Jazz Houston’s Vision

is to present high-quality programming that demonstrates the richness and variety of Jazz from all of its eras, and to provide focused, enriching education programs while cultivating and growing the greater Houston jazz audience. Jazz Houston seeks to build and manage a vibrant organization that explores the wide array of styles within jazz and celebrates the history of jazz, while preserving and promoting the music for the greater Houston community. At the center of our vision is the creation of a swinging, world-class resident jazz orchestra, which will be made up of and attract musicians of the highest caliber to perform in Houston. Our resident orchestra will present jazz concerts and education programs for the community, annually.

The Jazz Houston Orchestra is led by Jazz Houston’s Artistic Director, Vincent Gardner and made up of fifteen of the finest instrumentalists in the world. Mr. Gardner has spent the last seventeen years as a performer, teacher, composer, music director and touring the world with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Gardner has been able to convert that experience into assembling a swinging powerful Jazz Orchestra that is Houston’s own. Jazz Houston is one of the only four Jazz Institutions in the United States, the only one in the state of Texas and only the second in the country that features a Jazz Orchestra as its performing ensemble. The majority of the orchestra is made up of Houstonians, however the opportunity to perform with the group has led to a few members traveling from outside of the Houston area to take part. Its members include acclaimed professional musicians, and professors from leading University Music Departments such as The University of Houston, University of North Texas and others. The orchestra will perform regularly on Jazz Houston’s Concert Season and its repertoire will include commissioned works from all the eras of Jazz Music by acclaimed composers-arrangers as well as original compositions from the orchestra members.
