A Message from the Artistic Director

They wake us up in the morning and encourage us as we begin our day. They take us back to moments in our past and remind us of good times and shared experiences. They cause a tear to well up in our eye as we recall people dear to us who are no longer near. They fill us with energy and enthusiasm as we forge ahead with the tasks of the day or week or year. They beckon us to stop and listen, even just for a moment, and enliven our senses and sense of self and of others.

They are the songs that we share, and the songs that we keep to ourselves. They are the melodies by which we can express what cannot be said in words, and the words that we are unable to utter absent the tune. They are the songs we love to sing. We have an entire season of songs that we are looking forward to sharing with you. You probably know some of them. Some of them will be new. Some will be in a format that makes them seem familiar even if they are not. The songs come from different places and different eras, were written for different purposes and are in different languages. And yet we love them all the same.

We also have several special guests with which we are joining, from Hank, Pattie, and The Current at the start of the season, to our old friends, The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle at the conclusion. In the middle, on February 2nd, we’re going to have an entire evening dedicated to understanding one of Bach’s most well-known cantatas, and that evening surrounded by Holiday Pops and Messiah on one side and music from the Great American Songbook on the other. Perhaps most significantly, we invite you to join us on February 25 for our second annual Cary Big Sing. On this evening, you, our audience members, will be our special guests, joining in with 100 of your closest friends (we're all friends in CSC) to croon a tune or two that you probably already know, even though you might not realize it. The music is already there, just waiting for an opportunity to come and remind you. So we hope you’ll accept our invitation and join us, that evening or at any of our concerts. The music will be waiting, and we’ll be happy to see you. -Nathan

Board of Directors Statement

Welcome! We are grateful to you for sharing our 28th season with us! We are very fortunate to have the leadership and vision of Artistic Director Dr. Nathan Leaf, who champions our musical and organizational growth. And, perhaps most of all, we are excited to explore new sounds, experience new collaborations and make new friends along the way.

About the Concert Singers of CaryThe Concert Singers of Cary was incorporated in October 1991 as an initiative taken at the recommendation of a citizens advisory committee empaneled to expand cultural arts programs in Cary. The first performance took place that same month for the dedication of what is now The Herb Young Community Center. The planning committee included Mable Howell, Barbara Brown, Fuller Blunt, Sarah Sheffield and founding Artistic Director Lawrence Speakman. The goal was to provide an auditioned, year-round performing organization to serve Cary and provide opportunities for local singers. One of the greatest successes of The Concert Singers of Cary has been its ability to achieve its goal to be an active, dedicated and vibrant community organization. As a resident organization at the Cary Arts Center, they are known for their frequent collaborations with local cultural organizations and performance artists, such as the Cary Eid Festival, Diamante, MLK Dreamfest Celebration, Cary Visual Art, The Triangle Wind Ensemble, Mallarme Chamber Players, Ed Stephenson and the Paco Band, The Moonlighters Orchestra, and The Cary Town Band. Throughout its history, The Concert Singers of Cary has teamed with The North Carolina Symphony, The North Carolina Opera Company and The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle in area venues including Meymandi Hall, Carolina Theatre, Koka Booth Amphitheatre and Memorial Hall. On more than 15 occasions, performances by The Concert Singers of Cary have been listed as a “Classical Best Bet” by The News and Observer.

Sincerely, The Concert Singers of Cary - Board of Directors

The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass

Saturday, Oct 27 - 7:30 PMCary Arts Center Theater

Two of North Carolina’s veteran bluegrass musicians join forces with some of the Triangle area’s most versatile musicians to create modern, American, acoustic music featuring the full range of their talents as composers and arrangers. The band is on tour regionally and nationally in 2017 in support of their new album, Hold Your Head Up High on Robust Records. The band makes use of traditional bluegrass instrumentation in a nontraditional way to present original music to the listener that goes beyond the limits of the idiom. The arrangements take on a new level of maturation that follows in the footsteps of Bela Fleck, Mark O'Connor, Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, and Tony Rice. Hank, Pattie & The Current want to pick up where seminal crossover groups like The Punch Brothers, Strength In Numbers and the ever changing Bluegrass Allstars call home. The music is vocal and instrumental, allowing the band to experiment with arrange-ments and tailor the compositions to become vehicles for exploration. Hank Smith plays banjo, Pattie Hopkins Kinlaw plays fiddle and sings. The band is rounded out with Ben Parker on guitar on vocals, Robert Thornhill on mandolin and vocals and E. Scott Warren on bass.

The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass

Program Note from the Composer, Carol Barnett

The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass – To bring the solemnity of the classical choir-based mass together with the down home sparkle of bluegrass—now there’s an assignment. My highest hope is that listeners coming from one tradition— classical or bluegrass—and perhaps dubious about the other, might discover something new and wonderful in the combination, as I have. Composing the music for The World Beloved has given me the chance to write cheery sacred music— all too rare in a medium rife with staid and even lugubrious settings. And it’s brought me back to memories of music heard while visiting my grandparents, country music with a church flavor that told stories and came out of a scratchy old record player. Grandma would not have allowed dancing, but under the table I tapped my toes.

Program Note from the Librettist, Marisha Chamberlain

If you Google the term Bluegrass Mass, you’ll get Web sites for several churches across the country who add Bluegrass music to enliven their worship services. Great Bluegrass music is infectious and lively, so it’s easy to see why any church would want to add Bluegrass, but why call it a Bluegrass Mass unless there’s liturgy, too—a text in the Bluegrass tradition? Bluegrass is more than a sound. The lyrics of so many Bluegrass songs display an unpretentious, earthy philosophy that is easy to sing and easy to understand: Adam lives just up the street and Eve’s the girl next door. Love is the major theme—frustrated yearning love, secret, satisfied love or boldly proclaimed love. And although romantic love between two people is huge in Bluegrass, so is love of God, the Gospel tradition. In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us, says John in the Gospel, which launches our Bluegrass Mass as an earthy, immediate story of love between Creator and creation.

The North Carolina Baroque Orchestra (NCBO) was formed for the purpose of providing opportunities for musicians and vocalists interested in exploring baroque performance practice in a baroque chamber orchestra setting. The orchestra allows musicians in North Carolina and the surrounding area an opportunity to work with highly experienced experts in the field.

Frances Blaker and the artistic director, Barbara Blaker Krumdieck, strive to create exciting performance opportunities for the members of the orchestra. In addition, the NCBO provides audiences who may be new to baroque music, an opportunity to hear this music performed on period instruments in a vigorous and exciting way, in an intimate and casual setting.

The NCBO maintains a goal of refined, stylistic and fun performances, engaging both the players and the audience members in the stories and historical context behind the music. This un-intimidating atmosphere enriches our community as a whole by providing life-long learning opportunities through experiencing historically-informed Baroque music.

Elizabeth Terry Joyner - Soprano, has performed as a soloist and ensemble member for audiences throughout the United States, as well as in Germany, France, Portugal, and Brazil. She studied music in Leipzig, Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship, and holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Duke University. In 2012, Elizabeth appeared as soprano soloist under John Rutter in a Duke Chapel performance of Rutter’s Magnificat. In addition to work as a professional church musician, she specializes in communications efforts for nonprofit organizations and currently works for the Foundation of Hope for Research and Treatment of Mental Illness in Raleigh.

The Mallarmé Chamber Players are a flexible ensemble of professional musicians based in Durham, North Carolina, whose mission is to enrich the lives of the community through outstanding chamber music performance. The ensemble distinguishes itself in the community by its innovative educational programs, its commitment to creative collaboration with other organizations, its creation of significant new work and its dedication to serve a diverse population.

Created in 1984 by musicians Jane Hawkins and Anna Ludwig Wilson working with poet and arts administrator Margaret DeMott, the ensemble’s name comes from Stéphane Mallarmé, the 19th-century French poet and philosopher who believed that true art is created through a unity of music, dance, literature and the visual arts. In keeping with their namesake, Mallarmé performances are often interdisciplinary and have been

praised by critics and audiences as innovative, eclectic and of the highest artistic quality.

With the most gifted artists from North Carolina Mallarmé Chamber Players perform programs that include rarely heard works from the traditional chamber music repertoire that celebrate the diversity in our community by featuring the music of African American, Asian, Latino and women composers. Mallarmé has commissioned over 25 new works by American composers. They have created new contours in the landscape of chamber music through partnerships with artists of many different disciplines. Through their eclectic education programs they have developed a new model for community-based arts organizations.

For Mallarmé’s 25th anniversary season in 2008-09, Suzanne Rousso, violist and former orchestra administrator, took the helm as the new artistic director of the ensemble.

The Great American Songbook is the loosely defined collection of the most important and influential American popular songs, show tunes, and jazz standards from the first half of the twentieth century. There is not, in fact, an actual book or physical collection that authoritatively defines

this music. Rather than a binding, the songs are held together by the ethos of an era that many refer to as “The Golden Age of Song,” in which great melodies and sophisticated yet subtle harmonies were combined with witty lyrics and clever rhymes. Many of the writers of

these songs are still household names today: George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein,

Hoagy Carmichael, the list goes on. And for as many of the names that are easily remembered, there are just as many that wrote great songs whose names aren’t at the tip of the tongue.

Many of our greatest entertainers have risen to prominence on the wings of this music. Louis

Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole are but a few of the names that come to mind. Although the music never went out of style, these American Standards experienced a popular resurgence that started in the 1970s, and found new life through remakes and covers by a wide variety of artists. Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Harry Connick, Jr., Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Gloria Estefan, Barry Manilow, Queen Latifah, Joni Mitchell, Sting, Tom Waits, Pat Benatar, Norah Jones, and countless others have been interpreters of this treasure trove that has helped to define America’s musical heritage. The quality and craftsmanship of the songs is demonstrated not only by their popularity, but also because they maintain their allure with performers of all types and styles. Above all, these works are songs for the singer. They are the songs we love to sing.
