The community of Fairvale High School shares a visionwhich is committed to:–

Fairvale High School has an enrolment of 1440 students,including 89% from a language background other thanEnglish. The 112 teaching staff, 30 administrative staff andthree deputy principals are highly motivated andexperienced. This is a high performing and high demandschool with a strong learning culture and high expectationsof students. The school has outstanding outcomes in theHigher School Certificate, excellent value–added literacyand numeracy results and gifted and talented enrichmentprograms. Excellent student welfare and learningsupport programs operate, with highly successful studentleadership. The school has strong links with localcommunities and partner primary schools.

The school has undertaken an extensive evaluation andconsultation process in the development of this plan. Thishas included an executive review of the strategies andoutcomes from the 2015–2017 school plan. Student surveydata from the whole school Tell Them From Me Survey,SRC consultation, and student conferences. Communityconsultation through the school P&C, Community LiaisonOfficers, and extensive feedback through the 2016 and2017 Whole School two day Conferences that focused onStudent and Staff Wellbeing. Staff survey data from theFocus on Learning teacher survey and a series of wholeschool, executive and senior executive focus groupconsultations that followed assisted in interrogating thisdata. The school has also extensively evaluated bothinternal and external academic data including Year 7 and 9NAPLAN results, VALID Data and HSC results.

Purpose:

The Fairvale School Community is aspirational and hashigh expectations for an educational experience thatprovides the best possible opportunities for their children.Through a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and qualityteaching practices we are committed to ensuring that everyFairvale High student has the best opportunity possible toachieve academic success. This will be driven by ateaching staff that are well trained, supported andresourced, working in a collaborative and reflectivemanner.

Purpose:

The Fairvale High School community is located in aculturally and economically diverse area of NSW. Theschool is committed to ensuring that every student isknown, cared for and valued. Through the provision ofchallenging and engaging learning opportunities andwellbeing support, the impact of disadvantage is reducedand individual and community growth in learning andwellbeing is maximised. This will be facilitated by a highlytrained multidisciplinary team, working in a structured andcollaborative manner.

Fairvale High School recognises that the movement ofstudents from a range of educational settings to highschool, and their inevitable movement into tertiary study orwork creates challenges. The school aims to ensure thatthese transitions are well supported and highly successfulthrough partnerships with feeder schools, a community ofhigh schools, tertiary links and employer connections. It isadvantageous for all young people to finish school wellprepared for higher education, training and work. As thestudent population continues to grow, Fairvale High Schoolwill see that the infrastructure meets the needs of studentsand staff in the new building construction, enablingfuture–focused learning and teaching.

Strategic Direction 1: Excellence in Teaching & Learning

Purpose

Improvement Measures

Increase the percentage of teaching staffvoluntarily participating in the schoolsCollaborative and Reflective Practiceprogram to 60%  by 2020.

To increase the percentage of studentsachieving at or above expected growth inYear 9 NAPLAN Reading and Numeracyfrom 59% (average of past 3 years) to 65%and 77% to 82% respectively.

To decrease the percentage of studentsachieving a Band 2 or below result in theHSC from 14.5% (average of the past 3years) to below 10%

Teaching staff will be active participants ina structured program that shares andenhances professional practice through aseries of collaborative lesson preparation,shared class observations and follow upreflection.

Students

Students will be supported using a broadrange of strategies to improve their literacyand numeracy capabilities and developauthentic and sustainable post schoolpathways.

Parents/Carers

Parents and carers will be an integral partof the post–school destination planningthrough a coordinated, data drivenapproach.

The school will utilise RAM funding toemploy a Head Teacher Teaching andLearning on higher duties to lead thecoordination of the collaborative andreflective practice (CARP) program. Thisrole will be supported by an externalconsultant.

The school will utilise RAM funding toemploy a Head Teacher Literacy/EALD onhigher duties to lead a literacy program thatsupports 2 periods per week of dedicatedliteracy classes to most students in Years7–9 as well as faculty support in thedevelopment of strategies to analyseliteracy data and target areas of weakness.

The school will apply a data drivenapproach to Stage 6 subject selectionguidance utilising Year 9 NAPLAN Datatogether with Year 10 Minimum Standardstesting and internal assessment data toguide student choice and communityawareness.

Strategic Direction 2: Supporting Student Learning and Wellbeing

Purpose

The school will achieve a 10% increase inpositive Sentral entries and a 10%decrease in negative entries for students inStage 4 by 2020.

Fairvale High School will develop adocumented system of student leadershipacross each stage of student learning. Witha 10% increase in student leadershipopportunities.

The percentage of students who report inthe Tell Them From Me survey that theyfeel they have someone at school whoconsistently provides encouragement andcan turn to for advice. ( Advocacy atschool) will increase from 6.3% to 7.0%

A learning and wellbeing leadershipstructure will be created using RAM fundingto allow a Head TeacherTransition/Learning and Wellbeing Stage 4position that will complement the HeadTeacher Learning and Support/Stage 5 andthe Head Teacher Welfare/Stage 6 role

A Positive Behaviour for Learning team willbe created that will drive the developmentand implementation of PBL across stage 4in 2018.

Students

New opportunities will be created forstudents across the school to participate inleadership opportunities and to designsystems that reflect our commitment todiversity and the views and contributions  ofstudents.

The school will utilise RAM funding toemploy a Head Teacher Transition/Stage 4Learning and Wellbeing on higher duties tolead Year 6 to 7 Transition and Learningand Wellbeing programs that supportsstudent engagement, personalised learningand facilitation of advocacy for studentsacross the school.

The school will use RAM funding to supportthe creation of a Positive Behaviour forLearning team and the provision of TeacherProfessional Learning funds to enhance theskills of individual members of the team forthe development of PBL in Stage 4.

The school will evaluate existing studentleadership opportunities and student voiceparticipation to enhance the collaborativeparticipation of students in school decisionmaking and structures within the schooland local community.

The school will build studentleadership opportunities at all stages oflearning and facilitate a collective, inclusiveand supportive environment for all studentsand the wider school community.

Strategic Direction 3: Supporting Successful Transitions

Purpose

Fairvale High School recognises that themovement of students from a range ofeducational settings to high school, andtheir inevitable movement into tertiary studyor work creates challenges. For attendance of new enrolments and year7 students to improve by 5% over baselinedata.

NAPLAN results for EAL/D Developingstudents compared to rest of cohort toimprove for Reading from 42.5 to47.5% and for Writing from 35.7 to 40.7%.  

To increase the proportion of studentsentering tertiary study or work by 5% eachyear as measured by the post schooldestination survey data. 

Lesson engagement to improve by 5%each year as measured by the 2016 TTFMSurvey.

The school will utilise RAM funding toemploy a Head Teacher Transition onhigher duties to lead a transitions programthat builds relationships, gathers academicand welfare data from primary schools andretains gifted students.

The Head Teacher Transition will alsomanage the movement of new enrolmentsand shared enrolments with SSPs bytracking attendance, collecting data andcoordinating learning programs betweenthe schools. 

The school will utilise RAM funding toprovide a period allowance to a RefugeeCoordinator, a Transition Adviser and anInternational Students Coordinator tosupport new enrolments in successfullytransitioning to FVHS and to support allstudent towards an authentic post schoolpathway.

The school will transition to a newfuture–focused teaching facility in 2020which will include a common staff study.The school will focus our efforts over thenext 3 years to prepare the schoolsadministration, teaching staff, and studentsfor this transition. With authenticcollaborative practice and future–focusedteaching and learning.

The school will develop support programsfor new enrolments, including year 7students, through to final stages of highschool to improve learning outcomes andtransitions through school and beyond. Theschool will base programs on data collectedthrough the student's educational journeyat FVHS. 

The school will facilitate a smooth transitioninto the new building by equipping staff forFuture Focused Teaching and Learningwith the aim of improving teaching practiceand student engagement.
