: The Revenge of Rumpelstiltskin by Pam Calvert. The class discusses the situations in the story in which a whole number is multiplied by a fraction. Each student selects a situation and creates a Before and After poster on a sheet of drawing paper, including the corresponding equation. One example is shown. (DOK: 2, RBT: Apply, ELPS: (c)1.C, (c)1.E, (c)1.H, (c)2.C, (c)2.E)

Before: 30 spiders

After: 1 spider

1 ___ 30 x 30 = 1

Formative Assessment (5–10 minutes)

Students display posters for the class to view. After class members have viewed all of the posters, the teacher gives each student two sticky notes of different colors. On one sticky note, students describe something they understand from the activity. On the other sticky note, students describe something they would like to understand better. The teacher creates two class posters titled What We Understand and What We Want to Understand Better. Students affix sticky notes to the appropriate posters. The teacher uses student responses to assist in planning instructional activities. (DOK: 1, RBT: Understand, ELPS: (c)1.C, (c)1.E, (c)1.H, (c)4.G, (c)5.B, (c)5.G)

An art palette is an oval tray used by artists to mix colors of paint. An artist squeezes dabs of color from small tubes of paint onto the palette. Then, she places her thumb through a small hole in the tray. The artist balances the palette against her arm as she paints. The artist knows the colors she will need. Different shades of color are made by mixing the dabs of paint. As the artist mixes her paints, the palette appears as a colorful rainbow.

8.13, 8.13(A), 8.13(C) Unit 1 Where Do You Want To Go?

Prepare for the Unit Student Pages 5–14

Review the following information to clarify the TEKS before planning instruction.

TEKS 8.13 – Students use comprehension skills to analyze how words, images, graphics, and sounds work together in various forms to impact meaning. Students will continue to apply earlier standards with greater depth in increasingly more complex texts. Students are expected to:

(A) evaluate the role of media in focusing attention on events and informing opinion on issues;

(C) evaluate various techniques used to create a point of view in media and the impact on audience.

Reporting Category – 3-Supporting

Unpacking the TEKSForms of media include print media (e.g., newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters), broadcast media (e.g., radio, television), the Internet (e.g., web pages, web articles, references, blogs), and social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram). These forms rely on a combination of words, images, graphics, and sounds to focus attention on events and inform opinions on issues. Readers, listeners, and viewers of media must carefully evaluate the role of media and the techniques that are used to create a point of view and impact the audience. Media messages use a variety of techniques, such as flattery, repetition, fear, and humor to impact the public. Visual and sound techniques such as special effects, camera close-ups, lighting, font style and size, use of color, or music also influence media messages. Consumers of media must recognize the influence that the media has in manipulating public opinion. Students must become media literate in order to navigate the constant stream of media messages and techniques and to evaluate the validity and impact of the messages.

Critical Thinking TraitsAlthough students may demonstrate multiple critical thinking traits as they master this standard, provide opportunities for students to apply the communicate and examine traits. (See Critical Thinking Traits in Teacher Resources.)

Connections to the TEKSReview the Instructional Activities and determine those you will use to support instruction and practice of the TEKS.

Activity 1: Magazine Messages (15 minutes)

Have students choose advertisements from magazines with a variety of messages. Instruct students to write the messages of the advertisements and evaluate how well the media communicates the messages and impacts the audience. Debrief student responses in the large group. (TEKS: 8.1, 8.13, 8.13(A), 8.13(B), 8.13(C), Figure 19(B), Figure 19(C), DOK: 2, Bloom’s/RBT: Analysis/Analyze, ELPS: (c)1.A, (c)1.C, (c)2.D, (c)2.E, (c)2.I, (c)3.D, (c)3.E, (c)3.G, (c)3.H, (c)3.I, (c)3.J, (c)4.G, (c)4.J, (c)4.K, (c)5.G)

Activity 2: Media Detectives (15 minutes)

Have students choose current events and observe, for several days, how the events are presented by three different forms of media. As students are following the presentations of the events, encourage them to evaluate how each media form focuses attention on the events and delivers an opinion on the events. Ask students to also determine the techniques the media employs to impact the audience. Have students record their findings on three-pronged webs with one prong labeled for each form of media. Invite students to share webs in small groups. (TEKS: 8.1, 8.13, 8.13(A), 8.13(B), 8.13(C), 8.26, 8.27, Figure 19(B), Figure 19(C), DOK: 2, Bloom’s/RBT: Analysis/Analyze, ELPS: (c)1.A, (c)1.H, (c)2.D, (c)2.F, (c)2.G, (c)2.H, (c)2.I, (c)3.E, (c)4.G, (c)4.K, (c)5.G)

When you adapt, you look at things in different ways.

A triangle is a closed figure with three sides.

This puzzle is made of triangles.

How many triangles can you find?

If you did not find more than 6 triangles, look again.

How many triangles did you find on your

second look?

Share your thinking with a partner.

Did you both find the same number

Can you drop an egg

without it breaking? That

is the goal of a fun science

activity. It is called an egg drop contest. Kids must drop

eggs from a height. The eggs must be protected so they

do not break.

To play, kids receive eggs. They think of ways to protect

their eggs. Some kids wrap them in paper. Other kids

tape cotton balls on their eggs. Some kids use feathers

and straws to keep their eggs safe.

Then the kids drop their eggs. PLOP !

They look at their eggs. Did some eggs break? What

caused them to crack? Why did some eggs not break?

The kids get more eggs. They change the ways they

wrap their eggs. They try new ways to keep their

eggs safe.

Then the kids drop their eggs again. PLOP !

How might you protect your egg in an egg drop contest?

This is an egg.

This is an egg that was dropped.
