TOMMY’S BABY CHARITY

Pupils and staff have raised an incredible £748.02 for Tommy's through bun sales, stationery sales and a non-uniform day. They have also collected nappies in newborn/premature baby size, cotton buds, nappy bags, baby wipes and baby clothes which are go-ing to be donated to the neonatal intensive care ward at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Tommy's fund research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provide pregnancy health information to parents. They believe it is unacceptable that one in four women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth. They want every parent to have the best possible pregnancy outcomes and to take home happy, healthy babies.

Former Olympian Richard Buck

We were delighted to welcome former Olympian Richard Buck to school on Wednesday.

Richard led two assemblies where he talked about his achievements and how sport gave him something to focus on. He learnt he was very good at sport and by putting the effort in, he improved.

Richard's message to the pupils was very inspiring. He explained through sport he learnt he had the power to control his desti-ny. It has given him confidence and focus. In addition to this Richard has made some fabulous friends, he has travelled the world and has had a lot of fun!

Richard ran a series of sports workshops for pupils in Years 5 - 8. This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to meet and work with a professional sports athlete and learn new training skills. This was a massive motivation for all our pupils.

PSHCE Menu Writing Competition

Year 7 children had a session with Mrs Fletcher our Catering Manager, to learn about balanced diets and the guidelines that control menu writing in schools.

They were set a challenge to write a menu they felt was suitable.

Mrs Fletcher said she had an amazing response and enjoyed reading through all their work. She always finds it reassuring to see that many of the items chosen by the children already exist on the menu cycle. On the same note it’s good to see new ide-as.

Some of those individual ideas have been included in next weeks menu, with the final winning menu being served on Friday.

We are proud to announce the winning menu was written by Isabelle and Beth from 7 Gibbs – well done girls.

Life Drawing

Invited Year 7 and 8 pupils were off timetable and engaged in a day of focused drawing activities.

Led by artist Esther Cawley, this curriculum enrichment day was designed to offer pupils an age-appropriate opportunity to experience a differentiated Art tuition they would not ordinarily receive in Key Stage 3.

Careers Evening

Wednesday 7 March

17:00 – 18:30

Pupils in Years 10 -13 and their parents are warmly invited to join us in the school foyer and adjoining rooms for our annual Careers Evening. This event gives pupils the opportunity to engage informally with representatives from key job sectors and to explore potential career interests.

The evening will run in the style of a Careers Fair allowing pupils to learn about the diversity of roles within each of the sectors and to take away ideas and information that will help them move forward in their careers planning. We are grateful for the support of company representatives who can offer insight and guidance on entry routes and qualifications as well as the availability of work experience and apprenticeships.

We look forward to seeing both parents and pupils for what has always been an inspirational and highly informative event in the school calendar.

Connexin £10 Challenge

The Connexin £10 Challenge started on Monday 26 February. Pupils are working in forms and have to raise as much money as they can from their initial £10. The challenge is sponsored by Connexin. Eleven years ago, ex pupils Alex Yeung and Furqan Alamgir founded Connexin with a vision to reinvent how we communicate using the Internet. It is now an international business with customers all over the world.

Ex pupil and Connexin Director Will Kebbell, spoke to pupils at this week’s assembly to offer advice on their business strategy and plans.

The challenge will run from Monday 26 February to Friday 23 March. Good luck to all pupils.

All proceeds go to the Hull Collegiate Trust.

East Riding Theatre

ERT has announced their season for 2018, kicking off with the theatre’s first in-house production of the year, Good Peo-

ple by David Lindsay-Abaire, which opens in March – it will be the first time the play has been performed outside of Broad-

way and London. Following a tremendous directorial debut last year with The Night Season, ERT’s artistic director Adrian

Rawlins, who recently visited Hull Collegiate School, will be directing this fiercely funny and compelling drama set in South

Boston, USA. Visit their website for more information www.eastridingtheatre.co.uk

World Record Attempt

Although it is nearly a year since our attempt, Guinness World Records are still deliberating over whether or not we have done enough to gain the record.

The good news, however is that even if the previous attempt is invalid, we have another attempt planned for June this year. This will be for the most people wearing swimming armbands (inflated) so that pupils from every year group including Kin-dergarten can participate. This will be done strictly on the basis that you must have registered to take part no later than one week before the attempt. Pupils will be asked to donate/be sponsored and the money will be split between the school trust and Team Uganda 2019. More details will follow, but now is the time to go and purchase some armbands if you do not al-ready have some!

Hull Animal Welfare Trust and PDSA

Form 9 Fong/Groves have nominated Hull Animal Welfare Trust as their charity for this half term. The charity, registered number 1003998, works hard to re-home dogs, cats and other smaller animals. The PDSA, registered charity num-ber 208217, treats sick animals whose owners are struggling to pay for vets bills. There will be a 'pick the date' calendar going around the school in March at 20p a go. Pick any day on the calendar, and the winning one will win an Easter egg just before we break up in March! We are also asking for any donations of the following: any pet food for any kind of ani-mal, blankets, kitchen roll, antibacterial spray and pet toys. These can be given to Miss Groves, Mr Fong, or any pupils in that form. Thank you in advance for any way in which you can support this.

FoHCS 1st Ever Promises Event

For 2018 FoHCS have decided to try something completely new. Our first ever Promises Event.

This event will consist of either a Promises Auction and/or a Promises Raffle TBD. In a Promises Event the auction items/raffle prizes are all services or experiences rather than physical things.

The way it works is this. The people donating the auction items/prizes make a promise. This could be anything from promis-ing to allow the winner of the auction item/raffle prize to use their holiday home or vintage car for a weekend or week, to promising to provide an hour or more specific services e.g professional services, such as accountancy, or general services such as gardening or DIY.

Other examples might be:

a group of teachers promising to take a set number of school age children on a half day or day trip to a local museum;

a music teacher promising to give a free hour or more music lesson;

a vet promising to allow a school age child to shadow them for a day;

a promise by HCS to provide a free after school club for one child for one term.

The sky is the limit! A mixture of promises to appeal to both children and parents works best. All promises are welcome, from parents, teachers, local businesses and anyone else connected with HCS.

Please let FoHCS have your promises by Tuesday 27 March 2018 by emailing [email protected].

Let’s make this 1st ever Promises Event one to remember!

With many thanks in advance. FoHCS

Promises will be included in the Promises Auction or Raffle at FoHCS’ discretion.
