NEWMAN CENTER PRESENTS — 303.871.7720 — newmancenterpresents.com2

Dear friends,I’m delighted to share the 2017-2018 Newman Center Presents season with you. Our goal for the Newman Center Presents series is to provide an eclectic mix of performances that always represent the highest level of artistic excellence. We are also dedicated to exploring a broad range of culturally diverse programs and stimulating dialogue on social issues through the performing arts. This season welcomes many performers making their Denver debut, as well as the return of several audience favorites. We also launch two new series this season: the Family Series and the Student Matinee Series. Performances on these series are a great way to introduce young people to the power and magic of live performances. I look forward to seeing you in the new season and thank you for your continued support of Newman Center Presents.

Since starting Black Violin a decade ago, classically trained Florida twosome Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste and Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester have performed 200 shows a year in 49 states and 36 countries. Their groundbreaking collaboration has seen them play their blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass music for everybody from the troops in Iraq to both the official President’s Inaugural Ball and the Kids Inaugural in Washington, DC, where President Barack Obama himself gave each a hearty hand shake.

One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Martha Graham created 181 works and invented a distinctive movement language that still resonates today for its ingenuity in delving into the human psyche. For the company’s return to the Newman Center, the program will include two of Graham’s masterworks, Dark Meadow and Errand into the Maze.

NPR dubbed two-time Grammy Award®-winning singer Gregory Porter “the next great male jazz singer.” Porter writes and performs songs that dexterously weave together the threads of gospel, rhythm and blues, jazz and soul, producing a pure tapestry of sound. The New York Times says Porter is “a jazz singer of thrilling presence, a booming baritone with a gift for earthy refinement and soaring uplift.”

Acclaimed worldwide for their virtuosity, life-affirming energy and charm, British-born a cappella group The King’s Singers return to the Newman Center after their sold-out performance in 2014. Instantly recognizable for their immaculate intonation, vocal blend, diction and incisive timing, The King’s Singers are consummate entertainers.

Now in their 14th year, Spanish Harlem Orchestra has become a driving force in preserving and cultivating authentic, New York-style, hard core salsa music. The 13-member ensemble, including both vocalists and instrumentalists, is known to astound and mesmerize audiences with their energy on stage. They have been nominated for four Grammy Awards® and won two – one for Best Salsa/Merengue Album, and the other for Best Tropical Latin Album. Under band leader Oscar Hernandez, the band strives to create an unparalleled musical experience steeped in the “hard salsa” tradition.

“They make you get up and dance, tap into the good-natured, communal spirit characteristic of salsa at its timeless best.”

Celebrate the winter solstice and its warm traditions with a concert of original and traditional acoustic music drawn from the multi-platinum Winter Solstice series, as well as their many solo releases. Windham Hill founder and Grammy Award®-winning guitarist Will Ackerman is joined by singer, fiddler, pianist, and songwriter Barbara Higbie, and guitarist and composer Alex de Grassi in this special holiday concert.

An eight-time Grammy Award® nominee as both a recording artist and arranger, Tierney Sutton is often described as “a singer’s singer,” but just as often, as a “musician’s singer” who uses her voice like an instrument. The Tierney Sutton Band makes its Newman Center debut with a unique interpretation of the best of Sting’s diverse repertoire. “The Sting Variations” continues the band’s history of their remarkably creative exploration of well-known songs, embracing both commercial hits and more obscure, deep album tracks from Sting’s catalog.

“A serious jazz artist who takes the whole enterprise to another level.”

SPECTRUM DANCE THEATERA RAP ON RACEFriday / January 26 / 7:30 PMwww.spectrumdance.org

In 1970, two towering personalities of the American intelligentsia, black author and social critic James Baldwin and white anthropologist Margaret Mead, sat together and recorded a conversation on what is arguably the defining subject of the American experience – race. Now over 40 years later, two contemporary artistic icons Anna Deavere Smith (best known for her documentary theater style in plays such as “Fires in the Mirror” and “Twilight: Los Angeles”) and legendary choreographer Donald Byrd (Tony-nominated and Bessie Award-winning Director/Choreographer) re-imagine this monumental moment in history into a genre-obliterating evening of “theater for the 21st century.” In this groundbreaking production featuring the world-renowned dancers of Spectrum Dance Theater, actress Julie Briskman as Mead and Donald Byrd as Baldwin, “A Rap on Race” excavates the truths buried in the facts of this cultural artifact.

“All the performances, led by Rountree, were exceptional, the ensemble turning on an astonishing stylistic dime. This group really has come a long way — technically, intellectually, emotionally and technologically... on Saturday night, the future of classical music – of all music – seemed in the right new hands.” – Los Angeles Times

wild Up is the ultimately flexible “go anywhere, play anything” modern music collective led by Artistic Director/Conductor Christopher Rountree. With their program future folk, wild Up creates a communal concert of sound/noise/experience that celebrates old-world ways of living in the modern era. The program will explore music from ancient India, modern California, post-war New York, and from American composers who envision a future form of music rooted in folk ethos.

Recognized as one of the foremost violinists of our time, Sarah Chang has performed with the most esteemed orchestras, conductors and accompanists in an international career spanning more than two decades. In this program, Ms. Chang wows with a program that includes excerpts from Antonio Vivaldi’s four short violin concertos, known collectively as The Four Seasons, and Astor Piazzolla’s tribute to Vivaldi with a tango masterpiece entitled The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.

Bursting onto the dance scene in 2012, L.A. Dance Project has been turning heads with its fresh, contemporary vision of dance and stylistically diverse repertory. Performing a powerful triple bill including a ballet by Benjamin Millepied, founding director of L.A. Dance Project, the program is highlighted by bold musicality and dynamic movement. One of the premiere Odissi dance ensembles performing today, Nrityagram has the unprecedented distinction of making the The New York Times’ “Best Dance of the Year” list two consecutive years in a row (2015 and 2016). More than a dance company, Nrityagram was founded in a village devoted to dance. The all-female troupe’s daily life of intensive training and meditation brings to the stage compelling performances that are at once sensual and lyrical. Infused with the intoxicating rhythms of traditional music, their sinuous forms and rapt expressions transform the dancers into gods on stage.

Cashore Marionettes redefine the art of puppetry with their moving and humorous performance. The Cashore Marionettes have astounded both children and adults in Europe, the Far East, and across North America, and the Byron Theatre at the Newman Center is the perfect intimate venue to experience the marvel of this show.

The program, Simple Gifts, is a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life set to stunning music by such composers as Vivaldi, Strauss, Beethoven and Copland. The Velveteen Rabbit captivates both children and adults with its celebration of the enduring power of love. Known for their athleticism and passion, the ODC dancers seamlessly navigate the many roles that bring the story to life. They embody characters as unusual as a crocodile, a pack of real rabbits, and a 10-foot-tall Nana.

The story depicts the enduring relationship between a boy and his stuffed rabbit. Told from the perspective of the rabbit who yearns to become real, the focus is the deep bond that the boy and rabbit develop over time. Despite the rabbit’s increasing shabbiness, the boy continues to love him – and their relationship perseveres and deepens.
