The VSAFL Holiday Showcase is an entertaining and heartwarming inclusive community event where children, teens and adults have the opportunity to “showcase” their talents on a professional stage. On December 9th, a variety of performing artists from Palm Beach County took the stage at the Duncan Theatre @ Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth. Hosted by Alan Billingsley, the Showcase featured nine different performances. The performers included: The VSAFL SpotLighters, soloist Xiomara Serrano, an inclusive dance performance by VSAFL Dance Residency students from Forest Hill Elementary School and dance students from Bak

Middle School of the Arts, pianist Joel Solomon, VSAFL’s Beatbusters, violinist Elizabeth Torres, pianist Brian Chen, John I. Leonard High School’s VSAFL Dance Residency and Southern Dance Theatre’s Special Arts Ensemble.

In conjunction with the Holiday Showcase, an exhibit of VSAFL visual artists displayed their artwork in the lobby. This artwork was created during summer and fall VSAFL visual arts programs. The exhibit was on display for public viewing for 2 weeks following the Holiday Showcase.

Like elves in Santa’s workshop that are never seen, but always busy, VSAFL would like to thank everyone who worked behind the scenes of “Thank You For The Music”.

Furniture Painting and Jewelry Making were two wonderful programs facilitated by Catherine Rich from Art Affects, LLC. this fall! All students were provided with in depth descriptions and step-by-step instructions for each program. In furniture painting, students collaboratively painted a large picnic bench as well as individual pieces of furniture, including a cabinet, a chair, or a side table. All of these projects turned out beautiful! The bench will be at our facility for use and will serve as an artistic piece and advertisement for VSAFL! In jewelry making, girls made bracelets, necklaces, and earrings in addtion to key chains! We sold all of the jewelry the students exhibited from this program at the Holiday Showcase in December, which tells you just how beautiful they must have been! Thank you Catherine for these amazing programs!

This Norton Workshop focused on the exhibition Brilliant: Recent Acquisitions. Vivid and intense colors saturated the works on paper and glass featured. The exhibit included artworks by Dale Chihuly, Arturo Herrera and Michael Craig-Martin among other artists. Students used these artists’ works as a springboard for their own colorful collage. After the students completed their collage, they each were invited to share their work with the class. This is always an impactful time of the workshop, when the students explain exactly what they learned and are able to comprehend the methodology and technique of the works they were shown. The students and family members thoroughly enjoyed this workshop!

This program has introduced students to the art of glass fusing as well as ceramics and mixed media. The class was facilitated by staff from The Craft Gallery, a professional ceramic & glass workshop center in West Palm Beach. Projects this year included ceramic wind chimes, glass fusing pieces with animal and colorful themes, as well as mixed media butterflies. All participants learned safety practices for glass fusing and demonstrated them throughout the program. Artwork created will be shown at various traveling exhibits throughout Palm Beach County!

The Dance Residency program at Forest Hill Elementary School is one of several school-based performing arts programs held throughout the year. The Dance Residency gives the students the opportunity to explore the art of dance and movement and be a part of a creative process. Professional dance instructor Dee Mac worked with Forest Hill’s self-contained ESE classes from the start of the 2017/18 school year. A group of 9 students were selected to perform “Brand New Day” from the musical, The Wiz at the

VSAFL Holiday Showcase at the Duncan Theatre @ Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth on December 9, 2017. The students practiced with Ms. Dee every Wednesday and were excited to wear their costumes onstage. Performing with the students on stage were students from Bak Middle School of the Arts. Forest

Hill faculty and staff, headed by the school’s principal, Mr. Scott McNichols, provided on-going support of the program and helped make the event a very memorable one for the students and their proud parents and families. Learning about themselves, taking chances, trying new things and having fun, are just some of the benefits of the dance residency for our very special students.

SPotLiGhterSThe SpotLighters have just finished their eleventh year performing under the direction of Kat Litrenta. The program culminated in a performance at VSAFL’s Holiday Showcase at the Duncan Theatre in Lake Worth on December 9, 2017. Performing with the SpotLighters onstage is assistant instructor Christina Gooding. The SpotLighters learn a different routine each year and this season they performed to popular music songs by ABBA!

During 2018 the SpotLighters: On The Road will perform at three local venues! Performing onstage is a life-long dream for many and with hard work and practice, the SpotLighters can fulfill their dreams.

Classes will begin again in October. We are always looking for new “SpotLighters”!

Please contact Erica Russell at (561) 966-7024 if you are interested in joining the group.

VSA Florida - Palm Beach County mission is to create a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts.

VSAFL icles

In partnership with Palm BeachCounty Parks and Recreation Department

VSAFL’s Community Theatre Program continues to be a big hit with our teen and adult actors. This unique program is designed to create an opportunity for teens and adults with disabilities to develop talents in theatre arts. The actors are taught by two multi-talented local theatre professionals, Kat Kenny and Nathan Stubbs. The instructors identify the strengths of the participants who audition for roles based upon their abilities and interests. The program teaches participants to work together as an ensemble in a positive and constructive way leading towards their mutual goal. This wonderful program culminated in a performance of “Everything Old is New Again” – a very entertaining and humorous original script written by instructor Kat Kenny and performed at the VSAFL Celebration of the Arts on August 4, 2017 at the CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex in Lake Worth. Community Theatre always welcomes new participants!

To VSAFL Friends and Supporters

It is with utmost gratitude and appreciation for VSAFL that I make this contribution on behalf of my beautiful daughter Alyson who has been a participant for a couple years.

We first got introduced to VSAFL in 2014 when we relocated to West Palm Beach from Orlando. Alyson was a participant in Special Olympics Swimming in Orlando and absolutely loved the water but along the way, we also discovered that she had a greater love for dancing and the Arts. That love for dancing was quite evident whenever music was “in the air”. She would start swirling, spinning and moving to the beat without shyness or fear of what others might say or think. She was happy and that’s all that mattered, so we encouraged and promoted it.

We registered Alyson for school and that year her school participated in VSAFL Holiday Showcase. It was a day that she never forgot. She wanted to continue dancing and participating in other VSAFL programs such as the Jewelry Art Class and Painting, so we continued to sign her up for classes with an emphasis on dancing. Alyson enjoys the company of others, is quite sociable and willingly participates in the programs that she is interested in. She could not have had such great experiences without the care, graciousness and encouragement from the VSAFL team who pour so much into the lives of people with disabilities, constantly reminding them to always reach for the stars and while they are doing so to have as much fun as possible.

Alyson is always happy to go to her dance classes and reminds me days ahead that she has dance class. Even if she is tired she never hesitates to go and that’s because her dance instructors, Miss Erica Russell and Miss Samira Mohammed have always made dancing fun, fun, fun! They welcome her and encourage her talent for dancing and for that we are forever grateful. They are fun to be with and they love the participants. It’s truly a joy to watch them in action with Alyson and the other talented participants.

So our “hats are off” to VSAFL for what you are doing in the lives of our children, friends and people with disabilities in our communities. Thank you for making a big difference. We appreciate all that you do.

Gratefully,

Jillian Palmer (Alyson’s Mom)
