A NOTE ON BUYING 2018Sby Linden Wilkie, Managing Director

We are delighted to offer you this, our 2018 Burgundy ‘en primeur’ offer for Hong Kong. Our Senior Consultant Anthony Hanson MW’s report on 2018 vintage follows. The breadth and depth here – 25 estates – offers a great deal of choice. We are fortunate to represent people so passionate about their work, and you can see from Anthony’s photos, taken candidly during the 2018 harvest, so many smiles.

Tasting 2018s from barrel in the domaines’ cellars in September and November 2019 with The Fine Wine Experience team was a real pleasure. Laying these wines down for short, mid or long-term cellaring, we wish that these smiles and the bottled sunshine of this vintage provide you many fine wine experiences to come and to share.

Santé, Linden Wilkie, Mike Wu and The Fine Wine Experience Team

⇡The Fine Wine Experience Team visited Burgundy during September 2019 and tasted the 2018 vintage firsthand. This photo was taken with Claude Dugat (4th from the left).

2018 BURGUNDY GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST Introduction by Our Resident Senior Consultant Anthony Hanson MWPhoto credit: © 2015 Nina Slavcheva

To understand the great success of the 2018 vintage in Burgundy, it helps to look back at the dormant period of the vines, over the winter 2017/18. Record amounts of rain fell in December, January and March – double the averages of the period 1961-2010. These rains allowed water tables in the ground to be amply topped up. This proved vitally important during the summer, as we shall see.

The growing season got off to a proper start from April onwards, then May stayed warm, with below average rainfall in both months. Towards the end of May and in early June rain fell regularly, with warm temperatures, allowing the flowering to proceed in excellent conditions. This is always beneficial to quality, as, after a speedy flowering, the grapes in a bunch will reach maturity at the same period. It also helps to lock in a good yield, which indeed proved to be the case.

Beautiful weather set in from 12th June, with virtually no rain, and heat-spikes at the end of the month. July was more mixed, with two localised hail-storms affecting Nuits Saint Georges, then temperatures climbed at the end of the month, regularly beyond 30 degrees. Rain was scarce, sunshine hours well above normal, temperatures also. The heat-wave lasted until 7 August. Some vines showed heat-stress, however, the plentiful water reserves built up during winter now proved to be a massive boon, allowing deep-rooted vines to continue ripening their fruit. Sunshine lasted up to and throughout the vintage, which began at the end of August/ early September.

June to September 2018 are amongst the driest seen since WWII, and for the 5 months from May onwards, sunshine hours were all above normal. Growers had been fearful that the heat-stresses might equal those seen during 2003, however 2018 is not a repeat of that torrid summer, and the style of the wines bears this out.

The 2018 Reds The grapes were extremely healthy. Very few needed removing from the sorting tables, except for any over-ripe bunches, or those caught by sun-burn. Sugar-levels were high, so many wines have natural alcohol levels of 13 and 13.5 degrees, and above – un-thinkable in Burgundy 3 decades or more ago. Sunshine allowed the colouring matter, aromas in the skins, and tannins, to reach full ripeness in this generous-sized crop. A low level of acidity in some wines has been compensated by fine tannins, to ensure smooth, long ageing. Depending on individual growers’ desires (which helped them to decide their picking dates), we have wines of classic balance, and others showing exceptional levels of richness, fruit density and power. This is a great vintage, with a wide variety of sumptuously thrilling wines, some for early and mid-term drinking, others for the long term.

The 2018 Whites Many growers were astonished by the plentiful yield of juice from the grape-bunches. There had been fears that the hot summer and early autumn would have caused evaporation, with yield reduction. But the water reserves from winter played their part in confounding those fears, and the result is a record-sized crop, in many villages. Early pickers, locking in natural acidity, usually did better than those who waited. Generally these wines will mature for drinking sooner than the 2017s. We have been careful to select wines which show no sign of dilution, and also particularly those with sufficient acidity to balance their opulent richness.

HOSPICES DE BEAUNE with personalised label service

The 2018 Hospices de Beaune wines will be ready to ship at the end of February. This is your last chance to purchase a ¼ barrel share (72 bottles) of these wines to be personalised for you by the Hospices de Beaune. Your customised label features your name on the official labels as buyer of the wine, but there is also flexibility – you could put the name of you and your spouse, or the names of your child (born 2018?) or children, or the name of your club, or restaurant, or group of friends, or company. Some buyers prefer to put a special message instead, or even a logo, and offer the bottles as gifts. Graphics files are also possible, as are Chinese characters. The team at The Fine Wine Experience has many years of experience in getting these labels right for our clients.

The wines have spent the past months being expertly tended at Domaine Michel Lafarge and Domaine Emmanuel Rouget, and are now almost ready to be shipped to you. Re-tasting them in barrel in November, we can assure you that you are in for a treat.

DOMAINE AMIOT-SERVELLEThe 8ha organic (since 2008) domaine was established in 1990 when Christian Amiot married Elisabeth Servelle. It’s located in the heart of Chambolle-Musigny. Daughter Prune joined as winemaker in 2011, and in 2017 the handover from Christian to Prune was complete. Full phenolic ripeness and a clean temperature-controlled method is the key, with the rest of the approach to winemaking varying depending on the vintage – for example the proportion of whole bunches used, and the amount of new oak (around 20% for village and 40-70% for the 1ers Crus). The work is done the same way for each vat of the various village and 1ers Crus as the goal is for the terroir to show through in the wines rather than the winemaking. The high proportion of limestone in the soil delivers minerally driven, elegantly fragrant wines (though Derrière-la-Grange is more masculine in style and is a specialty of the domaine).

The 2018s here show the ripe fullness of the vintage, with plenty of sweet fruit. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Charmes’ in particular has a beautiful scent of roses and extra silkiness in the texture. Overall the 2018 collection is generous and forward.

Amélie Berthaut

DOMAINE BERTHAUT-GERBETAt Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet there is a piece of stone that’s part of the house and inscribed with the following which likely best summarizes their philosophy and approach: ‘Bien faire vax miev que dir.’ This inscription translates to the following: doing right is better than talk. This family-owned domaine is based in Fixin and run by father and daughter team of Denis and Amélie Berthaut. By the 2013 vintage, Amélie’s father passed on the winemaking responsibilities to her, and she is continuing to take on more responsibilities.

The domaine comprises 16 hectares of vineyards in the villages of Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, and Vosne-Romanée. The vineyards are a combination of those through her father’s family, Domaine Denis Berthaut as well as part of the vineyards from her mother’s side, Domaine François Gerbet. Her father and mother each managed separate family domaines. In terms of their farming practices, they use a combination of organic and lutte-raisonnée.

And for winemaking, Amélie uses an increasing percentage of stems which can vary from 0-60% whole bunch. She ferments in cement tanks. Then, extraction is delicate with only pumping over at the end of the fermentation when punch downs are done by foot for on average about four times. Amélie keeps the cellar quite cold and uses low amounts of sulphur. For the oak regimen, she uses between 0-25% new oak and sometimes more depending on the cuvée; she is still working out what is best for each wine. The style here seems to be one driven towards improvement and always doing better while also adhering to tradition and being respectful of the terroir and heritage that has been passed down, the 2018s here show great typicity for terroir, with great freshness.

Christian Clerget

DOMAINE CHRISTIAN CLERGET The cellar for this estate is located in Vougeot and managed by Christian and his wife, Isabelle. The vineyards comprise 6 hectares located in Morey-St.-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée, and Vougeot. Christian and Isabelle believe that great wine is made from the best grapes, so they focus their attention on cultivating top-quality fruit in the vineyard. There is no use of herbicides, insecticides, or chemical treatments or fertilizers; their goal is to practice responsible viticulture. The grapes are meticulously scrutinized in the vineyard when picked and on the sorting table with only the best fruit kept.

Pigeages and pump-overs are kept at a minimum to allow the terroir to express itself in the wines. For maturation, the process is slow with aging in barrel between eighteen to twenty months and a maximum of 50% new oak used for the Échézeaux Grand Cru and Vougeot 1er Cru ‘Les Petits Vougeots’. The goal with the winemaking is to let the vineyard speak through in the wine.

What a great collection of 2018s Christian Clerget has made. The Morey-St-Denis ‘Les Crais’ shows nice minerality and freshness and a little grip; the Chambolle-Musigny from 12 parcels covering 7 lieux-dits beautifully represents the village style, with lovely perfume, elegance and sweetness of fruit; the Vosne-Romanée ‘Les Violettes’ has a lovely crushed forest berries nose and a rounder more melting feel on the palate, with a hint of cream (so delicious!); Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Charmes’ shows a ripe, vibrant nose, fresh with good intensity of fruit on the palate and fine chalky tannins; Vougeot 1er Cru ‘Les Petits Vougeots’ is mineral, bright, focused and elegant in style; and the Échézeaux Grand Cru, all from the lieu-dit ‘En Orveau’ is a mineral-styled expression of the appellation, supple, finely-structured and long on the palate. A great collection all the way through.

Claude Dugat

DOMAINE CLAUDE DUGATThe charming Claude Dugat has perhaps the best smile in Burgundy, and it is reflected in his approach to his beloved Gevrey-Chambertin which aim to express Pinot Noir’s “amiability”. The domaine is small, and all the vineyards Claude and his son Bertrand work are a short walk from their ancient cellars – the 13th Century ‘Celliers des Dimes’ (built on a Roman base) . There is always enormous intensity in Dugat’s wines – low yields, and immaculate fruit are then aged in a high proportion of new oak which the wines swallow completely. The wines age brilliantly, but recent vertical tastings also reveal how appealing they can be young too. Fragrance, fruit richness, and a lush supple texture are the hallmarks here. Every label is a benchmark for quality. Quantity is always the limitation.

(Please note that the offer for this domaine is the 2017 vintage new release.)

DOMAINE COMTE GEORGES DE VOGÜÉOne of the finest and most ancient domaines in Burgundy, emblematic of the noble finesse of Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine is the largest owner of Musigny Grand Cru.

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is unique in its long history, tracing its beginnings to the 15th century with ownership passing through 20 generations to the present proprietors. In 1925 it was inherited by Comte Georges de Vogüé, who ran the domaine for 52 years, and is now owned by his granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette.

Tasting all the 2018s from barrel with François Millet in November 2019, quality is clearly high, with all wines showing good depth, luscious fruit, but also fine acidity and minerality where you expect it. Millet felt it was also important to delay malolactic fermentation past the winter to help keep the freshness and terroir definition. 2018 also required a very delicate approach to extraction. The Bonnes Mares, for example, saw only one punch down during the entire élevage, and the Amoureuses no punch down – only ‘infusion’. The whole collection is top form in 2018, and it was a memorable tasting.

Vogüé especially rewards longer cellaring, and the good news here is that the domaine is blessed with a generous share of grands crus, and to an ‘inverse’ allocation is possible here – i.e. more grand cru red.

The Chambolle-Musigny village has a remarkably deep colour, a sweet gourmand nose; and is ripe, juicy and full on the palate, with lots of fruit concentration up front, a little firmness but also plenty of fleshiness. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru (all from Musigny plots) shows a fine nose with more minerality, ripe forest berries; lots of berry fruit on the palate too, but with a wonderful sense of lift and airiness, this is supple, and long with fine grip. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ‘Les Amoureuses’ shows a fine, detailed aroma, cherry pits, spices and black tea details and an overall fine mineral nose; there’s a lovely gentle sweetness and scent that starts forward and pushes back. There’s a lot of detail, finesse and layering, and real harmony. The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a particularly deep colour, lots of blue and black fruit, this is succulent and round-textured, fleshy and seductive with a really mouth-filling finish and great length. A terrific Bonnes-Mares. The Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru was just a little more closed when we tasted it, with a fine but shy nose; the palate shows plenty of velvet, good concentration of fruit and depth, minerality, layering, and plenty of very fine tannins providing a clear frame to the wine, and indicating that long cellaring will be rewarded and required here. A majestic Musigny.

A small quantity of 2017s are also available – please enquire.

DOMAINE CONFURON-GINDRE Domaine Confuron-Gindre sits at the heart of Vosne-Romanée on the Rue de la Tâche. The estate and winemaking are now recently managed by next generation, Edouard Confuron-Gindre, who is taking the domaine in a very good direction. We are pleased to be able to import these Vosne-Romanées offering such superb value for money.

The 2018s show good promise. The Bourgogne Rouge comes from plots low down in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, sees no new oak and offers a round fruitiness and gentle tannins. The Vosne villages from several plots including a little 1er Cru fruit, is supple with good structure and rich fruit with a soft finish. The Nuits St Georges from plots more on the Vosne-side of the appellation, is tight, but fine, with good freshness. The Colombière sees 40% whole bunches, a floral nose, rich fruit and fleshiness and fine length. The Chaumes, 25% whole bunch and 50% new oak, with with century old vines next to Malconsorts, ha some spiciness and depth and fine length. The Echezeaux comes 50/50 from ‘Les Rouges du Bas’ and ‘Les Treux’ and saw 20% whole bunches and 50% new oak, and is fresh, spicy, full-bodied with a dense fleshiness and excellent length.

DOMAINE DENIS BACHELETDomaine Denis Bachelet is a family estate that’s tiny in size but big in quality. Denis Bachelet took over the domaine in 1983, and he manages the 4 hectares with his wife Marie-Jo. Since 2007, his son Nicolas and later on (2017) his partner, Doriane have been working at the domaine too. Humble, quiet and respected family, they work hard in their vineyards to produce the best grapes possible every vintage. Their aim is to produce delicate and precise wines.

For the viticulture, they practice lutte raisonnée and tend the vines according to the cycles of the moon. Denis believes that good wine is made first in the vineyard.

After careful selection of the grapes during the harvest, they are put onto a vibrating sorting table for additional sorting in the cellar. Then, they are 100% de-stemmed prior to being crushed. The grapes undergo cool maceration for approximately one week prior to fermentation which takes place with indigenous yeast.

For the ageing, Denis is mindful about using new oak simply to refine the harsh tannins sometimes found in Gevrey-Chambertin rather than

Denis Bachelet with grapes arriving at the winery on 5 Sept. Hot and sunny, grape temperature on arrival 27 degrees C, so these will be cooled to 15 degrees C to

allow gentle colour and aroma extractions, with slow start to fermentation.

to have the oak speak out or add flavours to the wine. The Gevrey-Chambertin sees approximately one third new oak and the premiers crus and grands crus receive 50% new oak. The ageing is for approximately 16-18 months depending on the cuvée and vintage.

Denis Bachelet is a benchmark producer for Charmes-Chambertin. He owns just 0.43 hectares of this grand cru vineyard, but it’s the best part right between the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-St.-Denis. It’s split into two plots located in the center of ‘Aux Charmes’. The vines in this vineyard were planted between 1907 and 1917, so they are very old vines. And the vineyard contains chalky, clay soil.

The wines of Domaine Denis Bachelet are special because they are small production; they don’t make many wines and only one grand cru, so their attention is focused. In addition, the one grand cru they make is Charmes-Chambertin, and the portion of that grand cru vineyard that they own is the very best. And, Denis and Nicolas focus on making good wine in the vineyard first with oak being used thoughtfully just to refine the tannins.

(Please note that the offer for this domaine is the 2017 vintage new release.)

DOMAINE EMMANUEL ROUGETThese wines are made by Emmanuel’s son Guillaume, a sensitive and talented pair of hands. The Vosne-Romanée village and Echézeaux shown here are benchmark quality for the appellations but do try the range as the same hard work applies throughout.

In style, Beaumonts is fragrant and fleshy with an enticing ‘Vosne-spice’ character – it’s the most seductive of the three. The Echézeaux is perhaps the grandest of the three, showing power and concentration with supple texture. The Cros Parantoux is perhaps the slowest to evolve, the most reserved, with intensity close to that of the Echézeaux, but with real tensile strength, precision and purity of expression. It is the most intellectually interesting of the three in my view but also requires the most patience.

(Please note that the offer for this domaine is the 2017 vintage new release except Bourgogne Aligote, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Blanc & Bourgogne Passetoutgrain.)

MAISON ÉTIENNE SAUZETBenoît Riffault is today making at Étienne Sauzet some of the most compelling white Burgundies available, in a classic, transparent style. You see ‘Maison’ rather than ‘Domaine’ on the label, but the estate owns most of what they make – 10 hectares in the best addresses in Puligny-Montrachet and another 5ha in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, and with just a little fruit bought for Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet from contracts with the same grower that have been in place since 1991. Biodynamic for the past ten years and 100% certified, the estate has a view on the long-term. “We prefer to work like this – it’s the spirit. It’s nature. We work after somebody, and before somebody else. It’s a responsibility”, said Riffault on our November 2019 visit to their cellars. To taste here is to have a masterclass in the different soils, expositions, elevations of the various terroirs of Puligny-Montrachet – there is such clarity and precision in the wines.

The 2018s here are impressive. You see the style immediately with the village-level Puligny-Montrachet, from 12 plots, it shows a juicy freshness, elegance with mid-palate weight and a wonderfully long finish, it is a textbook expression of the village. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Perrières’ sits at the beginning of the slope but is nonetheless quite mineral, but also ripe and generous in style, with fine acidity and a sleek feel, lots of appeal. ‘Les Referts’ has more clay and more power, this is so full and creamy with nice balance and energy. ‘Les Combettes’ is more reserved, tight, mid-weight and compact, and will reward a little more cellaring. The Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet is a small production from vines planted in 1936. It is very fine and elegant, with mineral length, such a high class wine. The Bâtard-Montrachet couldn’t be more different – so immediately pleasing on the nose, with a touch of crème-caramel on the low-key nose, more richness and fullness on the palate, more power, but still in a refined style, with sufficient elegance. The Chevalier-Montrachet is ripe yet restrained with a note of white peach, it is very complete on the palate, grand yet evenly shaped with fine minerality and great length. And finally, the Montrachet – from grapes on the Chassagne-Montrachet side has an ample grand nose, complex and already expressive, it has the natural concentration, grandness and more glycerine/concentrated mouthfeel, with a nice flow to a long finish.

Jean-Marie Fourrie © Linden Wilkie

DOMAINE FOURRIERToday, this domaine requires no introduction, Jean-Marie Fourrier’s wines have acquired cult status amongst Burgundy enthusiasts. Tasting in his cellar is a revelation. Extreme meticulousness in the vineyard is his secret, then relative simplicity in winemaking. Henri Jayer was his mentor (he worked the 1988 vintage). Aromatic and fruit intensity are hallmarks, combined with textural finesse.

André Esmonin

DOMAINE FRÉDÉRIC ESMONINThe family estate behind many of the great Leroy-labelled Gevrey wines of the ‘50s and ‘60s, Domaine Frédéric Esmonin began domaine-bottling themselves in the 1980s. Quality today is of a very high standard, yet still sufficiently under the radar to offer great value. Vineyards are especially old (40~50 years+), wines are made with finesse of fruit and texture, allowing for young- drinking appeal, but the depth and complexity of the climats they work are clearly in evidence. The Mazy-Chambertin shows typical density of black fruit and licorice we come to expect, the Ruchottes-Chambertin, from a parcel neighbouring Rousseau’s ‘Clos des Ruchottes’, the silky airiness, minerality and supple succulence we expect. The ‘secret weapon’ here is the 1er Cru ‘Estournelles St Jacques’ – Esmonin and Jadot. This is a wonderful sunny south-facing vineyard that delivers a real succulence of fruit and natural concentration from small grapes.

Tasting from barrel in November we were impressed by the 2018s here. The ‘Estournelles St Jacques’, bottled already in October 2019, had a ripe, toasty nose with lots of fleshy dark fruit and toasty oak still to knit. Should resolve well in the cellar. ‘Mazis Chambertin’ shows lots of dark fruit and a little toasty oak on the nose, the palate shows impressive dark fruit, juicy freshness, lots of perfume, and plenty of old school grip on the long finish. ‘Ruchottes-Chambertin’ has a wonderful highly expressive fragrance, is on the higher register toward red fruits, and has fineness and minerality. Elegant grand cru.

DOMAINE HARMAND-GEOFFROYThis small family domaine are Gevrey-Chambertin specialists, making delicious, typically dark-fruit and wild spice character wines. Both the fruit-laden village wine and the deep, brooding grand cru offer terrific value. The domaine is 9ha of vineyards all planted to Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin. The viticulture and winemaking are both traditional offering a wonderful opportunity to truly get to know the top-notch qualities the vineyards of Gevrey have to offer.

The 2018s here are of high quality and generally show a firm and reserved expression that will reward a little bit longer in the cellar than some of the recent vintages here. So if you are a follower of H-G, stock up a little more on the accessible 2017s and put these ‘18s away for a bit longer. It’s worth it. Philippe says that natural alcohol of around 14% was a feature of 2018, and that no adjustment was needed in acidity because he did not de-leaf the vines, which helped retain natural freshness.

The regular Gevrey-Chambertin village shows good fruit with ripe juicy cherry. The ‘VV’ is darker and deeper. ‘La Perriere’ has a very dark confit fruit aroma, is structured and backward, with ripe supple tannin. ‘La Bossiere’ has both elegance and strength and in the sunny 2018 vintage benefitted greatly from its elevated position. Good intensity freshness and length. ‘Lavaux St Jacques’ is dark, concentrated and brooding, with good freshness and plenty of minerality. The grip of classic Lavaux is here for sure. Mazis has really lovely fruit definition with a note of boysenberry, spices. “This is a big black fruit beast, but a good one!” I noted in enthusiasm. A powerful but fresh Mazis-Chambertin.

DOMAINE HEITZ-LOCHARDETThe winemaking tradition at Heitz-Lochardet dates back to 1857. Domaine Heitz-Lochardet is located in Chassagne-Montrachet and was founded in the mid-1980s by Armand Heitz’s parents Brigette and Christian with initially just 5 hectares. Armand studied oenology and then decided to take over his family’s vines after completing his studies in 2011. For years, his mother, Brigette had contracted these vines to Maison Joseph Drouhin. And since taking over Armand has sought about regaining control of more of the vines under the domaine. He made his first vintage in 2013 with the help of consulting oenologist Ludovic Pierrot who had spent eight years working with Anne-Claude Leflaive at Domaine Leflaive. Armand farms the vineyards using biodynamic practices and his winemaking style is traditional in approach with the use of new oak kept at a minimum, usually around just 20-25%.

Armand represents one of the young rising stars among the winemakers of the 21st Century who are learning and offering a fresh perspective on winemaking. He believes that all parts of the vine are integral to making a living wine which is part of why he uses whole bunch in his winemaking (most of the reds are 50%-100% whole bunch).

The wines produced here express their terroir while also being quite giving in their fruit expression. The first red wine in the portfolio is Folie Sauvauge which is filled with bright and lively wild red berry fruits and is medium bodied; it’s easy drinking and a great choice for having on its own, slightly chilled. It’s a blend of 50% Gamay from plots of Domaine de la Combe Vineuse in Beaujolais located on the hillsides and grown on blue stone schist soils. Then, the remaining 50% of the blend is Pinot Noir grapes from Meursault and Volnay grown on clay and limestone soils.

The top of range here for the reds are the Pommard 1er Cru ‘Rugiens’ and Volnay 1er Cru ‘Taillepieds’, and the impact of the use of 100% stems comes through in the 2018s. One of the positive impacts Armand finds from the use of stems is that it helps keep more sugar in the wines. Thus, the pleasing ripeness levels they experienced in the 2018s come through. The ‘Rugiens’ comes from the top part of the vineyard where the soil is made up of more rocks and limestone, so as a result the vines struggle, and the resulting wine has power and concentration. In the 2018, these elements come through combined with sweet spice and minerally notes and red cherry fruit. In their plot of ‘Taillepieds’ the soil is quite similar to that in ‘Rugiens’ and as a result the 2018 is a more masculine style of Volnay with structured tannins, a minerally backbone, rose floral aromas, and dark raspberry fruit with depth on the palate.

For the whites, the highlights are the Meursault 1er Cru ‘Les Perrières’ and Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru. ‘Les Perrières’ comes from an area with lots of stones in the soil. The 2018 shows aromatic intensity on the nose with abundant fruit character from flavours of peaches and other stone fruits with a precise and minerally finish. For the Chevalier-Montrachet the soils are poor naturally limiting the yields such that the resulting wine is very expressive; it was the standout wine of the tasting. The Chevalier showed riper flavours of tropical fruits, nectarines and mandarin citrus with deep concentration and a long length. The body is fuller and deeper than ‘Les Perrières’. The goal of finding balance between sugars and acidity and the respect for nature come through in these wines.

Charles van Canneyt

DOMAINE HUDELOT-NOËLLAT / CHARLES VAN CANNEYTOne of Burgundy’s finest domaines in land holdings but also wines. In the past couple of years the chance to taste ex-domaine cellared bottles of Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant from vintages like 1978, 1980, 1985 and 1990, it is clear that these are amongst the most compelling examples of any domaine and of a classical style. Charles van Canneyt took over from his grandfather Alain Hudelot-Noëllat in 2008, and has proven himself more than a safe pair of hands with such jewel appellations. Quality here is very high, and the sense of finesse increased.

Tasting the 2018s here was a real treat. Terroirs stood out clearly cask to cask, with impressive concentration and intensity, with that Hudelot-Noëllat signature of finesse. Followers of this domaine will not be disappointed.

Charles van Canneyt For some time now Charles van Canneyt has been making waves and garnering high scores for his wines at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. Since 2012, he has been making small quantities of very fine ‘micro-négoce’ wines from top Burgundy appellations. These wines are impressive, worthy of a place in your cellar. A chance to taste some back vintages in November 2018 affirmed their age worthiness too.

Jean-Marc Millot

DOMAINE JEAN-MARC MILLOTSince 1992, Jean-Marc Millot has been growing grapes and bottling his own wines. This domaine is located in the village of Nuits-St.-Georges and owns some of the best vineyard sites in Vosne-Romanée including three grands crus – Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, and Clos Vougeot – as well as one of the top premier cru – ‘Les Suchots’. In 2014, Jean-Marc’s daughter, Alix, joined the domaine. She took on the responsibility of vineyard management and winemaking. The farming here is organic, and the vines are very old with the average age being 50 plus years old. Thus, the wines produced are concentrated with a long length.

For the winemaking, the cellar is kept very cold promoting a slow fermentation. And élevage takes approximately twelve to sixteen months. The resulting wines are juicy displaying purity of fruit and in a drinkable style while also offering complexity and depth.

The ‘Falques’ is ripe, lively in a satisfyingly chewy style. ‘Les Suchots’ is fine and fragrant with some spiciness, and layered, round and opulent on the palate. Clos Vougeot is reserved with a lot of depth, good fruit and fine, very Clos Vougeot tannins, minerality and length. It’s for longer cellaring. Echézeaux is fragrant, fine, full and silky and full of flavour. The ‘Cuvée 1949’ is, as you might expect, from a single parcel of vines in the Echézeaux du Dessus lieu-dit, planted in 1949, so very special. Grands Echézeaux shows richness and opulence, in a plump softer style.

Xavier Horiot

DOMAINE LAUNAY-HORIOTIn Xavier Horiot you see a calm yet determined man – goal-oriented with a sense of precision. It’s a personality that no doubt served him well as a software engineer, and before that as a fighter pilot in the French Air Force. It took him many years to win control of his family domaine – something many people told him he would not achieve. But he did – after several years in French family court.

In our view the wine world is better off because of his victory. To taste in his cellar is to experience bright, clear wines of specific terroir character. The Burgundy-loving wine community, smart as it is, we are sure will discover the superb quality emanating from Domaine Launay-Horiot and eagerly seek its wines. The domaine includes rare ownership of vines in Côte de Nuits grands crus vineyards Latricières-Chambertin and Chambertin itself. These are as wonderful as you might expect and will help gain him a following. But this is also a Pommard domaine, with some of the very best plots in the village – including a fine collection of 1ers Crus. We can’t wait for you to taste them – for us they were a revelation.

The percentage of new oak has increased in the 2018s, and Xavier bottled them in November 2019 to preserve their freshness and natural terroirs identity. The ‘Perrières’ has a fine blackcurrant and red fruits expression, attractive freshness and fine tannins. ‘Chaponnières’ has fine fruit, a touch of savouriness, good depth and chalky tannins. ‘Rugiens Bas’ is vibrant with natural concentration and finesse. It needs a little more time for the oak to integrate. Latricières-Chambertin is fresh and airy, spicy and really long, elegant and intense on the palate. It’s a quintessential Latricières. The Chambertin has a wonderfully fresh and expressive nose and very complex fruit, and good energy and length. The oak will take time to dovetail in, but all the elements are here.

© Domaine Laurent Roumier

DOMAINE LAURENT ROUMIERLaurent Roumier is the grandson of Georges Roumier and cousin of Christophe Roumier of Domaine Georges Roumier. Laurent’s father, Alain, was the cellar master at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé for thirty years(from 1950 through to the 1980s). The cellars of Domaine Laurent Roumier are located next to Domaine Georges Roumier.

Domaine Laurent Roumier started in 1991 with 4 hectares Laurent rented from the Roumier family. Then, during the 1990s, he purchased 6 hectares of Haute Côtes de Nuits and since has purchased more Chambolle-Musigny.

Currently, the estate comprises approximately 12 hectares. Laurent farms the vineyards without using herbicides or fertilizers.

Likely the top vineyards in the range are the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru which was transferred to Laurent Roumier in 1997, and the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru which was also inherited from the Georges Roumier estate. The portion that he makes his Clos Vougeot from is in the lieu-dit of Grand Maupertuis which is the higher part of Clos Vougeot bordering the grand cru vineyard of Grands Echézeaux and not far from the grand cru vineyard of Musigny, so it’s a very fine area of this grand cru vineyard. Laurent Roumier’s Bonnes-Mares is located between that of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé and Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier and is also considered a prime section of Bonnes-Mares.

For the winemaking, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and fermented in concrete vats. During alcoholic fermentation, the practices of pumping over and punching down are done every day. The wine is decanted into vats for twelve hours, and then it goes into barrel. The percentage of new oak varies depending on the vineyard or cuvée (50% new for grands crus and premiers crus and 30% new for village level and 10% new for Bourgogne Haute Côtes de Nuits). The élevage usually lasts between fifteen to eighteen months. Laurent uses the same barrels and oak as his cousin Christophe. The style here is traditional in character while being more accessble in its youth.

CHÂTEAU DE LA MALTROYEThe 2018 whites here show plenty of unctuous richness, generosity, though still within the expression of each plot. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Morgeot Vigne Blanche’ has a lovely creaminess, a touch of smokiness, moderate weight and nice acidity and texture. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Clos du Château’ has a sweeter tone, some honeysuckle, and fruit tending toward yellow banana ripeness, it is ample and satisfyingly rich on the palate, some minerality. It is a grander sort of wine. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Grandes Ruchottes’ has a more compact, mineral, almost saline feel, with notes of toasted hazelnut, a sleek texture, good minerality and energy. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Dents de Chien’ has a grand, ripe smoky/nutty nose; a very fine layered and complex expression on the palate, creaminess and high energy, and is truly exceptional (though painfully rare).

DOMAINE MICHEL BOUZEREAUDomaine Michel Bouzereau tells you a lot about the wines here long before you taste. The beautiful property and garden in Meursault are immaculately kept, and when you begin to taste with Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau at his spotless table, he pours precisely into Zalto tasting glasses. This is someone who takes his work very seriously. When you taste the wines there is clarity, tension, precision and finesse in each one. Jean-Baptiste is a seventh generation owner of great parcels of land here, combined to make 12.5ha. He believes in strict de-budding to reduce yields. No chemical products are used in the vineyards. Harvest is strictly by hand, and grape pressing is done very slowly(reds are fully de-stemmed). Everything is on its native yeasts. Ageing is in barrels for 12 to 16 months before bottling. Work is done according to the lunar calendar. The Meursault and Puligny collection here is very strong as you would expect. Don’t overlook the Bougogne Blanc – which comes from the Puligny and Meursault areas.

Alvina Pernot

DOMAINE PAUL PERNOT / ALVINA PERNOTDomaine Paul Pernot has one of the grandest holdings in Puligny-Montrachet, including an enviable number of 1ers Crus as well as grands crus Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. Recognised for their high quality, much of what they produce goes to supply négociants in Burgundy, while the finest of their wines are bottled at the domaine, and offered in this list below. The style here is rounded in texture, supple, creamy without being heavy, mineral without being shrill, with generous fruit concentration. The 1er Cru selection includes some monopoles, including - ‘Champ Canet Clos de la Jaquelotte’, and ‘Les Chalumaux’.

Alvina Pernot The latest generation of the Pernot family, and with a desire to make her own mark, the 2018 vintage sees the debut of the “micro-négoce” eponymous label of Alvina Pernot, with her husband Philippe Abadie. To be clear though, all of the fruit here is from her parents’ domaine – Paul Pernot, with parcels chosen by Alvina especially to express her style. “We are looking to make wines with a bit more tension, so for example we chose the highest altitude parcel of the family’s four plots in Les Folatières’. Just 10,000 bottles were made in 2018, and many of the cuvées are single barrel. Here is your chance to secure bottles of wine from a name I am sure you are going to hear more about in the coming years.

The Côte d’Or Blanc comes from Bourgogne AOC plots around the village of Puligny-Montrachet. It’s bright with good mouthfeel texture and a mix of fresh apples and patisserie on the nose and palate. Super value. Puligny “VV” from three parcels is full and lively, with the elegance of Puligny and the sunshine feel of 2018. ‘La Pièce Sous Le Bois’ has a beautiful scent of apples and some florals, and is taut, with good concentration. ‘Les Folatières’ was a little reduced on the nose in November 2019, but with good minerality, richness and acidity. ‘Les Chalumaux’ is fresh and airy, high energy with a good depth of fruit, it flows to a long finish. ‘Clos de la Garenne’ is bright and supple, again a little reduced on tasting. The single red in the collection – ‘Bievaux’ from Santenay, was 100% de-stemmed, and saw no new oak. Fresh, with good fruit was, I noted, ‘a good jolly mouthful’!

“It’s a great vintage,” says Christophe Perrot-Minot standing in Chambertin Clos de Bèze vineyard Mon. 10 Sept. 2018

© Anthony Hanson MW, September 2018

DOMAINE PERROT-MINOTChristophe is very pleased with the quality of fruit in 2018. Was there a challenge, we asked? “The problem in general with 2018 was the possibility of too much extraction and dryness.” Perrot-Minot did a lot of green harvest in 2018 to ensure sufficiently low yields for the quality he demands. “A lot of parcels had hydric stress and so in each parcel it was necessary to declassify a part of it.” Given the intense summer, alcohols here are admirably moderate – a maximum of 13.6%, Christophe explained. As always the collection shows precision, very clean, ripe wines with superb definition and a supple texture from healthy, ripe fruit. Gevrey-Chambertin has a fresh, vibrant nose, with nice liveliness and juicy dark fruit. The ‘Rue de Vergy’ has bright red fruit and fine minerality. The Nuit-St-Georges has a fine and quite complex aroma and great palate-coating fruit. Chambolle-Musigny is fine, with elegance and freshness. The Vosne Champs Perdrix is sapid, focused, pure, with a very fine grip. ‘Beaumonts’ shows good intensity and length. ‘La Combe d’Orveau Ultra’ is juicy, fresh, round and with a long, floral-edged finish. Quite special. The ‘Richemone Ultra’ shows elegance combined with great natural concentration and very fine tannins. Mazoyères is bolder, darker, sweet, with great depth. Charmes is detailed and spicy, soft and gently chalky with a terrific nose. Chapelle has gorgeous fruit, is voluminous and round and impressive. Chambertin has beautiful fruit, elegant weight and style, and is fresh, pure and complete. The Bèze is spicier, fine, concentrated, palate-coating with a touch of blueberry.

Chantal Tortochot

DOMAINE TORTOCHOTChantal Tortochot is very pleased with 2018. “We had a warm summer, good yields, but there was water in the soil, so it was fine. We had a fresh, classical vintage”. The collection is one of her best yet.

‘Les Corvées’ is fresh, a little floral, and the palate has a lovely flow, moderate weight, and morish sapidity, with a saline edge. It’s so appealing already. ‘Lavaux St Jacques’ has fine fruit on the nose, good concentration of dark fruit, lots of sap and a stickiness to the tannins, very good length. ‘Les Champeaux’ shows a wilder and more high-register expression, a more fine-structured, taut mouthfeel, dark berry taste. Charmes was just a little too reduced to judge in November 2019, but has a nice round feel on the palate. Will need some time. Chambertin, also a little reduced, was fine-textured, elegant and concentrated. The grands crus will need time.
