TO OUR

AudienceIn our 2018-19 season, called the Ventana Series, we give you a window to world-class repertoire created by both our own dance faculty and guest artists.

This year’s season is perhaps our most ambitious yet. Each of our three main concerts off ers pieces by world renowned choreographers. Premium Blend will bring you the works of George Balanchine and Martha Graham; with Dances from the Heart you’ll see a stunning ballet by Nacho Duato; and in Spring Collection, we off er you the energy of contemporary choreographer Larry Keigwin.

The UA Dance Ensemble is propelled as well by the brilliant work of the faculty, who train the dancers and create on them original work that is also in circulation internationally.

So this is your invitation to enjoy great dance in our state-of-the-art Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. As a subscriber, you have fi rst pick and guaranteed seating, which is important because most UA Dance performances sell out! The ensemble you will see has performed in 14 countries across Europe, Asia and South America. Invitations to perform in important venues in this country include the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the Joyce Theater in New York City.

But Stevie Eller Dance Theatre is our home, and we hope you will join us here in Tucson for our 2018-19 run. The Ventana Series is about to open!

In Premium Blend, UA Dance will perform the work of two masters, Martha Graham and George Balanchine. The curtain will rise fi rst on Concerto Barocco, which dance critics over the years have called “spiritual perfection,” and “among the greatest of ballets.” Today, almost 80 years after its creation, this Balanchine gem continues to astonish with its architectural clarity. At the concert’s close, UA Dance will off er Graham’s 1935 Panorama about which the Los Angeles Times has said: “Geometric juxtapositions, simple actions heightened through forceful repetition, visual and percussive rhythms: What a declaration of creative independence this microcosm of society... represented, with Graham’s scarlet costumes enhancing her genius for forceful modernist spectacle.”

Faculty choreography will be on display as well, as UA Dance presents a new work by Christopher Compton. Finally, former professor David Berkey’s male quartet, Sentinel, explores camaraderie through a changing of the guards ritual and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next. Sentinel is in the repertoires of numerous ballet companies, including Ballet du Nord, Roubaiz, France, and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Concerto Barocco is made possible through the generous support of the Fikkan and Sherwood Artist in Residence Fund

and the Ballet Masterworks Fund.

UA Dance is proud to be part of the UA Presents Dance Series for 2018-19, and to be presenting these beautiful, historic pieces of choreography.

Dances From the HeartFebruary 13 – 17, 2019SINGLE TICKET PRICES: Adult $35 / Senior/Military $30 / UA Employee $30 / Student $15

The heart, and the arts, so often speak in one voice. And the message, almost always, is universally understood. Thus we have, Dances from the Heart.

The centerpiece of this concert will be a work by guest, Nacho Duato, referred to in Paris recently as “One of the most beautiful choreographers of our time...” Since its world premiere in 1990, Na Floresta has been performed exclusively by professional ballet companies in Spain, France, Russia and Canada and in the United States by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. UA Dance is honored to be in the company of those who have performed this rare gem.

One of his best early works, Na Floresta made Nacho Duato world famous. In this one-act ballet, he penetrates the savage mystery of the Amazonian Selva. By analogy, the bustling variety of nature represents the ocean of human feelings. Its metaphysical currents again and again give rise to a new and unrestrained tide of life...

A stunning addition to Na Floresta is Jessica Lang’s Among the Stars. This piece, which premiered in 2010 to a magical score by composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, has only been performed by Jessica Lang Dance and by the San Francisco Ballet. In a recent review Philip Gardner writes, “In this ecstatic duet, the dancers share fleeting moments of intimacy while ever-aware that the sea of stars will soon separate them again.”

Dances from the Heart will address much that inspires passion. Our history, our homeland, our habitat, and our humanity will be on full display, including of course some traditional ideas about heartfelt emotions. New faculty member Autumn Eckman, for example, is creating a piece inspired by the words of Edna St. Vincent Millay: “I know I am but summer to your heart, and not the full four seasons of the year.”

Dances from the Heart. Come see and be moved.

Na Floresta and Among the Stars are made possible through the generous support of The James H. and Frances R. Allen Family Foundation, Sandy & Elliott Heiman, the Fikkan and Sherwood Artist in Residence Fund and the Ballet Masterworks Fund.

Spring CollectionApril 19 – 28, 2019SINGLE TICKET PRICES: Adult $35 / Senior, Military $30 / UA Employee $30 / Student $15

A ballet for 10, hip hop for 20, romantic duets, a dance for all women—this is the bouquet brought to you through the choreography of Dyke-Compton, Eckman, George-Fesch, Johnson, Williams and others. From contemporary to neoclassical, Spring Collection is the season’s “wrap up party,” and as always we offer you something special.

This year’s Spring Collection brings you Megalopolis, by Larry Keigwin, a native New Yorker and choreographer who has danced his way from the Metropolitan Opera to downtown clubs to Broadway and back. So... just the right pick for UA Dance! With commissions by such companies as the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the Martha Graham Dance Company, Keigwin is known for an electrifying brand of dance. Megalopolis is no exception, described by the New York Times as “....a divinely well structured encounter between formalism and club culture.”

Megalopolis is a rousing piece that is sure to please, and provides a perfect last peek as we close out the Ventana Series and our 2018-19 season.

This one-act performance brings together works inspired by swing-era Billy Strayhorn to present-day Pink, and jazz dance styles in between.

The Man Behind Duke, choreographed by Sam Watson, features the music of Billy Strayhorn who was the composer, lyricist, and arranger for big band leader Duke Ellington. Watson’s piece takes you back to The Shag, The Swingout and standard East Coast and West Coast Swing.

Also on the program is a piece by Autumn Eckman called Sardine, originally choreographed in 2015. It was recently performed by UA Dance at the Black Box International Theatre and Dance Festival in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The piece investigates human interaction and synchronicity.

Back by popular demand is Michael Williams’ piece STYX about the Greek mythological river between Earth and the Underworld. An intense score by the Israeli band, Infected Mushroom, provides a powerful and entrancing musical backdrop. Finally, Pink’s 2017 release of her album Beautiful Trauma is the inspiration for Michael Williams’ work for three couples entitled Sticks & Stones.
