Brush Making, as I was taught by Susan Russell In the late 1980's I attended Menucha, a retreat for calligraphers in the Portland area. Susan Russell was also there and my good fortune was getting to know her over the next 4 decades. Her lively red hair and enthusiastic demeanor portrayed her accurately. Knowing her was like knowing the power of the wind. She did everything with gusto. So it is my pleasure to pass on her legacy of "Brush Making". I will share a bit how "real" brush makers" do it, then, translate it into easy steps for our members to follow. We can talk about the hair/fur used (Fumiko and I have different types available); Pat Bruzas is providing the bamboo for the handle for everyone; and I'll provide the threat and glue to wrap the hair/fur and glue it into the bamboo. Members should be warned that the glue is strong and we should use it in a well-ventilated area. It doesn't take long when you know what you're doing, but as a demo and a "hands-on" opportunity it may take 90 minutes or so, it all depends upon the member. I will have a handout with step-by-step instructions and illustrations. I am looking forward to doing this for our group. I love the people in PSSA. This should be fun for all.... I was reading a Chinese book about scholars of the past. Did you know that well-rounded and experienced artists made their own supplies including brushes and chops? It was all part of the art of being an artist. Kathryn Cecelia "KaCe" Whitacre

From an email note by Sally Filiault: "I am really, really sorry to share with you that I just got an email saying that sweet Susan Morrisson died a few days ago on Feb. 22nd. So hard to believe; she was so strong, engaged and ready to share a laugh or smile at whatever. I could totally see why she became a minister. What a natural! And none of this: 'my way or the highway' nonsense. I wish her well on her journey home.

Susan was always TRUE. Like the PBS' Children's Host, Mr. Rodgers, a beautiful friend in the neighborhood. Susan was the most PRESENT person I knew and you could instantly feel that even though her body is no longer with us, her PURE LOVE is. She gave the world exactly what it needed: LOVE."

And from The Seattle Times Obituaries, March 4, 2018: Susan Morrisson,79, died peacefully on February 22, 2018, surrounded by her family......She approached her entire life with gusto, dedication, and adventurous, hearty engagement. A champion for social justice, she gave her time and leadership to creating positive change for children, immigrants, the homeless, sustainability and community. Her nature-based spiritual orientation guided her interests and contributions, culminating in ordination by the Interfaith Institute of Berkley, after completing a M. of Divinity from Seattle U. She loved birding, camping, and wildcrafting northwest edibles. She curated her home to become a wildlife sanctuary and home to bald eagles, owls, deer and native plants. She was an avid artist throughout her life, creating works in stained glass, pottery and, most recently, Sumi painting: showing and selling her work in several venues. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in May, 2016, and faced this condition with strength, courage, and grace - as she did with all things.

A celebration of her life will be held at Eastshore Unitarian Universalist Church in Bellevue on Saturday, March 24th, at 2pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be given to the Audubon Society.

Darlene Dihel reported her recent experience teaching Sumi to kids: March 10th, Saturday, I taught sumi painting to LOTS of kids at Kent Kids' Arts Day for 6 straight hours. I've been doing this event since 2002 and it is as much fun as it was the first time. I just found out that the event started 30 years ago. There were about 12 artists and crafters who shared what they do with lots of eager kids of all ages. It was almost a record for attendance and 100+ kids came to my table to sumi paint. They all took home a treasure - a painting on a bookmark, scroll, fan, or just the painting on rice paper. Fortunately I had helpers from high school and college who volunteered to help me. They were awesome.

From Alice Liou with photos by Christelle Tomasini: Four PSSA members demonstrated Sumi art and calligraphy at the March 3 launch party of the new Center for Washington Cultural Traditions in Seattle. During her demo, Fumiko Kimura talked about the history of Sumi art and painted a beautiful ascending dragon inspired by the calligraphy. In the display showroom, Bill Havens and Christelle Tomasini showed people some techniques of Sumi art, and Alice Liou explained the principles of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy while writing special characters and names for visitors.

SUMI INSIGHTS: Birth of Haiga in PSSA

Floating in the middle of the South Salish Sea in a rowboat reading Sam Hamill’s tiny book of translated Haiku poetry by the three masters, Basho, Buson and Issa; The Sound of Water, seems a most unlikely place for beginnings. Haiku not only fed my love of words, but also ignited my imagination for images. I had to share this epiphany with my friend and sensei, Fumiko Kimura.

V.: “Fumiko, haiku and sumi-e are an amazing match – so sparse.”

F.: “Yes” , with a twinkle in her eye she continued, “ It is called Haiga , when a simple, yet profound poem and an image are spontaneously created together.”

V.: “I have an idea: do you think that our sumi artists would paint from a haiku they selected?”

F.: “Yes,!! what are you thinking?”

V.: “What if?” (gulp) "I’ve never done it before, I co-chaired such a show?”

F.: “Go for it!” was her encouraging, gentle nudge. Little did I know Fumiko’s life force for self renewal and engaging others in finding their own expression was at work. Lucky me!

We had started on a path where there was none –

“What if?” the Sandpiper Gallery could be the venue?” Reni Moriarity dialed a gallery owner's number and handed me the phone. There was no turning back; ‘the venue was set for June/July, 2010, in Tacoma,at the Sandpiper Gallery.

Haiku Masters Inspire Sumi-e.

Announcing the exhibit criteria to our artists, 'to paint from a select haiku by Basho, Buson or Issa', gave rise to many questions and surprising uncertainty. To ease the artists' expressed insecurity and confusion we provided additional resources: articles, discussions, even a ‘Selinda Sheridan & Fumiko Kimura’ workshop! This was still not enough. . . . then it happened again.

V.: “What if?” we contacted Mr. Sam Hamill?" Thanks to technology, he agreed to present a program and jury our exhibit; all of this arranged while he was in South America. Imagine the brevity!

Our PSSA’s Haiku Masters Inspire Sumi-e exhibit's success inspired Fumiko and me to study Haiga. For months we agonized and struggled with the study; then the question arose again.

F.: ”What if?” we gather together with others PSSA members interested in Haiga as see what happens? I’ve spoken to some who are interested.“

February 20, 2012, became Haiga Adventures' first meeting. Eleven sumi artists gathered at the Fircrest Community Center: generally expressing varying levels of curiosity, doubt and an underlying wonder-filled enthusiasm for such an adventure. To keep the focus on discussion and learning process, an effort was made to have a few structured parameters, yet not too many. The elements of study included: identifying resources, discussion, sharing individual haiku, sumi-e images and Haiga with options for critique and time for formal study.

"It is the Practice that Teaches" The platform for communication originally began as a monthly e-mail journal sent to participants; now we contribute to our PSSA newsletter.

Sumi: The Way of the Brush In 2014 PSSA’s program chair requested a presentation from our Haiga Adventures group. The PSSA membership could not have given more support (as they always do) to our group as we attempted to explain our process in a concrete fashion. Since then, PSSA has embraced Haiga Adventures in such activities as including Haiga in exhibits, presentations, programs, etc. In 2016 , we were offered a board position with a budget!

Kado: The Way of Poetry In our second year, Dorothy Matthew made contact with Michael Dylan Welsh of Haiku North West and asked, “what if?”. Since then we’ve been invited to their Haiku Annual Seabeck Retreat; displaying our Haiga, teaching classes, and even displaying our Haiga at Wing Luke Museum during a Haiku NW meeting. In February, 2018, Tanya McDonald presented a program on Haiku to the PSSA Membership Meeting.
